It was great to see so many parents at our first Under 8’s day. Students had a lot of fun with a wide range of activities and we thank Ms Sheraton and the early years teachers for their organisation. Thanks to our P&C for our first disco at Deebing Heights State School. Thank you to our staff and volunteers for helping make the event a success. The Dress as a Pirate Day and National Theatre for Children performance was also a lot of fun for our students and a great fundraiser for childhood cancer. We thank Stockland for their support. Thanks to staff, students and community for all working together to make our official school opening a success. It was great to have the Honourable Kate Jones, Minister for Education officially open the school. Mayor Paul Pisasale made a very valuable donation from Ipswich City Council on behalf of himself and Councillor David Pahlke as well as presenting a plaque and certificate. I thank our staff, students and community for all rallying together to present our school so positively to so many official guests. Every day counts at school The Department of Education and Training has developed a range of free resources to promote the importance of going to school, every day. Research shows that school attendance leads to positive student outcomes, and can help children to build social and emotional skills. The new Every day counts resources, developed with the input of Solid Pathways (www.indigenous.education.qld.gov.au/school/Pages/solid-pathways.aspx) students, includes an animation, comic book, posters, as well as tips to help encourage students go to school every day. Check out the new resources and see if you can spot some of your favourite NRL footy players — visit the Every day counts website (www.everydaycounts.eq.edu.au). Andrew McDonald Principal On Monday afternoon, The National Theatre for Children, commissioned by Stockland, visited our school with The Treasure Trove of Conservation Cove science enrichment incursion. Established in 1978, the National Theatre for Children brings high quality, live professional theatre programs to schools to empower and educate students and communities on a wide range of curriculum based topics. The program is designed for grades P-6 and focused on: • What are natural resources • How we use resources • How we waste resources • What YOU can do! All students thoroughly enjoyed the performance and we thank Stockland for providing this educational opportunity for our students. Class Dance Performance and Art Gallery As part of our Performing Arts Program, all classes have currently been actively completing their dance unit of work. To celebrate this success, each class will perform a dance they have been preparing throughout the term. The classes have been working enthusiastically and are looking forward to performing for an audience. The performances will take place on Thursday 18 August at 2.15pm in the undercover area near the tuckshop. Please be encouraged to attend this performance in support of our wonderful dancers. Students will bring home a note advising what they need to bring for their performance. All students must wear their uniform to school and bring dance appropriate clothes to change into. Prep to Year 4 students have also been participating in Visual Arts lessons and have completed many amazing and colourful artworks. Following the dance performances, students are invited to show parents through our Art Gallery in Q block.
