How do community partnerships impact Rouge Valley Health System? Let us count the ways. 5,913 Investing in superior health care: Because of you, Rouge Valley Health System Foundation is delivering on its mission and meeting capital and equipment needs at both hospital campuses that add value to your community. But annual reporting for a local community hospital charity is about much more than simply revenues and expenditures; it’s about how donor dollars are being invested into the community to deliver access to the best hospital services and achieve the goals and priorities identified by the hospital for the best health care for your community. Calculating collaboration: This Annual Report counts the ways that donors like you gave to the hospital and the ways that your donations impacted how services and programs are delivered. This sampling of pictures and stories highlights our mission: To partner with the community to invest in superior health care at Rouge Valley Health System. Whether it was gala emcee Farley Flex sharing that his mother had received excellent cardiac care at RVC, or Dr. Jon Hummel creating a golf tournament in memory of a beloved anesthetist, our 4 signature events attracted community support and benefited from renewed sponsorships. The economic uncertainty in 2009 resulted in challenges for our work supporting the hospital; however, the silver lining came with new and expanded corporate partnerships. An unprecedented number of locations of McDonald’s, Shoppers Drug Mart and RBC Royal Bank participated in their own fundraising campaigns, raising a whopping $174,000 for equipment last year alone. Every penny counts, and we are grateful to the 5,913 individual donors and the 463 businesses, Building capacity: The Rouge Valley Health System Foundation thanks our Vital Links Campaign volunteers, our friends, our generous donors and our government partners for supporting the construction and equipping of our new emergency department at Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital campus, which is now serving the community. Special thanks to the Regional Municipality of Durham for their continued support. This is a major accomplishment, signifying remarkable progress towards the completion of the Redevelopment project. 463 15,523 2 service clubs and foundations that made donations to their local community hospital. In total, we received 15,523 gifts raising over $4,000,000 in one year! Measuring success: The true measure of our success isn’t just a number. The impact of your support is the best indicator of our success. Our accomplishments are yours, providing direct benefit to you and your loved ones, right in your backyard. Despite the challenges we faced in 2009, your continued commitment encourages us to look ahead with optimism.Your gift makes a real and lasting difference, no matter the amount. Your willingness to invest in enhanced health care in your community demonstrates your commitment and generosity. Donations like yours buy equipment and build space that helps save lives. JOHN WIERSMA, Chair, Rouge Valley Health System Foundation CHAD HANNA, President & CEO, Rouge Valley Health System Foundation Now you can see how every dollar you and donors like you contribute really counts! $4,000,000 Counting The Ways | Rouge Valley Health System Foundation RVHS_AR09_v4:Layout 1 2/23/10 9:06 AM Page 3 Our quality focus delivers results for patients Rouge Valley Health System (RVHS) is steadily improving the quality care we provide our patients and effectively spending limited dollars. The Rouge Valley team of nurses, allied health professionals, staff, physicians, volunteers and Board of Directors are increasingly focused and engaged in constant improvement. We continue to demonstrate that improved access to care and improved quality care can be achieved concurrently with fiscal effectiveness. We are simultaneously improving patient care (demonstrated by our published quality and safety indicators available at www.rougevalley.ca/indicators) and at the same time reducing our costs of service delivery. The Rouge Valley team is committed to this path and will not rest on its laurels. We are increasingly working as a strong, cohesive team across both our hospital campuses: Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering (RVAP) and Rouge Valley Centenary (RVC). Our team has delivered many successes for our patients in the last year. We have met all of our commitments to service volumes – in fact we have delivered more care this year than we did last year and have done that in each year since 2006/07. We have maintained or improved the majority of our wait times for service. The Central East Local Health Integration Network (CE LHIN) named our cardiac care program as a regional centre for the 401 corridor, recognizing years of ongoing patient care excellence. The opening of our new diagnostic imaging, fracture clinic and emergency department at RVAP, which went live at 4 a.m. on Nov. 30, 2009, was a great success for us all and especially for our community. Our focus on quality yielded our hospital’s three-year accreditation in 2009. Accreditation Canada surveyors found 3 401 1 % 90 that our Strategic Plan-On-A-Page was among the best implemented and best known that they had seen. They also spotlighted our Passport to Patient Safety training sessions as exemplary. We are recognized as leaders in the CE LHIN and beyond for our ongoing application of Lean management (a philosophy and method of constant improvement). Some examples of Lean results by the Rouge team include: > Patients going home sooner thanks to improved patient flow and discharge planning at both hospital campuses; > Patients and doctors getting lab test results faster at both hospital campuses; > Patients spending less time waiting for care in our emergency departments, where almost 90 per cent of ambulatory patients are discharged in less than four hours; > RVC ambulance offload times continue to be among the lowest in Toronto. This initiative will be implemented at RVAP, now that our new emergency department is open. The Birthing and Newborn Centre at RVC recently celebrated its first full year of delivering babies. Staff at the new centre have led the way by implementing electronic documentation of the care delivered, which has improved the quality and accuracy of charting and improved processes for all staff using the system. We have received notification of first-year operating funding for RVC’s Birthing and Newborn Centre and RVAP’s emergency department. This means we will be able to start to train and hire staff to support these new expansions during 2010/2011. We thank all staff, physicians, volunteers, our RVHS Foundation and our communities for their work and support of our hospital. We have much more to achieve for our patients and communities and we look forward to another year of success. JANET ECKER, Chair, Rouge Valley Health System RIK GANDERTON, President & CEO, Rouge Valley Health System Rouge Valley Health System | Counting The Ways 3 RVHS_AR09_v4:Layout 1 2/23/10 9:06 AM Page 4 Transformation helping to strengthen quality and performance at RVHS At Rouge Valley Health System (RVHS), transformation is helping us to truly live our vision to be the best at what we do.Transformation is helping us to become one of the best acute care community hospitals in Ontario. This process not only involves changes to structures, processes and practices, it also involves changes to culture and mindset. T he 2007 Peer Review Report highlighted areas in which RVHS needed to improve, including organizational culture, leadership development, strategy, financial management and governance. When we compared ourselves to similar hospitals, we realized that there were areas where we could provide better quality service, and could be more efficient in how we delivered care. One of the ways in which we began to transform RVHS is by introducing lean thinking, a management philosophy that originated with Toyota about 50 years ago.The philosophy focuses on eliminating wasted steps, ensuring quality and embracing employee involvement. The program, which has been embraced at other hospitals in Ontario, is having a positive impact on the quality of care given to patients in some key areas at Rouge Valley Health System and staff. Kaizen events, four day events where staff and physicians work together to make improvements in certain programs and departments, have been one way in which transformation has taken place at RVHS. “Kaizens are helping to improve patient flow and satisfaction. Not only are they helping our patients, but staff are also seeing the benefits: an opportunity to be a part of a multidisciplinary improvement team, and a 4 chance to be heard. It’s helping to develop our staff and to boost morale,” says Michele Jordan, vice president and chief transformation officer. Lean is a management philosophy based on the elimination of waste and respect for people. Kaizens are a tool used to identify waste, and to brainstorm ways to eliminate it, based on experience and best practices, to implement changes right away. The Kaizen events have taken place in busy departments at both hospital campuses, focusing primarily on medicine, emergency and surgery, where they will have a major impact on quality, patient flow and discharge planning. Since Kaizen events were first introduced at Rouge Valley in 2008, 511 staff members and 40 physicians have participated in close to 40 Kaizen events. Here are some of the successes that have taken place as a result of Kaizen events and the hard work of our teams in sustaining improvements: > The emergency department at Rouge Valley Centenary (RVC) leads other Torontoarea community hospitals for its ambulance offload time. Reducing ambulance offload times—the time it takes for an EMS worker to release a patient into the care of emergency staff—is vital. The sooner an EMS worker can Counting The Ways | Rouge Valley Health System Foundation offload a patient, the sooner they can return to the community to assist in other emergency situations. > More patients are now pre-assessed at Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering’s Ambulatory Care Unit (ACU) as part of its pre-operative assessment clinic. Now, 90 per cent of elective surgery patients are pre-assessed versus 20 per cent before the Kaizen. Most patients are pre-assessed over the telephone. Those that are pre-assessed in the pre-operative assessment clinic now have most of their screening and tests done in the same room. The actual number of steps taken by a surgical patient in the ACU has decreased by 68 per cent – from 493 steps to just 157.The changes are now taking place at RVC’s pre-operative assessment clinic, continuing these improvements. > Existing space in the RVC emergency department is being used more efficiently, after a designated ambulatory care area was created. The area has helped to improve patient flow and wait times. Within months of its inception, the RVC emergency department was achieving its wait time targets, and kept this up even during last fall’s H1N1 outbreak. KEEPING TRACK OF CONTINUED IMPROVEMENTS: Cecile Munroe, RN, and Paulette Johnson, Utilization Case Coordinator, review the Discharge Planning Board in Rouge Valley Centenary’s 9 East. This board is used to track the status of various patient flow processes, providing a visual way for the unit to monitor how well it is meeting its target. The Discharge Planning Boards were created as a result of a Kaizen event. 40 RVHS_AR09_v4:Layout 1 2/23/10 9:06 AM Page 5 Accreditation Makes Rouge Valley Even Better Rouge Valley Health System (RVHS) is always committed to maintaining the highest standard of patient safety and patient care. At RVHS, a key part of our strategic plan is an unrelenting focus on delivering quality care, ensuring patient and staff safety, and maintaining a healthy workplace. F rom September 21 – 23, 2009, a team of four Accreditation surveyors, all leaders at Canadian hospitals, spent time visiting and evaluating programs at both RVHS hospital campuses. Based on the recently introduced Quentum Accreditation framework, each surveyor was assigned to evaluate specific programs and areas of the hospital. Surveyors carried out both clinical and administrative “tracers”; validated compliance; reviewed a variety of performance indicators; observed clinical processes at the point of care; reviewed selected documentation; and interviewed physicians, nurses, administrators, volunteers, allied health members, support staff, patients and their families to review our practices. The accreditation process consists of four phases: Self-Assessment From September 2008 to February 2009, staff, physicians, volunteers and the Board participated in a number of surveys/questionnaires. They assessed our strengths and weaknesses in key areas, such as patient safety, work life balance, clinical performance, governance performance and administrative support. Accreditation Canada reviewed the survey results, and created a quality performance roadmap, which used red, yellow and green flags to rate how well the hospital is meeting the national standards. The better a hospital is performing, the more green flags its roadmap receives. The roadmap gives guidance on the areas of focus which RVHS needs to improve. Action Plans Clinical Excellence teams were formed, and reviewed the quality performance roadmap to determine how to address the yellow and red flags. From March to April 2009, these teams developed action plans to guide our quality improvement journey. Implementing Action Plans Transforming red flags into green ones was the goal of the action plan stage. The action plans created covered the 32 required organizational practices. Preparing all staff, physicians and volunteers for Accreditation was no easy task. Clinical Excellence teams were very creative by developing activities and deliverables based on the action plans. One particularly effective event was the Passport to Patient Safety event, held from June 1 – 3, 2009 at both hospital campuses. Over 1,000 staff, physicians and volunteers turned out in high numbers for the three-day event, which provided awareness and education in key patient care and patient safety areas. The content presented at the Passport to Patient Safety event was posted on the employee intranet site, ensuring that members of the RVHS community who could not attend in person could still access this information. Banners, posters and flashcards helped to arm staff with knowledge and improve their knowledge. To help better prepare staff,“ practice runs” were also conducted. Executive team members simulated the activities of Accreditation Canada surveyors, and visited different work areas. Mock interviews helped to familiarize staff with the types of questions and information that surveyors were looking for, with respect to the national standards for quality care. We’re happy to report that RVHS received a full three-year accreditation. Some of what especially impressed the surveyors included: > The hospital-wide consultations that produced the RVHS Strategic Plan, and how prominently the Strategic Plan-On-A-Page was posted at both hospital campuses; > The implementation of Lean, and how various internal strategies have brought teams together to create improvements; > Innovative hospital-wide initiatives such as the Passport to Patient Safety event and its concise, easy-to-understand “passports” with key patient safety points; > The strong communication between the RVHS Board of Directors, RVHS President & CEO Rik Ganderton, and medical advisory leadership; > Quality of internal communications tools, including the e-Echo and Echo newsletters; > Regular Town Hall meetings, which are well attended by all levels of RVHS staff. A debriefing session was held after the survey. Organizers used this experience and the feedback to maintain the momentum that took place in preparation and during the Accreditation survey. As an organization, preparing for the Accreditation process helped to bring staff, physicians and volunteers together to achieve a common goal. The Passport to Patient Safety event was one of the ways that Rouge Valley implemented the changes surveyors required for the Accreditation process. Staff, physicians and volunteers were provided with additional educational training on patient safety issues.‘Passports’ with easy to remember tips were created as reference tools. 4 Rouge Valley Health System | Counting The Ways 5 RVHS_AR09_v4:Layout 1 2/23/10 9:06 AM Page 6 Rouge Valley’s Programs and Services As an acute care, community hospital, Rouge Valley Health System (RVHS) offers many important health care services. Our core service is emergency care, which we offer 24 hours a day, every day of the week. We also offer a wide range of other key programs and services. Serving the communities of east Toronto (Scarborough), west Durham (Ajax, Pickering and Whitby) and more, our programs and services deliver health care close to home for patients throughout the Rouge Valley area. 24/7/365 Emergency Care Rouge Valley’s emergency departments are supported by other programs and services, as well as a multi-disciplinary team of nurses, physicians and specialists, who combine to provide help, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. In Fall 2009, we opened an all-new emergency department at our Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital campus as part of our major redevelopment effort to meet the growing needs of west Durham. Cardiac Care Rouge Valley’s cardiac care program has been designated by the Central East Local Health Integration Network (CE LHIN) to fulfill a regional role in the 401 corridor, and is considered one of the best of any community hospitals in Ontario. We have highlighted this program in our 2009 annual report. Turn to page 8 to learn more about cardiac care at RVHS. Mental Health Care Our mental health program is one of our centres of excellence. A diverse range of services—including emergency crisis and outpatient care, adult and child/adolescent inpatient care, and medical/psychiatric inpatient care—can be accessed from both hospital campuses. Our mental health service model reflects the most innovative best practices in health care. Medical Care Rouge Valley’s medicine program gives patients timely access to treatment for serious medical conditions, ranging from pneumonia and cancer to diabetes and Crohn’s disease. We are committed to excellence in patient care, and have made quality service and patient safety priorities at our hospital. Surgery Rouge Valley’s surgical departments lead the way in less invasive surgeries, with more than 80 per cent of all procedures allowing patients to go home the same day. Our surgical program reflects a range of expertise from general surgery to many subspecialties. Women’s and Children’s Health Services Through Rouge Valley’s Women’s and Children’s Health program, many specialty services are available to mothers in labour, newborns, children and adolescents. This includes outpatient programs and inpatient care at both hospital campuses. Our Birthing and Newborn Centre at Rouge Valley Centenary has an Advanced Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), which serves as an important resource for caring for high-risk mothers and newborns. Our Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital campus has two NICU beds going into place. Continuing Care and Rehabilitation At Rouge Valley, we offer a comprehensive array of services for patients who have completed their acute care hospital stay.Together, our teams work to provide customized treatment designed to meet the individual care needs of our patients. Diagnostic Imaging and Clinical Support Services Rouge Valley’s pharmacies, laboratories, diagnostic imaging services and allied health professionals help assess, diagnose and treat both inpatients and outpatients. Also supporting the ongoing care that happens in our clinical areas are social workers, discharge planners, dieticians, and chaplaincy services, as well as security, facilities and support services staff. The delivery of our programs and services is not a job that we do alone. In fact, Rouge Valley works in partnership with our community members, other hospitals and health care organizations, the CE LHIN and the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care to meet the health care needs of our growing communities.Together, we are working to provide our patients and their families with the best health care experience. 6 Counting The Ways | Rouge Valley Health System Foundation RVHS_AR09_v4:Layout 1 2/23/10 9:06 AM Page 7 Our New Doctors Your gifts count, Dr. Mohamed Abounaja, Emergency (RVHS) Dr. Nazar Almakki, Intensive Care Unit (RVHS) Dr. Abdelbaset Belhaj, Medical Director, Infection Prevention & Control (RVHS) Dr. Sarah Bunston, General Practice (RVC) Dr. Michael Chang, Urology (RVAP) Dr. Rina Daskalopoulos, General Practice (RVAP) Dr. Marijana Drandic, Psychiatry (RVAP) Dr. Allan Eckhaus, Plastic Surgery (RVAP) Dr. Michael Fung, General Practice (RVAP) Dr. Elizabeth Glowczewski-Park, General Practice (RVC) Dr. Farrukh Khan, Medical Director, Diabetes Education (RVHS) Dr. Michael Leveridge, Urology (RVC) Dr. Gillian Nesbitt, Cardiac Care (RVHS) Dr. Nosa Omoruyi, Psychiatry (RVAP) Dr. Osama Shabash, Emergency (RVAP) Dr. Mruna Shah, General Practice (RVAP) Dr. Malek Shawesh, Internal Medicine (RVAP) Dr. Leo Sin, Emergency (RVHS) Dr. Raymond Yan, Cardiac Care (RVHS) funding 38 different kinds of equipment purchases Baby weight scales Bronchoscope Cardiac treadmill Carroll bed Chemo clinic lounge furniture Clinical care recliners Digital thermometers ECG machines Elliptical machine Gamma camera Geri chairs Hand sanitizing station Hi low bed Ice machine Intraortic balloon pump IV fridge and expanded admixture expansion pump Lumex beds Medication cart NICU bassinet NICU isolette Nu-step exerciser Pillows Portable ultrasound machine Procedure chair Prostate biopsy gun Pulse oximeters Recumbent stepper Refrigerators Sentinel node biopsy equipment Syringe pumps Transport incubator Transport stretcher Upright bike Ventilator Vital signs monitors Warming cabinet Weight scales Wheelchairs Hospital year by the numbers 2009 RVC RVAP RVHS 280 117 397 EMERGENCY VISITS 52,770 48,444 101,214 ADMISSIONS 16,294 7,939 24,233 3,331 1,522 4,853 BEDS OPERATING ROOM INPATIENTS OPERATING ROOM OUTPATIENTS 11,865 5,210 17,075 DAY/NIGHT CLINIC VISITS 39,701 15,096 54,797 OTHER CLINIC VISITS 69,387 39,403 108,790 BIRTHS 2,272 1,480 3,752 CARDIAC CATHETERIZATION 3,540 N/A 3,540 240 N/A 240 1,142 N/A 1,142 93 51 144 PACEMAKER IMPLANTS ANGIOPLASTY HIP REPLACEMENTS 284 113 397 CATARACTS 1,553 N/A 1,553 MRI SCANS 9,372 N/A 9,372 887 343 1,230 VOLUNTEERS 386 194 580 PROPERTY SIZE (ACRES) 23.4 26 49.4 KNEE REPLACEMENTS CANCER SURGERIES 38 Rouge Valley Health System | Counting The Ways N/A = Not Applicable 7 RVHS_AR09_v4:Layout 1 2/23/10 9:06 AM Page 8 Leaders in Cardiac Care R ouge Valley Health System has been designated by the province’s Central East Local Health Integration Network (CE LHIN) as a regional centre for cardiac care in the 401 corridor. The cardiac care program is not only a vital part of our hospital and surrounding communities, it also plays a specialized role in the broader Scarborough/Durham region. Ontario’s Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care requires all 14 of the province’s Local Health Integration Networks to establish regional cardiac centres for their jurisdictions. In February 2009, the CE LHIN designated Rouge Valley’s cardiac care program as the cardiac centre in this area. As a regional cardiac care centre, our program has a full service approach to the delivery of care. Cardiac patients usually require several different points of ongoing care in order to successfully diagnose, treat and manage their cardiac disease or condition. Working with the cardiac programs at other hospitals and health care sites in the area, we ensure that patients have access to excellent cardiac services without having to leave the area. 8 Some cardiac services, such as diagnostic tests and cardiac rehabilitation, are delivered at the community level by the local cardiac programs. Rouge Valley offers these services for our own local communities of Scarborough,Pickering, Ajax and Whitby. Other cardiac services, such as coronary angioplasty, are more resourceintensive and have better outcomes when done in higher volumes. These services have been centralized at Rouge Valley, and are available to cardiac patients across the area so that they can get the care they need close to home. Our cardiac care services can be accessed through both hospital campuses—Rouge Valley Centenary, and Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering. Below lists the complete range of cardiac services that we offer. Cardiac diagnostics > Stress testing > Echo cardiography > Holter monitoring > Event recording > Ambulatory blood pressure > Nuclear cardiology Cardiac catheterization > Coronary angiography > Coronary angioplasty (also known Counting The Ways | Rouge Valley Health System Foundation 90 CARDIAC CARE IN ACTION! Cardiac rehab keeps patients on track towards heart healthy lifestyles. as percutaneous coronary intervention or PCI) Arrhythmia management > Pacemaker insertion > Internal cardiac defibrillator (ICD) > Electrophysiological studies > Ablation therapy > Arrhythmia patient management Cardiac rehabilitation and education > Six-month weekly exercise program > Education program > Individualized exercise assessment, prescription and risk-factor profile Other cardiac services > Emergency cardiac care > Inpatient cardiac care > Cardiology consultation Additionally, in the last year, Rouge Valley has participated with the Toronto Heart Attack Collaborative to pilot a new initiative called Code STEMI (segment (ST) elevation myocardial infarction).Through this initiative, unstable heart attack patients from the east Toronto area are brought directly to the catheterization lab at Rouge Valley Centenary hospital campus, where they are given the specialized care they need—all within a crucial 90-minute window. The pilot demonstrated how effective this initiative can be in saving lives. Simply put, the sooner a percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is provided by our cardiac care program, the better a patient’s chance of surviving a heart attack. Furthermore, Code STEMI has helped to move patients out of the emergency department more quickly and get them home much sooner. In the pilot, patients’ length of stay in an emergency department was reduced by an average of seven hours, and their average length of stay in hospital was reduced by two days. We are very pleased to have received approval and funding by the CE LHIN to continue this initiative, which we will next look to extend into Durham Region. The Rouge Valley cardiac care program has truly grown in the last year to better meet the needs of patients throughout the region. We have improved our wait times, enhanced or services, expanded our cardiac team with the addition of two new cardiologists, and strengthened our commitment to quality service and patient care. We look forward to continuing to provide leadership in the delivery of excellent cardiac care. RVHS_AR09_v4:Layout 1 2/23/10 9:06 AM Page 9 Growing with the community A fter years of planning, fundraising and construction, the newly-expanded emergency department officially opened at Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering (RVAP) hospital campus on November 30, 2009. The opening of the emergency department represents the first major completed phase of the RVAP Redevelopment project. This new emergency department will provide space for an anticipated 60,000 patient visits a year; staff and physicians had been caring for more than 50,000 patients a year in a space designed for 20,000. Ambulances will access the emergency department by a dedicated road through a new four-bay covered entrance. Also open to the public is the new fracture clinic and portions of the new diagnostic imaging department. Included in RVAP’s recent redevelopment initiatives are the trauma room, decontamination room, and new equipment such as the high-tech 256-image CT scanner. On November 20 and 21, 2009, the community was treated to a sneak peek of the newly-expanded emergency department. Over the course of two days, local politicians, business owners, EMS, police, firefighters, media, staff, physicians, volunteers and major gift donors celebrated the opening of the redevelopment project with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and hundreds of local residents toured the new space during a public open house to get a first-hand look at the new state-of-the-art facility. On both days, guests were treated to tours by emergency department staff and Auxiliary volunteers, retired staff, and members of the Patron’s Council. Rouge Valley is committed to being the best at what we do for our patients. The new emergency department and the rest of our redevelopment is a great start toward meeting the current needs of our growing west Durham community. The full project is expected to be complete in the fall of 2010.The entire expansion will mean about 140,000 square feet of new and renovated space for emergency and related services. Unlike our former emergency department, our new space allows for future growth as well as the opportunity to introduce innovations that will give our patients the time they need to improve the condition that brought them to us,” explains Dr. Gary Mann, site chief of emergency at RVAP, third from left in photo. For two months, 14 RBC Royal Bank branches across Scarborough, Ajax and Pickering fundraised for the “Give from the Heart to Save a Heart” campaign, which included a lottery, in-branch fundraising and a Commercial Financial Services sponsorship appeal. The campaign officially closed with a staff celebration picnic, a fundraising hula hoop event, drawing of the lottery winners and a cheque presentation. Attendees included (L-R) Dr. Paul Galiwango, RVHS cardiac physician; Mike Dignam, RBC branch manager; Lisa Gallacher, RBC’s Regional Vice President for Scarborough/Pickering/Ajax; Jack Ungar, Senior Commercial Lender with RBC and co-chair of the campaign; and Dr. Joe Ricci, Program Chief, RVHS Cardiac Care Program. An Electrocardiogram is the most commonly performed cardiac test; it is a valuable screening tool for a variety of cardiac abnormalities, and often rules out heart attacks or diagnoses lethal arrhythmia. ECGs are performed on many patients in the hospital in the Cardiac Diagnostics Service, on the in-patient units and in the Emergency Departments. ECGs are also performed on every patient over 50 years of age who is admitted for elective surgery. This state-of-the-art equipment has 12 leads, placed on the patient’s body, ensuring exact measurements. Thanks to the generosity of the Mayor of Pickering, sponsors and guests who supported dreams in a healthy community by attending the 4th Annual Mayor’s Gala in November 2008, the Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering (RVAP) labour and delivery unit received this state-of-the-art equipment. A gift celebration was held on June 25, 2009, with City of Pickering Mayor Dave Ryan, the Gala Committee and the Gala sponsors to demonstrate this urgently-needed equipment. On hand to personally thank the donors for this $49,000 piece of equipment was Susan Fyfe, Rouge Valley Health System’s program director for women’s and children’s health programs, and staff from the department who are so excited to once again have this life-saving piece of equipment. Almost 1,600 babies are delivered at RVAP every year, but babies born under 34 weeks must be transferred to a hospital that specializes in preemies. A transport incubator is used when a premature or low-birth weight baby must be relocated; it is like a self-contained neonatal intensive care unit on wheels. It maintains the infant in an environment of controlled temperature, humidity, and oxygen concentration. The apparatus is made of a clear plastic material and has a large door and portholes for easy access to the infant with a minimum of heat and oxygen loss. An internal mechanism constantly monitors the infant’s temperature and controls the heat within the unit. Speed is of the essence, and this light-weight, portable equipment will provide immediate care for some of our newest family members in west Durham. 34 Portable incubator transports west Durham preemies Rouge Valley Health System | Counting The Ways 13 RVHS_AR09_v4:Layout 1 2/23/10 9:07 AM Page 14 $2,500-$4,999 continued Sonia Peczeniuk Rexall Foundation Rotary Club of Pickering Royal Canadian Legion Branch #614 Safetech Environmental Limited Stantec Consulting Limited TD Bank/Canada Trust Employees’ Charitable Donations Fund University of Toronto, Scarborough Campus The Ward Family Reverend Wallace and Grace Whyte $1,000–$2,499 To honour a beloved anesthetist who had passed away, the Dr. Craig Jones Memorial Golf Tournament fundraising event was created by Dr. Jon Hummel. The inaugural event, held on June 29, 2009, raised $34,000 to purchase surgical and orthopaedic equipment for Rouge Valley Centenary. 34 756483 ONT. On June 2, 2009, participating McDonald’s restaurants in Scarborough presented a cheque for $40,000 to Rouge Valley Health System Foundation in support of purchasing a portable ultrasound machine for Rouge Valley Centenary’s (RVC) Emergency Department. Thrilled with the opportunity to be a part of a life-saving team for their local hospital were (L-R) McDonald’s Restaurant Owner/Operators Terry Brazill, Deborah Feaver, John Pang, Dale Bartlett and Terri Toms. They presented the cheque to Dr. K.C. Moran, RVC Emergency Site Chief, who now uses the machine and sees first-hand its cascading time-saving effects. The donated funds were raised by 23 Scarborough-area McDonald’s restaurants via their “Save Time, Save Lives”campaign, including participation in the 16th McHappy Day, a national fundraiser held in more than 1,400 McDonald’s restaurants across Canada. In addition, these restaurants held fundraising events leading up to McHappy Day to lend additional support, including coin collections at Drive Thru locations, school penny drives and the sale of various items in store. This vital piece of equipment saves time diagnosing specific and potentially life-threatening ailments in a patient brought in to the Emergency Department. The portable ultrasound machine can instantly determine heart muscle activity, show fluid around the heart, detect abdominal aortic aneurysms, find problematic ectopic pregnancy or determine internal bleeding. This portable ultra- sound system is ready to use within 20 seconds of booting it up. Every single Emergency patient will benefit from this donation. The equipment can be used on men, women and children alike and, even if a patient doesn’t require an ultrasound, faster diagnoses enables improved patient flow and reduced wait times for all. 20 Improving emergency patient care and outcomes Rouge Valley Health System | Counting The Ways 15 RVHS_AR09_v4:Layout 1 2/23/10 9:07 AM Page 16 $1,000-$2,499 continued Walker, Head - Barristers & Solicitors Wal-Mart Canada Corp. On April 2, 2009, we celebrated the gift, the second piece of equipment purchased with the Town’s four-year, $250,000 pledge to support the Surgery Department. Representing the Town of Ajax at the gift celebration were (L-R) Councillor Joanne Dies, Mayor Steve Parish and Councillor Colleen Jordan. “The Town of Ajax is pleased to support the Rouge Valley Health System, and their commitment to purchase leading-edge medical equipment,” said Mayor Parish.“High quality medical care is important to our community, and it’s purchases such as these that will provide Ajax residents with the health care they require and deserve.” Sentinel Node Biopsy Equipment is cancer staging technology that is crucial for patient care, and utilizes minimally-invasive surgery. Cancer cells may appear first in the sentinel node before spreading to other lymph nodes and other places in the body. By mapping the Sentinel Lymph Nodes using dyes and radioactive substances, medical staff can identify the first lymph node to which cancer is likely to spread from the primary tumour. Standard lymph node removal involves surgery to remove most of the lymph nodes in the axilla. But by using Sentinel Lymph Node biopsies, only one or a few sentinel nodes are removed. A Sentinel Lymph Node biopsy may be done on an outpatient basis or require only a short stay in the hospital. By putting this new equipment into use, Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hopes to increase the early detection of this disease for ideal cancer care. 4 Minimally-invasive procedure requires only two hours and 4 needles Rouge Valley Health System | Counting The Ways 17 RVHS_AR09_v4:Layout 1 2/23/10 9:07 AM Page 18 $500-$999 continued Generously sponsored by Sears Scarborough Town Centre, the Foundation’s inaugural Fashion Show rocked the runway on November 15, 2009, showcasing style trends and supporting Rouge Valley Centenary. When the Golf Classic Committee decided that proceeds from the August 6, 2009 tournament would fund vital signs monitors for RVC, a challenge was also put to Foundation board members and hospital executive staff by Peter Lobraico to help purchase even more $5,000 machines. Omega CEO & President Bharat Hansraj, who is also a Foundation Board member, asked his staff at Omega Direct Response Inc. to direct their annual fundraising activity to securing a much-needed vital signs monitor for RVC.They held a fun-filled and very successful cosmic bowling tournament on July 31, 2009, that put them over the top in their two-month campaign to raise $5,000. Foundation Board member Michael Claener also rose to the challenge. Michael, along with Jill and Rik Ganderton and Sonia Peczeniuk, helped purchase two monitors now allocated to the RVC 5th floor surgical unit. Others who helped purchase monitors for the surgical unit were Vince Lobraico, John and Louise Wiersma, Chad and Susan Hanna and Cashpoint Foreign Exchange. Thanks to these donors, and the sponsors and participants involved in the Golf Classic, the tournament and challenge delivered a total of 8 machines. Basic measurements of a patient’s vital signs are one of the most frequently performed procedures in our hospitals. And having the right equipment to get quick, accurate results is important. A vital signs monitor is a noninvasive blood pressure monitor that allows for quick and accurate temperature readings, and provides a pulse oximetry and oxidation saturation indicator. This portable monitor helps nursing staff enhance productivity and allows them to easily obtain important information they need, so they may spend more time with patients and less time with the equipment. These donated vital signs monitors will be used to monitor patients’ heart rates, blood pressure and oxygen saturation. Nurses on the 5th floor, where the equipment will be used, say the new additions are a significant improvement over the manual machines they had been using. As a result, these donations will provide health care workers with faster, more accurate vital signs results. With more vital signs monitors, Rouge Valley staff can make diagnoses more quickly, detect life-threatening changes sooner, monitor patients more frequently and accurately, and provide the early intervention that is key to saving lives. 5 Monitoring patients vital to nursing staff Rouge Valley Health System | Counting The Ways 19 RVHS_AR09_v4:Layout 1 2/23/10 9:07 AM Page 20 $250-$499 continued Roland Michener Public School raised $750 to purchase a digital thermometer for the Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering paediatrics department. It was a record year, with participation from a total of 24 stores in Scarborough, Ajax, Pickering and Whitby. Champions from Shoppers Drug Mart in this successful corporate partnership were Derrick Hollett, Vice President of Operations, Ontario; Sandra Bragagnolo, District Manager; Ome Jamal, Lead Associate-Owner; and Ajax pharmacist/owner Priscilla Luna. In Scarborough and surrounding areas, an astounding $50,000 was raised for the Birthing and Newborn Centre located at Rouge Valley Centenary hospital. In Ajax, Pickering and Whitby, more than $9,000 was raised for maternal and newborn programs and services at Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital. The tiniest members of the community are welcomed each day at Rouge Valley. “The health of east Toronto and west Durham women and their families is a high priority,” said Natalie Bubela, VP Programs, Rouge Valley Health System.“The money raised by local Shoppers Drug Mart stores during the Tree of Life campaign provides Rouge Valley Health System with much needed funds to support important women’s health programs.” The Birthing and Newborn Centre is a state-of-the-art facility providing expectant families with a comfortable, home-like environment for low-risk, uncomplicated births, while providing all the equipment and expertise needed to handle more complicated high-risk deliveries. Proceeds from the Scarborough-area Tree of Life campaign funded a new education centre located in the heart of this new hospital wing. Proceeds from the Durham-area Tree of Life campaign equipped the maternal and newborn programs and services at Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering with 8 brand-new items, including sleeper chairs, wheelchairs, shower chairs, pulse oximeters and digital thermometers. Some babies have more complications than others when they are born. They could be premature, sick or experiencing life-threatening conditions related to their tiny hearts or lungs. Newborns are cared for in these special units so that caregivers can give them the best that technology has to offer in support of their high level of hands-on human touch care. Parents can easily be with their newborns in the NICU pods, allowing for early bonding to occur. Isolettes provide a sterile, controlled warm environment for newborns who cannot maintain their own body temperature. These units can also be fitted with phototherapy lights to treat jaundice. In times like these, hand sanitizers play a very important role in hospitals, not just for physicians and staff, but for patients and their families who enter the facility. “It’s important to remind people to keep their hands clean,” says Tricia Root, director, infection prevention and control at Rouge Valley Health System (RVHS).“When done correctly, hand-washing or hand-sanitizing can be one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of communicable diseases like the flu. This new station will remind everyone entering the department to use hand sanitizer to help prevent the spread of illness.” When you’re unable to wash your hands with soap and water, rubbing your hands vigorously together and scrubbing all surfaces with hand sanitizer for at least 15 seconds can help stop the spread of illness-causing germs. 15 Clean hands limit the spread of illness, especially in a busy ER Rouge Valley Health System | Counting The Ways 25 RVHS_AR09_v4:Layout 1 2/23/10 9:07 AM Page 26 Volunteering At Rouge Valley Health System Volunteers play an integral role in the day-to-day operation of our hospitals. In everything they do, these dedicated volunteers support many departments within both hospital campuses. They tirelessly raise funds through a variety of events, lotteries, raffles and gift shops. The Auxiliary to the Ajax and Pickering Health Centre The Auxiliary to the Ajax and Pickering Health Centre, comprised of 191 adult and 50 student volunteers, works hard every day fundraising, keeping the public informed and at ease while in the hospital, and keeping the existing Auxiliary members educated and informed. At the end of November 2009, the Auxiliary members were thrilled to partake in the two-day celebration for the completion of Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering’s brand-new, state-of-the-art Emergency Department. Volunteers were on hand to proudly showcase the amazing space to their fellow community members. The Auxiliary held a Wine Tasting fundraiser on October 25, 2009. Over 100 guests bought tickets to sample six sumptuous wines with special guest sommelier Bruno Cantieni. Proceeds supported their $1,000,000 pledge towards the new Women’s Imaging Centre, part of RVAP’s Redevelopment project. Congratulations to the six Auxiliary members who were awarded the 2009 Ontario Volunteer Service Award; they had a combined total of over 95 years of service! Sadly, Margaret Montgomery passed away on August 18, 2009, at the age of 94. A fixture among the Auxiliary, she is greatly missed. She called Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital her second home, and one of her greatest joys was socializing with patients and other Auxiliary members. Rouge Valley Centenary Volunteer Services The volunteers of Rouge Valley Centenary have historically embraced progressive core values to support the hospital and provide a quality volunteer experience for community members. The Volunteer Services department is comprised of 260 adult and 126 youth volunteers, two professional staff and one formal outreach community partner. A milestone happened in March 2009 when Volunteer Services made the final payment on their $1,000,000 pledge towards the newly-opened Birthing and Newborn Centre. This remarkable gift, completed a year ahead of schedule, made them the largest donor to the facility. The Foundation held a celebratory luncheon and a special photo opportunity outside the building with the members on Wednesday, April 22, 2009. In December 2009, Volunteer Services continued their long history of supporting equipment needs at Rouge Valley Centenary with a $20,000 donation to purchase a Glidescope for the Emergency Department. The equipment enables non-invasive airways to be established quickly for patients who are having difficulty or have stopped breathing. At the 2009 AGM, Volunteer Services members Eileen Mason and Ethel Niewolski were recognized for their time, talents and commitment to Rouge Valley Health System with a Patrons’ Council Award. Both Eileen and Ethel have been volunteering at Centenary before the doors opened on July 1, 1967. $1,000,000 26 Counting The Ways | Rouge Valley Health System Foundation RVHS_AR09_v4:Layout 1 2/23/10 9:07 AM Page 27 Donation options to meet your needs Enhancing care in our community is the mission of the Rouge Valley Health System Foundation, and it is a role we take very seriously.
