Synopsis
Raúl lives alone and works at a hardware store. Unhappy
with the way his life has turned out, he waits for
something or someone to come along and change it. One
day, he notices a Chinese girl outside the store. She sits
there for hours and Raúl’s curiosity is finally aroused. It
turns out the girl doesn’t speak a word of Spanish ―hence
the title―, but as they get to know each other, Raúl learns
that Lian has entered Colombia illegally in the hope of
eventually making it to the United States. The love affair
they embark on will prompt Raúl to stop procrastinating
and take control of his own life.
Susana Baca, is an Afro-Peruvian singer and a prominent figure in the
revival of Afro-Peruvian music in Peru.

“Mothers, 15cents a minute,” Director Marina Seresesky
Sept. 12 @ Harn Museum of Art
Actress and director of theater and cinema, Marina Seresesky has recently been
awarded for her latest script The cortége with the First prize of “Festival Internacional de Cine Independiente de Elche”, with the Second prize of “Primavera Cinematográfica de lorca”, Best International Short Film of “V Festival de las Ideas de Chile” and Best Short Film, Best Direction, Best Acting, Best Music and Best Edition of
International Film Festival “Creando”. With her previous work, “L'Ultima opportunità” she was awarded the Special Prize Short Film Project Competition of the XXI edition
of the Film Week at Medina del Campo. She has also received the Award for Best
short film shot in Castilla y León Astorga Festival, Best Screenplay and Best Short Film
Festival of Ciudad Real and has won numerous national teams at prestigious festivals.
Amongst her film credits are her starring role alongside Javier Albala in the film "Entre
Abril y Julio" by the director Aitor Gaizka, "Secretos compartidos" by Alberto Lecchi,
"Blanca" John Paul Lacroze.
Trained with argentine directors Juan José Jussid and Alberto Lecchi and frequent collaborator of the producer
Louis Sartor, now she combines the performance in Teatro Meridional, with the preproduction of the documentary
"MOTHERS, 0.15 A MINUTE" and preparing the script of her next feature film.

Monica Rojas, Ph.D. (Lima, Peru) is a Peruvian national
dance champion in Marinera Limeña. Rojas has conducted
extensive research on the cultural traditions of the African
descent population in Peru as a participant artist and
activist since 1985. Rojas is a doctor in cultural
anthropology. Her focus areas include ethnomusicology,
performance, the African Diaspora, Latin America and the
Spanish Caribbean. She has contributed as choreographer,
cultural consultant, dance and music instructor, guest artist
and scholar in the U.S. to the University of Oregon Dance
Department, Oregon State University Music department,
University of Washington Ethnomusicology Division,
Fremont Arts Council, Seattle Theatre Group, Langston
Hughes Performing Arts Center, and diverse youth and
adult educational programs. Rojas is currently the founder and director of DE CAJóN Project an arts organization
dedicated to helping bridge local and global efforts that promote and educate about the cultural contribution of
the African descent population in Peru. Rojas was the featured at the 2013 "Women Who Rock" Conference both
as a performer and in the Film Festival with the short film titled "Monica Rojas" by Rebecca Simms.

Elisabet Liminyana Vico received her M.A on Didactics of University Teaching
(2005), as well as her MA research related to PhD in Interdisciplinary Humanity
Sciences (2005), with a specialty in Contemporary Literature, both from the
Foundation of University of Girona. She holds two BAs of Philology, Catalan and
Spanish (both 2004, University of Girona). After being a lecturer in “Didactics of Catalan Language and Literature for children” in the University where she graduated, she started and developed the Studies of Catalan in Instituto
Cervantes of Leeds (2005-2008) and at the University of Leeds (2006-2009).
Meanwhile she combined the teaching of Catalan with Spanish in Instituto
Cervantes of Leeds and Algiers (summer 2008) and the Metropolitan University
of Leeds (2008-2009). She is currently a graduate student at the University of
Florida. Her field of research is Women’s Literature Journalism at the beginning
of the XX Century will focus on social construction of Modernity, Gender and
Identity, and influences of Colonialism and Post-colonialism.

Sean Macdonald joined the University of Florida faculty as Assistant Professor of Chinese Language and Literature.
He received his Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from the Universite de Montreal in 2002. His publications on
modernist and avant garde cultural production, the 1920s-30s Shanghai New Sensationalists, and star discourse in
China have appeared in Modern Chinese Literature and Culture, Modernism/Modernity, and Stars of the Chinese
Cinema. He is an expert on modern and contemporary Chinese literature and culture. He joins UF from McGill
University, where he held appointment in Chinese Studies.

Tiffany Ireland
Education Assistant at Florida Museum Natural History
Education: Tiffany earned her B.A. from the University of Florida in Family, Youth
and Community Sciences with a specialization in Animal Sciences.
Experience: Tiffany first volunteered at the Florida Museum as a docent and
became an employee in 2004. She previously volunteered with the University of
Florida’s Veterinary Hospital’s Wildlife Center and the Treasure Coast Wildlife Rehabilitation Center.
FLMNH Projects: Temporary exhibit openings and programming, Trashformations, Collectors Day, ButterflyFest,
University of Florida’s Creative B program, camps, birthday parties.
Maya Stanfield-Mazzi
Oct. 5, Gallery Talk @ Harn Museum of Art
UF School of Art and Art History Assistant Professor Dr. Maya Stanfield-Mazzi
specializes in art of the Pre-Columbian and colonial Andes, especially that of colonial
Peru. She has published articles in Current Anthropology, Hispanic Research Journal,
Colonial Latin American Review, and Religion and the Arts. She also created
annotated bibliographies on painting in the Viceroyalty of Peru and Andean textiles
for Oxford Bibliographies Online. Her first book, Object and Apparition: Envisioning
the Christian Divine in the Colonial Andes, is currently in press. She is now
researching liturgical textiles from colonial and post-independence Peru, with an eye
to how these works reformulated Andean textile traditions and functioned in a new
global context.
Dr. Stanfield-Mazzi attended Smith College for her B.A. and received her M.A. and
Ph.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles. Her fellowships include a
National Resource Fellowship to study Quechua and a Fulbright-Hays Dissertation
Research Abroad Fellowship for study in Peru. She was a visiting professor at Tulane University before coming to
the University of Florida.
With Susan Cooksey, Dr. Stanfield-Mazzi co-curated recent exhibitions at the Harn Museum of Art including
“Verdant Earth and Teeming Seas: The Natural World in Ancient American Art.”
Kerry Oliver-Smith, Curator of Contemporary Art
Oct. 5, Gallery Talk @ Harn Museum of Art
Kerry Oliver-Smith is the curator of contemporary art at the Harn Museum of Art
at the Harn Museum of Art. She oversees an international collection of more
than 1,500 works in all media from 1945 to the present. The collection is
featured in changing exhibitions in the 7,500-square-foot exhibition space of the
Mary Ann Harn Cofrin Pavilion and the adjacent Robert and Nancy Magoon
Garden. Oliver-Smith’s research interests focus on the juncture of art and politics with an emphasis on photographic and video practice.
Oliver-Smith has organized 28 exhibitions along with the museum’s RISK Cinema
series. Select exhibitions include Paradigms and the Unexpected: Modern and
Contemporary Art from the Shey Collection (2008); Allan Sekula: TITANIC’s Wake (2004 – 2005); German Legacies: The Photography of Max Becher and Andrea
Robbins, Sergio Vega (2002): Modernismo Tropical (2002); and Insistent Memory:
The Architecture of Time in Video Installation (2000). She has published
numerous exhibition catalogues, including, “Contemporary Cuban Art from the Farber Collection,” “Paradigms to the Unexpected: Modern and Contemporary Art from the Shey Collection” and “The Swamp: On the Edge of Eden.” Other publications include numerous essays on exhibitions and artists as well as recent contributions to catalogues about American and international collections of the Harn Museum. She is
currently working on Project Europa: Imagining the (Im)Possible, supported by a major grant from the Andy
Warhol Foundation.
Oliver-Smith also has received several research grants from the University of Florida and has served on numerous
panels and committees, including the National Endowment for the Arts and Art Museum Curators Association.
Prior to her current appointment, she served as the Harn Museum curator of education. A founder and artistic codirector of Florida’s Hippodrome State Theatre, she has worked extensively in film and theatre, including projects
in the United States, England, Scotland and Spain. Oliver-Smith is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and holds a master’s degree in film and media studies from the University of Florida, where she is currently pursuing her doctorate.
