Circuit Maker - Hampton Senior High School
Circuit Maker Number 55 April 2015 Our Year 7s excel at Hampton! Hampton Senior High School was delighted to welcome our Year 7s this year, our first year as an independent public school. Classrooms had been renovated in preparation for their arrival and well designed landscaping adjacent to the classrooms has given our newest students some lovely shaded seating in the garden, overhung with weeping willows. Although there were some initial nerves and lost souls in search of far flung classes and teachers, our students have settled beautifully into high school and can find their way around the grounds now like’ old hands’. Not only have we welcomed new students, but also a new teaching team. Andrew Donaldson is our Year 7 Coordinator. Andrew teaches Science and Maths along with Dermot Blackweir and Meena Allen while Teagan Howard, Karen Cosson and Evans Mageto complete the team as our Society and Environment and English teachers. NAPLAN preparation is well under way, with classroom teachers revising essential skills and practices. Our students have shown commitment and diligence in the way they’ve approached their studies and we are delighted to have welcomed such a terrific group of children to our Hampton family. Having already been involved in some exciting activities at the school, the 7s have been able to ‘test the water’ of what it means to be a Hampton student. A swimming carnival held in Week 4 gave them an opportunity to relax and have fun while competing in novelty and regular swimming events. Lunch time sporting activities specifically for Year 7 students as well as whole school events such as our Harmony Day celebrations with bouncy castles, water fun and BBQ have also been hugely popular..…not to mention the music band , Sly Withers, who performed live! Students have been busy in class also. ‘Life Skills’ classes have supported our students as they settle into high school. Content covered has varied from positive decision making and identifying the consequences of choices we make to dealing with bullying and identifying behaviours. Students carry out bag checks, revise useful work strategies as well as undertake personal reflective practice and employ organisational skills to help them maximise learning time. In Science, students have been busy making mixtures and practising separation techniques, studying the ancient world in Society and Environment, writing persuasive texts and short stories in English and revising strategies and content in Maths. Cross curricular classes have been very popular, with many students sharing their excitement about metalwork, cooking, dance and many other classes, with teachers and peers. There are so many opportunities for Hampton students, not to mention the speciality programs as they move into the senior school. Although it’s been a relatively busy term, we know the action will heat up even more so as we move into second term with NAPLAN testing just around the corner and reports looming too. We look forward to filling you in on our latest escapades this term. New classroom Sausage sizzle at the carnival Robots Enjoying the pool Smartboard Principal's Perspective Mr Rod Buckenara, Principal Steven Beaton Principal Annette Barlow and Mariam Wali Ali (School Captains) When I started here at the beginning of the school year I knew a fair bit about Hampton from my time growing up in Kiara and, as an outsider, I had a positive impression of the place. In the weeks since, I have been astounded by the positive, friendly nature of the Hampton students and their ability to participate in a wide range of activities. I have been impressed by the enthusiasm and maturity of our School Captains Annette Barlow and Mariam Wali-Ali and their dedication to providing the student body with a voice in decision making. I have learnt from the dedication of my Senior Leadership Team and their persistent focus on action that is in the best interests of the students and I have marvelled at the innovative practices and engaged teaching in our classrooms. These aspects have been particularly evident given that, with the new school funding model, the new WACE courses and the introduction of Year 7s into high schools across the State, this has been a period of system wide change that has provided some significant challenges for us. Term 2 is an important one for all students with NAPLAN happening for our Year 7 & 9 students, exams for Years 11 & 12 and the start of Senior School Course Selection for our Year 10 students. Term 2 will also see work begin on our toilet upgrade along with a recently announced resurfacing of our basketball and tennis courts. As always, there will be our usual array of outstanding incursions and excursions for our Specialist and PE programs along with our continued focus on supporting student wellbeing through targeted Student Services initiatives and I would, again, encourage all families to be involved in these events or to attend our School Board and P&C meetings. As an insider now, I am really pleased to be a part of this dynamic school and am looking forward to leading Hampton into a period of sustained academic, sporting and social success that highlights the true skills and abilities of the very talented students and staff that we have working here. Thank you for making me welcome in the community and I hope all families had a safe and happy holiday break. This was a great day and everyone had a lot of fun. The boys played five straight games without a big break and managed to win all of the games apart from the first one. After having an impressive four wins and one loss, the boys played off for second place. They went down in a thriller but ended up finishing fourth out of the twelve teams. The girls played four games in total and won one game. Most girls have only played cricket in recent practise sessions, so it was a really pleasing result from the girls. The students all agreed at the end of the day this was more fun than what they were expecting. Some star players from the boys included: Josh Burton (captain) and Calvin Murphy. The star players from the girls included Sheldyn Cooper (captain) and Deeanah Cooper. The Arts Upper School Art Excursion On Wednesday March 11, they embarked on their annual Upper School Art Excursion to visit the ‘Sculpture by the Sea’ exhibition at Cottesloe Beach and the ‘Perspectives’ exhibition at the Art Gallery of Western Australia. They were also lucky enough to have a guided tour of Mariko Mori’s ‘Rebirth’ exhibition, while at AGWA. All exhibitions were full of exciting and inspirational artworks. The students enjoyed a beautiful morning at Cottesloe Beach interacting with the many weird and wonderful sculptures from over 70 local, interstate and international artists. They then moved on to explore the many amazing artworks at ‘Perspectives’, produced by last year’s talented WACE students. Finally they viewed Mariko Mori’s ‘Rebirth’ exhibition, which explored similar themes to those of some of their courses, including life, death and rebirth. The students took part in activities that built upon their knowledge through real life experience of the works and discussion. They also worked on their skills in critical analysis, which is an integral part of the Visual Arts syllabus. All in all, it was a visually satisfying day that gave our students a wonderful range of ideas and goals to work on in their own art making. From January 2-7 we were checked into The Century Plaza Hyatt in Beverly Hills where for four intense days I performed in front of hundreds of agents, producers, and casting directors. I performed a monologue, commercial, and a duologue (a scene with two people). After networking with all of the agencies I had 11 callbacks! One agency in-particular was extremely interested in me, they insisted on seeing me before we left LA. So we did and they offered me to sign with their agency and move to LA in the next 2-4 months. I’m sure you can imagine my joy. But slowly... very slowly, reality started to set in, but it wasn’t until I was home and went to school on the first day back, I realised that more than anything I wanted to stay and finish school. However I still waited one more week to make my final decision. To my astonishment, I received an email from an agency called The Crawford Agency which offered me a place in their agency and even better I didn’t have to relocate! I knew it was absolutely perfect for me. So now I am signed with The Crawford Agency which regularly send out auditions for me to film and then to send back over to them. It is still so surreal to me because it has all happened so fast, but I have had such incredible support from all of my family and friends and my mentor Mr M. Music Video Freedom” by Rob Walker. The song is part of a promotional campaign for Sam Childers, known as Machine Gun Preacher, a Christian outlaw who has dedicated his life to rescue children in the war zone of South Sudan to stop them from being kidnapped and killed. A Hollywood biopic which stars Gerald Butler as Childers was recently produced. It follows Sam’s effort to save the children of Sudan in collaboration with the Sudan People’s Liberation Army against the atrocities of the Lord’s Resistance Army. All proceeds of the song go towards Sam’s cause. Hampton Senior High School Media students were thrilled to be part of such an event. July. Mr Wilson and his mate Craig were in fine form as they asked eight rounds of questions, as well as getting patrons up to dance and compete in heads and tails. There was also a silent auction, many raffle and door prizes and ‘throw the coin close to the bottle”. Some groups really got into the swing of it with US boaters and ribbons to add to the already colourful table decorations. Thank you to all who attended and to the many businesses who donated prizes. We look forward to hearing from these students when they return and to seeing many photographs of the “Big Apple”. On Sunday March 14, Year 12 Media students were given the opportunity to be part of a professional music video production film set. Mr M led a supportive team consisting of Jessica Peyman, Danny Bretea, Renaai Carey, Jason Cappello and Mariam Wali Ali which filmed a clip to “For A star is born!! Congratulationss to Jessica Peyman Year 12 who has been signed to a talent group in Los Angeles, USA after auditioning in the holidays in LA. This means they will fly her over to LA for auditions and hopefully make her a star. YAY YAY Jessica’s story My LA adventure started in July last year when I auditioned for a scouting agency called iPop Down Under. I wasn’t expecting anything out of it, considering I learnt my script the night beforehand. However, the talent agent said she saw something special in me, and later that night I got a call from her saying she wanted to see me again the next day for a callback. So we went back the next day and she told us that out of the 1000 people they saw in Perth, they could only take 30 to LA the following January and she wanted to take me! We had to make a spilt decision on the spot and my mum and I turned to each other and we just said, “Yes!” Long story short, on December 28 my dad and I left for America! As soon as I got on the plane I was in an absolute dream-like state for the next two weeks. After a crazy number of hours on two different planes, we finally arrived in LA!!! We spent New Years in San Francisco on a boat on the San Francisco Bay. We then drove 12 hours to LA where my dreams were to come true. New York –Here We Come! On Friday March 20 the gym was decorated with balloons, flags and streamers of the US as a large number of students, school staff, families and friends gathered to participate in a quiz night to raise funds for the geography and drama students who are going to New York in ICT @ Hampton WACE results It’s always a pleasure to hear of the successes of our students and this year is no exception. A large number of students in Year 12 left Hampton with Certificates in Business, Tourism or Digital Media, Information and Technology at a Certificate II or even III level. Congratulations. Rotary Club of West Perth provided some financial support for the FIRST Lego League team to go to Sydney and commended the students for their confidence in presenting a report to the Club on 26 February this year. We are also delighted that our results in AIT were again above state average and three students went on to future study in Networking (Certificate IV), Bio-medical sciences and Anti-terrorism. Year 8 Cybersafety movie The whole school community has worked on improving awareness of AntiBullying strategies during the National Anti-Bullying Week 16 – 20 March. Across all ICT classes in Year 7 and Year 8 students focussed on Cyber-safety and responsible digital citizenship. The Year 8 Specialist ICT students took this to another level in a short span of time to create a movie about Cyber-safety. They have already shown a high degree of project management skills and improving communication skills. On Saturday 7 March, 20 of the 22 Year 7 ICT Specialist students attended a Robotics Workshop at Hampton S.H.S. It was very pleasing to see the high attendance and the two students with previous engagements were very disappointed they could not attend. The idea behind the workshop was to give the students an opportunity to make a good start in building and programming Robots. Everyone arrived promptly at 9.30am so Mr Thirlwell could start with a brief introduction and expectations. The students were so keen to get to work they did not want to stop for a break and it was on with building. The next two and a half hours flew by, as students built their robots with assistance from Mr Akella and Ms Meher. It did not take much to convince the students to stop for lunch as soon as they saw the Subway platters arrive. By 12.30pm the students had worked up a good appetite and made short work of the Subway sandwiches and cookies. After an enjoyable lunch, there was just enough time to wind up the day's activities and pack away before parents arrived. A big thank you to everyone who gave up their Saturday morning for the workshop – the Year 7s for attending, their parents for getting them to and from school, Ms Meher and Mr Akella, and special mention to Mr Akella for kindly collecting our lunch. VET certifications FLL (FIRST = For Interest in Research of Science and Technology), Macquarie University, Sydney 5 -6 December 2014 At the end of a frantic Term 4, the Year 9 team that participated in the State level of FIRST Lego League were invited to attend the National finals in Sydney even before the competition concluded in WA. The determination of the team to work on their competition entry and fundraise to get to Sydney was phenomenal. The magnificent seven; Jared P, Jackson B, Joanne W, Beatrice P, Zachary N and Meliq P were accompanied by Ms Duddy and Ms D’Cunha. Macquarie University hosted the event and winning teams from across Australia participated. Our team won the People’s Choice Award for their Project based on designing a Time Management App that could be customised for different types of learning styles. Go Hampton Knights! This was celebrated with a special dinner at a restaurant. With much relief the team was able to relax and enjoy the next day around the Sydney city centre, ending a tiring day at the Starbucks café and a train ride back to the hotel. Robotics The reputation of Hampton’s Specialist ICT program in the use robotics is growing. Ms D’Cunha was invited to present at a conference held at Curtin University, along with Chris Rogers (an international speaker) on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). While other schools may use robots in their curriculum, the opportunities that Hampton provides through its involvement in competitions gives our students the additional life skills of dealing with deadlines, networking, team skills and personal growth. It is this innovative model that other schools heard about on 16 March 2015. Teachers from all education sectors attended. The Certificate II in Digital Media, Information and Technology students use online training tools including virtual PCs to complete their course. Their progress is electronically tracked by our Registered Training Organisation as well as by the teacher. There’s no hiding behind the ‘I left it at home’ excuse or ‘I did it, but forgot to bring it in’. Certificate courses are nationally recognised qualifications and a valuable addition to a student’s portfolio regardless of their future pathway. Year 12 – AIT It’s often said that current legislation does not reflect the needs of our heavily dependent society. Nevertheless, it is important to learn about the current laws if we are to enact changes for improvement. The Year 12 Stage 3 Applied Information Technology syllabus covers the Freedom of Information Act, Intellectual Property, online defamation and Copyright laws. Students created an informational movie series on each of these aspects and did so in a creative way. Bright Sparkz During Term 1 the Bright Sparkz Science program commenced for 2015. Year 6 students from Hampton Park Primary School and Eden Hill Primary School have participated in a ‘hands on’ Science experience in a laboratory setting. The students have experienced practical lesson in Physics and Earth Science, and life in general at Hampton Senior High School. The Bright Sparkz program is an invaluable resource for these primary school students, helping to ignite their interest in Science and make their transition to high school successful. Acknowledgement of Country Congratulations to the following students who performed “Acknowledgement of Country” at their year assemblies12 -Tyrone Riley (he was extremely nervous, yet stood up and showed immense courage to represent his peers who have a deep respect for him for this, as should we all!) 11 - Brianne Yarran 10 - Cezera Critti-Schnaars 9 - Brandon Owen 8 - Devon Orr (was supposed to but had an appointment) Devon and his siblings are Torres Strait Islander 7 - Dylan Johnson. Having our students perform Acknowledgement of Country is a simple way for our school to recognise our pride in our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students- and it also encourages the students to represent their families with pride. Hampton Yarning Follow the dream/Extension Morning Tea What a wonderful start to the year we have had. Hampton held a morning tea for the parent/guardians and students to express to the parents what the school has planned for this year’s students. We started off with introductions of the staff members at the school who are going to be part of all the programs this year. We have many activities that the students can look forward to this year. Congratulations Bailey Derksen (Year 9) and Tyrone Riley (Year 11) have recently competed in the Strive Track and Field State Championships. Bailey competed in the U/15 age group and won gold in high jump, silver in triple jump and bronze in long jump. Tyrone competed in the U/18 age group and won silver in both the 400m and 200m and he was also selected to run in the 200m at the Perth Track Classic with some of the best athletes in the state and country. In mid March they represented WA at the Junior Australian National Athletics championships in Sydney. Bailey finished 13th in the U/15 boys triple jump with a jump of 11.15m which is just short of his personal best. Tyrone finished 2nd in his heat of the U/18 boys 400m in which he VET News WIPT students following pathways to their future Like the Year 7 students many of our Year 11 students felt lost and alone in attending work placements or TAFE placements for the first time to begin 2015. Within a couple of weeks they were all settled and enjoying the different aspects of attending school, work and/or TAFE. We have students completing Pre Apprenticeship in Schools Programs (PAIS) whereby students attend TAFE two days per week to complete a Certificate II in a variety of courses offered. Our students are involved in Automotive, Electro-technology, Carpentry, Engineering, Hairdressing & Child Care through Polytechnic West. Vetis programs offered through Central Institute of Technology include Health Studies and West Coast Institute of ShakishaPerry, Kateisha Saylor, Principal Steve Beaton, Maddison Riley, Rose Hill, Aliesha Adams, Taleesha Mitchell and Ljric Ugle Closing the Gap ran a personal best of 49.80sec to qualify for the final. In the final he ran another personal best of 49.68 sec to finish 5th. Joseph Hinder (student in 2014) won the U/16 boys triple with a jump of 13.84m which was a personal best for him. All the boys have come a long way from the Western Australian All Schools Championships in which they won medals representing the school last November and which subsequently allowed them to qualify for this event. These results reflect the hard work the boys have been putting in to their training over the past six months. Deadly Sista Girls Program We have started the Deadly Sista Girls Program and all the girls are loving being in this class as they are becoming confident within themselves andloving the fact that they are building a strong relationship with all of the other members of the group. They have formed relationship where they came in being friends to becoming family/sisters with each other. Technology offers a Hospitality Course. Our students attend campuses in Joondalup, Midland and Thornlie travelling by public transport. Value adding to this experience our Workplace Industry Training pathway students attend one of these programs or attend both work placement and TAFE. (WIPT) students attending work placement of their choice of industry areas prepares students for future employment gaining both valuable training and experience along with entry points for further study. Our host employers are very supportive of Hampton and provide our students with fantastic training opportunities. On March 19 Hampton SHS celebrated Closing the Gap with a morning tea with staff. On this day our girls helped celebrate by doing the acknowledgment and doing a traditional Noongar Dance for the staff - well done girls we are so proud of you. As part of the Closing the Gap the school has formed a committee with staff members from each learning area. Looking forward to the future.
