Dan served as a communications specialist in Iraq.
One veteran and his pet …
W
hen Sgt. Dan Spangler USMC returned from his deployment in Iraq in 2003, he was
hurting. Dan was injured jumping from a truck when firefight broke out at a checkpoint. While injured, he stayed in Iraq for two more months until he was sent home; upon
returning he adopted a puppy and named him Spanky. The two quickly became inseparable.
Dan saved Spanky from a shelter, but Dan says Spanky saved him, too. Spanky became a loyal confidante and companion through years of painful recovery.
There are other military veterans just like Dan: wounded by war, both physically and
emotionally, who rely on pets for comfort and support. Many of these veterans experience
financial hardships and face difficult choices that sometimes mean giving up their pet, the
companion they need.
Dan wants every veteran to
“Keep His Spanky.”
So he and Spanky are hitting the road for
a 6,000+ mile awesome adventure across
America to raise awareness and funds for
Operation: Keep Your Spanky.

… embarking on an awesome adventure to help
other veterans keep their pets.
Dan and Spanky will venture across the country,
starting at Camp Lejeune, NC on April 26, 2015, traveling to Camp Pendleton, CA by any means available:
mostly on foot and occasionally by car—or even
wagon, train, plane—relying on a network of supporters along the way. Dan and Spanky will reverse
course and return to Camp Lejeune on Memorial Day,
May 25, 2015.
Along the way, Dan and Spanky will update their
social media channels on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube, all directed to a national audience
of supportive and dedicated animal-loving fans, military veterans and their families.
When his paws get tired, Spanky can rest
in his spiffy new collapsible cart!
A GPS device on Spanky’s collar will allow supporters
to track Dan and Spanky’s progress across the country
in real time on KeepYourSpanky.com.

Dan Keep Their Spankys
Operation: Keep Your Spanky supports responsible,
life-long pet ownership by providing financial and in-kind assistance for military families and veteran pet owners during
times of financial crisis. Assistance may include
providing pet food or paying for veterinary bills.
Education and referrals to other sources of assistance may also be included. All requests for
assistance are reviewed on a case-by-case
basis.
By helping keep their pets in their
homes, we also help unneeded turn in of
pets at the shelter and to other rescue
groups. We are working to prevent an issue
rather than just reacting to it.
Sponsorship of Dan and Spanky’s cross-country adventure will directly impact military
veterans and their beloved pets by improving stability, morale and general livelihood.
