Shrine Herald - National Shrine of the Little Flower
www.shrinechurch.com Shrine Herald Royal Oak, MI “We proclaim Jesus as Lord and ourselves as servants for His sake.” July 29, 2012 Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Bearings Notes from Monsignor Easton Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship (Conclusion) The following excerpt is the conclusion of a document published by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. It is not easy reading. However, I believe it is essential reading as we form our opinions and exercise our right to vote responsibly. Option for the Poor and Vulnerable While the common good embraces all, those who are in greatest need deserve preferential concern. A moral test for society is how we treat the weakest among us—the unborn, those dealing with disabilities or terminal illness, the poor and marginalized. Dignity of Work and the Rights of Workers The economy must serve people, not the other way around. Economic justice calls for decent work at fair, living wages, opportunities for legal status for immigrant workers, and the opportunity for all people to work together for the common good through their work, ownership, enterprise, investment, participation in unions, and other forms of economic activity. Solidarity We are one human family, whatever our national, racial, ethnic, economic, and ideological differences. Our Catholic commitment to solidarity requires that we pursue justice, eliminate racism, end human trafficking, protect human rights, seek peace, and avoid the use of force except as a necessary last resort. Sharing Christ in and through the Church GOAL: $204,640 Caring for God’s Creation TOTAL PLEDGES: $161,532 Care for the earth is a duty of our Catholic faith. We all are called to be careful stewards of God’s creation and to ensure a safe and hospitable environment for vulnerable human beings now and in the future. % OF GOAL: 79% continued on page 3 ... # OF COMMITMENTS: 817 Page 2 Shrine Herald National Shrine of the Little Flower Ride Needed for Day-Student to U of M, Ann Arbor Please pray for the sick of our parish Marilyn Antwis Baheja Bedros Eugene Bienkowski Jack Brady Garrett Burtwell Elsa Castagneto Kathryn Ross Clark Kathie Cobbledick Deanna Conway Carl Culver Cecelia Flood Donald Holden Meghan Malley Khalida Majim Francesca McMally Christina Nardone Jackie Panetta Anthony Rosso Deanna Swincicki Barney Tatomir Riley Tenbusch Richard W. To My National Shrine Friends, I wish I could thank each of you personally for attending my retirement reception hosted by the National Shrine Ladies Guild on Sunday, July 22. I am overwhelmed by your generous gifts of cards, Masses, prayers, good wishes and the monetary gifts enclosed with your cards. I have decided to send all the enclosed monetary gifts to the Sisters of Charity Retirement Fund. The Sisters deeply appreciate donations toward this fund. I will be supported by this fund during my years of retirement at Mount St. Joseph. I also want to thank the members of the National Shrine Ladies Guild who so generously supported the Sister of Charity Retirement Fund and turned the National Shrine Conference Center into a beautiful reception. Everyone enjoyed the home made cookies and cakes, fresh fruit and punch. The beautiful arrangements of flowers on the tables added to the festive atmosphere. Please be assured of my prayers for you and your families as we continue on our journey of life. May you be blessed a 100 fold for your generous and loving kindness to me and the many other Sisters of Charity who taught in Shrine Schools and ministered to people of the National Shrine Parish Community. God Bless and Love you, Sister Mary Alicia Bomya, S.C. Conclusion In light of Catholic teaching, as bishops we vigorously repeat our call for a renewed politics that focuses on moral principles, the defense of life, the needs of the weak, and the pursuit of the common good. This kind of political participation respects the social teaching of our Church and the best traditions of our nation. Dream Cruise Party It hardly seems possible, but the parish Dream Cruise Party is less than 3 weeks away. "Jesus gave Himself in the Eucharist because He knows that we need Him. Before multiplying the loaves and fishes, He looked at the multitude following Him and exclaimed:' I have compassion on the crowd, because they have been with Me now three days, and have nothing to eat; and I am unwilling to send them away hungry, lest they faint on the way.' He understands that our path through life also is long. Besides bodily fatigue, we are beset by many other difficulties and dangers. Left to our own resources, we will not reach the end of the journey safely. And so He remains with us, sustaining us as food for our souls." - Bishop Javier Echevarria Monday, July 30 St. Peter Chrysologus Father Vince Beuser, S.J. National Shrine of the Little Flower Life Matters “The inviolability of the person which is a reflection of the absolute inviolability of God, finds its primary and fundamental expression in the inviolability of human life. Above all, the common outcry, which is justly made on behalf of human rights. For example, the right to health, to home, to work, to family, to culture is false and illusory if the right to life, the most basic and fundamental right and the condition for all other personal rights, is not defended with maximum determination.” (Pope John Paul II, Christifideles Laici (1988), no. 38.) Some say pro-lifers are “single issue voters”, but is this really a simple single issue? When voting, consider that voting pro-life is voting for: • A better economy: Fewer babies mean fewer consumers, less demand for goods and services, and fewer jobs • Civil rights: Planned Parenthood targets areas of high concentration of minorities. In contemporary America, the rate of pregnancy among black women is almost three times as high as it is for white women and, though they make up less than 13% of the female population, black women have about 37% of the abortions • Freedom for women: Most women who abort their children do not feel that they have a choice. They feel alone, abandoned; shamed and forced to make a choice that they or their family feel will free them from their current situation. Providing them with the full truth, loving them and giving them help in their time of crisis protects them from the post-abortion trauma they will experience. • Protection of the elderly and disabled: If a society can judge that a human being in the womb can be eliminated; the natural progression is to determine when other members of the society have outlived their effectiveness. If a life is only judged worthwhile because of what they can contribute toward society, or if they are wanted, or if their healthcare is not too expensive, then we may all be in a position one day of being judged expendable. Rationing and euthanasia are “pro-choice”; but whose choice? • Conscience protection and religious liberty: Pro-abortion advocates will do anything to advance the availability and funding of abortion even to the extent of infringing on the first amendment rights of those who do not want to participate in the evil of abortion or pay for it through insurance premiums. The evidence is clear: The HHS Mandate. Crisis Pregnancy? Mother and Unborn Baby Care can help! Call 248.559.7576 Hurting from an abortion experience? We have one of his books, Doers of the Word. "Whether you are surrounded by the peaceful tranquility of an empty chapel or the anxiety-ridden mad dash of New York City rush hour, God is always there. He's there in the stillness. He's there in the chaos. Our call is to seek Him, find Him and serve Him. No matter our agenda for the day, Dolan masterfully combines insightful commentary and personal stories with snippets of Church history, lives of the saints, and Catholic teaching to inspire holiness through the daily details of ordinary life." (Back cover). Section 8, Spirituality. We will also have his next book, To Whom Shall We Go?, within the next few weeks. Lending Library hours are Sundays from 10 am to 2 pm, and Fridays from 9:15 am to Noon, in the National Shrine Conference Center, Room C (across the alley from the Northwood parking lot).
