The turning of the leaves leads us into the up coming fall activities and the holiday season when we all enjoy spending time with family and friends. Our club still has 3 more gatherings this year. The Chili Cook off on October 14th, Our Fall Tour on October 28th and the Annual Meeting/Holiday Party on December 8th. Please look further in this issue for more details about each, and plan to attend all of these annual activities. Thank you to all who have participated this year at our activities, tours and meetings. Participation is what makes our club. It takes the effort, cooperation and participation of a great many people to make our club run as smoothly as it does. Our annual election is again underway, and we have a fine slate of eager folks to choose from. This is your opportunity to choose the crew that will lead us through the coming year. Please follow the instructions on your ballots and view the profiles of our candidates in the bio pages that were sent with them. If there are any questions that you may have regarding the election, please contact Kathy Groerich for clarification. In closing, as this is the final Occasional of 2012, I would like to wish you all a joyous holiday season and a safe and healthy 2013! Enjoy the Journey, Ron Olson P.S. Rumor has it that a local Model T Club family has recently acquired their first Model T. Hopefully, their 1915 Depot Hack will make an appearance at one of our year end events. Each issue will test your knowledge on all things Model T! Dear Editor, I am submitting a Mystery Photo that was taken around Christmas time. In the photo is a detailed Christmas window display at the Rivard Brothers Ford Showroom. The Rivard Brothers Ford dealership was in Warren, MI and was open for over 40 years. Can your readers tell me what year the photo was taken and anything specific about the vehicle featured in the window display? Sincerely, Jacob Marley Dickens, IL. Happy Holidays Mystery Photo readers... Can you answer Mr. Marley’s questions? Send submissions to: [email protected] Or T Mystery 350 Afshari Dr. Florissant, MO 63034 N o v e m b e r / D e c e m b e r 2 0 1 2 Mystery Photo #4 Answers Dear Editor, I am Shipshape Clemmons, Seaworthy’s older brother. My brother is a nuts & bolts man, and does not understand the relationship between a man and a Model T. Our families fished Blue Shelled Crab in Chesapeake Bay for over 200 years. When the Blue Shelled Crab were fished-out, the families then moved to St. Louis. After an over 30-year ban, crabbin’ was again allowed in the bay, but we are now too old for crabbin’. My brother Seaworthy calculated the cost of labor and parts at 1929 prices, and determined that it would cost 70%more to repair the old T than to buy a new model A. I, Shipshape, had to explain the reasons why. It was the love and emotional attachment he cared about; money was not a factor, he didn’t care. He just wants his car back the way it was. I, Shipshape, understand that Boston owner. Seaworthy never will. Shipshape Clemmons St. Louis, MO Dear Editor, Regarding the Mystery Photo in the September-Oktober issue of the Occasional, here are a few thoughts. Seaworhty Clemmons must have been sea-sick when he identified the subject vehicle a 1926! It appears to be a 1924 or a 1925. Also, all of the other vehicles in the picture are 1925 or older. There are no 26-27 Model T’s nor any Model A’s in the photo. It would be helpful to know how Mr. Clemmons dated this photo to 1929. The damages to the car are not as serious as they may appear at first glance. Mr. Clemmons should keep in mind that parts for these cars were not particularly expensive back in the 1920’s. I don’t believe that the top is harmed. It just is in disarray due to the bent windshield post, and the side curtains are hanging down. I have listed belo0w the parts that might be required to repair the car. The prices are from Ford’s Price List of Parts, Model T, dated 05, August, 1928: Part No. 2800E 4801C 4803F 4313 4815C 6511HX 7838RX G-1-B G-2-B Item Price Front Wheel, Demountable, less Rim & Hub Front Fender, Left, 1917-1925 Rear Fender, Left, 1917-1925 Running Board, Left, 1909-1925 Running Board Shield, Left, 1917-1925 Head Lamp Assy., Right or Left Bracket, Windshield Assy., Left, 1922-1925 Glass, Windshield, Lower, 1922-1925 Glass, Windshield, Upper, 1922-1925 Total $3.50 $4.00 $4.00 $1.25 $2.40 $2.75 Or $5.50 for pair $0.65 $2.35 $2.25 $23.15 The above list is a worst case scenario, assuming that all of the above parts needed to be replaced. In all probability, some of the original parts could be straightened and reused. I would guess that there would probably not be more than four or five hours labor involved, most likely at the rate of 50 or 75 cents an hour. Also, remember, at this time, all Fords were black, as would be any replacement parts, or any used parts they may have used. Therefore there would be little if any paint work involved in the repair. I did not include replacing the tire as I did not have any period tire price lists handy, and possibly it could have been patched. Using the information that I have set forth above, I conclude that it would have been feasible to repair the vehicle. Besides, who in their right mind would want to drive a Model A?! My first was our 1973 Mustang. My next was a 1965 Chevy Impala Convertible, it was the only car that I have sold. When in college I purchased the ‘63 Buick and the ‘69 Cadillac. The ‘78 Mk V was our everyday driver for years, until recently when it was tucked away in storage. In the past 5 years we have added the ‘40 Cadillac and the ‘15 Depot Hack to our families collection. After graduation I worked for the private collection at Hunter Engineering for 7 years and then began my own auto restoration business in 2001. My wife Shannon and I have been married for almost 15 years and have been blessed with our two children (Alex 12 and Lily 9)who keep us very busy. I grew up in the antique car hobby, with my parents being long time members of the Model T Club. We are glad that our children are now showing an interest in the hobby too, making them the 3rd generation in our family to carry on the tradition of the antique car hobby.” Hobbies: “We “ enjoy being active in many local car clubs. Both Shannon and I have sat on, or are currently sitting on a few of the local boards in the Model T Club, Horseless Carriage Club, Packard Club, and Classic Car Club. When I am not participating in the car hobby, I enjoy playing in a pool league, working in our garden, playing golf and spending time with the family watching movies. Shannon volunteers with Share Pregnancy & Infant Loss Support Inc. as a grief counselor, when she is not planning activities for the Classic Car Club or editing the Model T Occasional or the Classic Car Club Spark Plug.” 8 T h e O c c a s i o n a l N o v e m b e r / D e c e m b e r 2 0 1 2 Model T Ford Club of America 48th Annual Business Meeting • Dallas, TX March 22-24, 2013 Hosted by the DFW Chapter MTFCA (aka Lone Star T's) Guests will be staying at Double Tree by Hilton, Dallas at the special rate of $109.00 + tax.
