CONVENIENT PRESCHOOL AND CHILD
CARE DOWNTOWN?
Mt. Washington Preschool and Child Care Centers, Inc. (MWPCCC) is an independent nonprofit organization that operates
preschool and child care centers for children ages 6 weeks to 5
years old. Their approach includes a developmentally appropriate curriculum; caring and nurturing staff; and a commitment
to children’s social well-being, in an environment that respects
and celebrates diversity.
Two of the centers run by MWPCCC are located downtown
and are eligible for the subsidy provided by LADWP. Joy Picus
Child Development Center (CCL # 198015239 & 198015240)
is in City Hall South, at 111 E. 1st St., and is open M-F from
6:30 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. For a tour or more information, call 213978-0026. Children are welcome at both centers from two to
five days a week. Harry Pregerson Child Development Center (CCL # 198008722 & 198008723) is in the Roybal Federal
Building, at 255 E. Temple St., and is open M-F from 6:45 a.m.
- 6:00 p.m. The Harry Pregerson Center was recently accredited
by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC); call 213-894-1556 with questions.

MWPCCC’s philosophy is to address the needs of the whole
child by nurturing physical, social, emotional and cognitive
growth while fostering a sense of competence and self-worth.
Caring teachers and staff provide children with opportunities
to explore and experiment through Creative Curriculum that
focuses on hands-on, developmentally appropriate activities.
Children are allowed to discover things at their own rates and
build self confidence by playing in the various classroom environments such as manipulatives (i.e., blocks), dress-up, imaginative play (i.e., kitchen toys), and reading areas.
Both centers welcome all downtown families, and LADWP will
help subsidize tuition for employees. There are spots available
now!

FAMILY MEETINGS:
MAINTAINING STRONG FAMILY
RELATIONSHIPS

A family meeting is a structured discussion time that involves
all family members if the children are school aged or older.
In families where there are younger children (infants and
toddlers), it is a good idea to schedule the meeting after the
younger children are in bed. Your initial meetings should be
kept short to about 15 minutes. As family members get better
at communicating, the time can be lengthened.
At the first family meeting, there should be a discussion of the
ground rules. Some good ground rules to establish are not interrupting someone who is speaking, not putting people down,
no fighting or arguing and allowing each person to share their
opinions without criticisms. It is also important to decide what
should happen if someone breaks the rules and misbehaves
during a meeting.
Family meetings are used to discuss and deal with a variety
of issues including family problems, family activities, chores
and discussion of good things that have happened. Parents
should be careful not to dominate the conversation and allow
every family member the chance to express his or her views. The
meetings should preferably take place where there are few distractions. One good place to hold these meetings is around the
kitchen or dining room table after the dishes have been cleared.
It is not a good idea to hold these meetings during mealtimes.
It is very important to hold these meetings at a consistent time
and ensure that everyone sticks to the schedule. No one will
take the meetings seriously if they are frequently cancelled. Every effort should be made to start the meeting on time. Meetings should be held, even if there appears to be no critical issues
to discuss. In instances where critical issues are absent, families
can focus on and talk about positive things taking place.
Meetings will run more smoothly if each meeting has an agenda. A good way of developing an agenda is to have an “agenda

list” where each person has the opportunity to include his/her
item on the list. Families should include positive things that
have happened in the past week, as well as, items that need to be
resolved. This list of items can be used to guide the discussions
that take place at the family meeting. Families should start the
meeting by talking about the positive things that each family
member experienced.
The primary purpose of family meetings is to teach problem
solving skills to children. For each issue, the family should start
by trying to define exactly what the problem is and then try to
generate a list of possible solutions. The family should not try to
evaluate potential solutions until the list is complete. When the
list of solutions is complete, families should go through the list
and evaluate the positive and negative aspects of each solution.
Ultimately, the family should attempt to reach a consensus on
the best solution for all involved.

in Los Angeles County Since 1992
With sincere gratitude and appreciation for your support and donations since 1992. Please
extend our sincere appreciation to your Board and benefactors for their kindness and
generosity to provide funding to KNMF. Since 1991, 91,987 homeless, formerly homeless,
and needy persons have received assistance from KNMF because of your support.
From 1991 through 2009, quarterly KNMF Veterans Resource Fairs “Stand Downs and
Job, College, University, Trade School, and Homeless Service Provider Fairs” have
contributed tremendously to held reduce homelessness of veterans in Los Angeles County
from 54% in 1991 to 15% by the end of 2009. Your support has helped KNMF to provide
services and materials to thousands of veterans in the Greater Los Angeles Area since 1992.
You have continued to be a major part in our mission to serve and to respond to the needs of
homeless and needy veterans in Los Angeles. The Kenny Nickelson Memorial Foundation for
Homeless Veterans and Children has been able to successfully address the needs of
Los Angeles County and San Luis Obispo County homeless and formerly homeless veterans,
and needy children in After School Literacy Programs.
Thank you for your support in 2009. In 2009, KNMF served 4,370 homeless and needy
formerly homeless veterans, and needy children through Veterans Resource Fairs” Stand
Downs and Job, College, Trade School , and Homeless Service Provider Fairs” and programs
serving After School Literacy Programs for LAs neediest children, including 2009 Back to
School Shopping Spree , distributions of education materials, toys, etc.
Thanks to your support, KNMF has been a lifeline for LAs needy and will continue to serve
the needy for years to come. May God bless and always walk beside all of you!

CHARRED CHICKEN
CAESAR SAMMIES
Juice of 1 large lemon
1 large clove garlic, grated or finely chopped
1 tablespoon anchovy paste
1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon pepper
2/3 cup extra virgin olive oil (EVOO)
2 large hearts romaine lettuce, halved lengthwise
with stem intact
1/3 cup grated Pecorino Romano cheese
(a generous handful)
1 large loaf ciabatta bread, split
1 rotisserie chicken, bones discarded and meat sliced
PREPARATION
Pre-heat a grill or grill pan. In a small bowl, whisk together
the lemon juice, garlic, anchovy paste, mustard, Worcestershire sauce and pepper. Whisk in the EVOO until thickened. Brush the romaine hearts with some of the dressing.
Mix the cheese into the remaining dressing.
Grill the bread and the lettuce, turning occasionally, for
5 minutes. Trim the ends off the lettuce. Pile the chicken
and lettuce on the bread bottom, top with the dressing and
cover with the bread top. Cut into four large sammies.

LAWP EMPLOYEES’
LAMB CHOPS WITH ROASTED
VEGETABLES AND SPRING PEA RISOTTO
4 cups chicken broth (32 ounces)
5 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil (EVOO), divided
1 small onion, chopped
3 cloves garlic, finely chopped
1 1/2 cups arborio rice
1/2 cup dry white wine
1/2 pound green beans, cut into 1-inch lengths
1 pint grape tomatoes
4 scallions, coarsely chopped
1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
Salt and pepper
8 lamb rib chops
1 pound frozen green peas, defrosted
1/3 cup fresh mint leaves (a generous handful)
1/3 cup flat leaf parsley (a generous handful)
2/3 cup grated Parmigiano Reggiano cheese (a couple of
generous handfuls)
2 tablespoons butter
PREPARATION
Pre-heat the oven to 400°F.
In a medium size saucepan, warm the chicken broth over
low heat. In another medium saucepan, heat 2 tablespoons
EVOO, two turns of the pan, over medium heat. Add the onion and garlic and cook for 2 minutes. Add the rice and cook,
stirring, for 1 minute. Stir in the wine and cook for 1 minute.
Stir in the warm broth, one ladleful at a time, allowing the
liquid to evaporate before adding more. Cook for 13 minutes
more.
On a baking sheet, toss the green beans, tomatoes and scallions with the balsamic vinegar and 2 tablespoons EVOO;
season with salt and pepper. Roast for 15 minutes.
In a large skillet, heat the remaining 1 tablespoon EVOO, one
turn of the pan, over medium heat. Season the lamb chops
with salt and pepper, add to the skillet and cook for 3 minutes
on each side for rare.
Using a food processor, puree half of the peas with the mint
and parsley; season with salt and pepper. Stir the mixture into
the risotto, then stir in the remaining whole peas, the Parmigiano Reggiano cheese and butter.
Serve the lamb chops with the risotto and roasted vegetables.
