Taking A Step Up - John Carroll Catholic High School
John Carroll Catholic High School SPECIAL EDITION- VOL XXVI ISSUE I Connections Quarterly Newsletter & Annual Giving Campaign Brochure “Taking A Step Up” in 2009-2010 “A step toward success at John Carroll High School” Greetings from John Carroll! “A step ahead in academic excellence” This year John Carroll’s theme is “Taking A Step Up.” You will notice that JCHS is stepping up in all areas from academics, athletics, arts, faith, future, philanthropy, and service, to technology. While we announce our annual theme and take a step toward success at JCHS, we also reflect on the past year with grateful hearts. This publication is the first of its kind, as a combination of the Annual Giving Campaign Brochure and Fall Newsletter. We hope to show our gratitude to our donors, announce new opportunities for philanthropy, and appeal to your generosity again this year, while also reporting on quarterly alumni and school news. Combining these publications will allow us to be mindful of our budget and environment. Enjoy reading all the news, and please prayerfully consider how you can help JCHS take a step up this year. Proverbs 21:26 ...the righteous gives and does not hold back. “John Carroll’s classes definitely challenged me. I had to work hard to maintain a high GPA. The school also helped me mature emotionally and pushed me to follow my dreams.” – Jamilyn Vaughn, Class of 2009, attending University of North Florida, pursuing a career as a nurse practitioner Annual Giving Campaign Has Begun! The 2009-2010 Annual Giving Campaign has officially started! Every fall we honor those who have generously donated during the past year, and ask our community to support us for the current school year. Without your philanthropy, it is impossible for us to offer the quality of education that we do. As you know, in order for our students to continue their growth and success, we must provide them with the tools to build their futures. The young men and women at John Carroll amaze us daily with their talents, academic successes, sportsmanship, leadership, and Christian attitudes. Please help us again this year by donating to them. There are several new options for sponsorships and a wish list that our faculty has compiled. Donations can be made in a variety of ways that are designed for your convenience. Thank you again to those who have graciously given to us in the past and have helped students “step up” at John Carroll. Your Gifts At Work... Last year funds from the Annual Giving Campaign were used to purchase… - A campus-wide security system to ensure the safety of students, monitor the campus, and deter potential criminals. The recorded footage from the cameras has already been utilized numerous times and is proving to be an excellent tool. E - quipment to start boys’ and girls’ lacrosse teams. The energetic teams had a full roster and proved to be very talented. JCHS is proud to be the only school in St. Lucie County with lacrosse and looks forward to being competitive in the popular sport. L - and for future expansion. Joey Miller, an alumni, past recipient of “Alumni of the Year,” annual Habitat for Humanity sponsor, and generous benefactor, sold JCHS a parcel of land to the north of the “senior parking lot”. This property may be used for future expansion, a potential building site, or more parking. “For taking an extra step in your philanthropy… our grateful hearts” In Memorium... “For the quiet steps we take as a faithful family of God” Generous donations were made in loving memory of... Penny Roberts Brighton JoAnn Fowler Mark Hastings Sister Joseph-Annetta Ricapito Deuteronomy 16: 17...Every man shall give as he is able, according to the blessing of the LORD your God which He has given you. This option offers John Carroll immediate financial support and allows a tax deduction to the extent permitted by current tax laws. Gifts of Securities Contributions of mutual funds, publicly traded stocks, and bonds may enable donors to contribute a larger gift at a lesser cost. Transferring gifts of securities to John Carroll is easy and, if timed and planned carefully, can provide significant tax benefits. You will avoid paying the capital gains tax on the appreciation and will qualify for an income tax charitable deduction based on the fair market value of your securities on the date you made the gift. Bequests A bequest can be in the form of a specific gift of cash or property. Bequests can be made as sums or percentages. They may be structured to provide support to specific JCHS programs or can be given without restriction to best meet future needs. Every dollar that is given to JCHS through a bequest or other testamentary gift is fully deductible for federal estate tax purposes. Gifts in Kind Contributions of products, merchandise, equipment, or services can provide support for the school. If you or your company would be able to provide a service, please contact the school. Life Insurance Gifts of Real Property Donors may contribute land, buildings, leases, or other items of value. This option may enable John Carroll to acquire much-needed property to expand its boundaries or may serve as an investment for the school. Consider making John Carroll a beneficiary or partial beneficiary of your life insurance policy. You may also transfer ownership of a paid up policy that your family no longer needs. Charitable Remainder Trusts Memorial Gifts Memorial gifts offer an opportunity to remember a special family member, leader in the community, influential role model, or someone special in your life. The memorial gift can be made in any amount to honor a special someone who has passed away. Gift Matching Programs Ask your employer to match your contribution. Many corporations have gift matching programs and will match their employees’ contributions to nonprofit organizations. A Charitable Remainder Trust is a special irrevocable trust created from a donated amount that is held in trust and set up to pay income back to the donor and/or to family members during the term of the trust. At the end of the term or upon death of the donor, the assets remaining in the trust are distributed to charities specified by the donor. Personalized Scholarship Local businesses or individuals have the opportunity to create the criteria for scholarships, provide the funding, and select the recipient. The scholarship can be named after the business or individual if so desired. How do I make a donation? Please keep in mind that John Carroll is funded entirely by our students’ tuition and your philanthropy. We are a 501(c) 3 organization, and all donations are tax deductible. For your convenience, a donor card and envelope are enclosed, or donations may be made online. Donations are accepted via check, credit card, or by making multiple payments. If you would like further information on making a pledge, donating gifts of securities, property, life insurance, bequest, charitable remainder trust, establishing a memorial scholarship, or making an in-kind donation, please contact Jennifer Trefelner, Director of the Office of Institutional Advancement.
