FOR THE LATEST EVENTS: See our new Google Calendar which you can download to your computer or mobile device! http:// www.delasallenorth.org/ about-us/calendar/ The world is diminished with the passing of Nelson Mandela, a man who showed us the unwavering strength of the human spirit. For his work on behalf of the African National Congress, he was jailed for 27 years. Upon his release in 1990 and election as President, he worked not only to abolish Apartheid but to unify South Africa and establish a democratic government. In 1994, he received the Nobel Peace Prize. This, too . . . the world is enriched because of his life. Aphorisms aside, a study of his life reveals a man who lived out his deeply held principles, regardless of cost to his own personal freedom. He was able to withstand imprisonment and deprivation for nearly three decades and yet emerge with vigor, humor, and forgiveness. There are great lessons in his life for each of us . . . an inspiration for our Advent preparations. In this season of preparing the way for Emmanuel – God is with us – Mandela’s life reminds us of what we can do to change both ourselves and our community. It is the work I witness every day in the hallways, classrooms, and offices of De La Salle, where educators are inspired by the teachings of St. John Baptist de La Salle, to cherish and love the students entrusted to our care. Many times life does not play out according to the platitudes of a Hallmark card. Rather, our living together in a community can sometimes be challenging; but our common humanity, lived out within our Christian narrative, calls us to forgive, to seek reconciliation and thereby find the redemption we all so desperately seek. In this Advent season, and through the coming Christmastide, I wish you each and all a joyous celebration of family and faith. Tim Joy Principal 2 Knightly Informer December 2013 De La Salle Students Participate in Teach Africa Youth Forum Some of the Black Heritage Team Leads (Lyric Branch, Taryn Wack, Dedriana Tims, Jasmyne Gaston, Khadija Bruce, Ghermanie Allen & Gabby Allen) participated in the World Affairs Council’s Teach Africa Youth Forum on December 2nd. Students spent the day participating in a variety of workshops from West African dance, to understanding poverty to examining the African roots of hip hop. The goal of the conference was to educate – to undo stereotypes & myths, and spread the word about this truly great and diverse continent. Students will incorporate the information they learned in our Black Heritage Month celebration in February.
