THOUGHT TO DISCUSS ON THE WAY HOME
Sunday, November 13 (33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time)
• Jesus promises that amid trials and difficulties He will give
us wisdom in speaking our witness to Him. When have
I been given just the right words to offer needed help to
others??
• During Mass, we ask for “the constant gladness of being
devoted” to God. How does my faith bring me joy?

DISTRACTIONS AND OPPORTUNITIES OF NOVEMBER
There are moments in everyone’s daily life that can be joyful or frightening. Often they are both. Some
events present new opportunities and responsibilities. Some cause concern and are troublesome.
Sometimes you cannot remember the way things used to be. When you are told that you no longer have
a job, when you receive a dire medical diagnosis, or when a person you love dies, your world is turned
upside-down. As much as you would like to, you cannot go back. Your world changes, and you must
continue to live with it.
No matter how you voted (or whether you failed to vote), last week’s local, state and national
elections brought some unexpected changes. All the TV coverage on the elections and even November’s changes in
nature tell us a lot about our daily lives. As in all change – even when the change is joyful-there is often fear. The scripture
readings during the month of November show us how we can deal with the uncertainty that comes with change. Jesus says,
“By your perseverance you will secure your lives.” Jesus is saying we must be willing to persevere. But what is perseverance?
Perseverance is living one day at a time. It is doing the best we can each day. Perseverance is refusing to be overwhelmed by
all the things that we cannot control in our ever-changing world.
Perseverance, understood in this way, may seem foolish to some people. They might ask, “How can you live one day and be
sure that you are going anywhere?” How can one step lead you to where you need to be?” But we Catholics believe that God
is living our lives with us. We believe that when we live one day, when we take one step, God is guiding us in the right direction.
We trust that when we live one day at a time, the day we live leads to future days in which God will bless us. With faith, we have
the freedom to take one step, to live this day, and to leave the rest to God.
The daily distractions that deflect our aim are both large and small. To all of this worldly hoopla and more, Jesus says, don’t
be swayed or deceived. The only thing that deserves our attention and effort is the testimony that’s required of us, day in and
day out. It is a real, daily commitment to the non-negotiables of life. Don’t contradict God’s
non-negotiable command! All human life is sacred. Does our every decision witness to the
love, mercy and forgiveness at the center of this Christian value? If it does, even fulfilling our
responsibility to vote becomes an opportunity for blessing.
COMING THIS WEEK: In keeping with
our “Welcome Back” theme, Father
Wayne Morris, former assistant
pastor at St. Joseph Church in the
early 2000s and now pastor of the
four Noble County Churches of St.
Stephen, Caldwell, Corpus Christi, Belle
Valley, St. Mary, Fulda and St. Michael,
Carlisle, will present the third of our fall Feed Your Faith (FYF)
programs this coming Wednesday evening, November 16.
A dinner of ham, scalloped potatoes, baked beans, rolls and
dessert will be served at the K of C Building, 2101 S. 3rd
St., at 6:00 p.m. with the program immediately following. The
topic is: “Living, Dying or Dead – God’s Mercy is Alive
and Working.” Bring your family and friends and come out
and enjoy a tasty meal and, then, “feed your faith!”
MARRIAGE CELEBRATION: Bishop Monforton
will be here next Saturday, November 19, 5:15
p.m. Mass, St. Lawrence Church, to celebrate
Marriage Anniversaries for couples marking
their 25th, 30th, 35th, 40th, 45th, 50th, 55th, 60th
and 60+ (every year thereafter) anniversaries of
marriage. The names of twelve couples have been
sent to our diocesan office. Did anyone fail to get
registered for this great, annual event? Please let us know.
See you next Saturday in St. Lawrence Church.
HELP: On Saturday, November 19th, after the 5:15 p.m.
Mass there will be a dinner in the St. Joseph undercroft
honoring the anniversary couples for 2016. The CWC
will be hosting the dinner, but we need help from anyone
willing and able. We are asking for monetary donations to
help with the cost of the supplies and food and donations of
desserts, and we need help with set-up, service and cleanup. Please call Dee Moore (304) 654-6735 if you can help
in any way. Monetary donations can be put in an envelope
marked “Anniversary Dinner” and dropped in the collection
basket, or give to any CWC member. Thank you in advance
for your help.
Recently, every registered household received a
brochure outlining the results of our recent two-year
study and the design of a Parish Life Center. An Ironton
Catholic School Building Fund has been set up for the
donations we have received to date. Also, an Ironton
Catholic School Foundation was set up to receive the
stocks and other funds from the Joan Skaggs estate.
Follow the progress of these two accounts weekly in our
Catholic Community bulletin.
