Notes from Monsignor Easton
Forming Consciences for Faithful
Citizenship (Conclusion)
The following excerpt is the conclusion of a
document published by the United States
Conference of Catholic Bishops. It is not easy
reading. However, I believe it is essential reading
as we form our opinions and exercise our right to
vote responsibly.
Option for the Poor and Vulnerable
While the common good embraces all, those
who are in greatest need deserve preferential
concern. A moral test for society is how we treat
the weakest among us—the unborn, those
dealing with disabilities or terminal illness, the poor
and marginalized.
Dignity of Work and the Rights of Workers
The economy must serve people, not the other
way around. Economic justice calls for decent
work at fair, living wages, opportunities for legal
status for immigrant workers, and the opportunity
for all people to work together for the common
good through their work, ownership, enterprise,
investment, participation in unions, and other
forms of economic activity.
Solidarity
We are one human family, whatever our
national, racial, ethnic, economic, and
ideological
differences.
Our
Catholic
commitment to solidarity requires that we pursue
justice, eliminate racism, end human trafficking,
protect human rights, seek peace, and avoid the
use of force except as a necessary last resort.
Sharing Christ in and through the Church
GOAL: $204,640
Caring for God’s Creation
TOTAL PLEDGES: $161,532
Care for the earth is a duty of our Catholic
faith. We all are called to be careful stewards of
God’s creation and to ensure a safe and
hospitable environment for vulnerable human
beings now and in the future.

Thank You!
To My National Shrine Friends,
I wish I could thank each of you personally for attending my retirement reception
hosted by the National Shrine Ladies Guild on Sunday, July 22. I am overwhelmed by
your generous gifts of cards, Masses, prayers, good wishes and the monetary gifts
enclosed with your cards. I have decided to send all the enclosed monetary gifts to
the Sisters of Charity Retirement Fund. The Sisters deeply appreciate donations
toward this fund. I will be supported by this fund during my years of retirement at
Mount St. Joseph.
I also want to thank the members of the National Shrine Ladies Guild who so
generously supported the Sister of Charity Retirement Fund and turned the National
Shrine Conference Center into a beautiful reception. Everyone enjoyed the home
made cookies and cakes, fresh fruit and punch. The beautiful arrangements of
flowers on the tables added to the festive atmosphere.
Please be assured of my prayers for you and your families as we continue on our
journey of life. May you be blessed a 100 fold for your generous and loving kindness
to me and the many other Sisters of Charity who taught in Shrine Schools and
ministered to people of the National Shrine Parish Community.
God Bless and Love you, Sister Mary Alicia Bomya, S.C.

Conclusion
In light of Catholic teaching, as bishops we vigorously repeat our call for a
renewed politics that focuses on moral principles, the defense of life, the needs of
the weak, and the pursuit of the common good. This kind of political participation
respects the social teaching of our Church and the best traditions of our nation.
Dream Cruise Party
It hardly seems possible, but the parish Dream Cruise Party is less than 3 weeks
away. Mark your calendars and put reminders in all your mobile devices to be sure
to attend on Friday, August 17.

Perpetual Mass Enrollment Cards
The National Shrine of the Little Flower now has a beautiful six
page perpetual Mass card available at the Parish rectory office
and the National Shrine gift shop. With this enrollment, the
person or persons, living or deceased, will be remembered in a
Mass once a month at the National Shrine on or near the first
Friday of each month.
The Masses will be celebrated every month in perpetuity. The suggested offering
for the enrollment card and a card suitable to be given to family or individuals is $25
per card.

Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration
"The Eucharist is the fruit of a love that knows no
limit."
"Jesus gave Himself in the Eucharist because He
knows that we need Him. Before multiplying the
loaves and fishes, He looked at the multitude
following Him and exclaimed:' I have compassion on the
crowd, because they have been with Me now three days,
and have nothing to eat; and I am unwilling to send them
away hungry, lest they faint on the way.' He understands that
our path through life also is long. Besides bodily fatigue, we
are beset by many other difficulties and dangers. Left to our
own resources, we will not reach the end of the journey
safely. And so He remains with us, sustaining us as food for our
souls."

Life Matters
“The inviolability of the person which is a reflection of the absolute
inviolability of God, finds its primary and fundamental expression in
the inviolability of human life. Above all, the common outcry, which is
justly made on behalf of human rights. For example, the right to
health, to home, to work, to family, to culture is false and illusory if the
right to life, the most basic and fundamental right and the condition
for all other personal rights, is not defended with maximum
determination.” (Pope John Paul II, Christifideles Laici (1988), no. 38.)
Some say pro-lifers are “single issue voters”, but is this really a
simple single issue? When voting, consider that voting pro-life is voting
for:
• A better economy: Fewer babies mean fewer consumers, less
demand for goods and services, and fewer jobs
• Civil rights: Planned Parenthood targets areas of high
concentration of minorities. In contemporary America, the rate of
pregnancy among black women is almost three times as high as it
is for white women and, though they make up less than 13% of the
female population, black women have about 37% of the
abortions
• Freedom for women: Most women who abort their children do
not feel that they have a choice. They feel alone, abandoned;
shamed and forced to make a choice that they or their family feel
will free them from their current situation. Providing them with the
full truth, loving them and giving them help in their time of crisis
protects them from the post-abortion trauma they will experience.
• Protection of the elderly and disabled: If a society can judge that
a human being in the womb can be eliminated; the natural
progression is to determine when other members of the society
have outlived their effectiveness. If a life is only judged worthwhile
because of what they can contribute toward society, or if they
are wanted, or if their healthcare is not too expensive, then we
may all be in a position one day of being judged expendable.
Rationing and euthanasia are “pro-choice”; but whose choice?
• Conscience protection and religious liberty: Pro-abortion
advocates will do anything to advance the availability and
funding of abortion even to the extent of infringing on the first
amendment rights of those who do not want to participate in the
evil of abortion or pay for it through insurance premiums. The
evidence is clear: The HHS Mandate.

Cardinal
Timothy
Dolan is very much in
the news these days, as he stands up
against the HHS Mandate and it's attack
on religious freedom. We have one of his
books, Doers of the Word. "Whether you
are surrounded by the peaceful tranquility
of an empty chapel or the anxiety-ridden
mad dash of New York City rush hour,
God is always there. He's there in the
stillness. He's there in the chaos. Our call
is to seek Him, find Him and serve Him. No
matter our agenda for the day, Dolan
masterfully
combines
insightful
commentary and personal stories with
snippets of Church history, lives of the
saints, and Catholic teaching to inspire
holiness through the daily details of
ordinary life." (Back cover).

man and woman, God’s intention for their relationship, and the result of original sin. He also explores the relationship that
Jesus had with women and the reason behind the all-male priesthood.
This study group is part of the ENDOW (Educating on the Nature and Dignity of Women) series. The course will be cofacilitated by Judy Maten and Vikki Jenkins. Cost for the class is $80, which includes all materials. Register online at
www.endowonline.com. Questions? Email Judy Maten at [email protected]. Sign Up Now!
Society of St. Vincent de Paul
What does the National Shrine Conference of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul do and are you called to
help? The Vincentian Rule defines the essential elements of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul as “Spirituality,
Friendship, and Service.” Part of our service is helping those in the community with their needs.
During the month of June 2012, National Shrine Vincentians met with 49 clients (affecting 70 total family
members) at the National Shrine or in our clients’ homes. We were able to provide:
•
24 clients with non-perishables from our food pantry (food donated by parishioners during food drives) or fresh-food
vouchers;
•
4 clients with rent assistance that avoided eviction
•
1 client was helped in paying a medical bill
•
9 clients with bus tickets or transportation assistance to job or medical appointments
•
1 client was provided furniture from a SVdP Store
•
16 clients were referred to the appropriate social service agency, such as South Oakland Shelter, an attorney to help
with a legal matter, Michigan Department of Human Services, Grace Center of Hope, or their local SVdP Conference
among other agencies.
•
(Note: some clients receive multiple forms of assistance)
The National Shrine St. Vincent de Paul is in need of new members who hear the call of St. Vincent and Blessed Frédéric
Ozanam to serve the less fortunate in our parish and community. Being a Vincentian is never easy, but nothing this fulfilling
ever is. Do you have a morning or afternoon to meet clients and change their lives? Call the National Shrine SVdP at
248.541.4122 and ask to be connected to the National Shrine St. Vincent de Paul office.

Attention Married Couples of all Ages!
Teams of Our Lady, TOOL, is an international movement of married couples, chartered in France in
1947. The purpose of TOOL is 1) growth in the spiritual life of the couple and family through a program
of prayer and study; 2) small group support for couples endeavoring to live Gospel lives through a
monthly meeting with a meal and other sharing; and 3) growth in the couple’s intimacy through
couple prayer and deeper communication.
There is an opportunity to attend a TOOL Information meeting on Tuesday, August 14 at 7 PM in
meeting room B in the Administrative offices at St. Anastasia. Many couples at St. Anastasia and
surrounding parishes can attest to the blessings of such fellowship! If you have any questions, or to let
us know you are coming, please contact Marie & Carl Weber at 248-680-0810 or
[email protected]. Your response is not required, but it will help us in planning refreshments for
the meeting.
Help Shrine Catholic Grade School Earn Free Money
We are asking parishioners to save BOX TOPS for Education coupons. BOX TOPS are
on a variety of products you buy every day at the grocery store. Box Tops are found on
hundreds of participating products throughout your grocery store. General Mills, Betty
Crocker®, Pillsbury®, Kleenex® and Ziploc® are just a few of the trusted brands you’ll
recognize. Since 2002, the grade school has earned over $18,000 in free money. In
the Fall, representatives from the grade school will collect all the BOX TOPS after the
masses. Watch for information. This is an easy way to help. In addition please log onto the following website
