This is the time of year when we reflect on our
successes and challenges. As I look back on
2006, first I remember all of our clients and friends
who helped us establish our new company. We
received some extremely helpful support from
people in the community who embraced our new
brand, and I would like to extend my warm thanks
to all of you.
I also think about how fortunate we are to live in
such a beautiful city. This is why I was motivated
to launch the V List magazine, and we will
continue to highlight the people and places that
make our home so special. In this issue, we are
pleased to feature a story by Dr. Shehla Ebrahim
about climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro to benefit BC
Children’s Hospital, and a story about the work of
Jane Vilimek, a unique West Vancouver artist. We
also raise a glass to the season with recipes for
celebratory drinks and provide shopping tips with
our Top Ten gift ideas.
I take this opportunity to wish everyone Happy
Holidays and every success in the New Year.
Sincerely,
Karim Virani

Reaching the
Summit of
Hope
Tears of exhilaration and joy streamed down my face on the morning of
Oct. 6, 2006 as I reached the 5,895-metre summit known as the Roof of
Africa: Mt. Kilimanjaro. cushed through me, along with a series of images
from my eight-day trek on the slopes of this majestic mountain.
Mt. Kilimanjaro was born a million and a half years ago as a volcano. It
was later flanked by two other volcanoes, Shira and Mawenzi. These
eventually became extinct while Kilimanjaro continued to erupt, covering
Shira’s collapsed crater with lava. Kili, as it is called, is now considered a
sleeping volcano and sulphuric-smelling fumes occasionally still emanate
from its crater.
Our expedition was organized by a non-profit group called Summits of
Hope, which raises money for cancer research and treatment at BC
Children’s Hospital. With the help of generous donors like Karim Virani, I
managed to raise $10,000 for this cause.
Kili is not a technical climb. Getting to the summit does not require scaling
cliff faces or hanging from ropes. It’s the altitude, not the terrain, that turns
back almost two thirds of the people who attempt the summit. We began
our trek at 2,500 metres. We walked on a dirt road flanked by tall grasses
and dotted with a multitude of pastel-coloured wildflowers. A mild breeze
bent tangerine gladioli and brought us the sharp scents of wild mint and
thyme.
We trekked about seven or eight hours a day, ascending slowly, taking
in the beauty of the equatorial forest and the snow-covered dome of

Kilimanjaro. It was so far and yet so close. Would we reach the top? That
seemed to be the question on all our minds as we stared in awe. Until Day
4, we had withstood the altitude quite well but the main challenge was
still ahead of us. Dressed in several layers of clothing to tolerate the cold
temperatures that could dip as low as minus 15 degrees Celsius, we set
out at a slow march with our two guides, 10 porters, provision of water
energy bars and strength of spirit and adventure. We trekked continuously
uphill, occasionally taking very short rests. By about 5,200 meters, we
found just enough energy to put one foot ahead of the other and in a
zombie-like state, we continued what seemed an endless walk up.
Around 6:30 a.m. our guide said, “You are almost there, only 45 minutes
to go!”
As the sun rose shyly, draping the horizon with a deep pink and golden
orange ribbon, I reached the summit at 5,895 meters (19,380 ft.) We
had all made it! I just sat on the ground while emotions brought tears to
my eyes. The rays of sun reflected on the glaciers and the sun rose in a
spectacular fashion as Kilimanjaro threw a shadow off to its west side,
completely engulfing Mt. Mheru.
This climb would not have been possible without the generous support
of Karim Virani and his incredible team, and I extend my deepest thanks
to all of them for making this dream turn into reality. Did I ever think that I
would not make it? No. Nevertheless, I thoroughly enjoyed the journey and
realized that staying within one’s limits and being patient through the ups
and downs was the way to achieve the best results.<<<

Riesling Ice-wine
2004 Mission Hill Family Estate Select Lot Collection
Okanagan, BC
In the vineyards when the fruit was nearly ripe the temperatures were cooler which actually helped slow down ripening
giving longer hang time, more mature tannins and well-developed flavours. Crafted from grape clusters naturally frozen
on the vine, this concentrated voluptuous nectar is the ultimate tribute to winemaking.
Racy and intense, this is all Riesling from its fragrance of honey and citrus fruit to flavours of ripe apricots and orange peel.
A striking clarity of expression, this wine’s unctuous sweetness is offset by zesty, mouth-watering acidity creating a lasting
impression of elegance and finesse. Highest rated Canadian Wine by Wine Access at 94 Points.
> At your dining experience this wine is approx $150 a bottle.
> This is a great accompaniment to custards and vanilla desserts.
Waterbrook Meritage 2000
Columbia Valley, Washington
This is a blend of 36% Cabernet Franc, 28 % Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot and 12% Petit Verdot. Exhibiting an
exceptional standard of high quality this blend of Bordeaux varietals that is predominantly Cabernet Franc is impressive.
This Meritage was ready to drink at its release and continues to blossom into an outstanding wine drinking experience
after just a few years of cellaring.
Bright garnet hues bounce around in this wine. Rich black fruit, dark chocolate on the nose with pleasant nuances
of tobacco and current. This Meritage has ripe and rich flavors of plum, black cherry and cassis. It is full-bodied and
extremely well-structured. Wine Spectator rates this at 91 points.
> At your dining experience this wine is approx $95 a bottle.
> This Meritage goes excellent with a rack of lamb.
Yalumba Shiraz/Viognier 2003
Barossa, Australia
Yalumba has for more than 150 years been a vital part of the Barossa, making wines that reflect the best of the
region. This wine is no exception. Made from Barossa Shiraz grown on 30 to 50-year-old vines and enhanced
with a splash of Viognier, it is a wine of concentrated flavour and aroma.
The Viognier adds a sweet floral lift supporting the Shiraz flavours of cloves, spices, plum and dark cherries,
giving a richer mouth feel silky texture and soft tannins. The nose displays wonderful perfumes and florals with a
touch of game on the dark fruits, pepper and spices aromas. Wine Spectator rates this 91 points.
> At your dining experience this wine is approx $57 a bottle.
> This Shiraz is paired nicely with steaks and lamb.

counterparts.
Very deep crimson in colour. Sweet ripe spicy blackberries, blackcurrants and blueberries wrapped in plums and anise with
hints of vanilla and cedar. Sweet fleshy fruit on the palate, rich mature fruit flavours; soft with velvety textured tannins and a long
finish. Distinctively Shiraz.

Pale gold in colour with gold reflexes, this Chardonnay is fruity with clean varietals character and good vanilla
flavour on the nose. The palate is smooth and well balanced. It is known to be a soft wine with traces of fruity
flavors.
> At your dining experience this wine is approx $65 a bottle.
> Light pasta, Shellfish and Halibut are a nice match for this chardonnay.
Lanson Black Label Brut Champagne
Reims France N/V
If there is one Non-Vintage Brut champagne that is universally appreciated, it is surely Lanson Black
Label, a great classic that embodies the ideas and the character of a great House. What makes Lanson
style a little different is that they do not induce malo-lactic fermentation. By excluding this process, the
freshness and fruitiness of the individual cuvées are preserved, and the wines keep better.
It has a brilliant and clear colour that is is reminiscent of the straw colour and hints of amber characteristic
of the Pinot Noir grape. It is lively in the flute, with a fine string of bubbles. It gives an impression of vitality
and springtime scents, together with hints of “toast “ and honey from a variety of flowers.
> At your dining experience this wine is approx $95 a bottle.
> This Brut can be served any time of day or night. It is great with the first course.

PULP FANTASY
Whimsical characters
blend art and soul
“T
here must be a beast living up there,” blurted Jane Vilimek, as she
entered her new kitchen for the first time 14 years ago. This statement
ignited Jane’s passion for papier maché sculpture and inspired the creation
of an 18-foot-long monster. NOGARD (‘dragon’ backwards) now
resides in a space usually relegated to collecting dust or
baskets, on top of Jane’s kitchen cabinets.
This former interior designer, artist and writer had
always been drawn to 3-D artwork over other formats.
So she set out to learn about other papier maché
artists and
the evolution of the craft.
Soon she was
creating original,
innovative
art with recycled
materials.
Over the past 14 years,
Jane has busily and
imaginatively created dozens
of beasts, beings, initials, and
organic interpretations that
reflect her whimsical view of
the world. Bigger is always better
when
it comes to papier maché, as far as Jane is
concerned. Its lightweight characteristics
and limitless possibilities stimulate her
creativity, which happily emerges as a baby
elephant head with sad, wise eyes and threefoot earspan, with a tiny bird balanced on top
of his wrinkly head. Another time it’s expressed
in a 10-foot-tall ‘Occasion’ tree lighting up a corner of her living room yearround, with sparkling lights and seasonal decorations.
Painting shards of broken glass with bizarre colours of nail
polish, Jane creates compelling eyes for her beasts and
beings. And the eyes have it all. Jane says: “As soon as
I attach the eyes to the face, its little soul is born, and
a name usually jumps into my mind.” From that point
on, as other features emerge and the finishing touches
are applied, she refers to the piece by name.
Last spring Jane’s work, and in particular, NOGARD
caught the eye of HGTV’s That’s Clever producers.
Her original beast recently became
proud papa of a new TV “monstar.” NOGARD JR. was created on
camera for an upcoming program
featuring 18 local Vancouver 3-D
artists. The show, to be aired in
late summer 2007 covers the
processes of design, armature
construction, paper layering, and
finishing involved in each piece created by
Jane.
Among her few small pieces are initials Jane
has created to commemorate milestone
birthdays for her close friends, along with
Oprah Winfrey, and Ellen deGeneres. These
are printed with magnified signatures across
the front of the letters. These oversized wallmountable initials can also be linked together for a

unique wedding gift, complete with an inscription from the artist
or the giver. Jane’s ‘pot-head’ vases are hilarious caricatures of
people’s faces and can hold fresh or dried flowers, or
even serve as a great hat-stand.
Another of Jane’s passions is words. A strong believer
in the impact of powerful words and statements,
Jane creates gigantic wall-sized quotations, handembroidered on fabrics. This is not grandma’s
embroidery. These pieces, ranging from four by six
feet to four by twelve feet, dominate the room
and literally make a statement. Taking her talents
in yet another direction, Jane recently completed
writing and illustrating a manuscript on English
homonyms, which will be published soon.
You can visit Jane’s website at www.pulpfantasy.ca, but
you should really go and see her studio/gallery/home
where you can see, touch, and truly be impacted by the
soul of each piece. While at her studio, check
out Jane’s latest project: a flock of life-sized
trumpeter swans destined to fly through her
atrium-style dining room, filling the soaring 24foot-high glass ceiling space.
The purpose of art in homes, restaurants and businesses is to
provide a distraction from our hectic days. Pulp Fantasy will
inject whimsy and imagination where it is most needed. Jane
most enjoys creating pieces for specific spaces, and working
with her clients to create one-of-a-kind art which speaks to you,
commands your attention, and mostly makes you smile.<<<

Feeling like you’re not getting enough quality time with your doctor?
Looking for better access to medical expertise?
The Copeman Healthcare Centre is the place for you.
Now in its second year, the Copeman Healthcare Centre is planning to expand its primary healthcare business model to locations across Canada.
“We are delivering a health service that Canadians are crying out for,”
said Don Copeman, founder of the Centre. “Our team of physicians and
specialists are committed to meeting patient needs of unhurried care and
access to medical expertise.”
The Copeman Healthcare Centre in downtown Vancouver is Canada’s first
private primary healthcare facility. The Centre delivers an integrated team
of doctors and healthcare professionals specializing in advanced health
screening, disease prevention and management. Membership is limited,
but the Vancouver Centre is still accepting new patients.
“We are dedicated to ensuring that our clients live the longest, healthiest and most pain-free lives possible,” says Copeman. “The heart of our
program is a comprehensive health plan based on advanced screening for
early signs of disease, and on detailed analysis of medical and family history. However, the soul of the program is the health education, counseling,
and coaching that we provide our clients as they follow their health plan.”

of innovation that is desperately needed in Canada right now. “It all boils
down to the two things that define quality primary healthcare, access to
professional expertise and the proper amount of time spent with your doctor and other professionals.”
Each client receives lifelong care from a team of people whose skills and
expertise are matched with the client’s disease risks. At a minimum, everyone is assigned an expert physician, a registered dietician, a kinesiologist

We carefully monitor their health – giving them all of the time and expert

Chanel. The name epitomizes luxury, glamour, refinement, and
elegance. Since she founded her Paris fashion business in the
early 20th Century, Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel influenced the way
women dressed, wore their hair and accessorized their outfits.
Her innovative ideas and driving passion for perfection steered
her name to global proportions, which remains a leading and
trend-setting fashion house nearly a century later.
So when it comes to choosing a gift item to celebrate and
honour a woman in your life, be she a mother, sister, teen or
senior, something bearing the Chanel label ensures it will be
received with joy.
For the past 23 years Chanel design has been in the hands
of Karl Lagerfeld. His stewardship of the collections reflects
hallmark references to Chanel’s glorious past while modernizing
the designs for today’s lifestyles. Each season he creates fresh
prêt-á-porter and haute couture collections that delight fashion’s
aficionados. The variety of styles each season offers women
new ways to celebrate their femininity and to be at the forefront
of current fashion thinking.
The Vancouver Chanel boutique stocks beautiful leather goods
including satchels, purses and wallets, sparkling jewellery
and watches set with diamonds and gemstones along with an
elegant array of scarves, and beauty products that will answer
the question for all budgets of what to give for the holiday
season.
For the discriminating woman, Chanel No. 5, the world’s most
recognized fragrance, is a must. This glorious fragrance was
launched in 1921 and is available in several forms including
body cream, gel elixir, bath oil, moisture mist, and eau de
parfum. Prices range from $50 to $125. Exclusive to the
boutique are two gift sets each containing three lip-glosses or
lipsticks packaged in little satin boxes. Priced at $64 and $115
respectively, they are the perfect gift for a young woman.

If she loves the outdoors and Whistler is her playground a pair of earmuffs lined with luxurious Orylag
rabbit fur $325, will keep her cosy. Chanel herself loved fur and often trimmed her coats and jackets,
even lined her coat entirely with fur.
A thoughtful gift for the avant-guarde-minded is a pair of fingerless kid gloves decorated with tiny
Chanel buttons encrusted with mini Swarovski crystals, $1,000, a go-with-any-outfit look. Medieval
stained glass windows were the inspiration for multicoloured embroideries that spilled from the neck
and shoulders and adorned waists in the fall/winter collection. This touch is echoed in large, important
brooches and cuffs priced from $1100. And a magnetic closure cuff in narrow black and white enamel
stripes bearing the familiar double C logo in Swarovski crystals sells for $2,700.
In addition to the ubiquitous quilted bag with its chain handle are large crescent-shaped bags in
distressed calfskin with braided handles, $2,300, another style in caviar-finished calfskin is shaped like
a doctor’s bag, $2,025.
A wristwatch is a timepiece that will be treasured for generations. Chanel offers beautiful ladies’
watches with the face decorated with a Camellia flower-shaped bezel in pave diamonds and
pink sapphires, $16,400. The collection of J12 ceramic and anodized aluminum, limited-edition
watches features a larger
face
decorated with numerous choices of white or black
diamonds, pink and blue
sapphires and rubies with watch straps available
in several designs.
Many watches are in stock while others
must be
ordered. Prices range from $3,800 to

A Little History
Chanel began the trend for society women of bronzing in the sun. Before she tanned, ladies carried parasols and wore wide brimmed
hats to avoid the sun.
Chanel “borrowed” several items of menswear to adapt them for women including the argyle sweater that she had made into cardigans.
She took wide-legged sailors’ trousers and adapted them as well for women.
She wore pyjama-style pants for day and evening. Women followed her suit and began to wear trousers.
Chanel ordered jersey fabric from a mill that supplied men’s underwear manufacturers and used it for her supple dresses.
She also had beautiful fluid tweeds made to her specification, which she used for suits.
She “invented” the little black dress, which has become a staple in women’s wardrobes for the past 80 years.
She adopted the sailor’s cap and added her own touch, a jeweled brooch.
She was the first to mix fine and costume jewellery for day or night.

ENTERTAINMENT
Craig Stowe
One day after the release of the much-anticipated Casino Royale movie, JetSet
Crew hosted its 13th annual James Bond Martini Party. The man behind the
scenes is Craig Stowe, Vancouver’s very own James Bond. His tall stance, blue
eyes and impeccable dress code have earned him the title of Agent 007.
The get-together that started it all was the James Bond Martini Party. The original
soirée had a humble beginning at Craig Stowe’s South Granville apartment. Over
the past 13 years, it has mushroomed into a 1000-guest Bond extravaganza that
was held this year at the Vancouver Aquarium. Each year the event is built around
a different historic Bond film, and of course the party location changes to mimic
the backdrop of the movie. This year the theme paid tribute to the 1964 classic
Bond film Thunderball, the underwater epic set in the Bahamas.

ENTERTAINMENT
Vancouver’s very own James Bond
Craig Stowe has entertaining in his blood. In the beginning of his career as
a liquor and wine agent, he launched new spirit brands such as Finlandia,
Belvedere, Chopin Vodka, Havana Club Rum and Omeca Tequila into the
Western Canadian bar and restaurant market. With a limited promotional
budget, he and his team would create elaborate brand launch events from
scratch. Events gained the city-wide reputation of a party no one wants to
miss. Those grew into a series of original parties and annual events.
These days he has teamed up with movie production master Jamie
Goehring and 30 flight crew members to create 6 finely tuned Vancouver
events. The JetSet upcoming events are JetSet Lounge, Richie Rich Martini
Party, The Hampton Polo Party, Red Red Wine, JetSet Halloween and of
course their famous James Bond Martini Party. The JetSet Crew boasts a
5,000-member roster, with continuously sold-out events. A great event is
one that attracts the right crowd and generates an aura of anticipation and
excitement. In order to create this “buzz,” the crew begins by developing
a unique statement for each party. Guests feel at ease, as they know that
everyone at the JetSet Crew event is a friend of a friend.
The word is spreading across Canada. Both Toronto and Calgary have
come knocking on the door to see how they can create their own satellite
JetSet Crew Events. Staff of stores like Holt Renfrew and Staccato always
know when there is an event just by the number of customers buying
special outfits for the party.
You can inquire about the next JetSet event at www.jetsetcrew.com.<<<

WELCOME
As I am sure you realize that I keep a day-to-day, week-to-week and month-to-month close look at
the residential real estate market on the North Shore and that I am constantly answering the popular
question – “has the market reached the top yet?” In my opinion “no it has not”, but there are some
signs in some market areas of Greater Vancouver that the rate of price increase is not as hectic as it
has been over the last year or so. Cameron Muir, a market analyst with CMHC states that the Lower
Mainland real estate markets can expect to experience a slow down as prices keep squeezing buyers
out of the market. It is still a sellers market and we won’t see change until we see more listings. Homes
priced correctly sell quickly and we are not seeing the frenzy we saw last year which is good news for
buyers.

WEST VANCOUVER
$3,488,000
West Vancouver Market Comment
Another steady month for residential sales in West Vancouver, where the
market is still favoring sellers but where the price increases have tapered
off. West Vancouver is such a great place to live that buyers are prepared
to pay a premium for this privilege. This fact is reflected in the MLS
statistics which show that the sales prices for residential properties in West
Vancouver are the highest for residential properties in Greater Vancouver.
The number of listings have increased and this will help to make the
market more stable in the months to come. The fundamentals under-lying
the housing demand in Greater Vancouver continue and immigration, low
interest rates, high employment and a strong economy will sustain this
demand into 2007.

MARKET WATCH
September sales move towards a balanced market
Vancouver, B.C. Oct 3, 2006 -The Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver (REBGV) reports that total residential sales for detached, attached
and apartment properties reached 2,519 units in September 2006, a decrease of 24.7 per cent compared to the 3,344 units sold in September
2005, and a 11.5 per cent decrease compared to the 2,845 sold during the same period in 2004.
New listings for detached, attached and apartment properties increased by 11.4 per cent to 5,115 units when compared to the 4,590 units
listed in September 2005.
“We’re moving towards a balanced market, a balance that brings
greater stability to buyers and sellers throughout the Greater
Vancouver area,” says REBGV president Rick Valouche. “We’re finally
seeing an increase in inventory and that is great news for buyers in
our active market. “
“We’re still selling far more properties monthly than we were four or
five years ago,” notes Valouche. “There’s been a shortage of listings
for some time. If listings continue to increase at this pace, we may
be able to start meeting the strong demand for real estate that has
been the driving characteristic of the Greater Vancouver market for
the past five years.”
According to Multiple Listings Service® (MLS®) data, sales of apartment properties decreased by 18.4 per cent to 1,093 sales in September
2006 compared to 1,339 sales in September 2005. The benchmark price of an apartment property in Greater Vancouver, calculated by the
MLSLink® Housing Price Index, is $334,482, up 21.6 per cent from one year ago.
Sales of attached properties decreased by 33.8 per cent in September 2006 to 392 sales, compared to 592 sales in September 2005. The
benchmark price of an attached unit is $411,898, up 19.6 per cent from a year ago.
Sales of detached properties decreased by 26.8 per cent in September 2006 to 1,034 sales, compared to 1,413 sales in September 2006. The
benchmark price of a detached unit is $659,269, up 18.2 per cent from last year.
The Real Estate industry is a key economic driver in British Columbia. In 2004, dollar volume
sales of homes in Greater Vancouver set a new record at more than $13.8 billion. Based on this
figure, Greater Vancouver home sales in 2004 generated over $1 billion in related sales.
Sales of detached properties decreased by 28.3 per cent
in July 2006 to 1,031 sales, compared to 1,438 sales in
July 2006. The benchmark price of a detached unit is
$644,461, up 19.4 per cent from last year.
NORTH VANCOUVER
$1,578,000
North Vancouver Market Comment
Listings in all three categories of residential real estate, detached, attached
and apartments in North Vancouver increased in the past month which will
help to steady the market and give greater stability to price increases. This
is the best news that buyers can expect, as this settling down of the market
will give buyers more time to make serious decisions. A balanced market
is still the best news for both sellers and buyers. The average sale price of a
single family home in Greater Vancouver, based on MLS statistics was down
slightly in September 2006 for the first time this year, and this trend may
continue for the balance of 2006. North Vancouver close to the City and the
mountains continues to attract buyers.

VANCOUVER
$3,188,000
Vancouver Market Comment
The three main areas of high rise condominium development in Vancouver
are Bayshore, False Creek and Yaletown and each of these three areas have
experienced great growth in both the number of new units constructed
and in the sale prices during the year. According to Canada Mortgage and
Housing Corp, new housing starts in Canada fell for the second month in
a row in September 2006 and this trend follows the pattern set in the U.S.

Douglas
Judge
The V List recently got a chance to meet with one of
Vancouver’s biggest celebrities, Christopher Judge.
Christopher and his fiancée, actress Gia Patton, and
their two-year-old daughter Chloe joined us for a casual
afternoon.
Facts
Name: Christopher Douglas Judge
Recent Character: Teal’C on “Stargate SG-1”
Eyes: Brown
Height: 6’2
Hair: would be dark brown
Married: almost
Children: four
Relationship
Christopher is engaged to actress Gia Patton. They
are a complementary couple. Chris is the epitome of
masculinity and Gia is absolutely gorgeous. To say
the least, they look beautiful together. They have not
planned their wedding day as they are in the middle of
a major renovation of their new home. The couple has a
two-year-old daughter together. It seems that the young
girl, who got the best features from both her father and
mother, may follow them into their profession as she
already has the social skills.

Family
Christopher has three other children with his first wife;
they are Christopher 15yrs, Cameron is 12yrs and
Catrina is 10yrs. Christopher is a fully committed dad.
He is active in his children’s school activities, sports,
plays and social lives. They are an extremely active
family. He spends a lot of time on Vancouver Island
watching football, basketball, and baseball games,
you can also spot him at tennis matches and track and
field meets. Chloe has just signed with an agency and
will act and/or model (which at this age is just being
herself–a toddler!) as long as she has fun doing it. Gia
and Christopher plan on having a couple more children
together.
JUDGE RULES
Physical
We all know the notable Christopher Judge. He is a big fellow with an
extremely gentle demeanour. Christopher is distinctive even when he’s
out of character, given his strong frame and impressive baritone voice.
Christopher has to maintain his physique by doing as many as six workouts
a day. During taping, Christopher is up at 4 a.m. to work out. In off-season
he will gain up to 70 pounds. His athletic look comes honestly; he attended
the University of Oregon on a football scholarship and was a three-time
All-American.
Credits
Christopher Judge played Teal’c, a Jaffa, one of the Goa’uld’s servants
who acts as host to the Goa’uld symbiotes until their maturation. He and
one other character were the only ones to appear on all 10 seasons of
Stargate SG-1, which was the longest-running science fiction series on
American television. “Once you break the 10-year barrier,” he says, “it puts
you in the pantheon of all television shows, into the upper echelons along
with M*A*S*H*, Cheers, and shows that are revered in television history.”
Besides his work on Stargate SG-1, Christopher has played many cool
roles in movies and shows such as: House Party II, Cadence, Bird On
A Wire, Little Feet, and The Glory Years. He played a lead role on the
television series Sirens in addition to guest-starring in MacGyver, Gabriel’s
Fire, 21 Jump Street and Wiseguy. Christopher also does voiceover work,
including recordings for video games by Electronic
Arts.<<<

Q&A with Mike Watson
The V List got a chance to meet up with the charismatic Mike Watson. It
was bring your kid to work day so his son Chris joined us. Mike oversees
all of the North Shore Credit Union’s branches, Call Centre operations,
Marketing and Wealth Management activities. He is also Chair of the
North Vancouver Chamber of Commerce.
V: What did you enjoy about living on the North Shore?
MW: I love the outdoor lifestyle. We live close to Lynn Headwaters and
there is no better place to go for a walk or a run. Also, I grew up in a small
town, Trail, B.C. and I find North Vancouver to have some of the small town
charm with big city amenities. I have been in the Vancouver area since
attending UBC in 1984. We have bounced around the Lower Mainland
but settled into North Vancouver almost eight years ago.
V: What are your dislikes about living in this area?
MW: The downside of living in a rainforest….the rain.
V: When the time comes where do you plan to retire?
MW: At this stage of my career, retirement seems a long way away…
V: What is your idea of perfect happiness?
MW: That feeling that you have when you have worked hard and seen the
fruits of your labours. Ideally, this would be augmented by a kitchen full of
family and friends, a gourmet meal and a great bottle of wine.
V: What is your greatest personal fear?
MW: My goal will be to have made a positive impact in the world during my
time here so my fear would be looking back over my life and wondering if
I had made a real difference.
V: Are you involved with any North Shore-specific charities?
MW: I am quite involved in “extra-curricular” activities on the North Shore.
I was a Lions Gate Hospital Foundation Director for many years and I
am currently Chair of the North Vancouver Chamber of Commerce. I also
coach for the Lynn Valley Soccer Association and previously coached my
daughter’s team in the North Vancouver Girls Soccer Association.

V: What do you consider your greatest achievement?
MW: Personally… My wife and I have raised two beautiful children who
we are very proud of.
Career wise… I have been a part of a team that has transformed North
Shore Credit Union into an organization that is being recognized as a
leading financial services boutique. We all had a lot of fun when the Globe
and Mail wrote about our Park Royal branch as a “financial spa”.
V: What would you like to accomplish that you haven’t done yet?
MW: Life is a journey of personal growth I just hope to grow into the best
person I can be.
V: Who are your heroes?
MW: On which day? My life is full of heroes. I get inspired from people I
meet on a daily basis.
V: Any funny work stories to share?
MW: Absolutely! Back when I was a young 27 year old junior branch
manager I had to deal with my first bank robbery. I forgot all my training
of being the “calm composed person” Instead I instantaneously dropped
everything I was doing just to run after the robber. It wasn’t a smart
decision as I soon found a gun pointed towards me. I did the “Starsky and
Hutch” roll to the floor, while the robber got into his getaway car.
V: What is your pet peeve?
MW: Excessive structure and bureacracy
V: What is your most marked characteristic?
MW: My passion for life.
V: What do you like most in a woman?
MW: Great ankles!
V: What is your personal motto?
MW: Carpe diem <<<

Cleaning Up
the Future
>>> One of the questions that frequently arrives in the mailboxes of Ballard
Power Systems seems almost fanatical: Where can I buy a fuel cell to
retrofit my car?
For those who would never even attempt a do-it-yourself oil change, the
level of tinkering necessary to replace a standard engine with a gasolinefree version is incomprehensible. And yet the question reflects the level
of excitement that has surrounded the fuel cell since the 1980s. In basic
terms, Ballard has developed a system that combines hydrogen fuel and
oxygen from air to produce electrical energy. The benefits of a fuel-cellpowered vehicle are extraordinary: not only is it efficient and quiet, but it
doesn’t produce fumes. The only tailpipe emission is water vapour.
It’s not possible, by the way, to buy a fuel cell from Ballard, even if you’re
a perfectly capable weekend mechanic.
>>>While a fleet of five demonstration vehicles roam Vancouver’s streets
daily, a commercially viable model is still in the making. In the meantime,
however, the technology is being used in other ways including forklifts
in North American warehouses and in residential energy and heating
systems in Japan.
“The fuel cell has been the promise of the future for a long time,” says
Noordin Nanji, Ballard’s vice president and chief customer officer. Its
current applications, he explains, are small steps towards creating a
viable model for the vehicle market. “The targets for an automotive fuel cell
from both cost and performance standpoints are very stringent. Because
those technical challenges are the most demanding, we get the benefit of
leveraging our automotive development for products for other, nearer term
markets. So it’s kind of a virtuous circle.”
>>>The technology only becomes all the more attractive as people become
more conscious of our dependence on burning environmentally costly
fossil fuels. Booming economic growth in places like China and India are
particularly alarming given the accompanying pressures: more cars, more
ovens, more hot water. Governments around the world are looking for
ways to decrease carbon emissions, prompted by the growing threat of
global warming. Producing clean energy is becoming imperative.
Still, no matter how much sense it makes to protect our environment,
people are more likely to make changes that affect their pocketbook. The
fuel-cell-powered cogeneration system recently introduced in Japan—
where electricity is about four times more expensive than it is in British
Columbia—sees families saving an average of $600 to $800 U.S. a
year. The system, developed by Ballard and its Japanese partner Ebara
56 | THE V LIST | WINTER 06 | www.thevlist.com

and Chief Customer Officer
LIFESTYLE
Corporation, provides all of a household’s hot water needs as well as
most of the electricity. The fuel cell converts natural gas or kerosene to
electricity, providing up to one kilowatt of electricity at any given time. Any
additional power the home needs comes from the grid, and this use can
be tracked on a monitor in the home.
>>>The Japanese government has been very supportive of the technology,
subsidizing each system in 2006 with the equivalent of $41,000 US.
Because British Columbia uses largely hydroelectric power, which is
a relatively clean source, there is not the same urgency to employ the
technology here. In Japan, most power is generated from fossil fuel
combustion. Other parts of the world that have high electricity costs and
that currently rely on non-renewable energy, such as Korea, Germany, and
some parts of the U.S., are also potential markets for the co-generation
system.
Closer to home, the fuel cell has found a niche in the materials handling
market. In early October, Ballard signed a $22-million deal with Richmondbased General Hydrogen Corp. to supply 2,900 of its Mark 9 SSL™
fuel cells for use in electric forklifts. Here, the benefit of the technology
is improved productivity. Conventional lead-acid batteries need to be
replaced and recharged, usually during a shift. A fuel-cell-powered forklift
can be refueled in minutes, also saves the considerable storage space
needed for spare batteries and will run two to three times longer. “That
particular contract is by volume the largest contract that I’ve ever seen in
the fuel cell industry,” says Nanji. “So it’s a critical proof point that fuel
cells are finally commercially viable and that there are markets we can
access today.”
>>>The fuel cell used in forklifts is a scaled-down version of that used
in cars and buses. The biggest difference, says Nanji, is that the car is
a much more demanding vehicle: it brakes and accelerates frequently
and goes up and down hills. The company is currently gathering valuable
information from field trials of Ballard-powered cars and buses, of which
there are about 140 around the world. In nine major European cities
and in Iceland, Australia and China, 36 Mercedes-Benz Citaro buses
powered with Ballard heavy-duty fuel cell engines are currently operating
on city streets. These buses carry passengers in daily service as part of
several field trial programs. These trials have allowed transit agencies to
try out various ways of generating, storing and distributing the hydrogen
necessary to fuel the vehicles. But one of the most important points the
buses have driven home is the fact that people like them. “We’ve had
situations where people actually let regular buses go by because they
want to ride a fuel cell bus,” says Nanji, adding that they are popular
because they are quiet, produce no emissions and drive smoothly without
vibration. Ballard hopes to have its fuel cell in British Columbia buses
soon. BC Transit and the provincial government have expressed a desire
to have next-generation buses operating in time for the 2010 Winter
Olympics, and Nanji says that Ballard will vie for that opportunity.
Noordin Nanji, Ballard’s Vice President and Chief Customer Officer with the
Ballard Hydrogen Fuel Cell
>>> One of the questions about the viability of the fuel cell car has been
whether people will embrace the idea. The bus trials have helped prove
they will, but another vindication comes from an unlikely source: the hybrid
vehicle, which is powered by an internal combustion engine and electric
batteries. While most people would see the hybrid as a competitor, Nanji
says they have been very positive for Ballard. First, as an alternative to
conventional gasoline engines, they’ve captured a significant market
share. But perhaps more importantly, hybrids still use gasoline and
produce emissions. Even if every car owner in the world drives a hybrid,
eventually the growth in the number of vehicles in the world, driven
mainly by economic growth in countries like India and China, will offset
any reductions in greenhouse gasses that they may provide. “Ultimately,
hydrogen fuel cells are the only solution if we want to move to a zeroemission world to avoid dependence on oil,” he says. “When you go to
places like China, it’s hard to see how they can keep growing without a
solution like the fuel cell.”<<<

Galas big and small make a huge splash! Celebrities and artists lend their support to some of the Lower
Mainland’s biggest art fundraisers!
Erin D’Este, Hannelie Stockenstrom
and Vivian Thom
Auctioneer Barry Scott has been a busy man of late. The veteran Maynard auctioneer fronted some of the city’s
biggest fundraisers and gala-gala-dos. In one week alone, the silver fox and his trusty assistant, his son Sam,
helped five charities raise $1 million plus in the sale of fine art.
Event chairs Erin D’Este, Hannelie Stockenstrom and Vivian Thom were tickled pink when Canuck Markus
Naslund and his wife Lotta made an appearance at Arts Umbrella’s signature Splash Gala. The duo perused
the stellar pieces, mixed and mingled before quietly exiting prior to the big show. Scott did his best to get the
Shimmer party started pushing Gordon Smith’s prized painting to a cool $17,000. Gala-goers helped raise
over $300,000 for Executive Director Lucille Pacey’s pre-eminent visual and performing arts institute for young
people in Canada. Several hundred spent a dazzling evening in the company of 51 glorious paintings by some
of Canada’s most noted artists, such as Smith, Tiko Kerr, Takao Tanabe, Cory Creed, David Wilson, and
Gathie Falk.
Mayor Sam Sullivan and Lynn Zanatta
Naslund and Scott also popped into the Sheraton Wall Centre joining the Mayor Sam Sullivan and his main
squeeze Lynn Zanatta for Canuck Place’s second annual Gift of Time Gala. Comedian Robin William’s
autographed watch was just one of the celebrity time pieces up for auction. TELUS top dog Darren Entwistle
dug deep into his company’s coffers presenting a cheque for $50,000 towards the purchase of medical
equipment for the kid’s hospice. A half million was raised from the formal function. Singer Jann Arden was the
evening’s big surprise. The Canadian songstress and comedian made a special appearance singing for her
supper at the sold out, stellar shindig.
In comparison, Gordon Smith’s silkscreen prints went for a song at $4000 at Friends for Life’s premier benefit
Art for Life Gala Dinner and Auction. Curator Anne Carlson collected fifty-two pieces of fine works for the
13th annual event with net proceeds to support the Diamond Centre for Living and people coping with life
threatening illnesses. Ken West’s Animus Obscurus commanded the evening’s top bid of $8,000 for the oil
on canvas followed by Toni Onley’s water colour on paper and Bruce Woycik’s Westenders at the black tie
optional Four Season soiree.
BC Lions’ Society President Stephen Miller could ‘bear-ly’ contain himself. Scott helped get $50,000 and
$32,000 for artist Gloria Masse’s painted bears at the Great Spirit Bear Auction and Gala hosted at the
Weston Bayshore. Scott expelled little effort when Masse’s Jeanie bear was introduced. Patron Wayne Wile
leaped to his seat shelling out $50,000 for Masse’s piece in memory of his daughter Jeanie who had passed
away just weeks earlier. By the evening’s end, $571,000 was collected from the sale of 32 life-size, seven
–feet, fibreglass Spirit Bear sculptures benefiting BC Lions Easter Seals Society and Canucks for Kids Fund.
Almost $800,000 was raised from the sale of killer whales back in 2004.
Anne Carlson and Friends for Life’s Evin Jones
Movie star and Men in Tree actress Anne Heche with her handsome husband Coleman Lafoon were spotted
at Liberty’s inaugural, invitation-only, exclusive art party Exposed. The two cozied up to the loft and enjoyed the
company of friends and guests at the lavish Exposed fete. Former Canadian Springs founder Glenn Bailey’s
oh-so-trendy, lux and stylish home décor store threw an exclusive art event showcasing some of the Lower
Mainland’s newest and emerging artists: Athena Bax, Jim C. Brown, David B. Edwards, photograpgher David
Ellingsen, Suzy Kim, Tanya Slingsby and sculpture Kay Zigmont. A smart-looking crowd made their way across
the Lions Gate Bridge to the South Granville retail affair of the season. Art enthusiasts were welcomed by
several naked ladies reposing on what must surely have been Sarah Richardson original chaises. Several
hundred sipped on fabulous cocktails and noshed on the culinary delights supplied by Jack Lamont’s Glowbal
while seemingly, effortlessly purchasing art works by some of the city’s hottest emerging artists.

Connie Gutierrez
Extending a hand up, not a hand out.
Connie Gutierrez and her husband, Stacey, chose to move to the North
Shore 18 years ago after visiting as tourists from Chicago. They quickly
realized that few places could match Vancouver’s quality of life or better
suit their active lifestyle. An avid skier, hiker and cyclist, Connie now says,
“I couldn’t imagine living anywhere else.”
Connie is also drawn to the community because “there is a sense of caring
for other people.” This feeling is so important to Connie that she has been
volunteering for the past four years at the Harvest Project. During her
professional career she worked as a teacher and for 15 years in sales at
Telus. She also received training as a career counselor. Connie joined the
Harvest Project because of its emphasis on helping men and women take
care of themselves. “I wanted to help people get back into the work world,”
she says.
The Harvest Project is a North Shore non-profit agency providing free
services to more than 8,500 North Shore residents living in poverty. Services
include personalized client care for goal setting, guidance and support,
addiction counseling, life skills training and job preparation workshops.
These services for long-term success are combined with practical supports
that relieve short-term financial stress. For example, the Harvest Project
provides clients and their families with a month’s worth of food at a time
using a grocery ‘store’ service model. This model allows clients the dignity
of choosing the food they like and will eat, as opposed to a demeaning food
bank line-up. Free home delivery is included to guarantee that everyone
has access to this food service.
Connie volunteers in the resource center, a one-stop shop that gives clients
access to information on all North Shore social, health, family and housing
services. “Our emphasis is on helping clients get started,” says Connie.
“Our job is to keep abreast of the services available and to make sure our
clients get the information that will help them take control of their lives. I
don’t know of another service quite like it. Other agencies tend to focus on
just one aspect of what a person needs instead of the whole person.”
Connie and Stacey Gutierrez.
“I like the fact that I’m helping
people. Often people come in
here lost and depressed. Before
they leave, they feel confident”.
- Connie Gutierrez
“I like the fact that I’m helping people,” she says. “Often people come
in here lost and depressed. Before they leave, they feel confident. They
know they can find a job or improve their lives because they feel different
about their skills and about themselves. I like to know that I have helped
with that.”
The Harvest Project is located at 201 Bewicke Avenue in North Vancouver
and can be contacted at 604.983.9488 or online
