MISSION STATEMENT
The Arizona Flycasters Club is a non-profit tax-exempt organization that is dedicated to encourage, support, and
educate its members and the community in the sport of fly fishing, the techniques of fly fishing, and the ethics
of “catch and release” which promotes the conservation of fish and their habitats. The organization’s activities
also encourage friendship, enjoyment, sportsmanship, and safety.

As I write, I think of my next trip to Alamo Lake. The bass were hitting all day yesterday. I’ll be tying poppers and gurglers for my next trip. It’s September, and that usually means good bass fishing in Arizona, and hopefully the beginning of cooler temps.

September also means the return of our basic fly tying classes. The theme this year is
bass flies. If you are new to fly tying, these classes are for you. All materials, equipment, and instructors are furnished by the club. If you are a seasoned tier, come
down and have some fun, show off your skills, help a new tier, and make a friend.
Classes will be held on September 3rd, 4th, 8th, 10th, 15th, 17th, 22nd, 24th, and
29th, at the Sunnyslope Community Center from 7:00 to 9:00 PM.

Our casting classes also return in September. The first class will be on Saturday, September 13th from 9:00 to 11:00 AM at Steele Indian School Park. Our classes offer
basic instruction for beginners, and opportunities for more advanced casters to hone
their skills. Enter the park at 3rd Street and Indian School Road.

Our guest speaker at the September general meeting is our own Barney Rouse. Join

the White Mountains and southern Colorado.

We have our next NAU Scholarship Fundraiser coming up on Tuesday, September 16th,
from 6:00 to 9:00 PM at the Yogurtini store on the northeast corner of 59th Avenue
and Thunderbird Road. Sources say salted caramel is back.
Please note the September outing to Hawley Lake has been cancelled due to low water. However, the October outing to the San Juan River is almost here. I am the trip
host/coordinator for this premier outing. The dates for this year’s trip are Saturday,
October 18th through Wednesday, October 22nd. I will not take sign-ups in October,
as I must submit final reservations by September 11th. If you have not signed up
and paid by September 11th, you will miss a fantastic trip. The cost is $275 per
person based on double occupancy and includes your New Mexico fishing license, buffet breakfast, and Liars’ Banquet. Please see me or page 5 of this newsletter for
more details.

Calling All Tiers: Let’s fill the October raffle with flies for the San Juan River trip.
We are asking you to donate flies in multiples of six. As you are tying, please tie a
few extra, or please check your fly boxes for any patterns that might be successful on
the San Juan. Let’s make it a raffle to remember. It is because of our membership
that we have such great raffles. For more information, please see page 4 of this

Our basic fly tying classes begin September 3rd and continue throughout the entire
month. Brian Mazoyer and his instructors are focusing on flies for bass fishing. We
are giving nine classes on the dates listed above. You will learn how to use a wide
range of materials and tools. The classes are suitable for those just starting to tie
flies. You can start the classes at any time. As always, there is no charge. The club
supplies all the materials and also has equipment for those in need.
All classes are held at the Sunnyslope Community Center from 7:00 to 9:00 PM. If you

Our own Barney Rouse will share some of his recent trout fishing adventures. Barney
doesn’t think twice about embarking on an 8-mile trek to reach some of the more remote streams of eastern Arizona and southern Colorado.
His presentations are always packed with stunning images of the back woods and essential information that will help you plan a safe and rewarding trip of your own.
Join us on September 11th and see and learn more about these amazing streams and
the strikingly beautiful fish they produce.
Casting Classes: September 13th and October 11th
Our casting classes begin September 13th. The classes are held at Steele Indian
School Park from 9:00 to 11:00 AM. You should enter the park from 3rd Street and
Indian School Road. We will be located at the far north end of the parking lot. We
will review the basics and provide suggestions for practice sessions. The club can supply equipment for those in need. There is no charge. Bring the family and enjoy the
fun. Remember, it will still be hot at this time of year, so bring water and sunscreen.
Our October 11th class will offer suggestions for casting on the San Juan River, just in
time for the club trip coming up October 18th through 22nd. As always, we also will
offer basic instruction for those just starting to learn casting. Ron Robinson also will
have his switch rods for you to try. Switch rods are great for fishing the moving waters of the San Juan.

Unfortunately, the club had to cancel the September outing to Hawley Lake. The
tribe has drained the lake; there is very little water. We have not received enough
interest from members to warrant scheduling an alternative outing this month.

Raffle Riffles
ARE YOU UP FOR A CHALLENGE?

We are dedicating the October raffle to San Juan flies and other merchandise that can
be used on the club trip that will take place October 18th through 22nd. We are challenging you fly tiers to tie as many San Juan flies as you can, in multiples of six, for
donation to the October raffle. Great San Juan patterns include the RS2, WD40,
midge larva, chocolate foam wing, pheasant tail, or your own favorite. Just select
your favorite pattern(s) and tie extras in multiples of six. I will bring extra fly boxes
as well as pill containers to the September general meeting. You can bring your flies
to either the September or October general meetings. Let's showcase our talents,
exhibit the diversity of flies that can be used on the San Juan, and equip our lucky
winners with some well-made, beautiful flies that could be used to catch a trophy
fish.
Also for the October meeting, I will raffle a Reddington, 9-foot, 4-weight, 4-piece rod
with tube. This is a great nymphing rod and has a lifetime warranty. It will be an
ideal rod for the San Juan for one of our lucky members.
You rose to the occasion! I asked for help, and you came through in replenishing our

San Juan
River Outing
October 18th-22nd

Our annual San Juan River trip is coming up October 18th through 22nd. I will take
signups and payments at the August and September general meetings. I will not take
signups at the October general meeting. The last day for signups and payments is
September 11th, as I have to have all money to the treasurer and make final arrangements for the trip by that date. If you have not signed up and paid by September
11th, you will miss a fantastic trip.
We will stay at Abe’s Motel & Fly Shop. The cost is $275 (double occupancy) and includes a wonderful breakfast buffet on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday
mornings, a very nice prime rib dinner at our Liar’s Banquet on Tuesday night, and a 5
-day New Mexico fishing license.
If you are camping, the cost is $109, which includes the breakfasts, banquet, and license. You will need to make your own arrangements with Abe’s to park your
camper; there will be plenty of room.
You also must buy a separate $5 per day parking permit because the river is located in
a state park. Permits can be purchased at any of the major parking areas. I usually
purchase 5 permits for $25 dollars on the first day so I don’t have to worry about purchasing a permit each day.
Remember to de-barb your hooks! The rangers sometimes randomly check anglers.
There are several local guides in the area for those of you interested in using a guide.
They will pick you up in the morning at Abe’s. Please call a guiding service now if you
want to book a guided trip, as reservations fill up fast for fall fishing trips. Here is a

Our club has many members who have fished the river. Utilize your fellow members
and their advice if you need help on the water. The river can be quite technical, as
the fish see thousands of flies.
A typical AFC day goes something like this: At 0630 hours, we start with the breakfast
buffet, share some company, plan our day, and then make our way to the various access points on the river. Lunch is on your own. Bring your lunch to the river or go
back to Abe’s. If you are like me and some of the other members, you will bring a
lunch and stay out all day. At the end of the day, most of the members like to fish
around the area of the river known as Texas Hole. At dark, we go back to the rooms.
Some members cook or barbeque outside their rooms, others head to the restaurants.
We share stories about the day and get ready for the next day on the water.
I also recommend that you attend our pre-trip meeting at the Sunnyslope Community
Center on October 14th at 7:00 PM. We will discuss several topics, including preparation and techniques to use on the river. Even if you cannot make the outing, this is a
good meeting to attend to obtain information on the river and fishing moving water.
This will be a fantastic fall fishing trip. Don’t miss this opportunity to fish a high

We’re still selling squares at $5 each (100 squares total) for a beautiful Fenwick, 7-1/2
foot, 6-weight, fiberglass rod with reel donated by a member of the Community of Grace
Lutheran Church in Peoria!
We’re about 30% full so there is plenty of time to purchase your squares. As soon as the
board is filled, we will have a drawing, and one lucky person will win the rod and reel!
