BIOGRAPHY : MICHAEL BARNETT
What do you call the man responsible for dressing the most stylish man in the entertainment industry?
Most people call him Mike B. As the in-house stylist and fashion consultation for Bad Boy Entertainment
for nearly a decade, Mike B helped shape the image of the new generation of Bad Boy and the megastar
known as Sean Combs turned P. Diddy . His story reads like a hip hop Cinderella tale, going from an
assistant’s intern to an industry heavy weight, now owner of Bogard Management & Consulting LLC,
specializing in styling, image consulting and design.
Born in New Rochelle and raised between Jamaica and New York City’s White Plains, Yonkers and Mount
Vernon, he credits his parent’s Jamaican/Cuban roots for his innate sense of style and love for clothing.
His Mount Vernon roots introduced him to the likes of Groovey Lew, a veteran stylist and pioneer in hip hop
fashion, who ushered him into the business. After a chance mall meeting on one of Groove’s shopping trips
for Puff, Mike began to assist Groove and later intern for Puff ’s then executive assistant, Leota Blacknor.
As an intern, Mike watched and waited for his opportunity to grow in the industry. “I always knew I wanted
my own company, I just didn’t know how to execute.” His ascension through the Bad Boy ranks provided
invaluable schooling to all aspects of the music business, including A&R, media relations and marketing
with Combs’ boutique firm, Blue Flame. As his face became more familiar in the industry, so did his signature
poise and style. “Why don’t you let Mike B shop for you?” As fellow Bad Boys took notice of his style,
a simple suggestion ignited the biggest break in his career.
For the next seven years, Mike B carved his niche as Combs’ personal stylist and Bad Boy Entertainment
fashion consultant, styling the entire roster including: Mase, Mario Winans, Shyne and Da Band. Dressing P.Diddy and his team of “B-Boys”
took Mike around the world to exotic places such as Morocco, South Africa and Barcelona and exposed him to a world of international flavors.
Beyond styling music personalities, he became co-creative director for Combs’ groundbreaking clothing label, Sean John; overseeing
all aspects of design and marketing. His growing list of accomplishments include movie credits (“Carlito’s Way”), runway shows and shoe
collaborations with Nike and Adidas. In addition he worked on the legendary “Be” and “Vote or Die” ad campaigns. While he enjoyed
working with Puff , he remained curious about styling beyond the Bad Boy walls.
Mike B’s roster has included celebrities such as Nas, Three 6 Mafia, the Rocafella Family and athletes Dwayne Wade, Lamar Odom and Dwight
Howard to name a few. On the executive circuit, Mike has also served as personal stylist to Atlantic Records’ Craig Kallman and Kevin Liles
of Warner Music Group.
Currently working with longtime clients Chris Brown, Ludacris and media tycoon Steve Stoute in addition to Ne-Yo, comedian Mike Epps,
Maverick Carter, agent to Lebron James; Mike also serves as creative consultant/lifestyle fashion stylist for Roc-a-wear/Artful Dodger;
is the male fashion stylist at Bet’s 106th & Park working with the likes of Terrance J and ProStyle; and is a consultant, designer and creative
for Public School NYC.
Mike credits his attention to detail as his secret weapon, as well as his ability to “step their {clients’} game up in a believable way…
staying true to their character.”
