Welcome
C’mon in isn’t just our tagline, it’s an open invitation to visit the Fond du Lac area any time of
the year. We welcome anglers seeking “the big one” below Lake Winnebago’s surface, as well
as those searching for thrills above the waves. Families looking for friendly, affordable places to
play and laugh together are greeted by Lakeside Park — 400 beautiful acres along the shore in
our Lakeside District, with a carousel, train and petting zoo. We invite couples to explore our art
galleries, theatres, shops and restaurants, for that perfect getaway weekend. We embrace bikers,
powered by pedal or throttle, craving rides on picturesque rural roads. And we welcome those
nurturers of nature wishing to see a bit of the wild side in our state parks, forests, and marshes.
So, C’mon in — we can’t wait to see you!

In this guide you’ll find abundant resources to start planning your next trip to the
Fond du Lac area. To make it easy for you, we’ve organized this information into
key sections, along with listings, maps, and pages highlighting our various local
districts. You can also visit fdl.com for additional information about the area,
including itinerary ideas, videos, and more.
Leave the Hibernation
to the Bears
Winter presents us with two
choices: hibernate or go play in
the snow! In Fond du Lac, we
love to put on extra layers of
clothes and get out and create
new memories! This year, the
second weekend in February will
see a brand new event perfect for
families looking for new traditions.
Billed as STURGEON
SPECTACULAR – A Celebration
of Winter and Really Big Fish, the
name says it all!
Locals for years have celebrated
the opening weekend of the
sturgeon season with all kinds
of quirky, family-friendly and fun
activities. This year, we will be
inviting visitors to join in the
craziness. Be amazed as the
frozen Lake Winnebago is
transformed into a hockey
rink, ice kiting exhibition stage,
fireworks launching pad and
much more. But, the festivities
are not confined to the Lakeside
District alone; the Downtown
District will be hopping, including
live entertainment at THELMA and
the Historic Village District will be
engaging families with interactive
activities.
Chase away cabin fever and C’mon
in to Fond du Lac for the first annual STURGEON SPECTACULAR
February 12–14, 2016!

FAIRG ROUNDS DIS TR IC T
Sprawled out over dozens of acres on the
city’s southeast side, the Fairgrounds District
is known as the home of the annual Fond du
Lac County Fair. It also houses the Blue Line
Family Ice Center, where you can attend an
exciting Fondy Bears hockey game or be
amazed by the skill and precision displayed
at the Foot of the Lake Synchronized Skating
Competition. And in summer, the place to be
is the Fairgrounds Family Aquatic Center, a
waterpark-style swimming pool where you
can splash right into refreshing fun!

icy thrills, timeless
traditions and a prized fish
B
eneath the frozen surface of Lake
Winnebago lurks a prehistoric giant. A
living fossil left over from the Age of the
Dinosaurs. A fish so fascinating, it doesn’t chase
lures so much as it lures folks from far and wide.
We are speaking, of course, of the Great
Lakes Sturgeon. And here in Fond du Lac,
no creature on Earth is more celebrated,
venerated and passionately pursued. For fishing
enthusiasts and fun-seekers alike, it all adds up
to one unforgettable experience!
The excitement kicks off the second Saturday
of each February. That’s when sturgeon spearing
season officially opens on Lake Winnebago,
one of just two places in all of North America
where sturgeon spearing is legal, and the only
place in the world where sturgeon spearers
gather in such great numbers.
For many, the sport is part of a rich annual
tradition, as wisdom, equipment, and family
lore are often passed down from generation to
generation.
Thousands of anxious sturgeon spearers
stream out onto the frozen lake, quickly setting
up the world’s largest temporary “shanty town”
24
of fishing huts, or “dark houses.” Come opening
morning, they begin their quest and patiently
wait for their quarry to appear.
Meanwhile, the season’s opening also marks
the beginning of a fun-filled weekend festival.
At the heart of the excitement is the “Sturgeon
Stampede Winter Kite Boarding Classic,” a
thrill-packed, pulse-racing competition for
both spectators and participants. Daredevil
competitors take to the ice on boards, skates
and skis, pulled along at breakneck speeds
by harnessing the wind with brightly colored
parachutes and handheld sails. They race, jump
and perform stunts that dazzle and delight in an
amazing spectacle.
If witnessing their incredible feats inspires
you, why not get going yourself? You’ll find all
sorts of activities from ice skating and broomball
to ice bowling, ice sailing, stupid human tricks
and more. Of course, no festival would be com-
plete without plenty of enticing and unique foods
and beverages to warm your spirit!
But without a doubt, each day’s biggest
highlight is the weigh-in on shore, when
spearers return with their prized catches. It’s
then you can get a rare catch of your own—a
brief glimpse of the elusive Lake Sturgeon.
With some fish reaching a length of more than
seven feet and weighing over 200 pounds, the
enormous and bizarre sturgeon is a sight you
won’t soon forget!
Finally, each day closes with families
and friends gathering at many of the local
establishments to share their day’s tales and tell
stories of the “one that got away.”
Though sturgeon spearing season lasts up
to 16 days (or until the harvest cap is met), the
best time to experience the most fun is during
opening weekend. Don’t miss your chance to
“catch” one of North America’s most unique
winter celebrations!

Spearing, please visit www.fdl.com/

HUNTING
Fond du Lac is in the “elite” Area 2
turkey hunting zone of southeastern
Wisconsin and is a hunter’s
paradise. We feature a variety
of landscapes from the Niagara
Escarpment, the “Kettles,” straight
farmland and marsh areas. There
is no doubt a healthy share of the
state’s wild turkey population of
over 320,000 Eastern turkeys in
our area. There is public hunting in
state recreational areas managed by
the Habitat Restoration Area, Kettle
Moraine State Forest–Northern Unit,
Brandon Marsh, Eldorado Marsh
Wildlife Area and parts of Mullet
Creek Wildlife Area. Call the
Fond du Lac Area Convention &

HISTORIC VILLAGE DISTRICT
Take a trip back in time! Just south of the
Downtown District, the Historic Village
District is centered around the Galloway
House and Village. Over twenty reclaimed
buildings (such as a print shop, general store
and gristmill) have been relocated here to
depict turn-of-the-century village life. Also
featured is the Galloway House, a 19th
Century, 30-room mansion that was home to
Fond du Lac’s most prominent citizens. This
district also features the Blakely Museum,
the Civilian Conservation Corps Museum, and
the Buttermilk Creek Park and Amphitheater,
a popular outdoor entertainment venue.
