HOW WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE A "HOLLANDER" FOR A DAY?
Try some "klompen" on for size...and take a few steps to get a feel for their
unyielding appeal. You haven't lived 'til you've marched the entire parade route
at our Tulip Festival while wearing wooden shoes!
Experience a bit of the past by donning a Dutch hat or an entire costume, which
is often composed of many parts and pieces!
Push a broom while scrubbing streets during our annual Tulip Festival!
Witness the grinding of the wheels in the largest working windmill in the U.S.
Try a favorite "munch of the Dutch", our famous Dutch Letters.
Tip toe through the tulips, but please don't pick one! As a beloved icon of our Dutch
heritage, they are a sight to behold when they are in full bloom.

The afternoon Grandstand show features Dutch dancing and singing,
Parade of Provinces (Dutch costume style show), cheese market

LE VISITING PELLA
GARDEN LOVER'S
FAMILY
Itinerary
Itinerary
Pick up donuts and pastries at Jaarsma Bakery.
Summer-time is a colorful time in Pella! You will have
plenty of opportunities to stroll through flowers to your
heart's content. Check out Pella's beautiful parks anytime
(see listing on page 15) or take in a garden tour that will
knock your socks off!
8:00 am
A great time to come is late June when the bedding plants
are coming into their glory. Some of the most notable city
gardens are:
10:30 am Tour the Historical Village. Don't forget to check
out the Miniature Dutch Village.
Scholte Gardens - elaborate gardens in the Dutch tradition that
display an array of lovely trees and flowers behind the Scholte
House. The gardens boast more than 25,000 tulips and other
flowering plants in the Spring and bed after bed of colorful
annuals in the Summer. The original Scholte Garden covered
several city blocks and was a favorite retreat for the Scholte
family and friends.
12:00 pm Drive through Culver's on the way to Cordova
Tower. Enjoy lunch at the top of the tower
(photo opp!) or in one of the shelter houses.
Pella Historical Village and Vermeer Mill - as you follow the paths
that wind through the Historical Village, you will see numerous
beds of flowers that complement this period setting of Dutch
history. The beds are breathtaking during the growing season
that stretches from early May's tulips and hyacinths to late
October's mums and marigolds.
Sunken Gardens Park - what is more unique than a large pond
shaped like a wooden shoe? If that in itself isn't enough, you
can stroll on the comfortable concrete paths that wind through
the park. Great care is taken in making the gardens that flank
these paths absolutely beautiful with a large variety of colorful
flowers.
Be sure to get plenty of donut holes!
9:00 am
Take the kids to the Fun Factory at the Pella
Recreation Center to burn some energy!
1:30 pm Explore Lake Red Rock by walking the trail out to
the lake. There's a great place to skip rocks if
you walk far enough!
3:30 pm Back into Pella to walk downtown and check
out a few of the shops. Fun gifts for kids can
be found at Work of Our Hands, Hometown Variety
and Silver Lining. Little girls would love to spend
some time at Hartgers Doll Store.
5:30 pm Dinner at George's Pizza (All meals include a free
soft serve ice cream cone on the way out.)
On June 27, 28 and 29, 2014, you will be able to take a
walk-through tour of six local gardens on the Gateway to Hope
Garden Tour. This tour has become a beloved annual event that
is not only delightful, but also serves to fund arts camps for
Nicaraguan children from the very poorest neighborhoods.

This little town is all decked out during the Holidays!
ONE DAY HOLIDAY TRIP
Itinerary
It's just hard to beat the feeling of magic in the air
as you drive into Pella during the Holidays. From the
twinkling, blinking lights in Central Park to the store
fronts that are dressed up in all their holiday finery to
the scent of fresh bakery goodies wafting through
the air–you will be enchanted.
Start your day with a warm cup of coffee or hot
chocolate at one of our great coffee shops. Meander
through the Pella Opera House while taking in the
wondrous Festival of Trees (Nov 21 - Dec 6). For lunch,
take time to sit a spell and enjoy a hot cup of soup and
a one-of-a-kind sandwich at one or our restaurants on
the square.
With your feet rested and your tummies full, stroll
through the delightful downtown shops that are decked
out with all things Christmas. Indulge in holiday
shopping at its best; you will experience a bit of smalltown nostalgia–a refreshing break from the hustle and
bustle of the mall while you find that "just right gift".
After shopping, take some time to stroll through Pella's
Historical Village that will be festively decorated for
the holidays - a truly Dutch Christmas experience,
including complimentary coffee time in the Dutch
Bakery.
Top off your day with dinner at one of our fine-dining
establishments, a perfect end to a perfect day and a
memorable highlight of the season.
WEEKEND HOLIDAY
Itinerary
What does a perfect holiday weekend encompass?
How about spending two or three days in our quaint
Dutch village? It may take you back in time, and that's
a good thing this time of year. Rest assured, you
will feel pampered as you experience a multitude of
seasonal offerings, including an abundance of Dutch
hospitality.
Christmas is a fabulous time to indulge in a few
beloved cultural experiences such as a delightful show
and the Festival of Trees at the Pella Opera House or a
candlelight Christmas concert at Central College.
The first weekend in December holds the 52nd Annual
Christmas Tour of Homes, where you will tour several
lavishly decorated homes and be treated to a traditional
Dutch Coffee Time. This same weekend, you can take
in an old favorite, the heart-warming A Christmas Carol,
performed by Pella's own Union Street Players.
As if that isn't enough, you can spend hours shopping
in Pella's shops. Since Pella has extended holiday
shopping hours, you will have plenty of opportunities to
take your time and savor the experience. Who knows
- maybe you'll catch a glimpse of our favorite Dutch
gentleman, Sinterklaas!
Your weekend might be packed but you will feel a
noticeable calm as you relax and down-shift in our little
town, America's Dutch Treasure.
Let our holiday traditions fill you with joy!

TYPES OF FISH AT LAKE RED ROCK
WALLEYE
Fish along the old river channel where the water depth
drops off and along the face of the dam where sand rock
meets mud and grass. Also fish the river during cold weather
months. Back trolling crank baits can provide fast action.
LARGEMOUTH BASS
Fish the rocks around the Marina point, the face of the dam
among the rocks and off of the old Wallashuck boat ramp.
CRAPPIE
Fish around underwater structures, brushy areas, Roberts
Creek viaduct, near bridge pilings at the upper end of the
lake, and the Whitebreast Creek shallows prior to spawning.
Use jigs and minnows for bait.
WHITE BASS
Fish the Whitebreast Creek shallows during spawning.
In August there is a two-week time period when they are
extremely easy to catch at locations like Marina point,
Whitebreast point and any rocky shoreline. During other times
of the year fish in the tailwater areas below the dam. Use 1/4,
1/8 or 1/16 oz. white and or yellow jigs in tandem for bait.
NORTHERN PIKE
Fish in the Tailwater areas and use large lures with lots of flash
such as spoons or crankbaits and a fast retrieve. Floating jigs
with chubs or large minnows are effective in the spring.
CHANNEL CATFISH
Fish areas just above cut banks, snags, rocks and other
submerged structures on the lake and in the river.
Use cut bait or dead minnows during late winter and
spring and use a prepared stink bait during the summer
months when the lake is stable or rising.
FLATHEAD CATFISH
Fish with small sunfish under cut banks and holes on the
river after dark.crank baits can provide fast action.
