In summertime, Astilbe chinensis var. davidii and Lilium speciciosum (stargazer lily) take command of this border. In the Pink Border In the Mauve/Purple Border In the northwestern quadrant, highlights of The Mauve/Purple Border include subtle and vibrant iris varieties, phlox, beebalm, verbena, early crocus and a host of late-blooming asters. In midsummer, Limonium latifolium (sea lavender) and Platycodon grandiflorus (balloon flower) star in this border. Stars of The White Border, in the southeastern sector, include delicate columbines, cosmos, fragrant lillies and iris, tulips and daffodils throughout the spring. Later glories include Japanese anemone and asters, supported by a host of delicate yet persistent annuals all season long. In midsummer, graceful snakeroot, Actaea racemosa, and bold Phlox paniculata ‘Midsummer White’ make a pristine pairing. In the White Border In the Blush/Cream/Grey Border The Blush/Cream/Grey Border, completing the southwestern garden sector, displays the dramatic bear’s breeches, plume poppy, tall meadow rue, and goat’s beard, supported by a cast of silver toned beauties—lamb’s ear, santolina and artemisia. In summertime, regal Lilium brownii and blushing Acanthus hungaricus (bear’s breeches) distinguish this remarkable border.
