OF THE COLON.
If detected early, the cure rate for colorectal cancer is very high.
It can be as high as 75%.
Because we now know how to detect it early. And we know how to
fight it once we detect it.
There are three simple checkup guidelines for men and women
without symptoms.
One, get a digital exam every year. This is recommended for
everyone over 40.
Two, get a stool blood test every year if you are over 50.
Three, after two initial negative tests one year apart, get a procto
exam every three to five years if you are over 50.
These guidelines are the best protection against colorectal cancer
you can have.
If you're not over 50, please give this information to friends and loved ones who are.

The Educational Event Laboratory
Professionals Have Been
Waiting For All Year!
T
his October, the most exciting educational event of the
year in laboratory medicine takes place in New Orleans, Louisiana: the 1987 ASCP/CAP Fall Meeting and
Exhibits. This seven-day conference is your opportunity
to meet with colleagues, exchange information, and keep
up-to-date on the latest developments in your profession.
These are some of the programs scheduled throughout the
week:
ASCP Workshops and Seminars
The ASCP Commission on Continuing Education has
arranged a fall schedule of stimulating workshops, including 64 programs in anatomic pathology and 63 programs in clinical pathology. Each program was developed
to build on your expertise and improve your individual
strengths. All workshops provide a manual that can be
used as a permanent reference, and many workshops include 35-mm or glass slides.
As you register for multiple workshops, you save money!
The cost per workshop declines as the number you attend
increases. If you have not yet registered, you can sign up
for open workshops on site in New Orleans.
The Technical Exhibits
This is an outstanding opportunity to meet with over
150 exhibitors ready to become part of your laboratory's
support team. Representatives from each company will be
on hand to demonstrate and discuss their products and
services. The exhibit hall at the New Orleans Convention
Center will be open Monday, October 26, through Wednesday, October 28, from 9:30 am to 2:30 pm. The exhibits
will also be open Monday night, October 26, from 5:00 to
7:00 pm. This issue of Laboratory Medicine contains a special guide to help you plan your visits to the Exhibits.
Anatomic Pathology Slide Seminar
The fall AP Slide Seminar, "Tumors of the Breast," is
devoted to the pathologist's role in the diagnosis and management of breast disease. A series of 20 cases has been
chosen to cover a broad spectrum of common and uncommon lesions. The educational materials included with the
registration fee—case histories, microscope slides, and
published proceedings—will serve as a valuable reference
for years to come. The seminar begins Thursday, October
29, from 1:30 pm to 5:00 pm, and continues on Friday,
October 30, from 8:30 am to noon.
Symposia
Three symposia will be presented at the Fall Meeting:
"Controversies in Anatomic Pathology," "The Role of the

Laboratory in Monitoring Anticoagulant Therapy," and
"SI Units and the Clinical Laboratory: What Are They
and How Do We Go About Doing It?" There will also be
a free Basic Science Research Symposium presented by
the ASCP/CAP/APC: "Thrombosis—Nontraditional Concepts."
Special Workshops for Technologists
Along with over 70 workshops open to technologists,
five workshops will offer scientific and management information of special interest to technologists.
International Society of Dermatopathology Symposium
The ASCP is pleased to share its meeting with the annual symposium of the International Society of Dermatopathology. This year's topic is "Histologic Diagnosis by
Pattern Analysis of Cutaneous Adnexal Neoplasms and
Cysts." The symposium is scheduled for Saturday, October
24, 9:00 am to 4:30 pm.
Conference for Residency Program Directors
The Tenth Conference for Residency Program Directors,
sponsored by the ASCP/CAP/APC Conjoint Committee for
Pathology Residency Program Director Conferences, takes
place on Sunday, October 25. The subject this fall is "Content of Pathology Residency Training: Filling the Cookie
Jar."
Scientific Presentation of Papers and Posters
More than 100 scientific posters will present current
research from MDs, PhDs, and MTs in the field. Poster
sessions are scheduled for Monday, October 26, through
Wednesday, October 28, 9:30 am to 2:30 pm.
In addition, residents will compete for the Pathology
Resident Award in both anatomic and clinical pathology.
Proffered papers will be presented on Tuesday, October
27, 8:30 to 11:00 am.

The ASCP Educational Resource Center has the latest
information on all the educational products and services
the ASCP has to offer: textbooks, manuals, color plate

Whatever the instrumentation,
size of laboratory or the clinical chemistry need, Sigma
Diagnostics can be counted on
to satisfy it. Sigma makes reagents that interface with virtually all clinical batch and random access analyzers. Over
1400 choices available ... and
combine this with Sigma's Lipid
reagent technology ... offering
4 products with high technology, dry blend, single vial formulations.
For serum triglyceride measurement, Sigma provides two
reagents - Triglyceride [INT]
and Triglyceride (GPO-Trinder]. These reagents can be
used with the advanced enzymatic/colorimetric techniques
for measuring serum triglyceride. Both techniques utilize
a highly purified lipoprotein lipase providing one of the most
accurate methods for triglyceride measurement. The expanded range of reaction of
these reagents permits measuring high triglyceride levels
without dilution and reassay.
Both triglyceride reagents are
unusually stable after reconstitution.
For Total and HDL
Cholesterol measurement — a reagent with
a high degree of specificity. The assay
involves the use of
a special mixture
of cholesterol
esterase and oxidase. Use of
those enzymes marks a major
breakthrough in cholesterol
analysis. By combining their action with peroxidase, the specificity can be linked with the
simplicity of a colorimetric
reaction. The reconstituted
cholesterol reagent is very
stable and the assay system
can be used to measure levels
over a wide range of concentration. Triglyceride
