JAZZ TRIO
Tom Lawton’s eclectic and
energetic jazz piano style has kept him busy
for more than thirty years as a performing and
recording artist, composer and teacher.
He is known for his facility with both
traditionally rooted jazz forms and free
improvisation. Tom has played from age
seven and studied classical music with Horace
Alwyne, Joseph Barone, Judith Willoughby,
Robert Durso and Edna Golandsky. His jazz
studies were with Gerald Price, Al Stauffer,
and Bernard Peiffer.
Tom has been a member of the Jazz Studies
faculty at Temple University since 1992, at
Bucks County Community College since
1984. He also joined the University of the
Arts faculty in 2005. In addition, Tom has
given jazz clinics and master classes at Rowan
University, the Painted Bride Art Center,
Bloomsburg University, Kimmel Center Jazz
Program and the Clef Club.
Mansfield, PA, native Dan Monaghan
is one of the busiest drummers in the
Philadelphia area. After studying classical
percussion for eight years he went on to
earn a Bachelors of Music in jazz studies
from Temple University. Since then he
has performed with some of the top
names in jazz, including Eric Alexander,
Peter Bernstein, Uri Caine, and Randy
Brecker. In addition, he has recorded with
Dick Oatts, Garry Dial, Joe Magnarelli,
Jimmy Bruno, Elio Villafranca, Joanna
Pascale, John Vanore & Abstract Truth,
Larry McKenna, Jon Lundbom & Big Five
Chord, Norman David, Tom Tallitsch, Mike
Kennedy, and many others.
Dan has performed at the Mellon Jazz
Festival, the East Coast Jazz Festival, the
Wilmington Latino Festival, the Cremona
Jazz Festival, the Blue Note, Blues Alley,
Smoke, Ortlieb’s Jazzhaus, Zanzibar Blue,
and Chris’ Jazz Cafe, among other wellknown venues.
In addition to his performing credits, Dan
is on the faculty at Temple University and
Widener University, and is a frequent
clinician at schools, colleges, and
festivals.
Lee Smith was born and raised in
Philadelphia, PA. He studied trumpet
from 5th grade through his freshman
year at West Chester University. It was
while in high school that he picked up
the electric bass. It seemed to come
naturally. He started doing gigs on the
weekends and eventually recorded
and toured internationally with several
Philadelphia based R&B recording
artist including, The Delphonics, Blue
Magic, and Billy Paul. He later moved
to New York City and worked with
Afro-Cuban Percussionist, Mongo
Santamaria for five years. Lee’s primary
instrument is now the acoustic bass.
Lee has worked with a Who’s Who of
jazz greats including: Dizzy Guilespi,
Lionel Hampton, Sonny Fortune, and
Odean Pope. Lee is currently receiving
international acclaim for his first
recording as a leader entitled, Sittin’ On
A Secret. Lee is a member of the Jazz
Orchestra of Philadelphia (JOP).
He is the proud father of bass great,
Christian McBride.
