54 years of Service Friday, November 28, 2014 Michael Brown, Ferguson update: NAACP, Race Forward and ACLU statements page 3 Spread love and cheer for the Holiday Season Church receives grant, feeds community North Philadelphia's Greater Enon Missionary Baptist Church had a busy weekend giving and receiving. On Friday, November 21, the church received a grant award from AARP; on Saturday, November 22, the church hosted its 3rd Annual Seniors and Neighbors Pre-Thanksgiving Luncheon; and on Sunday, November 23, the church distributed hordes of fruit to the congregation! The $500 grant award bestowed by AARP was given to Greater Enon to support and advance its weekly food distribution to the North Philadelphia community, one of the highest poverty hit areas in the city. "Our 3rd Annual Seniors and Neighbors Pre-Thanksgiving Luncheon drew over 70 guests from the community. This free community outreach initiative is designed to bring cheer, the Gospel, kind hospitality and nutritious food to our elderly and other neighboring residents," said Rev. Michael Robinson, Senior Pastor. The event was sponsored by a kind donation by City View Pizza, and the traditional turkey meal, vegetable sides and desserts were prepared and catered by Chef Nathaniel Fields. At the conclusion of Sunday's worship service, Choir Director Marsha Camp surprised the congregation in giving everyone varieties of fresh fruit. "People left with a bounty of healthy fruit to take home, truly a blessing. To God be the glory," said Robinson. Greater Enon Missionary Baptist Church is located at 1854 N. 22nd Street, Philadelphia PA. Sunday worship is held at 11am, Wednesday Bible Study is at 7pm-8pm. Pictured holding check, from left: Rev. We've all had our turkey meals, (those of us who even partake in a turkey meal, and the official holiday has come and gone. Truth be told however, Thanksgiving is the signal for a number of popular American holidays that pretty much run, back to back. There's Thanksgiving. Then a few weeks later, its Christmas, Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, News Years' Eve, New Year's Day, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s National Holiday, Valentine's Day -- and President's Day. I am one who doesn't fall for all the glitz and wasteful spending on these special days. I see all these holidays as wonderful opportunities for families and friends to spend time together and enjoy each other. (I also see most of these holidays as a time for some good eating, truth be told). But for now, let me just focus on the holiday that just passed on November 27th, Thanksgiving. If we could all remember to be Thankful year-round, the world, the nation, our state and certainly our city would be a much better place. Sometimes I think it is so very important to list why you are thankful, so here goes my list and it is an equal opportunity list: I am thankful that I see so many wonderful development projects moving forward in our city. I am very thankful the November 4, 2014 General Election is behind us and we'll witness a new Governor being sworn in, in January. Lord knows I'm thankful for the work opportunities I have. I am thankful for good health and for the health of my Mother, Husband, adult children and grandchildren. I am thankful for my home church, Solid Rock Baptist Church at 1863 Federal Street in South Philadelphia. I'm SCOOP U.S.A. o I want the convenience of receiving every week at my home or business o 26 weeks - Only $20.00 o 52 weeks - Only $35.00 Call (215) 232-5974 Fax (215) 236-2945 Mail Scoop U.S.A. I'm thankful for my forever church home, Mount Carmel Baptist Church and the election of their newest Pastor, Rev. Donald Moore, who will officially be installed Sunday, December 14th. I'm thankful for people like Ralph Wynder, of the Registrar of Wills Office and Brenda and Tootie who work there also, for the professional services they always provide to citizens when we go to their City Hall offices. And I'm thankful for the food I get to nourish my body with and the shelter I have over my head. I'm thankful for the trees, the sky, the sun, the rain and the moon and all that God created, for us. Equally I am thankful for the people who have the love in their hearts and the ability in their minds, to care for the most precious in our community -- our babies and our seniors. I thank God for the people who advocate for the poor and homeless. I applaud and am thankful for organizations such as One Day At A Time Drug & Alcohol Recovery program, for all the critical community outreach and recovery work they do. I am thankful for all the good police officers of Philadelphia who try 24/7 to do their jobs to the best of their ability to keep the citizens of this city, safe. Same goes for our Fire Department workers and staff. Without police and firefighters -- where would we be? I am thankful for the school teachers and college professors that are educating our children. I am thankful for the African American History Museum, Freedom Theatre, Bush Fire Theatre, Philadanco and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. I am thankful for our President, Barack Obama and for our First Lady, Michelle Obama and their daughters. I am thankful that despite some sloppy and lack-luster work by a handful in the secret service, that the God I serve has saw fit to keep our President safe. The list of things and people I am thankful for could go on and on, but suffice it to say I am thankful for many days and I never forget to count my Blessings. On another note: The Philadelphia Branch of the NAACP will hold elections for a new Administration on Saturday, December 6, 2014. The election will take place at the Beech Building, 15th and Cecil B. Moore Avenue, 12 noon-3pm. If you are a current member of the Philadelphia Branch of the NAACP, come out and cast your ballot for the candidates of your choice. As for me, I am so glad that my membership is current and I look forward to participating in the NAACP voting process next weekend. I do not know all the people who are running for office, but I know my choice is clear and I will proudly go vote for Minister Rodney Muhammad for President. Some other good people are running for various offices and perhaps some of them could do a good job as the next President of the Philly NAACP. But for me -- Minister Rodney Muhammad is just what I think the organization needs at this time, in the current history of the Philadelphia branch. The local branch is still in turmoil. A lot of the issues and concerns that were brough to light in the last nine months or more are still not resolved, but the NAACP MUST move forward. We need strong, honest leadership and we need it now. I think Minister Rodney Muhammad can be the bridge repairer, if you will -- to put the NAACP back n track. In this season of Thankfulness, I am thankful for the National and the local NAACP and I want to see this civil rights organization continue to grow and thrive. Lord knows we still need our NAACP. Just because thanksgiving is behind us, I think we need to carry the spirit of Thankfulness with us---throughout the year. From the PCOL Vanguard to all God's children need S.H.O.E.S. The Civil Rights Struggle is an awesome feat if it never ends. I contend we are greater than the struggles and battles we are consumed with each and every day. Attending the PCOL Vanguard meeting at Audenried High School has filled me with a new revelation of, "We are a Mighty People blessed abundantly with God's goodness and grace!" I can say this without hesitation because of those in attendance, what was said and with steadfast confidence, they can and will deliver. When you know the Brothers in the room, their life-long commitment to, "We are going to work it out, no matter what!!!", you can rest assured it will happen. So the call to Brothers and Sisters to enlist in another call of "Righteousness" deployment, "Cooperative" collectivism, "Bold and Courageous" affirmation to rebuild our ancestral greatness. We must be encourage and believe that, yes we are battling on many fronts and no matter what it looks like, just know our front and back are covered with the blood, past, present and future. Leaving the meeting fired-up, I went to Mt Airy United Fellowship Church program where always, my Pastor, my Brother, the People's Voice in the Wilderness, the always on-time Rev. Dr. Joe Williams had a special Sister asking, "What do you want on the table for Thanksgiving?" Ms. Terri Lyons touched with the spirit of the Almighty and fortified with the strength and beauty of our people, was asking a question for us to know, the war we are embedded in, we will win. For our tables, we want and will have the magnificence of a "Glorified People" from whence we come from! To close, our struggles may be massive and it may be SCOOP U.S.A. Mailing address: P.O. Sonny Driver: Publisher / Editor continuous, but as stated at Reverend Anthony Sharkey" Stevenson, Sr.’s 25th Anniversary it's real and most demanding. There were voices sharing and praising the good Reverend's name and his works. Believe me, they were all powerful, uplifting and Godfilled but please indulge with me for a moment as I share some thoughts/comments from my good Brother, Kenny Gamble who spoke as his most cherished, oldest and best childhood friend. In summary, he talked about the long gifted walk they did together. He spoke about the influence of their moms, their wives, their family and friends. It has been a journey filled with some of everything but it's still manifesting itself. Brother Gamble truly was inspirational and richly encouraging in all he had to say but he ended with a message my Brothers and Sisters! We are in a cage which is locking out all the beauty and fulfilling magnificence of a chosen people. We cannot allow ourselves to remain captive and being locked away from what is rightfully ours. We must break free from the madness and we better do it now. Therefore I say, "Right Now! Right Now! Right Now! It is our time right now! We better take it, "Right Now!" Rev "Sharkey" Stevenson's "All God's Children Need S.H.O.E.S." is a blueprint towards us getting it right. He's a family man, with a spiritual plan paving away for community enlightenment through God's Love and Salvation! It time for all to get on-board! The Struggle will end and Peace will be Still. She grew up in El Salvador where her father was a lawyer and teacher and her mother was a doctor. Monica’s mother suffered from Guillain-Barré Syndrome, a nervous system disorder which caused her a lot of weakness and pain. The disease often left her bedridden and kept her from playing an active role in the family’s daily routines. Monica was grateful to have her at home and had lots of other support. The school just across the street from her house where she was a star student, the beloved church where she started teaching Sunday school at age 9, and her best friend’s house a block away were the center of Monica’s childhood. As pervasive gang violence began striking closer and closer to home, when Monica was 15 her family decided to leave everything behind to try to start a better life in the United States. Watch Monica's story, in her own words at Monica Chica: 2014 DC Beat The Odds® Scholarship Recipient www.youtube.com/watch?v=0p9t2XD3z8g&feature=yout u.be Almost immediately, the American Dream wasn’t what Michael Brown, Ferguson update NAACP deeply disappointed a Missouri grand jury opted not to indicte officer Darren Wilson BALTIMORE, MD – A St. Louis County grand jury declined to indict officer Darren Wilson, 28, for the shooting and killing of unarmed 18-year-old Michael Brown, Jr. In light of this decision, the NAACP has released the following statement. From Cornell William Brooks, NAACP President and CEO: “The NAACP stands with citizens and communities who are deeply disappointed that the grand jury did not Failure of Justice Race Forward's Official Statement on the Grand Jury Decision On August 9, 2014, a town in Missouri reminded the country and the world of the perils of being young and black. While tweeting and chanting “Black Lives Matter,” we waited and hoped that, this time, justice would be blind. That wait is now over. A grand jury has decided not to indict Darren Wilson in the killing of young Michael Brown, meaning there will be no charges, no further investigation, and no trial by the State of Missouri. Race Forward is deeply disappointed with this outcome. The many questions that arise in the face of this decision can be boiled down to one: “What do we do now?” There are two answers: First, we must continue to organize - in Ferguson and everywhere. The activism demanding police accountability towards communities of color has been nothing short of amazing and it must continue. To many Black people, this shooting had a recurring theme that re-ignited the emotions and indignation of millions. It is the same tragic story that spans from slav- ACLU comment on Ferguson grand jury decision See “Justice” page 12 ST. LOUIS, Mo. — The grand jury in Ferguson, Mo., has declined to indict Ferguson Police Officer Darren Wilson on charges in the Aug. 9 shooting death of Michael Brown. The following is reaction from Jeffrey Mittman, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Missouri: "The grand jury's decision does not negate the fact that Michael Brown's tragic death is part of an alarming national trend of officers using excessive force against people of color, often during routine encounters. Yet in most cases, the officers and police departments are not held accountable. While many officers carry out their jobs with respect for the communities they serve, we must confront the profound disconnect and disrespect that many communities of color experience with their local law enforcement. "The ACLU will continue to fight for racial justice. We must end the prevailing policing paradigm where police departments are more like occupying forces, imposing See “ACLU” page 12 indict Darren Wilson for the tragic death of Michael Brown, Jr. We stand committed to continue our fight against racial profiling, police brutality and the militarization of local authorities. The death of Michael Brown and actions by the Ferguson Police Department is a distressing symptom of the untested and overaggressive policing culture that has become commonplace in communities of color all across the country. We will remain steadfast in our fight to pass the End Racial Profiling federal legislation. And we stand in solidarity with peaceful protesters and uphold that their civil rights not be violated as both demonstrators and authorities observe the “rules of engagement.” The grand jury’s decision does not mean a crime was not committed in Ferguson, Missouri, nor does it mean we are done fighting for Michael Brown, Jr. At this difficult hour, we commend the courage and commitment of Michael Brown's family, as well as local and national coalition partners." Founded in 1909, the NAACP is the nation's oldest and largest nonpartisan civil rights organization. Its members throughout the United States and the world are the premier advocates for civil rights in their communities. Monica, her parents, and her older brother and sister moved in with an aunt and other family members in Montgomery County, Maryland. Monica— who only knew a few words in English—was enrolled in a large high school where even other Hispanic students teased her about her accent. For the first six months she avoided speaking in school at all. Her aunt had worked for years to secure legal residency for Monica’s family. But her father discovered that being a lawyer and a teacher in El Salvador did not translate into a good job here. It took more than a year for him to find a job as a janitor. Her mother’s health took another turn for the worse and there wasn’t enough money for the health care or medicine she needed. Before long her parents decided to separate and her mother and brother returned to El Salvador leaving Monica hopeless: “Everything that I had left was my family and now it was destroyed. In less than one year my life had turned meaningless and worthless for me.” In an unexpected twist a sport Monica had never played before was about to help turn her new world around. Monica is 6’3”, and word traveled to the girls’ basketball coach about the new student in school. “I was in my ESL [English as a Second Language] class, and the coach got close to me, and I was like, ‘Why is a tall woman talking to me? I don’t understand anything of what she’s saying.’ . . . I just told her that I didn’t speak English [and] that I had never played basketball before. And she said, ‘I don’t mind. I’m going to teach you. If you want to, you can try.’” Somehow, Monica agreed. “At the beginning it was hard because I didn’t know what side of the court I was supposed to run—I just knew that I had to throw the ball to the basket. That was it. I didn’t know the rules. I didn’t know why the referee was whistling. I didn’t know anything. But I went to practices. I started playing. I started practicing [on] my own because I really liked it . . . I don’t know how, but I did it, and that gave me more confidence in myself.” Being part of the team also gave her a new set of friends and a lot more practice learning to speak to and understand her teammates, and her growing confidence on the basketball court translated to more confidence in the classroom. As her English improved she was moved out of her ESL classes into regular ones and then from regular classes into honors courses. Today, less than two years after beginning school in Maryland, she has taken Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate courses and has a 4.0 grade point average. She’s also a starter on the varsity basketball team. She was recently honored with one of the Children’s Defense Fund’s Beat the Odds® Awards for how much she has overcome. The Topaz is the stone for the month of November In the 19th century topaz was discovered in Russia. It was so coveted that only the Czar, his family and the persons he gave it to could possess it. Rubbing or gently heating topaz electrifies it, causing it to attract small particles like bits of hair or paper. It was believed that if you wore topaz on your left arm or hung it around your neck it could break all enchantments that may have been cast upon you. Topaz is rumored to improve vision give life security, protect one from poverty and remove adversity, misfortune and melancholy. The Egyptians believed topaz was colored by the golden glow of the sun god Ra; thus it was used as a powerful amulet to protect them from harm. Leverage your dollars junious r. stanton Celebrating our 54th Anniversary “Although African Americans make up 13-percent of the U.S. population, just seven-percent (7%) of small business are owned by Blacks. Access to capital, clientele, and other resources hinder many Black folks from starting business, despite our long history of entrepreneurship. Organizations like the Empowerment Experiment, the Black Owned Business Network, and Recycling Black Dollars are hoping to encourage African Americans to patronize Black businesses, but there is still more work to do.” African-Americans Have 1.1 Trillion in Buying Power, Are We Putting Our Money To Good Use? Britni Danielle http://www.clutchmagonline.com/2014/02/africanamericans-1-1-trillion-dollars-buying-power-puttinggood-use/ Researchers and analysts tell us we have over one trillion dollars in purchasing power but when you take a serious look at our people and our communities you wouldn’t know it. Yes we buy cars, TVs, clothing, houses and other gizmos and gadgets but overall we have very little to show for all this money that supposedly comes through our fingers. In fact if the numbers are correct and I have no reason not to believe they are, it means we are very unsophisticated when it comes to using our money to gain wealth and collectively empower ourselves economically. If we have access to over a trillion dollars annually, where are our factories, where are our co-operative farms, why are our HBCUs facing financial ruin and why don’t we have an economic strategy for the twenty-first century? When you look at our communities it is obvious we are a dependent people. One could say we are merely mindless consumers. We don’t own the gas stations in our neighborhoods, we don’t own the cleaners, the wig stores, the grocery stores or much of anything else for that matter. Recent immigrants come here and buy land, open stores in our communities, set up distribution centers to import their favorite foods; they take over the stores in our neighborhoods and refuse to even hire our people. Back in the 40’s African-Americans in cities like New how I am harry polis It has been a while since I wrote for my SCOOP, USA column. I haven't not felt well enough to write and type my articles because I have very painful arthritis in both hands, feet, my back, and most everywhere else. Typing is agony. Jaynee has helped me before and she will help me get some columns out now. She corrects and types my columns, but she sometimes has problems with her hands too so we'll pay it by ear. I see so much wrong in our society. This past election was terrible. The turn out was only about thirtysix percent. The Republicans are going to try to damage or end Obama's legacy. They have already blocked him at every turn. We all suffer for their interference and hate. I'm looking forward to President Obama's using Executive Orders to hasten programs he's tried to establish for our benefit. In Pennsylvania and Philadelphia in particular, Education and Health have been suffering under Corbett. I'm pleased he'll be gone in January and we can get started rebuilding our schools and get onboard with Obamacare for the poor through Medicaid. I believe our POTUS is going to raise the minimum wage too through an executive order. So much hate and resentment is floating around toward our president and liberal people. Billionaires, particularly the Koch brothers, have sown racial and class differences especially in the Midwest and South. Gerrymandering, decreased voting hours and Voter Identification laws have purposely cut minority ability to vote. When Republicans win elections, they give tax breaks to the rich and cut back on benefits for the poor and working class. The Supreme Court has too often allowed Republican strategies to prevail and we are the poorer for it. Who we elect to state offices in those off-year elections matters because the people elected choose most of the state and local judges. Those rulings constitute what goes before the Supreme Court. We must all take responsibility for elections and change. Through electronic media--our computers and smart phones--we spread the reality of racial inequity, police overreaction, and our opinions. The Republicans are staging a war on minorities, working people, and women. It's up to us to fight...and win. York and Philadelphia started selective patronage campaigns to force businesses to hire our people, treat us with dignity and respect us as an economic block. Booker T. Washington, Marcus Garvey, Noble Drew Ali and Elijah Muhammad all espoused economic self-sufficiency, ethnocentric co-operation and mutual aid. What happened to that philosophy? Why are we so disorganized economically? The Black Power and Black Nationalists movements of the ‘60’s and 70’s called for economic expansion, espoused a move from dependency to empowerment. But the government’s counter insurgency operation called COINTELPRO undermined our push for liberation and the powers that be made up their minds they were going to destroy any effort on the part of African-Americans to raise our consciousness and come together as a factor to take advantage of our dollars and spending. Africans in America are essentially the only group in this pluralistic and ethnic conscious country who do not stick together or have an economic plan for viability and sustainability. Statistically we are worse off today than we were forty years ago during the racial apartheid and color caste because at least back then we were forced to support each other. Integration/assimilation was a cruel joke mainly because we were not at the table to define what it would mean for us as a people. “We can shop where we want, eat where we want and get almost any job at the big fancy corporation down the street. Many of us earn more money than we could have in a segregated society and are given opportunities that are more consistent with our chosen skill sets. The problem for our community, I humbly submit, is that we did not properly negotiate the terms of our integration. The pride that Dr. King’s father instilled in him is lost for millions of youth who are being educated by people who don’t care about them. Integration, for the most part, was simply prolonged assimilation, like moving into someone else’s home and giving up the keys to your own. You are happy to be moving into a bigger house, but soon realize that you can’t go into someone else’s house and move around the furniture. Also, while you’re renting a room, they are paying the mortgage, which means that their kids (not yours) are going to own the house when all the hard work is done. Many of us see the golden carrot of a higher salary without understanding the risk that is inherent in allowing your family to depend on the descendants of your historical oppressors. Even the most educated among us are raised to sell our services to bidders who extract our best and brightest like oil being lifted from the soil of Nigeria. People with six figure jobs are living paycheck-to-paycheck, further heightening the economic dependency that makes you impotent when it’s time to stand up for your rights. Like an intelligent woman who marries a wealthy man, you must ensure that you still have something to hold onto in the event that your relationship turns into an abusive one. Sadly, however, many of us have thrown economic caution to the wind.” Was Integration A Good Thing For Black People, Probably Not Dr Boyce Watkins http://blackbluedog.com/2013/03/news/dr-boyce-was-in- SCOOP U.S.A. - Friday, November 28, 2014 -5 tegration-a-good-thing-for-black-people-probably-not/ Don’t get me wrong I’m not calling for a return to the blatant oppression, violence and terror we suffered a few decades ago. While that is changed somewhat, the mentality behind it has not as we can see in Ferguson and even our own towns and cities. The one thing Martin Luther King Jr did was to tie the freedom struggle with economics. He knew deep down inside appealing to the morality and goodness of whites wasn’t going to get it done. The Montgomery Bus Boycott was the blueprint for social change and unfortunately we went away from it. Focused economic boycotts, planned and well executed civil disobedience and non-compliance worked. For three hundred eighty-one days Blacks folks in Montgomery Alabama in the heart of a virulent racist state stuck together and stood together to force major changes that helped destroy apartheid in the US despite the state sanctioned violence directed against them. We need to revisit this strategy and the tactic of selective patronage! We need to leverage our dollars to get what we need. But first we need to realize we are still living in an unjust society, a racist culture that demonizes and criminalizes us at will. We do not live in a post racial era, that whole notion is nonsense. What can we do about it? We can organize and boycott. Boycotts are effective today, more so. “What is more powerful than one-man onevote? It is voting with your dollar. It is fighting capitalism with capitalism. How can you take activists across the globe and unite them with power to reshape the global economy? It’s the power of the boycott. When you use boycott as a campaign tool it can be very successful. Take for example Gandhi and the British Raj salt tax march in the 1930’s when thousands of ordinary people united under the cause of producing salt without paying the Raj tax. They were ultimately successful. For every dollar you withhold from a corporation you remove – on average –x1.33 the original amount. For every $5 you remove from BP they actually lose $6.60 in revenue. This number can be found by using the stock compared to its sales. The boycott power against Coca-Cola is $5 per every $1 withheld since its stock is 5x its sales.” The Power of Boycott Voting With Your Dollar http://www.examiner.com/article/the-power-of-boycottvoting-with-your-dollar If we are to have self-respect and more importantly forge a place at the economic table we must be strategic. We must save and create vehicles for capital so we have money to start businesses. We must use our dollars wisely. We can promote alliances with other groups, cooperate on a mutually beneficial basis and we can use our dollars to punish our enemies and do have enemies both within and outside our communities. We need to wake up and see this country for what it is not as a melting pot but as a pluralistic society made up of many ethnic and cultural groups. No one will respect us as long as we remain dependent and disorganized. We need to rethink the notion of Black Power and solidarity. Our strategy should be to work together as a people to create opportunities for ourselves instead of being totally dependent upon our enemies and competitors for survival. We have the means, do we have the motive, courage and vision is the remaining question. EMSDC CEO welcome celebration Valarie J. Together they would sit on the moonlight on that big front porch in Abbeyville, Alabama. When Elijah came courting he would bring his guitar. He would play and sing and Ruby would join in. His parents would leave them alone as long as they could still hear music coming from the porch." In an exclusive interview, Martha provided a rich testimony of her parents before and after her birth, their move to Detroit when she was only one year old and the role of music and dance in he lives of African Americans. When asked about the function of music in her own life, Martha Reeves looked straight ahead and explained: "I have always thought of music as a way out of he ordinary, mundane obligations of life. While in high school glee clubs and choirs, our singing time always seemed to end to soon." Jazz Era in Detroit Before Motown Writing in the book, Before Motown: A History of Jazz in Detroit, Lars B'Jorn writes: "There was music in Detroit before Motown in the 1960's. Detroit has a remarkable jazz history, which in fact, made contributions to the Motown Sound. Jazz historians have usually passed by Detroit when discussing the development of Jazz... Jazz emerged as a distinct type of music at the beginning of the century [20th century]. Its pioneers were African Americans who drew upon musical traditions within and outside their community: blues, ragtime, tin pan alley, popular songs, and brand brass music. Once Jazz was born it went through rapid stylistic changes..." At Brady's request, District Council 21 of the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades (IUPAT) volunteered to repaint the bridge. Painting began this week. “This has been an eyesore in the community for too long. But, thanks to IUPAT it will soon be spruced up and will be recognized as a historic landmark,” Brady said. Holmesburg Civic Association President Richard E. Frizell says, “For 15 years a lot of people tried to make this happen. It is not that others didn’t try but when Congressman Brady stepped up, he was able to bring the right players to the table; he got it done. This is such a positive thing for our community, and painting this rusty trestle brightens our world, and brings new recognition to our historic bridge.” Attendees included: Richard Frizell, President, Holmesburg Civic Association; Fred Moore, Holmesburg Civic Association; Joe Ashdale, Assistant Business Manager and Secretary/ Treasurer International Union of Painters & Allied Trades; Rachael Shipkin, representing Conrail; and Leo Gallagher, owner of Jupiter Painting. A formal ribbon cutting will unveil an updated technology center at the school to enhance their current curriculum. The center will include a total of 36 technology work stations and everything needed to inspire creative learning. The school educates approximately 300 high school students and has a tremendous ratio of students who move onto college. This will be the third donation the Brown family has made to an educational institution needing funding and support that they are unable to gain elsewhere. These were donations in communities that could not have financed the projects otherwise, due to a lack of district funding. “Our mission is to Bring Joy to the Lives of the People We Serve and we are dedicated to helping the communities we do business in,” states Jeff Brown, President and CEO of Brown’s Super Stores. “We are excited to bring cutting-edge technology to the students of the Kipp DuBois Collegiate Academy and feel that this addition to the school’s curriculum will help better prepare the students for college and careers later in life.” The center was also sponsored by U.S. Global Glow and Precise Graphix Décor Company. The Philadelphia Food Fight battle of the neighborhoods Celebrating our 54th Anniversary The Fairmount Community Development Corporation hosted its annual fundraiser, attracting over 400 attendees to support the great work of the CDC. This year's theme, The Philadelphia FOOD FIGHT "Battle of the Neighborhoods" was a neighborhood party, on Thursday November 20, 2014 from 6pm - 9pm. This amazing event was filled with tons of food, music & drinks inside the breathtaking Girard College Campus at 2101 S. College Ave Philadelphia, PA 19121. Chefs presented their dishes for a friendly neighborhood food fight in the hopes to be crowned the Art Museum Area's very best! A few participating restaurants included Vitri's Allaspina Restaurant, Jack’s Firehouse, Mugshots Coffeehouse, McCrossen's, RyBread | RyBrew, Trio, Butter's Soul Food, Rembrandt's Restaurant, Bridgids Restaurant and many more. Project Home participated for the first time, featuring a special signature item, Sister Mary’s Sinfully Delicious Cranberry Sauce. FOOD FIGHT attendees sampled bites from local Art Museum area restaurants and voted for their favorite dishes in the following categories: Best Cocktail/Mocktail, Best Dessert and Best Main Dish. Hickory Lane American Bistro took the prize for Best Main Dish, Mugshots Coffeehouse won the crowd over naming them the Best Dessert in the house, and Bridgids Restaurant’s easily won the Food Fight attendees over taking home the title of Best Cocktail. A few special guests stopped through for the night including Council President Darrell Clarke, Councilman William Greenlee. This year the Fairmount CDC is welcoming its new Executive Director Shahid Rana. Shahid is a seasoned community development specialist with demonstrated experience in urban design, community planning, commercial corridor development, and creative marketing and branding. Before his role as Executive Director, Shahid served as a Project Manager in the Neighborhood Initiatives division at Cooper’s Ferry Partnership (CFP), in Camden, NJ. When asked about his new role as Executive Director, Shahid stated, “I'm truly grateful to have supportive residents and a business community who understands the mission of the FCDC in building a desirable neighborhood and destination.” Battle of The Neighborhoods included a few restaurants from outside of the Greater Art Museum Area who competed in re-inventing Tony Luke’s World Famous Philadelphia Cheesesteak. Competitors demonstrated their skills in a "Chopped" style FOOD FIGHT challenge including Chef J.R. Robinson of Kitchen Cray from Washington, D.C who was a competitor on Season 13 of Fox Networks Hell’s Kitchen and Chef Rob Dupree of Eatible Delights Catering representing our City of Brotherly Love. Philly’s own Tony Luke Jr. and hometown hero hosted the FOOD FIGHT, “This is a great event for a great cause,” Tony mentioned while introducing the competitors. After 20 minutes of competition, the judges and audience named Chef Rob Dupree of Eatible Delights Catering, the winner of Battle of The Neighborhoods “Chopped Style.” Hometown took the crown over visiting competitors from Washington, D.C. “I don’t know what they did with my cheesesteaks but they took it up 10 notches!” comments Tony Luke Jr. as the competition came to a close. Event sponsors included Girard College, Zipcar, Drexel Medicine, Yards Brewery, Wells Fargo- Philadelphian Branch, Philly Food Works, and Enterprise Rent-aCar. “This year's Food Fight highlighted the many great businesses and restaurants in the Greater Art Museum Area. Small businesses are the backbone of our communities, I'm happy to provide that platform for the restaurants to showcase their talents. I think the Fairmount and the Greater Art Museum Area have the opportunity to be one of the best food neighborhoods in the region. Not many places have two distinct and unique business corridors like Fairmount and West Girard Avenue,” said “Education is our passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to the people who prepare for it today." -Malcolm X SCOOP U.S.A. - Friday, November 28, 2014 - 9 Kharisma Mcilwaine Emcee for the night, Council President Darrell Clarke, Shahid Rana Executive Director of the Fairmount CDC, Councilman William Greenlee Sarah Bloom photos Awards and prizes Chef Rob Dupree & Chef J.R. About The Fairmount CDC: The Fairmount CDC’s mission is to foster the improvement of the residential, commercial, and social fabric of the Fairmount neighborhood, while preserving its character and diversity. Our service area is bounded by two commercial corridors (Girard & Fairmount Avenues), Fairmount Park, and the Eastern State Penitentiary (Corinthian Avenue). The organization was formed in 1999 by a group of civic-minded Fairmount neighbors who sought to take advantage of the neighborhood improvement opportunities by creating a non-profit community development corporation. The organization was awarded non-profit status in 2001 and completed a resident-driven neighborhood plan in 2003. Although Fairmount CDC has remained a small organization, the diversity of the programming and recent accomplishments speak volumes about the capacity and willingness of the Fairmount CDC to get the job done. Berry Gordy enters the discourse circle on this note: "Another attention getter was Martha Reeves. She was Mickey Stevenson's secretary and got her big break one day when Mary didn't show up at the studio for a recording session. To satisfy union rules, Mickey had to make sure there was a body behind the microphone. Martha turned out to be that body. All that was required of her was to stand there and do nothing. But when that music started, she took her shot -- surprising everybody with her powerful, soulful voice, wailing like there was no tomorrow." Lover You've Gone From Me And Left Behind So Many Memories Here's our old favorite record (Come and get 'em) I can't stand to hear it anymore Here's some old lingering love (Come and get 'em) "It's in my heart and it's tearing it apart," Martha sings and kinda shouts in her delivery. When I asked made that observation to her during our conversation, she said: "My grandfather was a minister. .Metropolitan AME. It was a family church on DuBois and Leland. Jesus Met The Woman at The Well Who were those Gospel Divas that served as an example for Martha? Before the questions was finished, she answers: " Clara Ward. Shirley Caesar and The Caravans. Our first song we won with was "Jesus Met The Woman At The Well." Not only did my parents play gospel music all day but my Mama idolized Billie Holiday. See, they played guitar and sang as well. My Dad played down home Blues similar to John Lee Hooker and Jimmie Reed. We had music all the time. There was no TV at that time. We spent a lo of time with our parents." Scene # 7. Martha: "My idol, first of all, was Lena Horne. I saw her at the Paradise Theatre in Detroit when I was three years old. I wanted to be a singer like her. I didn't look anything like her. I didn't think I'd ever be in show business, but I just dreamed to be like Lena Horne. One day. My brother went into the military and joined the Columbia Music Club. He sent me records by Nancy Wilson, Dinah Washington, Ella Fitzgerald, Mahalia Jackson and Sarah Vaughn. I studied all the Divas. "Now in 2014, Martha Reeves is not only one of the great divas in popular song, she is a stylist par excellence. State Rep. Cherelle L. Some of the news is happy and some of it is sad. The sad is a fallen leaf named John Curry. John lived in Germantown. He was an architect and a very good one at that. He was a member of Enon Baptist Church and he was a part of a community organization called “Men Who Care”. From my understanding, he had a heart attach while driving and crashed which led to his passing. John was a good man. He tried to give of himself whenever and where ever he could and I’m not just trying to make him sound good because it is not necessary. He was not perfect but if you were to ask anyone about him I don’t think that you would hear one bad word about him. It was like that when it came to him. He would give you the shirt off his back, which is rare today. As a matter of fact just last week “The Men Who Care”, had a coat drive giving out coats to people in need because of the cold whether that has come upon us. They didn’t just give out old dirty coats that no one would want anymore -- they gave out nice coats that not only looked nice but many of them were warm and it was stuff that anyone would have been glad to get. Now that is what I call giving back and that is what Men Who Care is really all about. Organizations like the Seven Gees, Germantown’s Finest, The Philadelphia Association of Former Gang Members and Friends and Men Who Care, are not doing what they do because they have nothing better to do with Justice Continued from page 3 ery to include Emmett Till, Tanisha Anderson, Rodney King, Trayvon Martin, Rekia Boyd, Tarika Wilson, Jordan Davis, Renisha McBride, Eric Garner and many, many more. We cannot ignore the rules, both written and unwritten, that reduce Black existence to unfulfilled dreams. It is structural racism that allows the vast racial disparities between the police force and community. It is structural racism that leads to militarized policing of communities of color. It is structural racism that forces grieving parents to have to prove, and even appeal to the United Nations, that the life of their son or daughter did matter; that they did not deserve to die. I am beginning to see that there a more positive young folks than the negative ones, it is just that the negative young people get all the ink from the newspapers. I bet if they were to go to Ferguson Mo. they would be able to talk with some very positive people instead of talking to people that want to burn the city down because the right verdict was not reached. What does Christmas mean to you? To some folk it means hard work. The stores are crowded with shoppers, the post office is overflowing with mail and the trains, buses and planes are carrying record crowds. To some Christmas means that Santa is coming with his sleigh full of goodies. Then to some Christmas means a visit home. Surely this is the best time of all the year to be with family and friends. To some people Christmas is a time of sorrow, loneliness and sad memories. They look back over the year and think of the loved ones who have left them since last Christmas. Then to some Christmas means its party time. Time to shake, rattle and roll. Time to cut the rug or cut the mustard. A time to go out and Boogie on Down! Then there are millions of people for which Christmas means nothing. They do not know Jesus. They could care less about the Christmas season and December 25th, for them it’s just another day! When Mary and Joseph came to the inn, the inn-keeper said, “We have no room for you.” My father’s children, this man missed Christmas and all of its meaning. He had many guests in his hotel, but they were soon gone and forgotten. If he had allowed Jesus to be born there this would have changed his hotel and his whole life. Today, this Christmas season there are people saying “I have no room for Jesus” Their hearts and lives are filled with other things. But if we are to have a Christmas that will be pleasing unto God, we must throw out all else and make room for Jesus! Question: I applied for a Social Security card for my child at the hospital and the card came back with the first name misspelled. What should I do? Answer: Go to your local Social Security office or card center to ask for a corrected card. We need to see at least two original documents proving your child’s: U.S. citizenship; and Identity. We also must see proof of your identity, as the parent. The documents you show us must be either originals or copies certified by the issuing agency. We cannot accept photocopies or notarized copies. To find out more, go to www.socialsecurity.gov/ssnumber. There, you can learn what documents you need, fill out and print an application, and then bring or mail the information to us. You may also want to read the publication, Social Security Numbers For Children, available at www.socialsecurity.gov/pubs. Question: What are some of the documents Social Security will accept as proof of identity for a child? Answer: While you can use a birth certificate to prove age or citizenship, you cannot use it as proof of identity. Social Security needs evidence of the child’s existence after birth. An acceptable document must show your child’s name, identifying information, and, preferably, a recent photograph. Your child must be present unless the picture ID also shows your child’s biographical information (i.e., age, date of birth, and parents’ names). We generally can accept a non-photo identity document if it has enough information to identify the child (such as the child’s name and age, date of birth, and parents’ names). We prefer to see the child’s U.S. passport. If that document is not available, we may accept the child’s: Adoption decree; Doctor, clinic, or hospital record; Religious record (e.g., baptismal record); Daycare center or school record; or School identification card. All documents must be either originals or copies certified by the issuing agency. We cannot accept photocopies or notarized copies of documents. To find out more, visit www.socialsecurity.gov/ssnumber. There, you can also find out what documents you need, fill out and print an application, and then bring or mail the needed information to Social Security. You may also want to read the publication, Social Security Numbers For Children, available at www.socialsecurity.gov/pubs. Question: What is the earliest age that I can apply for my Social Security retirement benefits? Answer:To apply for Social Security retirement benefits, you must be at least 61 years and 9 months of age and want your benefits to start in the next 3 months. You can begin receiving retirement benefits as early as age 62, but if you take benefits before your full retirement age, your benefits will be reduced permanently. If you’d like to test the waters and get an idea of what your benefit amounts would be at different retirement ages, visit our Retirement Estimator at www.socialsecurity.gov/estimator. Question: Can I delay my retirement benefits and receive benefits as a spouse only? How does that work? Answer: It depends on your age. If you are between full retirement age and age 70, and your spouse is receiving Social Security benefits, you should apply for retirement benefits and request that the payments be suspended. Then, you can choose to receive benefits on your spouse’s Social Security record. By doing so, you will earn delayed retirement credits up to age 70, as long as you do not collect your benefits on your own earnings record. Later, when you do begin receiving benefits on your own record, those payments could be higher than they would have been otherwise because you earned delayed retirement credits. Question: What is Supplemental Security Income (SSI)? Answer: SSI provides monthly income to people with limited income and financial resources. People who never worked at a job that withdrew Social Security tax won’t qualify for Social Security, but may still be eligible for SSI. To be eligible, an individual must be a citizen and resident of the United States or be a noncitizen lawfully admitted for permanent residence. There are, however, some noncitizens granted a special immigration status that are also eligible. To get SSI, an individual’s financial resources (savings and assets) cannot be more than $2,000 ($3,000, if married). Recipients must be age 65 or older, or blind or disabled. For more information, please read SSI or What You Need To Know When You Receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI). Both are available at www.socialsecurity.gov/pubs. Question: Are Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits subject to federal income tax? Answer: No. SSI payments are not subject to federal taxes. If you get SSI, you will not receive an annual form SSA-1099. However, your Social Security benefits may be subject to income tax. Learn more at www.socialsecurity.gov. Question: Can children qualify for disability benefits? Answer: There are two Social Security disability programs that provide for disabled children. Under the Supplemental Security income (SSI) program, a child from birth to age 18 may receive monthly payments based on disability or blindness if: —The child has an impairment or combination of impairments that meets the definition of disability for children; and The income and resources of the parents and the child are within the allowed limits. Under Social Security, a child who is age 18 or older may receive monthly benefits based on disability or blindness if: The child has an impairment or combination of impairments that meet the definition of disability for adults; The disability began before age 22; and the adult child’s parent worked long enough to be insured under Social Security and is receiving retirement or disability benefits or is deceased. Under both of these programs, the child must not be doing any substantial work. The child also must have a medical condition that has lasted or is expected to last for at least 12 months or result in death. Learn more at www.socialsecurity.gov/applyfordisability. Weekend DRINK SPECIALS and Other Specials Celebrating our 54th Anniversary health News Dealing with holiday depression by Alphonso Gibbs, Jr., LCSW-C, LICSW The six weeks encompassing Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s—collectively called “the holidays”—are for most a magically unique time of year. But for many, the holidays bring hurt. Caused by factors including the weather, separation, death, stress, unrealistic expectations, hyper-sentimentality, guilt, or overspending, holiday depression—also called the “holiday blues”—can zap the merriment out of even the most wonderful time of the year. Holiday depression affects one million people every year. Men and women, young and old, all fall victim to feelings of sadness, loneliness, anxiety, guilt, and fatigue during this emotionally charged season. Men’s Health Network offers the following 10 suggestions to help you identify and ward off—or at least better cope with—potential sources of holiday depression. 1. Acknowledge that you’re hurting – Others may expect certain attitudes and behaviors from you that you may not feel. The retail industry’s “holiday hype” presents an overly sentimental, nostalgic, and even imaginary notion of the holidays (usually to try to sell you something). Sill, feelings of sadness, loneliness, or depression don’t automatically vanish just because it’s the holidays. Acknowledge your pain, be open and honest with others, refuse to feel guilty, and get help if necessary. It’s ok to laugh! Don’t be afraid! You won’t be struck by a bolt of lightning for laughing! 2. Have a plan to deal with your feelings – Try to surround yourself with people who care about and support you—family, friends, or church members. Invest yourself in an exercise program (aerobic activities such as walking, running, cycling, etc., are recommended because of their mood-elevating ability). Take time to write your thoughts down, sort of a journal of your feelings. Sometimes, just the act of putting your thoughts on paper helps to “get it out of you”. If necessary, see your doctor or therapist. And Classifed Ads Auctions: Waterfront Home Oak Island, NC. 4BR/2BA w/Pier, 2 Boat Lifts, Orig. $650K, Auction Price $349K. Taxes Under 3K. Over 50 years Strong, Stable, Werner Enterprises: 1-855-581-6347 This little space can bring big $$$$$$$$ results to your business learn to say “no.” Others’ expectations are not a reason for your own mental health to suffer. 3. Set realistic expectations – Keep your expectations realistic rather than perfectionistic. Prioritize and reduce self-imposed holiday preparations. Delegate responsibilities. Realistically plan your budget, spending, and shopping. Do less and enjoy more. Obsessing over endless details is bound to change this long-awaited, once-a-year season from a time of exuberance to one of exhaustion. Make it a point to be honest with yourself, and if necessary and possible, limit the time and situations/people you want to be around. When you’ve had enough of either, make sure that you have a way to leave or step away. If possible, let someone you trust know in advance, so that you aren’t put in an even more stressful position of having to explain yourself when you “unplug”. 4. Take time for yourself – Why is it called holiday depression? Because, for most people, these feelings don’t occur at other times of the year. Remind yourself of what you enjoyed during the previous months, then continue them during the holidays. Make yourself a priority! Instead of a “Discount Double Check,” give yourself an “Emotional Double Check”. Give yourself permission to feel what you feel. Just don’t stay there too long! Getting enough rest, eating and drinking in moderation, exercising, and continuing other favorite activities can maintain normalcy, routine, control, and predictability. 5. Consider that your depression may actually be caused by this time of year – Seasonal Affective Disorder, or SAD, occurs because of reduced exposure to sunlight—which is just what happens during the holiday season when daylight hours are shorter. Check with your doctor to see if light therapy might be beneficial for you. 6. Help others – Soup kitchens, homeless shelters, nursing homes, churches, and scores of other organizations can always use volunteers, especially at critical times of the year. Additionally, you’ll benefit from the company of other people around you rather than being alone. And, help others help you! Tell those who care about you what you do or don’t need from them. They often don’t know how to help, or what to say, but want to. 7. Bury the hatchet – Perfect families don’t magically appear during the holidays, but family conflicts can. “Letting go” and forgiving can help heal past wounds. Additionally, family feuds can even be deliberately set aside until after the high-tension holidays in order to facilitate the peace and enjoyment of everyone at this special time. 8. Start your own traditions – Both families and traditions change with time. (Every tradition had to start somewhere!) Rather than reminiscing over the “good old days,” accept the fact that change may be necessary, grasp the season as it is now, look forward to the future, and create your own family traditions that can be enjoyed and even preserved for future generations. 9. Keep your alcohol intake low – Don’t pour gasoline on a fire. Remember, alcohol has a depressive effect on your nervous system, so if you’re experiencing the holiday blues, drinking too much alcohol will only worsen your depression. 10. Rededicate yourself to your spirituality – The “reaTHURSDAY • DECEMBER 4, 2014 Evening 7 PM 7:30 8 PM 8:30 CBS E# ABC E^ NBC E10 PBS E12 MYN E17 FOX E29 TBN E48 CW E57 ION E61 DISC DISN ESPN LIFE NICK TBS TLC USA WGN son for the season” is often swallowed up by maddening materialism that can distract from the history, meaning, and significance of holiday celebrations. Step back, slow down, and refocus on transcendent, eternal matters. Rededicate yourself to spiritual pursuits, such as church attendance, church work, prayer life, and other disciplines. Regain the focus originally intended by this time of year. That is like an ocean saying that it has no room for the tide. That’s like the heavens saying that they have no room for the stars. That’s like the garden saying that it has no room for the flowers. O’ beloved we’ve got to make room for Jesus if we are to capture the True meaning of Christmas. And I want you to know that, when you make room for Jesus, you’ll realize that Christmas means that our Savior is born! -Born to set an example on how to live. -Born to die for our sins. -Born to be raised for our justification. -Born to ascend on high, look low and make intercession for us. -Born to give hope to us that one day by and by we’ll reach that land where the wicked will cease from troubling and the weary shall be at rest!
