World Premiere - National Folk Theatre of ireland
IMIGÉIN – A journey home...
National Folk Theatre
Thurs 5th - Sat 21st (excl Sun 8th & 15th) • 8.30pm
This is a dramatic and powerful new production by the National Folk Theatre of Ireland
about one woman’s journey to find a place she can call home. It’s a story of leave-takings
and new beginnings, of love and loss and adventure, and above all, a story full of hope.
Set against the backdrop of emigration, or ‘the Irish habit of going away’, Imigéin delves
deep into the Irish experience of that search for home – the struggles and the triumphs, the
set-backs and the successes. Rich in music, song and dance, this story will resonate with
audiences, inspire you, make you laugh and move you. Don’t miss the chance to see this ground-breaking production in Kerry’s own, Siamsa Tíre
this autumn.

Max Bialystock teams up with timid

Bialystock, the producer, and Gene
Wilder as Leo Bloom, the accountant.

and creativity of others to take the next steps.

Lizzy Bennet, Mrs Norris, Miss Bates and nine other beautifully
observed women in critical moments from Austen’s major novels
(including Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility and Emma).

Adults €16/12; School Groups €11
Presented by Icarus Theatre Collective and King’s
Theatre, Southsea. A tempestuous journey from
scandal and intrigue to lust and vengeance.
Othello is a legend in his own lifetime: noble,
brave, victorious. Honest Iago fuels his venom
with malignance and hateful contempt. Othello’s
world will be brought vividly to life as a live
string quartet and stunning ensemble cast
combine with some of literature’s most vibrant
language and characters. A dangerous tale
of ambition, jealousy and love will unfurl as
Shakespeare’s classic tale of deception hurtles to
its dramatic and poignant conclusion.

life, leaving the priesthood, falling in
love, being overwhelmed by depression
and ultimately how he found a way out
of the dark by accepting the fragility of
love and the importance of now. He tells
his remarkable story with great wit and
has enthralled and entertained audiences

Geppetto uses the objects of a carpenter’s workshop to tell
the tale of the puppet that wants to be a real boy, and the
puppet-maker who wants to be a real father.
Puppetry, shadows, illusion and especially composed music
combine to create a show with something for all ages.
Pinocchio is carved on stage, brushes become a fox and
the shadow of two saws transforms into a giant shark. An
element of improvisation makes each performance unique to
its audience.

THE LEGEND OF LUKE KELLY, DUBLINER

Performed by Chris Kavanagh
Wed 30th & Thurs 31st Oct
8pm • Drama • €19/16

They grew up together, dreamed together and
emigrated together from the Cork town of Brandon
in the late eighties. America didn’t quite fulfil their
dreams and they returned home, chastened but
wiser. Things happened between them out foreign,
things of the heart and things of the purse, things
that were never resolved. And now they gather to
welcome home one of their own, Jack Flynn, who
has flown solo across the Atlantic. It should be a
celebration...
Having performed an 11-date tour of Germany in 2011 with folk
legends, The Dubliners, and having shared the stage with them
celebrating their 50th anniversary DVD recording at Dublin’s Vicar St,
Chris Kavanagh brings his acclaimed “Legend of Luke Kelly Dubliner”
show to Siamsa Tíre.
Lead singer, Chris Kavanagh, bears a remarkable resemblance to
Luke, while his singing talent captures the depth and passion of the
great man. He is joined onstage by the accomplished musicians that
make up The Patriots, all of whom consider it an honour to bring
Luke’s memory back to the live stage.
But the ordinary can be extraordinary - Can Greg
and Mags rekindle their childhood love, can Brendy
and Josie stop their marriage from splitting apart
as he prepares to take to the seas on a voyage of
his own...will Jamesie find the truth about his son
Jimmy – lost on the streets of Brooklyn...
The past is a powder keg waiting to explode... the
only question is who will strike the first match.

Yellow Man, Grey Man
Thurs 7th Nov • 7.30pm • Film • €10

Director, Writer & Producer:
Maurice Galway
This film is an exposition and
examination of artist Pauline
Bewick’s iconic paintings and
drawings, for which she is
justly famed. Irish art lovers are
familiar with the optimistic Yellow
Man figure, however the Grey Man
drawings, a much more sombre
collection, are seen here for the first
time. The synchronisation uniting the
work of one of Ireland’s most-loved
artists and Galway’s directorial eye, is
tied up neatly through the camera-work
of Eugene O’Connor famed for his artistry
in filming Katy Perry, Rihanna, Prince,
Pat Matheny and the Beatles. Nico Brown
who has worked with Mike Leigh and Alan
Parker, teams up with Martin Brundsen
to create the original music.

Leonard Cohen explores the human condition in all
its facets. Jewish mysticism, wry political commentary,
tender eroticism - all meet in the potent lyricism of his
songs, from ‘Suzanne’ to ‘Hallelujah’ to ‘First we take
Manhattan’. Túr na nAmhrán features exquisite Irish
language versions of Cohen’s songs, translated by poets
Liam Ó Muirthile and Gabriel Rosenstock. They will be
performed by Liam Ó Maonlaí, David Blake, and Hilary
Bow, with support from the Brad Pitt Light Orchestra.
Margaret Lonergan has created stunning screen
projections of the lyrics.
Iniúchann Leonard Cohen gach aon ghné de nádúr an
duine. Tagann tréithe agus tionchair éagsúla le chéile sna
hamhráin aige - an misteachas Giúdach, an tráchtaireacht
shearbh ar chúrsaí polaitíochta, an t-earótachas séimh faightear sin agus tuilleadh in amhráin ar nós ‘Suzanne’,
‘Hallelujah’ agus ‘First we take Manhattan’, cuir i gcás. Tá
Gaeilge mhaisiúil mhíorúilteach curtha ar liricí Cohen ag
na filí Liam Ó Muirthile agus Gabriel Rosenstock. Is iad

(Winner of the Eamon Keane Playwriting Award 2013, Listowel Writers’ Week)
Siamsa Tíre has teamed up with Listowel Writers’ Week as part of the Eamon
Keane Full Length Play Award 2013. As part of the award, the winning
playwright’s work is produced as a staged reading in Siamsa Tíre. This year, the
award (adjudicated by Billy Roche) was given to Fergal O’Byrne from Wexford.
His play, A Dragon’s Tale tells the story of a Wexford man who has emigrated
but whose memories of home – particularly of Vinegar Hill – remain vivid.
30
A beautiful new wintery tale about a boy who is
unable to find delight in what is around him and
instead seeks adventure, excitement and the thrill
of the unknown! Inspired by the famous Aesop
fable this wonderful play has a gifted ensemble of
actor musicians who play the delightful characters,
funny sheep and perhaps a scary wolf or two……
Winter is coming, the trees are bare, the birds fly
south, and the sheep are flocking, seeking shelter
from the wind.
As the falling snow flurries to the ground, wolf
footprints can be seen padded into the hard
ground…….
But standing on the hill top a boy is watching his
sheep.
A boy who, unthinkingly, unknowingly………….
Cried WOLF!

- SPARKLING SEASONAL SONGS
WITH VIRGINIA KERR
This new Irish comedy – set in rural
Ireland over two days in 1964 – has
been heralded as one of the funniest
plays in decades and continues to
attract huge media attention and
record-breaking audiences.
Tues 10th Dec • 8pm • Opera/ Classical • €20/17
A wonderful celebration of seasonal songs with
internationally acclaimed soprano Virginia Kerr
and members of Opera Theatre Company’s
talented Young Artists’ Programme. Expect to hear
carols, arias and ensembles – from the warmth of
White Christmas to the awe inspiring O Holy Night
or the intoxicating cheer of the Champagne Trio
(Die Fledermaus).
The story centres on one Madge Molloy,
a woman in her mid-60’s, who has lived
over forty years of her life wondering
why her husband Tom, (whom she
was married to for just five months),
disappeared without trace. She has
been left to rear her only daughter
Maura on their small farm and she has
become bitter about men in general!
32
However, the arrival of a new curate
to the parish – namely Fr. Michael
McCoy - is about to throw light on
the circumstances surrounding Tom’s
mysterious disappearance. Will Madge
Molloy have her revenge or is love
about to conquer!
One of Ireland’s finest sopranos, Virginia is
equally at home on the operatic stage or concert
and oratorio platform. She has performed with
many of the world’s leading opera houses
including the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden,
Scottish Opera and Glyndebourne Festival Opera.

of Ireland and across the world as one of the finest
singers of his generation. Accepted as a truly unique
talent. Appealing to all ages, musical tastes and
cultures, he has moved international audiences with
his distinctive brand of satin smooth vocal magic and
continues to touch people to this day.
However, the fact remains that Red Hurley is his own man,
delivering song after song – each more haunting than the
next. Be it a cover version or his own original material, Red
Hurley makes each one his own.
Ballet Ireland
CARMEN
Fri 13th Dec • 8pm • Ballet • €23/18
Set to Bizet’s passionate score, ‘Carmen’ follows the
story of a young, naïve soldier Jose, who is bewitched
by the beautiful and fiery gypsy, Carmen. Obsessed and
reckless, Jose turns his back on respectable life to be
with her. But Carmen, like love, is a bird that cannot
be tamed and Jose’s desire to possess her eventually
destroys them both.
Passion, drama and colour in abundance! Ballet Ireland’s
talented dancers will sizzle in this fantastic new ballet.
Bizet’s music is pure dance. Don’t miss this fabulous
new production for 2013.
After 40 years honing his craft, Red is now at the forefront
of popular music across the globe. The mere mention of a
Red Hurley concert has ‘sold out’ signs being displayed at
venues from Dublin to New York very quickly.
34
Red returning to Ireland for another series of concerts with
his band and very special guests, “The St. John’s Choir”.

With equal measures of pluck and positivity, little orphan ANNIE charms
everyone’s hearts, despite a next-to-nothing start in 1930s New York
City. She is determined to find her parents, who abandoned her years
ago on the doorstep of a New York City orphanage run by the cruel,
embittered Miss Hannigan.
36
With the help of the other girls in the Orphanage, ANNIE escapes to the
wondrous and magical world of NYC. She finds a new home and family
in billionaire Oliver Warbucks, and a lovable mutt named Sandy. A
wonderful Christmas story to soften even the hardest of hearts.

Over a decade in development and featuring visual effects
that hold their own even today, this Disney leprechaun
classic remains endearing and engaging largely on the
basis of its charming performances. Sharpe had caught
Walt Disney’s eye over a decade earlier as the original
lead in the Broadway hit Finian’s Rainbow, while the
young Connery would soon find international fame with a
considerably more sophisticated persona. 1959 USA Robert
Stevenson, 86 mins
Nominated for seven Academy Awards, Double Indemnity, is one
of Billy Wilder’s greatest career achievements. Phyllis Dietrichson
(Barbara Stanwyck), the scheming and perfidious wife of a
wealthy oilman, persuades gullible and lustful insurance
salesman Walter Neff, (Fred MacMurray) to set up an accident
policy for her husband and then murder him so that they can
collect $100,000 on its double indemnity clause. A 1940’s noir
masterpiece not to be missed! 1944, 107 mins, Billy Wilder, USA
BRINGING UP BABY
Wed 4th Dec • Film • 2pm
€8/5 • €2 (Active Retired)
One of the defining “screwball” comedies of the 30s sees
madcap heiress Hepburn doing her best to derail the staid life of
dusty palaeontologist Grant. The catalyst for this change comes
in the shape of Baby, Hepburn’s pet leopard that causes chaos
wherever he goes. As Grant’s career, sanity and sexual identity
collapses, he finds himself drawn to Hepburn’s irresponsible,
life-affirming coda. Fast and furious dialogue fuels the comic
mayhem. 1938, 102 mins, Howard Hawks, USA

ON LEAVING - DAVID MONAHAN
10th September – 19th October
For over three years, David Monahan has been capturing a moment just before Ireland's
young and talented become voluntary exiles. These images are shot at night at a location
of the sitter’s choosing. Each background has a particular significance for the subject
and the idea is to make a heroic shot which celebrates the person.
Of his work, David notes; “I fully recognise the difference between this and previous
waves of emigration and at the same time I acknowledge that the quest remains the
same - the search for a better life... The work honours the courage behind the decision
and the fact that moving to a different country can dramatically shape the future lives of
those who leave, and has huge impact on those left behind.
The opening of the exhibition co-incides with the launch of a new production by the
National Folk Theatre of Ireland, Imigéin and is part of The Gathering celebrations.
Jason Dunne
Emerging Artist
26th October to 7th December
Preoccupied with the body as a site of both
new possibilities and limitations, Jason Dunne's
recent work takes material from daily events
concerning the body as the basis for creating
sculptures that resemble the human form but
diverge from its usual logic. In a new installation
at Siamsa Tíre, amalgamated creatures which are
built using diverse materials seem to devise new
uses for the gallery space through their unusual
and symbolic gestures.

Tralee art group
14th December to 4th January 2014
The members of Tralee Art Group are delighted to be exhibiting once again in Siamsa
Tíre this December/January.

to encourage new artists of all ages. The theme of the exhibition is the heritage and
folk tradition of Kerry. The group is working in collaboration with Niall Naessens, an
established and well known artist and printmaker, who will curate the group’s work in
paint and print medium for this exhibition.
