Faithful Chronicles
By Father Frank D. Almade
How many of you have ever made a
spiritual retreat? …I thought so. Not
many. I’m sorry to hear that. How
many of you have ever been invited
to make a spiritual retreat? …Even
fewer, I’ll bet. Yet one of the great
gifts our Catholic faith has is to take
time off from the ordinary busy-ness
of life to pray.
Jesus in the gospels gives us good
examples of retreating from “the
world” to pray. St. Mark writes:
“Very early in the morning, while it
was still dark, Jesus got up, left the
house and went off to a solitary place,
where he prayed.” (1:35) Sometimes
Jesus would spend an entire night in
retreat: “In those days he departed to
the mountain to pray, and he spent
the night in prayer to God.” (Luke
6:12) Jesus also invited his dearest
friends to join him in retreating:
“The apostles gathered together with
Jesus and reported all they had done
and taught. He said to them, ‘Come
away by yourselves to a deserted place
and rest a while.’ People were coming
and going in great numbers, and they
had no opportunity even to eat. So
they went off in the boat by themselves to a deserted place.” (Mark
6:30-32)
All clerics are required by canon
The Sixth Sunday of Easter
law to make an annual retreat, usually of five days duration. Some priests
attend a “preached” retreat. A spiritual director, usually a wise and older
priest, sometimes a seminary professor or retired bishop, offers three or
four 45 minute reflections daily for
the retreatants. The priests then reflect on the content of these reflections during the days of the retreat.
While this is good, I have found
more richness in a silent, directed
retreat. In this model, usually based
on the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola (1491-1556), all retreatants (and spiritual directors and
staff) keep total silence on the
grounds of the retreat house. No talking in the hallways, no chit-chat on
the grounds or at meals, no TV or
radio or internet. This profound silence helps the retreatant to focus
mind and heart on prayer and contemplation. Each retreatant also
meets with a spiritual director once a
day. In these personal conversations,
the director listens to how God is
speaking (or not speaking!) to the
retreatant. The director will offer one
or two short biblical passages for the
retreatant to intensely reflect on. As I
was taught this model, retreatants
pray at least four one-hour periods of
personal prayer, in addition to attending daily Mass and time for adoration before the Blessed Sacrament.
Summerfest Takes A Holiday in 2014
The Mary, Mother of Hope Parish committee which guides Easterfest and Summerfest met recently. The topic discussed was, should MMOH parish plan another
Summerfest? The problem is that the city of New Castle and the Hoyt Center are
combining the annual Fireworks Festival with the Arts Fest. This unified Arts and
Fireworks Festival is changing location, to the Cascade Riverplex, at the corner of
East Washington and East Streets. This new location is many blocks from North
Beaver Street and the MMOH pastoral center. After extensive discussion, the committee felt that few people would walk those many blocks to come to Summerfest. Therefore the committee decided (and Father Almade approved) that Summerfest will be "on holiday" for one year. Over the winter the committee will look at
bringing back Summerfest for 2015. In the meantime the committee will work on
planning alternative fundraising events in 2014 for MMOH parish.
All Parish Offices will be closed on Monday, May 26th, for the
Memorial Day National Holiday.
The rest of the day might include
walking in a park, spiritual reading,
and relaxation.
Retreats are not just for priests. Lay
folk, religious sisters and brothers,
deacons, clergy and parishioners
from other Christian denominations,
attend retreats in Catholic retreat
houses all over the globe. All benefit
from “time away,” to be surprised by
the Holy Spirit in their own spiritual
journey. We have several fine retreat
houses in our diocese used by laity
and priests.
This week I’ll be away from the
parishes on retreat. I’ll be making a
silent, directed retreat, at the Eastern
Point Jesuit Retreat House, in
Gloucester, Massachusetts.
(www.easternpoint.org) This very
beautiful campus sits on the rocky
shore of the Atlantic Ocean, about
an hour’s drive north of Boston. I
love the profound silence, and the
rugged grandeur of Eastern Point. I
look forward to “renewing my ongoing conversation” with God who
gives me life, love, and purpose.
Please know that I will pray for all
parishioners, my brother priests, our
dedicated staff members, and all in
Lawrence County who may be searching to experience the love Jesus has
for all people.

The Catholic Community in New Castle
Jesus tells us: “If you love me, you will keep my commandments...Whoever loves me will be loved by my
Father and I will love him and reveal myself to him.”
This is today’s Gospel and Jesus’ word to us. Through
your continued generosity, the St. Vincent de Paul Society has brought much love and compassion to so many
families in our parishes and communities by providing
help with rent, food, utilities and fuel. We are very
grateful for the support you have given for so many
years. Our four parish conferences sincerely thank you
for helping us help God’s children.
Donation Boxes for the St. Vincent de Paul Society
Clothing Drive (new & gently used clothes, shoes,
coats & belts) are located in the parking lots of both St.
Vincent de Paul and St. Joseph the Worker parishes.
Thank you for your constant generosity—proceeds benefit our mission to the needy in our community.
The St. Vitus Food Pantry needs volunteers on the second Saturday of each
month to help with set-up and distribution of food. Please call 724-652-3422 if
you can lend a hand.
The Food Pantry at St. Joseph the Worker is
open the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of each month,
12:00 Noon to 1:00 PM. Helpers and donations
of food are very welcome at any time.
Volunteers Needed! Together with First Presbyterian
Church our four parishes are seeking volunteers to help
serve lunch to needy children during the summer
months. Whether you’d like to volunteer for one week
this summer or a few days here and there we can use
your help! Beginning Monday, June 9th, lunch will be
served Monday—Friday from 11:30 AM—12:30 PM at
the Grant Street Community Center. The food will be
prepared for us and simply requires us picking up the
food, serving it, and cleaning up. A 2-hour training session for safe food handling is provided and at least one
volunteer per day must complete the training. Please
consider giving a few hours this summer to help our
neighbors in need. For more information or to volunteer, please call Fr. Nick at (724) 652-3422.
Prevent Child Abuse
If you or a loved one were harmed in any way by a Catholic
priest or employee of a Catholic church at any time, please
contact the Diocese of Pittsburgh's Victim's Assistance Hotline at 1-888-808-1235. You may also call the Common-
wealth of Pennsylvania's Abuse Hotline at 1-800-9320313. The Catholic Church is committed to address every
instance of child abuse, and to prevent this in the future. You
need not carry this burden alone.

Chris & Zach to be Ordained Deacons!
Chris Mannerino and Zach Galiyas, our seminarians for the past few years, have been
called by Bishop Zubik to be ordained as Deacons, the last step before priesthood. We
really want to support them on this special day and have organized for a motor coach to
travel to Saint Paul Cathedral for the Ordination Mass on Saturday, June 14, 2014. The
coach will leave from Saint Joseph the Worker at 8:00 AM for the 10:00 AM Mass and
will return by 2:30 PM. Cost is $12 per person and includes a boxed lunch on the way back to New Castle. There are only
55 seats available and we hope to fill them all! Please call Rosemary at (724)658-1683 to reserve your spot or for more information. Join us as we witness Chris and Zach being filled with the Holy Spirit to serve the Church as deacons!
