Dive into the world of Cuban ballet, where prima ballerina Alicia Alonso still inspires students and stars at the National Ballet of Cuba. This intimate documentary profiles Norma Canner, a pioneer in dance movement therapy, who found in dance a way to help and heal those discarded by society. Tickets: $5.00 at www.brattlefilm.org WEDNESDAY, JUNE 8 SPEAKER: SPOTLIGHT ON CLIMATE CHANGE 6:00-7:30 pm Jose Mateo Ballet Theatre, 400 Harvard Street, Cambridge Dr. Cameron Wake, Research Professor of Climatology and Glaciology at the University of New Hampshire, will present on current environmental and climate change research and speak about the importance of the non-scientific community rallying around these issues. FREE THURSDAY, JUNE 9 WORKSHOP: ARTISTS AS ADVOCATES 6:00-7:30 pm Jose Mateo Ballet Theatre, 400 Harvard Street, Cambridge From speaking out on the importance of the arts and artists to using your artistic voice to advocate for other social issues – attendees will get the tools here! FREE SATURDAY, JUNE 11 PERFORMANCE & ADVOCACY FESTIVAL 12:00-6:00 pm In and around Jose Mateo Ballet Theatre, 400 Harvard Street, Cambridge 80+ performances on five stages by New England-based companies in diverse dance forms, including ballet, jazz, tap, African, modern, Polish, Greek, classical Indian, hip hop, Irish step, Chinese, flamenco, samba and more! Some performances include audience participation and live music. Local social service and advocacy groups discussing their work and role in our community will line Advocacy Way to share their work. DANCE DISCOVERY 12:00-6:00 pm 1151 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge Over 30 introductory “sample” classes in a wide variety of dance forms, taught inside Jose Mateo Ballet Theatre’s three classroom studios. Almost every dance form represented in the Festival will be taught! PARKING LOT DANCE PARTY 6:00-8:00 pm Parking Lot at 1151 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge Dance into the evening with your fellow performers, instructors and community members as we celebrate the universal power of dance and bring the Festival to a joyful close!
