THE ALLEGIANCE
Newsletter For Alumni, Community & Friends Fall /Winter2010 CASEY AT BAT On September 18, 2009, Reverend Edward J. Casey was installed as the fourth Presi‐
dent of Archbishop John Carroll High School. Fr. Casey is a hometown guy, born and raised in SW Philadelphia and a graduate of Good Shepherd High School. After his ordination, Fr. Casey spent time at Holy Innocents’ Parish in Philadelphia, Villa St. Joseph’s in Darby and as Chaplain at Little Flower Nursing Home. When Fr. Casey arrived at Carroll in 2001 it was the start of something special. For the next eleven years, Fr. taught Theology here, making the transition to President virtually seamless. The students, faculty and staff already know and love him! You’ll see Father at most school events so be sure to say “hello”. We are so ex‐
cited to have Father Casey guiding our school community. His energy and enthusiasm are contagious and his first year went great. We wish Reverend William E. Grogan, Carroll’s Past President , much health and happiness at All Saint’s Parish in Bridesburg. ADVISORY BOARD Francis Fox (‘77) Chairman Andrew Bilotta Joseph Doyle (‘77) Rev. Edward J. demic, and social development of our students. Our Catholic identity is the center and reason for our exis‐
tence. All the various segments of our community have worked diligently since September of 1967 to provide a strong Catholic education and to form young people to live out their calling to follow Jesus. We are proud to boast a very strong and vibrant Alumni who continue to live out the motto, “Carroll Cares”. Since the first graduating class in 1970, 13,200 young men and women have graduated from Archbishop John Carroll High School. This wouldn’t be possible without the support of those that came before. In this issue of Allegiance, we will chronicle many of the exciting things and events that are happening at Carroll. Many of these things are made possible through your continued support and contributions to the Carroll Fund. I thank you, Alumni, Parents, and Friends of Carroll as you continue to show your belief and sup‐
port of the quality education that our students are receiving and I thank you for helping to ensure this tradition continues. You have shown that “You Still Care” by the sharing of your time, talent, or treasure. I would ask you to please be generous again this year by your contribution to the Carroll Fund 2011. The Carroll Fund makes possible the Tuition Assistance Program, which is so important to our mission. Many grateful students are able to receive a Catholic education through your generosity. The Archbishop Carroll High School family is a true community centered on Jesus Christ and his gospel and I thank you for your help in continuing to build up this portion of His Kingdom. God Bless you. Sincerely, DONATE ONLINE www.jcarroll.org

The dedication that Brian Zwaan (‘76) and Tom Brophy gave to Carroll will be remembered for many years to come. It’s bitter be‐
cause we’ll miss their undying commitment to our school and sweet because without them we wouldn’t be where we are today as a school community. During their time on the Board, countless positive changes have been made to improve our school. They have our undying gratitude. We welcome our new Advisory Board Members, Drew Bilotta and Jim Quinlan. Drew is a 1979 graduate of Cardinal O’Hara and a 1982 graduate of The Wharton School at the Univer‐
sity of Pennsylvania . Drew has been in the Financial Services business since 1983 and is currently a Certified Financial planner operating his practice as PAX Partners. He’s an active member of OLA Parish and teaches CCD. He’s been married to his wife Dee for 22 years and has two children attending Carroll. Jim is a 1981 graduate of Carroll and graduated from Bucknell University and received his MBA from Villanova University. He’s currently Presi‐
dent of Beneficial Advisors, a division of Beneficial Bank. He and his wife Jenetta have been married for 19 years and have four children, two attend Bishop Shanahan and two attend SS. Simon and Jude. We thank them for their service and know they’ll bring a lot of good ideas to the board. 3

ENROLLMENT CONTINUES TO BE STRONG
We continue to be encouraged by our solid enrollment figures. Taking a look back, in the
period from 1990 to 1999 the average size of the graduating class of AJCHS was 224. In
the ten year period just ended, 2000-2010 the average size of the graduating class was 248.
Right now, the average of our Freshman, Sophomore and Junior classes is 264. If we take
just the Freshman and Sophomore classes the average stands at 281.
Enrollment is critical for our school for so many reasons. Special thanks for the efforts of
the AJCHS Advisory Board, the Enrollment Committee of the Advisory Board and especially the day to day work of the Faculty, Administration, Staff AND students. The students themselves are many times the best ambassadors of the fact that “Carroll Cares”.
MAY OUR JOURNEY BE A CONCERN FOR OTHERS, A ROAD OF PEACE AND A PATH OF LOVE 13
Campus Improvements
The final touches were put on the renovation of the East Gym. The bleachers were completely rebuilt and refinished. The gym was repainted along with the locker rooms and the connecting hallway. The gym floor was completely resurfaced with new logos being applied. In addition, volleyball lines were installed on the new court as Volleyball has been moved to the “big gym”. Banners
for the various championships in the different sports have been installed on the south wall of the
gym. In addition, the first two PIAA state championship banners for our Girls and Boys Basketball Teams of 2009, have been raised on the east wall.
Over the past two years, many improvements have been made to the auditorium. In addition to
repainting, new stage curtains were hung along with new red drapes in the rear of the auditorium.
New steel doors were installed between the gym lobby areas and the academic towers on both
sides. The inside doors at the main entrances on the east and west sides were also replaced. The
rugs have been replaced along the back of the auditorium and down the aisles. In addition, the
front of the auditorium will be carpeted for the first time, which will be better both aesthetically
and acoustically. The stage floor has been sanded and refinished; the sound system is being upgraded. Finally, a computer/projector system has been installed in the communications room
which will enhance our auditorium presentations. The West Cafeteria had new ceiling tiles installed, and the PA system in the cafeteria was also revamped.
The band room and chorus room on the east side received new ceiling tiles. Several offices on the
west side, including Accounting, President, Tuition Officer and Board Conference Room were
painted and had new rugs installed.
The baseball field had the infield areas regraded and new infield grass was ready for the 2010 season. In addition, a new backstop was installed which will is further back from home plate. New
permanent bench areas were also installed. Work has also begun on clearing trees with a goal to
have a centerfield fence distance of 380 feet. The theme for the pitchers will be “From Field of
Screams to Field of Dreams”. We also intend to raise the left field fence level from 8 feet high to
16 feet high from the left field foul pole to left center. When finished, we will have the best field in
the Catholic League.
A major capital project has taken place with the rewiring in the Curley Family Library. More
power and electrical safeguards were needed in the library and computer lab. These upgrades to
the power source and circuit breakers were essential.
The old IU trailer outside the East gym has been demolished and that area has been cleaned and
landscaped. Also the tennis courts, which have been condemned and unusable for the past 4
years, were also demolished and the area graded and reseeded. The extra field will be available
for ninth grade football and track and field to work out.
WWW.JCARROLL.ORG Many of these improvements would not be possible without the generosity of our alumni and benefactors. Thanks to all of you. 14

ALUMNI HOST BEEF AND BEVERAGE TO BENEFIT SENIOR SHAWN FRIEL
Shawn Friel is an active 17 year old Carroll Senior. Over the summer, Shawn was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma which is a cancer of the bones, the cancer originated in his
shoulder and spread to both his lungs. Patrick Gilmore (‘09) and John Wynne (‘09)
hosted a Beef and Beverage on September 10, 2010 to benefit the Friel family during this
difficult time. Almost $10,000 was raised to help the Freil’s but what touched them the
most was the outpouring of love from family, friends and even those who don’t know
them. The Carroll Community is very thankful to our Alumni, Patrick and John, for organizing this very important event and proving, once again, that Carroll Cares (even after
you graduate).
If you’re interested in making a donation to the Friel family, please contact the Alumni/
Development Office at 610-688-7610 x 125 or [email protected].

Educational Improvement Tax Credit Program (EITC) Tax credits to eligible businesses contributing to a Scholarship Organization, an Educational Improvement Organization, and/or a Pre‐Kindergarten Scholarship Organization. Guidelines for Businesses Businesses authorized to do business in Pennsylvania who are subject to one or more of the following taxes are eligible to participate in the EITC Program: • Corporate Net Income Tax • Capital Stock Franchise Tax • Bank and Trust Company Shares Tax • Title Insurance Companies Shares Tax • Insurance Premiums Tax • Mutual Thrift Institution Tax Additionally, most subchapter s‐corporations are now able to participate passing through the tax credit on their personal income tax. A Great Way for Businesses to Direct Their Tax Dollars The EITC has accomplished what many in Pennsylvania have been advocating for years: to get the busi‐
ness community more involved in education. The EITC enables companies to support local non‐profit charities, at minimal cost, instead of sending their tax dollars to Harrisburg. It's that simple. The business community has overwhelmingly responded the challenge. To date, over 3,600 companies have pledged in excess of $350 million dollars to the programs. History of the Tax Credit The Pennsylvania Legislature has offered a great incentive to enable PA businesses to support Educa‐
tional Advancement Efforts in the state. It is a tax credit (not just a deduction) called the Educational Improvement Tax Credit. The process to receive tax credit is simple. Businesses send the Department of Community and Eco‐
nomic Development (DCED) a one‐page application for the tax credit, which is available on our website here. A business must complete and submit an EITC application annually with the DCED, which will then determine whether the firm qualifies for the credit. Tax credits cannot exceed the tax liability of a business for a given taxable year, and may not exceed $200,000 annually per credit per business. Also, a tax credit must be applied in the taxable year the contribution is made. QUESTIONS? ‐ Contact the Development Office at 610 688‐7610 x 125 11
PLANNING YOUR GIFT GIFTS MAY BE DONATED IN VARIOUS WAYS Gifts of Cash This is the most common method of providing a gift. A cash gift to Archbishop John Carroll H.S. is tax deductible. Gifts of Appreciated Securities A gift of appreciated securities allows the donor to make a significant contribution at a reduced cost. Federal tax laws allow a charitable deduction for the full market value of secu‐
rities on the date of the gift. Gifts of Life Insurance Absolute Assignment: This method transfers owner‐
ship of a policy that has outlived its original purpose to the individual. Co‐Beneficiary: This method names Archbishop John Carroll H.S. as co‐beneficiary of all or part of the pro‐
ceeds of a new or existing policy. Gift of Annuity Agreements Annuity contributions are lump‐sum gifts to Archbishop John Carroll H.S., and in turn Archbishop John Carroll H.S. makes fixed annual payments to the donor for life. A donor is al‐
lowed a tax deduction for a portion of the amount trans‐
ferred, and for a period of years only a part of the payments will be taxed as income. The size of payment is based on the age (s) of the recipient (s) at the time of the gift. Charitable Remainder Annuity Trusts and Unitrusts Bequests These are provisions in wills to leave a gift to Archbishop John Carroll H.S. Charitable bequests are fully deductible from the estate and can significantly reduce es‐
tate taxes on the balance of the estate. Bequests may be specified as a gift of cash or securities, real estate, or other property. Alternatively, they may take the form of a percent‐
age of the total estate. A donor may also consider a residu‐
ary bequest, which is a gift of all or a portion of one’s estate after other conditions are met. BLOCS (Business Leaders Organized for Catholic Schools) BLOCS is a financial aid program offered to students enrolled in grades K‐12. Assistance is given to those with greatest financial need. Forms can be picked up in the Tui‐
tion Office in January. Required documentation must be pro‐
vided for the application to be processed. All information must be submitted by March 31st. The TAP Program The Tuition Assistance Program is for Archdiocesan High Schools Only. Applications are available at the schools Tuition Office after January 1st. Applications are mailed to the Tuition Assistance Program, 222 North 17th Street, Phila‐
delphia, PA 19103‐1299 Sponsor A Student Program This program is designed to provide tuition assis‐
tance to Carroll students in need of financial support. Dona‐
tions can be made directly to Archbishop John Carroll H.S. through the Carroll Fund, designating Sponsor A Student as the recipient of your restricted donation. This option enables the donor to make a significant gift to Archbishop John Carroll H.S. during their lifetime and con‐
tinue to receive income for one self and / or other beneficiar‐
ies. After the life interests have passed, the remaining princi‐
pal will pass to Archbishop John Carroll H.S.. In addition to income tax deductions in the year the trust is instituted (with five‐year carry‐over privileges), donors may avoid capital gains and significantly reduce estate and gift taxes. Company Matching Programs are for employees and / or retirees. Enclose the company form with your monetary gift to Archbishop John Carroll H.S. Your company can then in‐
crease the amount of your gift with their match. Pennsylvania Educational Improvement Tax Credits (EITC) Charitable Lead Trusts This option enables Archbishop John Carroll H.S. to receive interest income for a specified period of time from a principal amount that a donor retains at the end of the trust. Company Matching Gift Programs The Pennsylvania EITC are given to Pennsylvania businesses for contributions made to primary and secondary schools, including Archbishop John Carroll H.S. This tax credit program involves companies making one or two year dona‐
tions with a maximum tax credit of $100,000 annually. Need Info on Planned Giving? Contact the Alumni/Development Office 610 688‐7610 ext. 125 18
CAREER DAY 2010
Career Day has become a major event at Archbishop Carroll. In its current format, inaugurated by Tim O’Brien ‘02, students follow their regular class schedule and
two guest speakers replace the classroom teachers. This allows all students to hear
from a variety of professions - not just a few. The entire event is coordinated and run
by the John Carroll Chapter of the National Honor Society. The student chairs are responsible for everything, so if you get a call from one of our students, please consider
saying “yes”. If you already know you’re interested, feel free to send them an email at
[email protected]. Last year’s keynote speaker was Steve Curley (‘88). This was
Steve’s 16th year speaking at Career Day but his first as Keynote. In Steve’s words, “I
remember when I was at Carroll, I barely knew what life after high school would be
like, let alone how many interesting jobs happen every day, all around us. That was the
message I tried to convey. Also, this year was special to me because they asked me, a
lowly and humble chemical engineer, to be the keynote speaker at the beginning of the
day. I addressed the whole school, telling them that on this Career Day, their world was
about to get a whole lot bigger. Please consider signing up next year-- after doing this
for 16 years, I can tell you that the kids really enjoy the day”!
