Fall2015 LacSinclair Newsletter Inthisedition: -Watertesting -Fishingderbyresults -Muckreduction -Photosandmore ShorelineStudy LastJuly,themunicipalityofLaPêchecontractedwiththe agencyABVdes7toconductastudyoftheLacSinclair shorelinewithintheframeworkofthe15metersfromthe shoreregulation. Fornearlysixhours,representativesofthisorganization proceededaroundthelakebyboatandtookphotosand recordedtheGPSpositionoftheshorelinesofallproperties locatedonourlake.Thepurposeofthisexercisewasto providethemunicipalitywithaphotographicdatabaseonthe statusofeachproperty’sshoreline.Thesedatacouldthenbe usedinthefuturetoenforcethe15meterslawandenablea moreeffectiveapproachtooffendingownerswhomightbe causingtheirshorelinetodeteriorate. Finances.AsindicatedinthefinancialreportpresentedattheAnnual GeneralMeeting,increasingcostsaregraduallyeatingintoourreserve.These increasesrelateprimarilytorisingcostsforwatertesting,liabilityinsurance andtheexpenseswehaveincurredforouractivities:thefireworksdisplay, regattaandfishingtournament.Atitsmeetingon31October,theExecutive Committeereviewedthesituationanddecidedthataprudentcourseofaction wouldbetooptforamodestincreaseinthemembershipfeewhichhas remainedunchangedat$20.00forovertwentyyears.Effectivein2016, therefore,themembershipfeewillincreaseto$25.00asreflectedinthe LacSinclairFall2015Newsletter MembershipFormattachedtothisNewsletter.Forthosewhohavehighspeed internetaccesswewouldencourageyoupaythefeeonlineat http://lacsinclair.ca/membership/membership.htm Restassuredyouwillstillbeabletoregisterandpaybycompletingthe attachedformandmailingitin. Onthisholidayweekendin Ontario,therewereslightly fewerboatsandfishersthan lastyear(secondSundayin August2014);however,the proportionofchildrenenjoying thislastlongweekendbefore gettingreadyforschoolwas higher. Statisticsfor2015areas follows(comparedto2014inbrackets):17boatsregistered(29in2014);56 fisherpersons(77in2014);42adultsandteenagers,14children(61adults andteenagers,16childrenin2014). WaterQuality TheAssociationalsoconductsmultiplewaterqualityassessmentsstartingin thelatespringandagaininthelatesummerandinvolves4distincttests. 1. eColimeasures'cleanliness'andhealthsafetylevelsforswimming. 2. Phosphatemeasurespollutantsenteringourwaterfromhumanand animalwaste,laundry,cleaning,industrialeffluents,andfertilizer runoff.Thesephosphatesbecomedetrimentalwhentheyoverfertilize LacSinclairFall2015Newsletter aquaticplantsandcausesteppedplantdeathandsediment. 3. ChlorophyllAmeasureswaterclarity.ChlorophyllAisameasureof theportionofthepigmentthatisstillactiveinthelake;inotherwords, theportionthatisstillactivelyrespiringandphotosynthesizingatthe timeofsampling.IfhighlevelsofPhosphatehavecausedplantstodie offthentheamountofalgaefoundinalakegreatlyaffectsthelake’s physical,chemical,andbiologicalmakeup.ChlorophyllAisanearly indicatorofincreasedalgaebloomsanda'dying'lake. 4. Secchidiskisaninexpensiveandstraightforwardmethodofmeasuring waterclaritybyloweringadiscintothewateruntilitbecomes invisible.Thedepthismeasuredatwhichpointitbecameinvisibleand theprocessisrepeatedatthesametwositeseverytwoweeksfromJune 15thtoOctober15th.ThereadingsaresharedwiththeProvincial governmentandcomparedtootherwaterbodiesthroughoutthe province. ThefirstsamplingtakesplaceinlatespringandmeasureseColiand Phosphatelevelsduetospringmeltandrun-offintothelake.Thesecondtest inlatesummermeasureseColiandChlorphyllAasaresultofhumanactivity andnutrientsenteringthelakefrompeakuseandincreasedwater temperatures. In2015waterlevel, eColi,Phosphateand Chlorophyllreadings arestable everywhereexcept thereisan increasingtrend fromSept2014(-2 partsper100ml),to June2015(10parts per100ml)and againSept2015(14 partsper100ml)at site12(narrowsto BaieSimon).
