Mission Makers
Doubling Efforts to Change Lives:
Brother Bryan Mission
Brother Bryan Mission has purchased a two story building three doors west
of its 2nd Avenue North location that will allow the mission to double its
capacity. “This is a truly momentous development for this special front-line
Mission” explains Brother Bryan Executive Director Tom Zobel, adding
“the space immediately enhances the pivotal New-Life and Recovery programs that we began 16 months ago.” The newly purchased building will
house classrooms, dining, chapel, administrative offices and related support
areas. The entire project (4 phases) is expected to be completed in 2015
depending on how quick designated support arrives. “This is about Brother
Bryan Mission’s commitment to reach and equip lost lives - sons, brothers,
fathers, best friends and neighbors - that became unimaginably mired in
impossible circumstances,” says Zobel. “It’s about the care and support of
donors, mostly individuals and families, stepping up to help a small but
very effective, deeply committed work continue to develop and offer the
best possible opportunity of victory for once-defeated lives.” As a donorsupported Christian ministry, Brother Bryan Mission receives no
government funds. To learn more or help with this project call 470-9399 or
visit www.bbmission.com.
BRINGING OUT THE
WINNER IN YOUR CHILD
John Croyle
Executive Director Big Oak Ranch,
Author of Bringing Out the Winner in Your Child
Make Up Your Mind
One of the questions I get asked
most is, “What was your dad like?”
He was a short guy from upstate
New York who, in many ways, was a
ranch child himself. Because of his
background, one of the things he
told me from the earliest day I can
remember was simply, “You can do
anything if you want to do it bad
enough.” Now that I am a grown
man I do understand there are limitation to that teaching, but the base
premise of the statement is true.
Every addict I have ever talked with
has told me, “I didn’t stop until I
made up my mind I wanted to stop.”
If you stop and think about it, that’s
pretty much the bottom line.
You and I, as parents, have to sometimes make the tough call to change
the direction of our family simply
6 Birmingham Christian Family
because we “made up our mind” we
weren’t going in the wrong direction
anymore. Too many times the easy
road is not the best one. Doing the
right thing, whatever it may be, is
most of the time very hard. You
notice I didn’t say impossible.
As we move into 2013, may you and
I “make up our mind” on whatever
issue or issues we are wrestling with.
Our families and their success
hinges on you and me doing the
right thing no matter what. I repeat
no matter what. Think about it.

Corners of Your Field
Looking for a new way for your congregation to minister to your community? Jimmie Hale Mission is excited to introduce Corners of Your Field, a
new partnership with churches based on the biblical principle found in
Leviticus 23:22, "When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not
reap your field right up to its edge.... You shall leave them for the poor."
Church members can donate gently used items to Jimmie Hale Mission’s
Mission Possible Bargain Centers and receive credit for their church's
benevolence to help someone in need within their community. To find out
more, visit www.getabargain.org.
Donate Your Car & Help Alabama
Children in Need
The United Methodist Children’s Home
(UMCH) is initiating a Donate Your Car
Program to benefit the children they serve.
When you donate a car to UMCH, the
agency receives all of the proceeds from
the sale at auction, which goes directly
back into programs for children and families in Alabama and Northwest Fla.
Driver’s Way is the lead partner in the process: there are no fees or charges for
their assistance, as a result your donation goes 100% back into UMCH to assist
children and families in crisis. Founded in1890, UMCH’s ministries include residential group homes for children and Babies First homes providing young
mothers and their babies with a safe place to live and grow. UMCH also administers foster care and adoption home services as well as family preservation and
support services designed to keep families united whenever possible. These
ministries are available to all in need regardless of religious affiliation. If you are
interested in donating a vehicle to UMCH contact Rich Hodges at Driver’s Way
to initiate the donation, 982-1998 or [email protected]. Driver’s Way will
coordinate the pick-up of a car anywhere in Alabama or you may drive it directly to Driver’s Way in Pelham. At the time of donation, Driver’s Way will receive
the car’s title, and provide the donor with tax forms in return. Learn more
about UMCH at www.umch.net or call 226-7930.

What do science, history, and logic have to say about the reliability of the Bible?

The Message in the Music
Is the music you listen to inspiring and uplifting? Do you
feel closer to God when you listen to Christian music? 22year-old Carrie Sowell does. She says Christian songs even
strengthen her faith. “I can hear Jesus talking to me in the
songs,” she explains. “When I am upset, I can hear Him in
my mind, talking to me through the song. There’s just
something about the words and the music. Christian music
is so powerful and moving. It gets me to a happy place!”

Carrie is a graduate of The Horizons School on Southside, hug, along with an
near Homewood. Celebrating its 20th anniversary, the non- autograph, following
profit school has helped more than 250 students with learn- a concert with her

live happy, productive and independent lives. Graduating in artist, Sandi Patty.
2011, Carrie has her own apartment near the school and works at The Hotel
Highland. “The Horizons School helped me learn how to live independently and be
more assertive. I improved my money management and social skills.”
Carrie’s love of music began when she was small. She listened to country music
first and then moved on to gospel. As she grew older, she started listening to
Christian pop. She sings a little and took voice lessons for a while. But now, she just
enjoys listening to what the artists are trying to say.
Praise and worship teams move Carrie’s soul. She travels around the country
attending Christian conferences and really enjoys the worship teams who lead the
crowds in musical praise and worship. “I went to Indianapolis recently, where
thousands of women gathered for the Women of Faith Conference,” Carrie says.
“These singers and musicians are just so incredibly talented.” Carrie’s favorite artist
is Sandi Patty. She has attended many of this Grammy winner’s concerts and has
even met Sandi, received her autograph and had a picture made with her. “She is
just so gifted, and when I listen to her CD’s, I can’t stay sad for long,” Carrie shares.
“You know, I see young people all the time who just seem so lost,” Carrie adds.
“They have too much drama going on around them, and I want to tell them to
just ‘hang in there.’ You just have to remember not to listen to all of the negative
stuff around you. Instead, be an encouragement to somebody else. They might be
going through some of the same struggles in their life as you have. Be strong. If
you find yourself in a rut, just grab a Christian CD and listen to it. God knows
where you are in your life and He knows this life isn’t always fair or easy.” For more

Wonderstruck
It is elusive, yet everywhere. It comes to us in the most unexpected ways, sometimes shocking us as it blazes a swath
across our heart. It cannot be tamed or generated or contrived. It has been called many things, but words can never
fully capture it. Some call it transcendence. Others call it a
thin place. C.S. Lewis called it sehnsucht. Most of us simply
call it the glory of God. It is that elegantly overpowering
moment in which the nearness of God and His Kingdom
overlap with our world. We’ve all had these moments,
when truth and beauty and love and God Himself press into us, becoming more
real than the tangible world which consumes so much of our attention. It is joy
unspeakable, the abundant life, the weight of glory. It is Jacob’s ladder, a still small
voice, and tongues of fire. It’s a Jesus moment - for God is with us.
Margaret Fienberg’s new book, Wonderstruck: Awaken to the
Nearness of God (Worthy Publishing, $14.99) is an impassioned
appeal for God’s people to live in the joyful expectation that God
may burst through the mundane at any moment. If the whole earth
is full of His glory, then creation itself may be the next stage upon
which the glory of God dances. Heaven and nature really do sing,
just as the carol proclaims. When events both large and small seem to erode our
childlike faith and awe of God, Fienberg encourages us to seek God’s face. If we
search for Him, we will find Him. He has promised as much. As we engage in
prayer, friendship, forgiveness and gratitude, God’s presence becomes more discernible and we become more attuned to the Kingdom of heaven.
My own encounters with the glory of God have been far less dramatic than those
who, like Paul, were smitten by the risen Lord. I have never heard the voice of
God, seen an angel, nor told a lame man to rise in the name of Jesus. But I have
had beautiful and wondrous moments which made me want to reach out my
hands and bless the whole world. I remember the night I asked Lesia to marry
me. God was there. He was also with me the night I told my dying father goodbye. Recently, I held my newborn grandchild in my arms and looked down at her
sweet and lovely face. It was as if I was looking at the face of Jesus. These are
sacred moments, sacraments of time and space and full of glory.
If you have become detached from any sense of the sacred in your life, perhaps
Wonderstruck can reignite your faith and generate a lifestyle of holy anticipation.
May we have eyes to see. May we have ears to hear.

MONEY
Matters
Teaching Your Children Good $$ Values
The book The Financially Intelligent Parent: 8 Steps to Raising Successful, Generous,
Responsible Children, by Eileen and Jon Gallo, focuses on the idea that the way in
which parents spend money sends messages to their children about their values
and priorities. It helps you become more aware of the values communicated to
children through your spending. It provides some great ideas about how to give
children the messages you want them to receive. If you are traveling down this
road, here are a few ideas from the book and the Gallos’ blog:
1
Become a Charitable Family:
Teach your children to be generous through your volunteer
activities. If you do service work individually, talk about what
you are doing and the people for whom you are doing it. If you
can, find opportunities to volunteer as a family. Also, when you get
requests for charitable donations, discuss the goals of each charity,
and have your children help you decide where to give. By introducing the ideas of service and giving, you can teach your children that
they have the power to make life better for others.
2
Encourage Self-Motivation:
On their blog, the Gallos refer to the book, Flow: the Psychology of Optimal
Experience. Its author suggests that internally motivated people are happier
than those who rely on external motivations. As a result, the Gallos suggest that
parents can help their children become happier adults by relying less on external
motivators, like paying children to do chores, more on internal motivations, like
Sponsored by
using chores as a means of helping chilVision Financial Group
dren gain self-respect and take pride in
their work.
3
Develop a Work Ethic:
The primary work of most children is school. It is important
to encourage them to ‘do their best’ as opposed to ‘be the
best.’ In addition to taking responsibility for their school work, children should be
assigned age-appropriate chores, and encouraged to take on part-time employment
when they get older. A good work ethic is learned behavior, and parents are the best
role models.
Your behavior sends clear messages to your children. They learn values by seeing what you spend money on and how you treat others. It’s
important to teach children that money is something they have and
not something they are. Their net worth and their self-worth are
entirely different things.

ight guard, left tackle and finally center: all positions that
Alabama’s Barrett Jones has played and played well. He has the
awards to prove it. His most cherished are the National
Championships he has contributed to followed by the 2012
William V. Campbell Trophy known as the Academic Heisman
and the 2011 Wuerffle Trophy, given to the college football player that best
combines exemplary community service with academic and athletic
achievement. “That was one of my favorite awards because Danny Wuerffle
is a really strong Christian, and I think everyone who has won the award is
a strong Christian. They really live out their faith,” says Jones followed by, “I
really hate to talk about awards.” A final comment from Jones that speaks
volumes about the humility and focus of this young man.
Barrett Jones explains his success in the context of being blessed to learn
from the best. “I really can’t quantify all the lessons they have taught me,”
Brothers and best friends, Harrison and Barrett Jones, team up for the
National Championship game January 7. Next year younger brother and
high school senior Walker Jones will fall in his brothers’ foot steps as the
third Jones brother to play for the Crimson Tide.
16 Birmingham Christian Family
“Barrett Jones is a great player, but long after Bama fans forget about the
blocks he threw, he truly hopes they remember the Christ he followed.
Barrett is steady and consistent, and he makes the most of his opportunities
for the Kingdom.” Gary Cramer, University of Alabama FCA Director
he says of his parents Rex and Leslie who both grew up in Florence, Ala. His
father played basketball at the University of Alabama before moving his
family to Memphis, Tenn. where Jones and his two younger brothers
Harrison and Walker grew up. “I have learned from my mom about serving
others, and my dad is an awesome example of what it means to be a godly
man and a masculine man at the same time. He leads his family as a man of
God,” says Jones. Particularly impactful was his father’s decision to leave
behind a successful car business. “My dad felt God was calling him to do
something else so he actually sold the business and went to work at my
school to raise money there as Director of Advancement. It has been the
greatest move ever,” says Jones. “My dad has been able to spend so much
time with us and be there for us at all of our games.” Jones and his brothers
have all attended Evangelical Christian School in Memphis which he says
helped further develop his foundation of faith. “I had a lot of great teachers
there who taught me a lot about the Bible…I have been very fortunate to
have a lot of great role models,” adds Jones who admits leaving his
Christian school behind and going to the University of Alabama was tough
and a definite faith builder. “I knew zero people when I went to Alabama. It
was very hard at first to meet Christian friends on the team…I went to a
Christian school and had the best experience ever. I had a great family, a
great group of friends, all very like minded. I went to Alabama and certainly those people were out there, but they were harder to find,” remembers
Jones. “That was a big challenge. That’s probably when I grew the most in
my relationship with Christ, because I couldn’t rely on my family and
friends. I had to rely just on God.”
When it comes to living out your faith as a football player, Jones has drawn
on the experiences of players like Danny Wuerffle and Tim Tebow. “I have
watched a lot of Tim’s interviews to learn how to assimilate your faith in an
interview; let people know you are a Christian but at the same time not
being in your face about it,” says Jones. “I hope I can be an example to
younger players who want to share their faith, talk about their faith and be
proud of their faith.” Jones believes in a balance of words and action. “I

He has also organized mission trips to Haiti and
Nicaragua during his last three spring breaks and
taken many of his classmates and team mates with
him. “I love missions, I am very passionate about it.
I think you go looking to give, looking to serve, but
it seems like every time I go on a mission trip I
come back with more than I left with. You learn so
much. You draw so much joy from watching people
come to the Lord and giving to people less fortunate than you,” says Jones who took his first
mission trip in sixth grade to Honduras. “My family took me, and I will never forget that one. There
is really no better vacation to spend with the family
than a mission trip. It is really an awesome experience. It brings you closer together as a family.”
Off the field, Barrett Jones is finishing his masters
after earning a degree in accounting with a 4.0
grade point average. He is the first four-time

football and the 2012 Capital One Academic AllAmerican of the Year.
think it is important to be vocal and tell people
why it is that you act the way you do, and why
you choose to live the way you do… It’s always
important to reinforce your actions with words.”
One of the ways Barrett Jones has chosen to live
out his faith is in service. He has been on the leadership team of Campus Crusade for Christ for the
last four years.
To bolster his faith, Jones commits himself to time
in God’s Word and striving to live it. “You are not
going to be a very effective witness if you are not
trying to build your own faith and work on yourself. I definitely try to focus on my own walk in
addition to helping strengthen other people’s…
Being a Christian is not about just being a good
person and going to church. It’s about having a
relationship with Christ. That’s my main message.”
A message Jones hopes to take into a pro football
career next year and wherever else God takes him.

Point Focus for 2013
The New Year is a great time to examine what we believe and
make sure we are living according to our beliefs. Consider this three point
focus for 2013.
1
God Is Real
2
The Bible is True
We need to demonstrate in our lives
that we believe God is real, that He is
alive and able to impact our world. The
God of the Bible is creator, sustainer,
provider, protector and redeemer. He is
the source of all that is good and from
Him all blessings flow. God is all-powerful, all-knowing and all-present. He is
holy, just, loving and forgiving. God is
perfect, sovereign and at the same time
very personal. God is unique, there is
none like Him. He is God!
Does the Holy Bible, the written word
of God, receive the reverence and respect
it deserves? Do we acknowledge and
accept it as truly “God breathed” and
inspired by God Himself? Do we
acknowledge that the Bible is infallible
and inerrant? Are we reading, believing
and living it? Is it a lamp unto our feet
and a light unto our path? Do we receive
it as a love letter from God, and use it as a
road map to heaven and a textbook on
living?
3
Christ is Savior & Lord
Is the Lordship of Jesus Christ evident by my lifestyle? Have I become a
follower of Christ by denying myself and
dying to the power of sin? Is it apparent
that I have a new life because of Christ?
Does Jesus sit on the throne of my life and
have I yielded control of my life to Him?
God is real, the Bible is true and Jesus
Christ is Savior and Lord! As Christians let
us not only remember these three points
but live them in 2013 and beyond.

Delivering Hope to the Hurting: Gateway
Since 1891, when Gateway was known as The Mercy Home, they have remained
“dedicated to transforming the lives of families in crisis and delivering hope to
the hurting.” As Birmingham’s oldest social service agency, Gateway provides children and families in Jefferson and Shelby counties with counseling, education
and foster care.
One of their programs focuses on in-home counseling for families that are in danger of being separated. Jennifer Lackey, Gateway’s director of Therapeutic Foster
Care (TFC), says that, through the preventative counseling, “We try to keep families together.” Gateway provides these services based on each family’s income,
which makes the counseling attainable to everyone. However, when families cannot stay together, Gateway assists children with foster care. Currently, more than
5,000 children in Alabama are in foster care, and many more are waiting to be
placed in homes.
return to the foster parents many years later and thank the families
for taking them into their homes.
When children and teenagers are not placed in foster homes, they often live in
group settings instead. Other times, when local families are not available, the children are placed in counties that are far from home, which makes it difficult to visit
relatives and friends. According to Lackey, there is a huge need for foster families
particularly in Shelby County and families willing to take a teenager into foster care.
Prospective Gateway foster parents should be at least 25 years old and live in or near
Shelby or Jefferson County. Gateway places children in single-parent homes as well
as with married couples. For more information contact Jennifer Lackey at 510-2722
or visit www.Gway.org.
—Jennifer Rainy
Gateway provides Therapeutic Foster Care for abused and neglected children. TFC
is a specialized form of foster care because it is geared toward children who require
more attention. Lackey says, “A lot of (the children) are struggling with mental
health issues, including post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, anxiety, and acting out in school.”

Since the children in TFC need more attention, only one child is placed in each
home, except in cases where siblings are placed together. The prospective foster parents take a 10-week comprehensive course that educates them and helps them to
decide if TFC is right for their family. Lackey says, “We have had some foster parents
for more than twelve years. It is part of their ministry and faith. But the reward you
get from it, you may not see it right away.” She said that sometimes the children will

The Answer to “Why?”
The media swarm focused on the data first — the who, what,
when and where questions. Then came the question, "Why?" The
same inescapable question arises every time a Columbine or Sandy
Hook type event happens. How could such a thing happen? How
Matt Wilson could a human being do such a thing? The easy answers are never
satisfying, and they are often based on a confused morality or popExecutive
ular culture. We assume there must have been a political
Director,
First Priority motivation, a mental problem or some social pressure. An analysis
is offered and sometimes some horrifying clues emerge, but the
madness of mass homicide can never be truly explained. As Christians we are called
to approach situations like this from a biblical worldview.
The Evil As Christians we know that the human heart is capable of great evil.
Human history includes great human atrocities. The 20th century included a list of
names such as Adolf Hitler, Josef Stalin and Charles Manson. Human beings are
capable of unspeakable moral evil. We are shocked by such atrocities, but only
because we have some distance from the last one. When humans commit grotesque
moral evil, it tells us the truth about the nature of human sin.
The Restraint We must be thankful for restraints on evil. Christians must not
underestimate the potential of any human being — ourselves included. We know
ourselves to be sinners and capable of sins we do not actually commit. Why do we
not commit them? Simply put, God restrains human sinfulness. If the fullness of
human sin was set loose, humanity would destroy itself. God restrains human evil
by several means. At the foundation of these restraints is the fear of God, which,
even in an increasingly secular society, still retains a more powerful force than is
often acknowledged.
The Cross We must admit that there will be no satisfying answers to these questions in this life. Christians know that God is in control and nothing is outside of
Him. We also know that He allows evil to exist, and humans commit evil crimes.
We are reminded that the evil in this world can only be answered by the cross.
So, as we sit here weeks later after the tragedy in Newtown, Conn., we must grieve
with those who grieve. Pray for Christians in the Connecticut area ministering in
this tough time. Pray for our nation and communities. Pray God will guard ourselves from evil — especially our own evil. And we must point to the cross. What
other answer can we give?

Prosper & Live Healthy in 2013
One of my very favorite Scripture verses is 3rd John 1:2,
“Beloved, I pray above all things that thou may prosper and
be in health, even as your soul prospers.” It is God’s desire
for you and me to prosper and be in health.
Called to Prosperity Some people struggle with the idea of
prosperity. Some say it is a “name it and claim it” message.
Others say a rich man/woman cannot even enter into
heaven because they are living a prosperous life. Don’t limit God and how He
wants to prosper you! Don’t limit your prosperity to wealth and material
things. The word prosper means “a good way, a road, to travel well, a good
journey.” If life is a journey, then there must be a destination. As Christians,
our destination is Heaven and God wants us to travel well on our journey to
heaven. He wants us to be successful as we travel through this life. I pray that
you and I, above all things, have success on our road of life and when we have
success that we give God all the glory and honor. Where God guides, God
Provides. You and I are called to walk in this prosperity. Don’t just talk about
it to your friends and loved ones. Start walking in it!
Diana at Hair 280
A new look does not have
to be extreme!
Called to Health Health means hygiene, to be wholesome, to be whole. In 3rd
John we are called to prosper and be in health. Why would John start talking
about the body in these verses? Because the body is the temple of the Hoy Ghost.
God wants us to prosper and live in a healthy body. We are to protect our bodies
so we can do the assignment that God has called us to do. You and I must take
the time to be alone with God. He wants to heal and refresh us. God wants us
well so we can teach His Word, preach the gospel and sing His songs. We must

Healthy LIVING
Begin 2013 Mindful of Your Health
By making a commitment to yourself to be more mindful of your health,
you will find that you will feel better, your attitude will improve, your
sleeping patterns will make a turn for the better, and your waist line will
shrink. And as you focus on living healthier, don’t forget to take time out
of your busy schedule to visit your doctor. An annual physical is a
great way to get on a path to better health. Every year, women
should see their gynecologist for a breast exam and a pap smear. If
you turn 35 this year you need a baseline mammogram. At 40,
you should get a mammogram every year. If you turn 50 you
need to schedule a bone density and a colonoscopy. The
physicians of Henderson & Walton are here for you six days
a week in seven offices in metro Birmingham. Give us a

Cornerstone Kids Shine the Light
Join Cornerstone: Be A Light in the City
Respectful, knowledgeable, and eager to learn may not be the first words that
come to mind when you think of inner city children. But, if you ask volunteer
outreach minister, Justin Arrington, these are the exact attributes he uses to
describe the character of the students attending Cornerstone School.
The mission and work of Cornerstone continues through the support of its many
friends and partners. We invite you to prayerfully consider sponsoring the education of Children by giving through the Partner Scholarship Program.
Arrington volunteers as a part of the 3rd Saturday Outreach Program, a ministry
started by Church of the Highlands designed to reach out to the community
through ministry and acts of service. While ministering with the program in
Woodlawn, Arrington noticed that a handful of kids really stood out from the rest.
As Arrington began asking these children what school they attended, the answer
was the same for each of them, Cornerstone School. “Before we knew the kids
went to Cornerstone, we could tell a difference in the respect they showed, versus
other kids [from different schools],” says Arrington. He was so impressed with
Cornerstone’s students that he decided to visit the school and find out first-hand
what Cornerstone was doing differently from everyone else. What Arrington
found was that Cornerstone places high value in teaching to both the head and the
heart, instilling not only academic principles but also focusing on character development. “Our group was discussing ways to break the cycle of hopelessness and
poverty in Woodlawn. How to change the future of our neighborhood in addition
to the current issues we were ministering to. With Cornerstone offering the education and spiritual/personal growth that will actually foster that change, we thought
it best to pour into an organization already achieving those goals.” Arrington put
his teachings into action by becoming a member of Cornerstone’s Junior Board
and an advocate for Cornerstone School. As you set your goals for 2013, consider
joining Justin Arrington in helping shine the “light” in our city.

Northwestern Mutual’s
Adam Rhoades
Adam Rhoades is making a difference
in Birmingham by investing his time Adam Rhoades and wife
and efforts into helping those in need. Heather with their children
Christian, Julia and Sebastian.
From his family to his business,
Rhoades looks to his faith in God for guidance. “My faith is central to
who I am and who we are as a family,” he said. Since taking over the position of Managing Partner of Northwestern Mutual of Alabama in 2010,
Rhoades has continued to strive to help the community through both
business and philanthropy, directly working with, and also sponsoring a
number of worthwhile events that benefit the greater Birmingham community. Earlier this year, Rhoades led Northwestern Mutual of Alabama’s
sponsorship of The Exceptional Foundation’s Annual Chili Cook-Off and
this past October, the Northwestern Mutual of Alabama Twilight Golf
Classic. Now in its second year, the Classic benefits The Foundation
Fighting Blindness, an organization working to eliminate common causes
of blindness in children. Additionally, in his personal and professional life
Rhoades works with a number of benevolent organizations including
Mitchell’s Place, Children’s of Alabama, Alter 84 and The Boys and Girls
Club. Reflecting on how his faith impacts his charitable work, Rhoades
said, “We are honored to be able to work with so many groups that do
such important work. We are blessed to be able to contribute and we are
always happy whenever we have the opportunity to give back to the community.” January 2nd Rhoades will speak at the 2013 BBVA Compass
Bowl Prayer Breakfast benefitting the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
“We [Northwestern Mutual] are privileged to be part of this event and to
be able to share a moment of reflection with our friends and neighbors,
and so many of the bright, up-and-coming members of the Fellowship,”
he said. “Additionally, we are honored to have legendary former linebacker for The University of Alabama and the Green Bay Packers, Rich
Wingo as the keynote speaker this year. Rich is a true football legend,”
said Adam, “and his devotion to his faith is an inspiration to us all.” The
FCA Breakfast will be held in the Ballroom of the Sheraton Birmingham

Cheddar Pecan Scones
A delicious treat for breakfast served
with jam or butter. Serves 12.
Ingredients
2 1/2 cups self-rising flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon dry mustard
Pinch cayenne pepper
1/4 cup unsalted butter
1 cup grated sharp cheddar cheese
1 cup buttermilk, plus additional for brushing
the top of scones
1/2 cup chopped pecans
Directions
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. In a large bowl whisk together the flour, baking powder, dry mustard, and cayenne pepper. Blend in the butter with a
pastry blender until the mixture resembles coarse meal. Stir in the cheese, buttermilk, and pecans to make a soft dough. Turn out the dough on a
lightly floured surface. Gently knead 3 or 4 times. Divide the
dough in 3 parts and pat each part into a 6-inch circle. Cut each
circle into 6 triangles. Transfer to a buttered cookie sheet and
brush the tops with buttermilk. Bake 16 to 18 minutes, until
golden brown. Remove the scones to a cooling rack. Serve warm.
Note: These may be cut out with a 3-inch cookie cutter if you
prefer a smaller scone.
