From the Pastor
Dear Parishioners and Visitors to Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish-Shrine,
Unfortunately, our reality is that terrorism is no longer something that we witness on the
evening news in some far off land where governments and societies are unstable. Rather,
terrorism is a fact of life for us here in the United States. However, what you may not realize
is that if you are a baptized, practicing Catholic Christian, you are considered by some in the
U.S. military as a “terrorist extremist”. That’s right, if you are trying to live the teachings of
the Catholic Church, to the best of your ability with God’s grace to aid and guide you, you’re
considered a security risk along with the likes of “Hamas” and the “KKK”.
A presentation given by an enlisted member of the US military responsible for training
troops gave a presentation entitled, Extremism and Extremist Organizations to the 316th
Expeditionary Sustained Command Unit in Pennsylvania. Slide #24 of his power point presentation showed a list of “extremist” groups and listed the Roman Catholic Church in this list.
An enlisted soldier, a Catholic Christian, who was present for the presentation submitted a
written complaint to the Equal Opportunity Division of the Army which handles such grievances, and waited nearly one year to be interviewed about his complaint. During this time,
the presentation was given several times to several enlisted military personnel. At some point,
the Archdiocese for the Military, which is responsible for the pastoral care of enlisted Catholic
Christians, lodged a formal complaint as well. Eventually, the slide was removed from the
presentation however, the public apology requested by the military Chaplain Alliance for
Religious Liberty has never been given. The most that any official from our US military has
ever said was that this inclusion was the opinion of one individual who gave the presentation.
I am the first to admit and even propose that our Church must never be aligned with any
government or economic system. The truths of our faith go beyond and must influence any
and all earthly realities. However, it is very telling that a member of the US military was
permitted to present what he did. It is very telling that had no one spoken up, it would have
been allowed. It is very telling that it took nearly a year for the grievance to be addressed and
then no public apology was ever given by our government to our Church. It is very telling that
this seems to be the future role of our Church in our country. The question is: will we remain
faithful to the truths of our faith at all costs, or will we somehow allow an earthly power to
define us?

News and Notes
Consolation Ministry
In our continued efforts to identify and
respond to the spiritual needs of our
Parish community, we have formed a
Consolation Ministry to provide
comfort, and a pathway to healing, to those who are
grieving and suffering a loss in their lives. Another
6-week session will begin on Tues., May 21st, 7:00 to
8:30 p.m. We meet in the Mary, Queen of the Apostles
room on St. Lawrence School campus. For more
information, please Bill Hughes at 856-435-2025.
MAY CROWNING
TODAY!
The First Communicants will
crown the statue of Mary at
both the 9:30 a.m. Mass &
1 p.m. Spanish Mass.
We would like to invite all men in our parish to
grow in our faith together as iron sharpens iron.
(Proverbs 27:17)
This is what we do: We open our sessions with a
personal prayer, we read the Scriptures, meditate about them, watch an inspirational movie,
discuss it and have a closing prayer from another
member of the group.
We meet the second Wednesday of every month.
So our next meeting is on May 8th at 7:30 p.m. in
the consolation room of St. Lawrence School.
Save the dates:
Wednesday, June 12th
Wednesday, July 10th
For further information please contact Neil
Ortiz:

Stewardship
Title: Stewardship Deeds
“Children, let us love not in word or speech but in
deed and truth.” (1 John 3:18)
How do we love in deed and truth? The answer is
through Stewardship – giving some of our time to
spend with Our Lord in prayer, giving some of our
talents to do ministry in the parish, giving some of
our financial blessings to support the work of the
Church.
