Pleasant News
April 2015
From the Administrator
One of the blessings of working in long term care is that, one is working
with individuals who care about others. This was evident, once again, just this
week, when the Employee Committee held a garage sale with the proceeds going to a new fund for providing help to staff who have a significant or unexpected need or emergency. This was the first fund raiser for this cause and it
raised over $500. We congratulate Jen Cox the Employee Committee chair, and
her committee, as well as the generous folks who donated to this meaningful
cause.
Our Music and Memory project has really touched the hearts of our staff and
residents. We have had some of our families step forward with generosity to
this cause as well. For example, we thank the family of Lillie Ann Neufeldt for
remembering this project with memorials, as well as the family of Grace Sloan
who is doing the same. We appreciate the support.
It’s that time of year again, when we think about spring storms. Our residents and staff completed the annual tornado drill evacuation and we are excited
to report that it was completed in record breaking time. A big thank you to everyone who participated and it is good to

Estates Happenings
Happy Spring (at least I hope it is just around the corner.) Our community
is a great place to enjoy your friends without having to worry about what the
temperature and weather is doing. If this type of lifestyle is attractive to you,
call me and let me show you your new home.
New residents that have recently settled in with us are Shirley and Don in
apartment #4, Ralph in apartment #34 and Loma in #44. Shirley and Don come
from the Buhler area and Ralph and Loma both come from Texas. Maybe
things aren’t always better in Texas  Hope you are able to enjoy the spring time and please let me know where I
can help you and your family with upcoming plans.

5 Foods to Avoid at the Salad Bar
By: Taryn Winter Brill, Everyday Health Writer
Croutons - They may be small, but they’re typically filled with artificial
colors, flavors and preservatives. The majority of croutons found in restaurants are also made of refined grains, which means all of the vitamins
and protein have been stripped from them. Adding croutons also means
adding calories, so opt for a slice of whole wheat bread or a whole wheat
roll instead.
Sun-dried tomatoes - What you’re really adding to your salad is a ton
of sodium. A half-cup can set you back almost 500 milligrams of sodium. Opt for fresh tomatoes instead.
Candied nuts -They’re often scattered on top of a salad with beets or
blue cheese. And they taste so good—because they’re drenched in simple sugars! Candied nuts are also filled with fat, sodium, artificial colors
and flavors. So stick to unsalted, plain nuts like walnuts or almonds that
contain healthy fats and will keep you full longer.
Tortilla strips or wonton noodles –Sure, they add great crunch to your
salad, but they also add extra calories, sodium and trans fats (they’re often fried in oil). Instead, go for peppers or carrots for a tasty crunch
without all those calories and fat.
Shredded cheese -A sprinkle of cheese won’t hurt you, but many people
throw on at least a half-cup, which can add up to a substantial number of
calories. One cup of cheddar cheese has more calories and fat than a
large serving of fries from McDonald’s! If you’re choosing cheese, pick
a low-fat cheese and limit the portion size to the size of your thumb.

Chaplain’s Corner
A word of introduction: I am one of the new staff members at Pleasant View
Home, beginning my ministry at PVH early in December 2014. I was raised on
a small dairy farm in SW Ohio, studied agriculture (dairy science) at Ohio State
University – long ago, and came to a saving knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ
through an individual’s witness while a student there (be impressed with the
power of a witness – Acts 1:8). Later, I did graduate work at the University of
Illinois, also in the field of dairy science; but God had another plan for me, introducing me to the ministry of the Navigators, who God used to disciple me (2
Timothy 2:2) and redirect me to fulltime ministry. I did my theological studies
at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, Deerfield, Illinois, and served as pastor
at a Baptist church in Michigan (about 3 years) and a Bible church in Zion, Illinois for over 36 years, after which I retired from fulltime ministry and moved to
Hutchinson, Kansas. Since then, I have served as interim pastor at the First
Mennonite Church of Pretty Prairie and as a hospice chaplain before assuming
my current position. May I say, the above is quite a condensation of many
years of living!
It is a great privilege to serve the Lord here at PVH as chaplain. Included in
my responsibilities are the following: 1) bringing a brief devotional to staff at
the start of the day and praying for them and residents of PVH; 2) conducting
Bible studies in various “neighborhoods” in PVH; 3) visiting, reading Scripture,
and praying with residents, and 4) administrating the Thursday evening chapel
meetings.
Surely you are aware that special church events are fast approaching: Next
Thursday, April 2, at 3:00 P.M. Maundy services will be held for PVH residents
in two locations. Do plan to attend the Good Friday and Easter Sunday meetings that your church has prepared for you and the community; pray for your
pastor and those who minister with him; and ask the Lord to bring many people
to these holy events to receive the blessing of His Word. May salvation and
revival be experienced by many because of these special meetings.
May 7 is National Day of Prayer; and the churches of Inman and Pleasant
View Home are cooperating in a National Day of Prayer Meeting, which will be
held at PVH in the chapel at 7:00 P.M. Representatives from various churches
will bring special music and lead us in prayer, confessing our sins and asking
the Lord to send His revival. Remember Jeremiah 33:3 “Call unto Me; and I
will answer you and show you great and mighty things, which you do not
know.”

Just an update on our Music And Memory journey: We have gathered
all (or as many as I could find!) of the neighborhood CD collections and
have finished copying them onto a master play list on the computer.
Staff will be able to log on to a main account and find songs to put on an
ipod (music player). If you have questions about the Music and
Memory program, please call Jason, Jalane, or the unit coordinator for
your loved one’s neighborhood for information. I also want to remind
everyone to please let staff in you loved one’s neighborhood know specifically what songs, types of music, and artists, your loved one has enjoyed throughout their life. We want to make song lists as personal as
possible for those
individuals who
would like to
participate in this
program. We
have a wide variety of music
available and if we
can’t find something in our music
library, we can purchase it on line. Our hope in doing this, is if your
loved one is living with dementia or is anxious and unable to find rest,
that we can provide moments of joy, moments of peace, and memories
brought back to life through the power of music they loved. We also see
this as an opportunity for bonding and sharing between staff and your
loved ones and also, another opportunity for you, as family and friends to
spend time interacting with your loved one through a common, inborn
connection of music and rhythm. We welcome you to join us on our musical journey!

Hope you all enjoyed March as
much as we did! The weather
was mostly delightful and we
took advantage of it in many
ways! Our residents continue
to have fun with Jen, Director
of Wellness, who leads them
once a week in all different
kinds of activities. Above she had them make “helicopters”
out of paper and watch them fly. Another day everyone was
paired up and using the paddles & balls for some good exercise. Wes, Amanda, Kay &
Lorene are in the picture to the
right having fun! Below, some
we had during our 1st picnic out in the park in Inman in March
I doubt if we have ever had a picnic outside this soon in the
year before! Irene Thiessen won our Spelling Bee for March
and Keith B. was our high scoring bowler at Starlight Lanes
for this month but in the picture below you see him enjoying a
great breakfast at Firehouse
of us went to The Mustard
Seed for a delicious lunch in Buhler. Amanda had never been
there and she thought it was delicious! On our bucket list this
Spring was to go to JC Penny’s and
do some shopping! Glennis, Liz
and Lorene were able to find some
bargains while they were there and
bring them home! Look at the fun
Café. School colors were worn on CC with
these staff and Vern showing their loyalty!! Will see y’ all on April 27 at Dutch Kitchens & Stutzmans! Call or email me!

April 2015
Another month of 2015 has flown by again! But
we sure had fun in March.
We
started it out welcoming
baby
one enjoyed especially the
fun
Liam with a baby shower
games we played.
every-
We also celebrated St. Patrick’s Day making sure
we all had green on so we didn't get pinched! Learned
some new facts about the day but I have to say watching everyone playing and laugh-
ing
tionary game was the cherry
on
to the St.Patrick’s Day Pic-
the cake! Or I should say the
shamrock on the cake! :)
I’m sure April will be just as fun with
Easter and nice weather coming our way!
We will be planning more meals on the grill
and enjoying the fresh air but also outings
of fun!

March was quite a busy month! We welcomed our new friend Georgia! We went to
the Eisenhower museum at the beginning the
month! That was a blast, we were lucky to
have such a beautiful day!
Then just a few days later we celebrated
Darrells birthday! He wanted an angel food
cake and
lucky for
him,
Bonnie
was here
that day to
make
one. The
rest of us
have had
failed attempts at
making
them before..
Then on the seventeenth we celebrated
Saint Patricks day! We had an amazing lunch,
everything we ate was green! Even our drinks,
I’m surprised we
didn’t
turn green
that day!
On the 24th we were supposed to go to Hendricks Exotic Animal farm, again, and it got
canceled because of the weather, again. So we
went with spur of the moment decisions though,
had our picnic inside, and then went to Sonic
and all ordered our favorite drink!
We did manage to
squeeze in a little time
and work on some
Easter decorations and
look forward to celebrating with Bridgett
Gabi Ceniceros
on her baby girl!

Heritage Inn
Spring is here! And
just like the flowers and trees are
starting to bloom.
It seems like so are
all the changes
happening at the
Heritage Inn!
Our walls have
been painted and
the installation of
our new carpet has started on March 23rd.
It is a little hectic right now but everyone is
doing a good job trying to make the process a smooth one for everyone!
“If
we had no winter,
the spring would not
be so pleasant; if we
did not sometimes
tasted diversity,
prosperity would not
be so welcome.”
-- Anne Bradstreet
March seems to have
gone by in the blink of
an eye! We had a couple of birthdays we
celebrated with balloons and cake of
course! On St. Patrick’s
day we enjoyed some
“green” food! Including
green lemonade, some
punch and corn beef
and cabbage, and finished it off with some
delicious Shamrock
Shakes.
Remembrance Wall
On March
4th

I would also like to thank all the families that took the me to come and take pictures with their loved ones! I think everyone got to enjoy that and also take advantage of some nice spring weather! Upcoming Events!
April 9th We are going to breakfast at the Fire House
Café in Hutchinson!
April 23rd We are going on a Picnic at the Park!
May 4th is our Stutzmans Trip! We will be also be going
to eat lunch at the Dutch Kitchen that day.

Ivy Grove
Have you ever flown a whirly bird?
Well we did! Jammin with Jennifer
likes to exercise not just our bodies
Ivy Grove and Rapid Recovery staff thought a picnic would be a great
way to start spring. They planned the food and where to go. We took
advantage of the Inman Park right next to us. They also couldn't have a
picked a better day. Mother Nature cooperated with
lots of sunshine and that is just where most of the
residents wanted to sit was in the sunshine to help
shake off those winter blues! A big thank you for
everyone who helped to make it a success!
but our brain. And plus it was fun
to do and actually see our bird do its
whirly! Some ladies requested a
trip to JCPennys and so that’s where
we went. Susan and Joyce had a great
time looking around for the sales. Of
course we worked up a good appetite
and had a wonderful meal at Olive
Garden. Juanita had never been to the
Mustard Seed in Buhler so off we
went. She cleaned her plate and
thought it was quite tasty. She
plans to make a return trip soon.
On April 28th we are looking forward to taking a huge group to Dutch
Kitchen and Stutzman Greenhouse to pick out flowers for our deck. If
you would like to meet your loved one there to help them please call or
email me for more information.
Here is Fern and Melissa taking it
easy in the Ivy lobby, just enjoying each others company. Its good
to be among friends.
