Year 6s ‘The Last Monster in Scotland’
Year 4 Orchestra
Performance
I was privileged to be invited to help
out at the Year 4 Orchestra Concert
and Recital. Year 4 have been
learning an instrument of choice for a year and this concert was so friends
and family could see how amazing they were.
After the Orchestra played their two fun tunes of Fanfare and Marching
through Mud, some more pupils performed their pieces. Straight afterwards
the cello ensemble played a further two pieces. There were Year 4s in this,
alongside two Year 7 and two Millfield Senior School pupils.
It was a brilliant concert. I hope it shows the Year 4s how good they could
become, because half of the Senior pupils who played had also started at the
Prep School. I learnt the clarinet as a result of the Year 4 Orchestra and still
love playing it. Being part of the Music Department is so much fun – I hope
they all continue to play and enjoy music.

Millfield Minibus
Spaces available for this
autumn and new return routes
The school minibus service currently has
spaces available across each of its eight
routes for the Autumn Term.
Daily morning runs depart from Bath/Frome, Castle Cary, Farrington Gurney,
Highbridge, Langport, Wedmore, Wells and Yeovil. See routes here
From this September we are trialling the introduction of return runs on three
of these routes – Bath/Frome, Farrington Gurney and Wedmore. If the
return service proves popular we hope to roll out this service to other routes
in due course.
Please note that our minibuses only have capacity for 12 passengers so
please register your interest as soon as possible to avoid your name going on
a waiting list.

Speech Day and Prize Giving Programme
Last Friday was a busy day, both in and out of school for our pupils. Those
not involved in athletics had a super day taking part in a huge range of
activities around a theme of ‘Water environments and water
management’ for our biennial Eco Day. See lots of photos by clicking the icon.

Phoebe’s Charity Abseil
Children in Years 3 and 4 enjoyed a morning on the Mendips building dens and
looking for bears (several children were sure they had seen claw marks in tree
trunks!), before visiting the Bristol Festival of Nature on the Harbourside. Those
who went inside the Explorer Dome all said it was amazing!
Year 5 had a lovely day in the sunshine with our friendly warden Roger Lucken at
RSPB Greylake in the morning, learning more about wildlife on the Somerset
Levels and looking at how the recent flooding had affected local bird populations,
before enjoying some ecology fieldwork in the sunshine at Priddy Ponds after
lunch.
Year 7 had a super time at WWT Slimbridge by all accounts, although sadly Friday
13th was unlucky for some, with bad traffic making their day a bit longer than they
had planned. Many thanks to the Science Deptartment for organising this
excellent day out.
The remaining children in the Pre-Prep, Year 6 and Year 8 rotated around a range
of workshops, including:
· Wetland fieldwork on the Levels at WWT Westhay Moor, with Avalon
Marshes Education Officer Amy Stone and several volunteers

· Coastal ecology, with marine environmental scientist Blaise Bullimore.

Education consultant from Earthworks.
· Collaborative river artwork with local artist Peter Margerum

It was a good day all-round, and all our guests said how much they had enjoyed
working with our children. I would like to say a particularly big thank you to my
Year 8 helpers who worked so well with all the Pre-Prep children. They set a super
example and gave up their time, which was really appreciated by the children.
They know who they are!
Mr Seal will be taking over the running of the Green Team next term – all the best

challenge to abseil 100ft from Yeovil
District Hospital’s roof this Sunday 22
June!
Phoebe has already raised £210 and her
aim is to raise as much as possible for
Yeovil’s Flying Colours Appeal. If you

Year 7 Camp Final Arrangements
Year 6 trod the boards for two nights last week, to rave
reviews! See the video and photos by clicking the icons above.
Camping Groups
They played out the story of hapless reporter, Katie Allbright, who is
dispatched to Drumnadrochit to cover the story of the recent sighting of
the legendary Nessie. She meets all manner of interesting characters
during her stay, including the famous legend-busting scientist Cecil
Franklin Pyke. Will the sceptical Dr Pyke ruin Drumnadrochit’s local
legend and its community’s livelihoods, or can Katie prove once and for
all that Nessie does exist?
The staff and support crew acted and sang beautifully and many
memorable characters came to life on stage. Well done to all of you!

produce this play: Mrs Lacy – Director, Mrs Sturges – Musical Director
and Mrs Driscoll – Costumes.

Camping Routine
The routine for all groups is as follows:
Arrive 7.45am on the morning in your school kukri kit. Meet in the field at the
bottom car park behind the riding stables. First task of the day is to cook
breakfast.
Split into three groups for caving, walking and cycling – all off site activities.
Return to camp at 5.00pm: Cook dinner / games / camp fire / sleep
7.00am – wake-up and showers (day pupils shower in Sports Hall changing rooms
and boarders back to House). Put on school uniform. Breakfast in the dining room
ready for a normal school day.
What to Bring/Wear
During the day wear Kukri kit and bring a small rucksack, bottle of water, sun
cream and a cap/hat.
Do not forget to pack: sleeping bag, torch, warm coat (school vander is ideal),
pyjamas, wash bag, towel, change of underwear, old trainers for caving and your
school uniform for the next day!
No tuck, iPods, iPads, phones or other electrical gadgets are allowed on camp.

Year 7 Haiku Poems
俳句
Haiku are short poems originally developed by Japanese
poets. The form was adapted to English and other
languages by poets in other countries. Haiku are often inspired by an element of
nature, a moment of beauty or a poignant experience using sensory language to
capture a feeling or image. Sometimes they are humorous.

Year 5 Eco Day Acrostics
Learn Music with a Friend
We will be piloting our ‘Learn with a Friend’ scheme to
encourage new beginners to learn in pairs from the
Autumn term this year, 2014.
This will be available for all instruments and voice. It is
a great way to get your child started on an instrument
or with vocal coaching as, of course, new ventures are
so much more fun with a friend.
Musically it allows children to play duets together,
which instantly sounds more gratifying than playing
alone and the shared experience encourages
progress.

Stockel. All the children were very
enthusiastic about the instrument's

thoroughly enjoyed plucking the odd
string, trying out a glissando on the
school harp!

CRICKET
Dunstan Foil, Sunday 15 June
The U11 eight-a-side cricket team once again retained the County Cup by
defeating King’s Hall in the final. Some superb batting from all of the team was
matched by the efforts in the field. Some fielding that the pros would be proud
of limited the opponents to a very achievable total.
Our fencers achieved some more good results at the weekend, winning
three of the six Foil competitions.

The U11A team played their final
fixture of the season against Blundell’s
on Staurday. The team batted first and
Henry S opened the batting in the 20overs match. Henry immediately went
to work, with boundaries in the first
over. He proceeded to play some free
hitting shots around the ground and
went on to reach his hundred in 65
balls. Congratulations to Henry on his
second hundred this season for school.

Seven salty seadogs ventured into uncharted waters last week, to sail on the
sea in Plymouth Sound! In a friendly regatta with Plymouth College and Truro
School, our children had a bit of a shaky start, but sailed more confidently as
the races progressed. We sailed 4 races in total and had a wonderful time
sailing in busy tidal waters for the first time and learning some tips from more
experienced sailors. After the racing, we all had a civilised match tea in the
Royal Western Yacht Club and enjoyed recounting tales of Oska’s debate with
a 10,000 ton ship about who had right-of-way! All good, clean fun – well done

SWIMMING
South West Regional Championships
14/15 June
Silver 100m Backstroke in a personal best by 7
seconds and set a school record.
The swimmers were in action again at the
weekend competing in the second round of the
South West Championships that was held at
Hengrove Leisure Centre. This event is highly
ranked in the swimming year and only contains
the best club swimmers in the South West of
England for each age and stroke. During this
competition extra National Qualifying times
were gained. Well done to the following
swimmers:
Silver 400m IM in a personal best by 8 seconds
and set a school record.
10 /11 Years
Wyatt W – was the only 10 year old boy again to
make the breaststroke finals and in the 100m
Breaststroke swam a personal best time by 8
seconds.
Aurelio C – Aurelio swam a huge personal best
by 13 seconds on the 200M backstroke and just
missed out on the medals coming 4th. Aurelio
also made the final on the 200m Freestyle
coming 6th.
5th 200m Freestyle in a personal best by 2
seconds and set a school record.
Polly won the overall points for the top 11 year
old girl in the South West.
Polly now holds an amazing 14 school records –
which in itself is a record!
12 Years
Alice G – Alice swam with great determination
at the weekend with personal bests on the
200m Backstroke and 100m Backstroke
improving her National Qualifying Times and
collected two bronze medals. Alice came 6th in
the overall points.
Jami S – Jami looked strong and powerful on the
100m Breaststroke, winning silver and
swimming a personal best time by 5 seconds.
Susan R – Susan had another outstanding
weekend with a personal best by 15 seconds on
the 400m Freestyle and just missed her National
Time by 0.11. Susan also swam well on the
backstroke events with a 4th place on the 200m
Backstroke and 100m Backstroke. Susan came
3rd in the overall points.
Alex S – Alex dominated the 11 year age group:
13 Years
Gold 200m Backstroke
Harriet L – Hazza had a great weekend with a
personal best on the 200m Backstroke making
the final to swim a strong 100m backstroke. She
came 5th in a personal best and just missed her
National Time by 0.5 seconds.
Gold 100m Backstroke, which was in a personal
best and a school record
Gold 200m Freestyle in a personal best by 3
seconds
Gold 400m Freestyle in a personal best by 3
seconds.
Alex won the overall points for the top 11 year
old boy in the South West.
Alex now holds 10 school records.
Polly P – Polly was outstanding at the weekend:
Gold in the 200m Backstroke, in a school record
and achieved her first National Qualifying Time.
Silver 400m Freestyle in a personal best by 9
seconds and set a new school record.
Santos V – Santos had another good weekend
with personal best times in all his swims and
swam a brilliant 200m backstroke which was
also a National Qualifying Time.
Santos came 8th in the overall points.

BIATHLE
European Championships are being held in
Portugal and the World Championships are being
held in Guatemala. It is fantastic to have so many
of our pupils gaining international experience at
such a young age; such experience is invaluable.
World Biathle Tour
Over the weekend of 7/8 June both Charlotte T
and Niall C (pictured below) competed for Great
Britain at the second stage of this year’s World
Biathle Tour - Tirrenia, Italy. Both competed very
well in their age group categories with Niall placing
5th (Youth C boys – 12-14yrs), and Charlotte
finishing 2nd in the Youth E girls category. “It was
a really fun event and the finish line was right next
to an ice cream shop!” said Charlotte. Huge
congratulations to both!
GB Biathle Series Race 3, Cheltenham
Last weekend (15 June) two Millfield Prep pupils
competed at the GB Biathle Series in Cheltenham.
This race was the 3rd in the Series out of 6, with
races taking place across the country. Once the
Series is completed, individuals are scored on their
best three performances to win a cash prize.
A number of Millfield Prep pupils have qualified
for the European and World Biathle
Championships over the summer holidays. The
Alex P came 1st in his age group, while
Ruby S finished 7th in her group. With Alex
finishing 2nd in the GB Series Race 1 at Millfield
Senior School, and Ruby finishing 4th at the same
event, both have put themselves in contention for
podium places overall. Alex is looking strong to
win the overall competition in his age group. Well
done to both!
National Schools Biathle, Leweston
School
The National Schools Biathle Championships takes
place this weekend at Leweston School. Millfield
Prep has 16 pupils competing across all of the age
groups, and we wish them all the best.

The Millfield Prep golfers
are having a busy and
successful week. On
Tuesday we had the
Millfield Prep Open at
Kingweston Golf Club.
Freddie T continued his
great season with a fine
victory in the U10s, with
Barney F chasing Freddie
home to finish in second
place.
U12
Jack H secured an excellent
third place finish in the
U11s with Sky P finishing
top of he Millfield pupils in
the U12 age group.

also played a match vs
Sidcot Senior School on
Wednesday. They played a
9-hole matchplay on the
Channel course at
Burnham and Berrow Golf
Club. All three played
excellently with William
winning 3/2, Freddie
surviving a late fight back
from his opponent to win
on the final hole 2 up, and
Barney securing a well
earned half point on the
final hole. A comfortable
victory for Millfield Prep.
Next up for Freddy Z,
William O, Freddie T,
Barney F and Jack H is the
Frome Junior Open on
Saturday.

Last Sunday, at the Road to Wimbledon County Finals, we had an
all Millfield Prep final with Annabelle D beating Tara E 4-2, 4-0 and
Luke T beating Jamie T 6-1, 6-0. Luke and Annabelle now go onto
the National Finals at the All England Lawn Tennis Club from 11-18
August and get to compete on the grass courts there! Luke H, who
left two years ago, won this event in 2012 and was presented his
trophy by Tim Henman. The Road to Wimbledon Competition
started at school and we had a total of 24 entrants in the boys’
and girls’ events. Matt C, Ollie M and Emily T will compete in the
Regional play-offs on 12/13 July for a place in the National Finals
for players rated 6/5/4 and 3. We wish all the players the very best
and hope they follow in Luke's footsteps!

Year 2 Visit Weymouth Sea-Life Centre
Year 2 had a lovely trip to Weymouth Sea-life Centre last week. They visited thirteen different zones and
stamped their cards after each one. After our picnic lunch we climbed back onto the minibuses to the
other end of the sea-front and went up the tower, where we had a panoramic view of Weymouth and
identified different points of interest. The children finished off by going on to the beach, paddling in the
sea and making sand-castles. There were lots of comments about how well-behaved they all were. A
great day out for everyone!
Reception’s Eco Day

Reception had a
wonderful time pond
dipping with Beth and
Julia from Carymoor.
They found tadpoles,
water beetles and water
boatman. Then they
made a willow fish to
take home.

Year 2s Harvest
On Tuesday, Year 2 harvested the
potatoes they planted in the
Spring. Amazingly we dug up over
16kg which the children weighed
out and took home to share. We
have also picked our own broad
beans which have been cooked
and taken into lunch.

Pond Dipping on the
Somerset Levels
As part of Eco Day, Year 1 had
the opportunity to work with
conservationists in the
marshland on the Levels.
They saw beautiful
dragonflies and found pondskaters, dragonfly larva and
tiny fish when they were
pond-dipping. In
the afternoon
they worked with
staff from
Carymoor
Environmental
Centre to explore
the diversity of
pond life within
our school
garden.
Year 2 Violinists
Year 2 played their violins to their parents in Assembly this morning. They all performed brilliantly. Well done!
Pre-School on
Eco Day
Pre-school had a lovely
time during Eco Day last
Friday. They went pond
dipping and found lots of
tadpoles, water boatmen
and water beetles. They
also did some water art
and worked together to
make a pond picture. This
is now
proudly
displayed
in Preschool.

There wasn't a dry Mini (or parent!) this week as we had water play in the garden!
The children got stuck into all the activities on offer from cleaning the cars at the Minis car wash, bathing the dollies to paddling in the
pool. The sprinkler was a big hit and the children loved running through and over it!
Next week the children are welcome to wear summer party clothes ready for our final Minis of this year; The Teddy Bears’ Picnic.
