February 2015
From the Administrator
We knew that January would be a busy month for our organization, and this
was certainly the case.
First of all, I want to thank everyone who played a part in the successful
launch of our new Home Plus in Hutchinson. The open houses throughout the
weekend were a major success!
Home Plus is a specific licensure category in the State of Kansas, and we are
excited to offer another choice for senior consumers. In addition to providing
services for seniors who choose to live there, we will also be licensed for Adult
Day Care services, where individuals would join us there for a part of their day.
This location also includes a satellite office for our Home Health agency to
work from, as our customer base in Reno County grows. We chose to build in
the Hutchinson area because many of our
residents are from Reno County and this
will be a beautiful, rural setting with all the
care and amenities, for those who wish to
stay in their familiar community.
Please feel welcome to stop by the new
location at 2500 Pleasant Hills Parkway
(just off of Halstead Street), and say “Hi” to
our Operator Alicia Koenigs and her great

February Is American Heart Month: Are You at
Risk for Heart Disease?
During the month of February, Americans see the human
heart as the symbol of love. February is American Heart
Month, a time to show yourself the love. Learn about your
risks for heart disease and stroke and stay "heart healthy"
for yourself and your loved ones.
Cardiovascular disease (CVD)—including heart disease,
stroke, and high blood pressure—is the number 1 killer of
As you begin your journey to better heart health that can last a lifetime,
keep these things in mind:

Try not to become overwhelmed. Every step brings you closer to a healthier heart, and every healthy
choice makes a difference!

Partner up. The journey is more fun—and often more successful—when you have company. Ask friends
and family to join you.

Don't get discouraged. You may not be able to take all of the steps at one time. Get a good night's
sleep—also important for a healthy heart—and do what you can tomorrow.

Reward yourself. Find fun things to do to decrease your stress. Round up some colleagues for a
lunchtime walk, join a singing group, or have a healthy dinner with your family or friends.
women and men in the United States. It is a leading cause
of disability, preventing Americans from working and enjoying family activities.1 CVD costs the United States over
$300 billion each year, including the cost of health care
services, medications, and lost productivity.
Take It One Step at a Time
You can control a number of risk factors for CVD, including:

On the weekend of January 23, 24, 25 God blessed us with wonderful weather for our
Open Houses at our Pleasant Hills facility. About 500 people were able to see our new

we had some of the veterans from Hutchinson ride in on their motorcycles and raise the

Estates Activities
Happy February everyone! One month closer to Spring!
January we added a couple new things for the estates & EVV.
Chaplin Dave has started a Bible Study on Friday mornings at 11:00am
lasting around 30 minutes, with music, singing and Bible reading. Physical Therapy has been doing a program of some kind third Friday each
month. February will be “Cookie Decorating” in PH III.
You will notice a change in the Library. It has grown from one
area to two areas! All books, other than fiction, were moved to PH III.
Christian Fiction, General Fiction, DVD’s, & Videos are in PH I. Some
fiction authors are writing continuous stories in three or more books. To
help you know which books are a series and the order they are written in,
the books have a number on the spine with a colored label over it so you
know which series belongs together. When you check out a book and
DVD”S, remove the card from the back, sign and date it and place in the
check-out card holder. When you return books, videos or DVD’s please
place in the red basket. PLEASE DO NOT PUT BACK ON SHELF!
Both areas have a check-out box & red basket for returns. We hope you
enjoy the Library as there are some great books for you to enjoy.
If you have any DVD’s that you are no longer interested in
keeping, we would love them for our Library for the residents to
enjoy.
We are planning a Super Bowl Party on February 1st, bring a
snack and a couple of dollars for the rest of the food & drinks. Lets have
a great time!
Two bus trips are planned, Thursday, Feb. 5th & Sat., Feb. 21st.
For this month’s Estates Program (Feb. 10th) we will have the
pleasure of listening to a group from Pretty Prairie. “Sound Foundation”
with Stan Stucky, Rod Krebhiel, Sid Graber & Stan Graber.
With Valentines' day coming up we will decorate valentines on
Feb. 3rd in PH I.

The Magic in a Simple Touch
Health Benefits
Several research studies have identified
physical benefits to touch, including lowering blood pressure, decreasing pain,
improving mood, and decreasing stressrelated cortisol and heart rates.
Calms Behaviors
Touch can also benefit people with dementia by calming them. One study which

music libraries. If you know of any
special music or certain songs your
loved one enjoys, please let us know
so we can add it to our library of
music. As we continue on this
musical journey with our residents,
we want to learn as much as we can
about the music and songs they have
enjoyed in their life in hopes to help
them relive some of those special
memories. If you would like to help
be a part of this wonderful program,
we are in need of gently used or new
ipods donation, head phones (that go
over ears, not in them), i-tune gift
cards and volunteers. We also would
love for families to let us know what
music your loved one has enjoyed.

You must always be mindful of how you
approach an individual….expecially
someone with dementia. But appropriate
touch done in an appropriate manor can
mean the world to an individual in need.

Happy Valentine’s Day to our Friends and Families! Just a few “throwback” pictures from our New Year’s Day party. We always have a great
time and this year was no exception!
Our ladies made a yummy new recipe this month, chocolate chip meringue cookies and they turned out so very good! If you get hungry,
come to Cottonwood and you might
smell cookies or bread on any given
day! On this picture to the right, Betty
and another gal are visiting while eating
at “Skoops” in Hesston. They are sitting
under the front end of a car and were
hoping that it wouldn’t fall down while
they ate! It is a really fun place to eat.

WALNUT COURT
February 2015
The New Year is already speeding up. Walnut
court has had a very busy month with welcoming new people and celebrating birthdays.
We would like to send a warm welcome to our
new House hold leader Cindy Kahns.
January 1st we celebrated Margaret’s birthday
by making her a cake and decorating it. The
residents also enjoyed making home made peanut butter cookies. We have taken two trips to
the Mouse Lodge this month to go play some
bingo and have a nice lunch.
Walnut Court would like to send prayers to Sally Wiens family as we will miss her dearly.
With Super Bowl Sunday we will have all fun
snacks and essentials to watch our favorite
teams play. And don’t forget about valentines
day right around the corner. Be sure to send
your loved ones a Valentines day card to remind
them how much you care!

Here comes my favorite month, and my last month. I am
sad to tell you all that my last day will be February 13th. I
have been so glad to be a part of your loved ones lives for
the past 15 years. I hope that you can come to a goodbye
party with me and our elders on that morning at 10 am.
We have planned that same day our Annual Sweetheart
lunch, so you spouses should be getting your invitations in
the mail shortly!! We hope to see you there! We also have
2 outings scheduled at the end of the month.
This past month we had fun with our monthly theme trivia
and our bingo. We welcomed back a past friend Glennia
Fuller, and said goodbye to a friend Carletta Nulf. She
will by missed! We also welcomed in 2015 with a Happy

Yes that is a
car over Juanita
and Betty’s head!
We ended 2014
with a trip
to Scoops
in Hesston. They had lots of
50’s mementoes to see. It’s a
fun place to eat a hamburger
and shake, rattle and role!
Bringing in 2015 we celebrated
a special 102nd birthday with
our friend Grace. It has been
my privilege to have known this
wonderful lady. Thank you
Shirley for sharing your mother
with us!
We went bowling at the
McPherson Starlight Lanes on
the 16th and we had a really good time. Here is a picture of Susan and
Ron. I wish I could put a video on this newsletter of Ron doing his
dance after his strikes. And I have to say he did his special dance more
than once. He was the winner with the most points! Awesome job!
Thelma and daughter
Vickie went to Hobby
Lobby and out for lunch on
the 27th. Thelma really
likes that store. She did
some serious shopping and it
was fun to see all the goodies she got. Not to mention
the wonderful time Mother
and Daughter had together.
You might recognize
the name Todd Oliver
with his talking dog
Irving from the show
America’s Got Talent or the David Letterman show or even Jay Leno ‘s show. Well
Todd and his Friends are hilarious! Susan
and I went with Cottonwood to his show and
we laughed till we cried! It is a must see! Susan and Liz got to take a
picture with these famous good looking fellas!
On a sad but happy note our friend Ed has recently finished his
good fight and went to be with our Savior. We will miss him so much
but we know he is now reunited with his beloved wife Billy.
Till we meet again, everyone have a Happy Valentines Day and stay
safe!
