Question 2. Unseen Translation.
(20 marks)
Translate the following passage into natural English in the space provided. Note that words
in bold are given at the end of the translation. You should attempt ALL of the translation.
Lavinia and the Goddess.
Prope oram Graeciae erat insula. In magna et longa insula
erat casa. In casa habitabat parva puella, Lavinia. Filia nautae
erat. Lavinia saepe misera erat, quod insulae silvae erant
obscurae, et bestias silvarum timebat. Interdiu ursae prope
casam ambulant; noctu sub stellis per fenestras puella figuras
miras videre potest. Interdum quoque multas balaenas in aquis
videt. Balaenae sunt amicae, sed gratae puellae non sunt.
Olim hieme, ut fabula est, puella per oram errabat. Mox
longinqua a casa erat. Subito puella erat amissa! Dicit, “Ubi
nunc sum? Nonne semitam ad casam invenire possum?” Puella
autem semitam non videre poterat.
Procul cavernam videt. In caverna ara antiqua deae Dianae
stat. Statim Lavinia pro ara sedet et clamat, “Magna dea,
auxilium oro! Monstra mihi semitam!”
Dea bona puellae dicit, “Nunc amissa es, sed mox tuta in
casa tua eris. Te in aquilam mutabo; tum ad casam tuam
celeriter volare poteris. Cum in casa eris, te in puellam iterum
mutabo!”
Denique Lavinia est in casa; nunc laeta est.
