Competition Info
Guidelines and Procedures to Follow at
Dance Competitions
BEFORE GETTING TO THE COMPETITION
1.
Check & Double Check that you have each and every
part of your costume. Don’t forget to check for shoes,
tights hairpieces, and other small accessories.
2.
Make sure that your name is on every piece of your
costume, including shoes!
3.
3.
If medals or pins have been awarded, wait until you
are off the stage to distribute them to your
teammates. Handing them out on stage causes a
commotion.
4.
Please be gracious and a good sport. You dance
differently everyday and different judges are looking
for different things in a dance. Whether you place
first or last, you should be proud that you have
worked hard and shared your love of dance with the
audience.
Stock up on the little things that no dancer should be
without - bobby pins, safety pins, hairspray, sewing
kit etc.
AT THE COMPETITION
1.
Be in the change room completely dressed and
ready to go (makeup, hair etc. all done) 1 hour
earlier than your scheduled dance time. We need
time to warm-up, run through the dance, and get
focused
2.
Be kind while backstage. Dancers from the other
studios love to hear “great job!” or “good luck!”
DanceForce. wants to have a reputation as a studio
of being polite and pleasant dancers.
THE COMPETITIVE DANCER LOOK
1.
Practice proper audience etiquette. When in the
audience clap or cheer for everybody. All performers
deserve your applause. Please avoid yelling and
cheering excessively loud. Respect fellow dancers by
remaining quietly seated throughout their
performance. There is always a short pause in
between numbers in which you can enter and exit
the auditorium - Parents, this goes for you too!!
Hair needs to be well polished and extremely tidy. If
pulled back it must be completely slicked using
hairspray or spray gel. Pesky ‘wispies’ can be glued
into place with super strong gel.
2.
Absolutely zero tolerance for nail polish or jewelry.
If you have recently had your ears pierced and can’t
remove earrings please put a nude bandaid over
them. Only clear nail polish or french manicures are
allowed during competition. The only time nail
polish or jewelry are acceptable is if it is required for
your routine.
3.
Makeup should be appropriate for stage. As the
stage lights are so bright you are required to wear
makeup heavier than you would on a daily basis.
Please use foundation to even skin tone, false
3.
AT THE AWARDS CEREMONIES
1.
If you have it, please wear your DanceForce. Jacket
or any studio logo clothing on stage during the
awards - show your studio spirit!!
2.
Sit quietly while waiting for your dance to be
announced. Listen respectfully and applaud while
the other performances are being awarded.
lashes, black eyeliner, neutral to dark brown
shadows, a heavy amount of blush to brighten the

face and intense lipstick colours that pop. We use 4
different lipsticks. Please make sure to ask your
teacher what one to use for your dance - Russian

EMILY HALLAM - MUSICAL THEATRE
PROVINCIAL REPRESENTATIVE
CHILLIWACK FESTIVAL
Congratulations to Emily Hallam who has
been selected from the Adjudicator at the
Chilliwack Music and Dance Festival as the
Intermediate Provincial Representative
Musical Theatre (Voice) for the
competition. She will be competing for
the provincial title in Fort St. John’s at the
end of May. All of us at DanceForce. wish
Emily the best of luck!!!
FINAL TIPS FOR PARENTS & DANCERS
1.
Remember you are there to dance. Dancers should
be prepared to go on stage and should not be
gallivanting all around with their buddies.
2.
Arrive on time and be prepared as requested. This
keeps all dancers calm and ready to do their best.
3.
Please don’t ask if hair really needs to be that tight or
if you need to wear eyelashes. Generally appearance
is a factor in the judges scoring and we don’t want to
be docked points for something easily preventable
4.
All competitions have rules prohibiting videotaping
and taking photos (other than at the awards
ceremonies). Please follow the rules, as you will be
removed from the theatre and possibly even result in
disqualification for our dancers.
5.
Remember it doesn’t matter whether you place first
or last. What matters is that you went out and
performed to your best and that you had fun and
your parents and teachers were happy with your
performance and effort.
