Both meetings are held at Wesley United Methodist Church. Prez Sez By Glen Miller Although the fall/winter rains have set in, the rivers are still at good levels for fishing. I hope some of you get in a few days of fishing before the end of the year. As for me, I'm going to try to go for a salmon on one of the south coast rivers or maybe do some fishing in the Willamette here close to town...we'll see. The winter steelhead will be arriving soon and the Alsea, Siuslaw, and a few other reasonably close coastal rivers will entice some of us. I'm thinking we're about due for a year of normal steelhead fishing weather (steady rains with some breaks and no long term fog events) in Jan and Feb this season. We can only hope! I’d like to invite all club members to our annual planning meeting on Saturday, Dec 5th from 9-12 at the Vida Community Center. We'll discuss and plan many of our 2016 activities and go over issues that need more discussion than we have time for at our monthly board meetings. All club members are invited to this meeting. It's a great time for many of you who are new to the club to meet our club leaders and learn more about the club. At the end of the meeting we'll have a potluck lunch before heading home. Jen Acosta will be sending out an e-mail the week before with directions and more information about the potluck. Hope to see you all this Thursday night! Our October Auction this year was a tremendous success. At our board meeting last week, we reviewed the results. Our net profit was as high as we've ever had. The food was excellent and we all thought that the venue, although a bit tight, worked well. Attendance was definitely up and everyone seemed to have a great time together. I'd like to thank Marv Clemons, the auction committee, and everyone who showed up and bid on the many available auction items. Everyone did their part to once again make this a fantastic event! Cascade Family Flyfishers Annual Holiday Party December 17, 2015 As happens most years, our November meeting is on the 3rd Thursday of the month as I doubt many folks would show up on the 4th Thursday which is Thanksgiving. As we've done now for the last several years, the meeting program will be photos from many of the club outings and other activities in 2015. Roz and Katherine have been hard at work on this show and you won't want to miss seeing where your fellow club members fished this last year. 6 pm to 9 pm Roaring Rapids Pizza Parlor Riverside Restaurant I recently renewed our building use agreement with the Wesley United Methodist Church for use of their facilities again in 2016. I've only received positive comments about our new meeting location so we'll be right there again for all our meetings next year. At the November meeting we'll be holding our annual elections. Club officers and three new board members will be elected. Prior to the balloting, nominations from the floor will be called, allowing for a response. Then all club members will have an opportunity to vote and elect the officers and directors. Pizza, salad bar and soft drinks will be provided, beer and wine will be available for purchase Optional: bring a wrapped gift (not to exceed $15 to exchange) and a food item for Food for Lane County A raffle will be held for appropriate fly fishing items Contact Rod Roth for additional information at 541/342-6745 or email [email protected] 2 Being an old swabby and coastie, the conversation around the table reminded me of being with a group from the Navy or Coast Guard swapping sea stories. All four of the members were veteran fly fishers with much experience and travel to exotic places to fish with really great stories to share. The two attributes I noticed especially were that all were good listeners, and had great senses of humor. We all agreed to meet again for breakfast at 8:00 in the morning decide when, where, and what to use to fish for the day and return to the restaurant again at 6:30 or 7:00 for dinner, lying, and good humor. Diamond Lake Outing Report By Marv Clemons The weather report was bad. I had been a bit late in arriving at the lodge due to completing the final stages of finishing the auction activities left from the night before, such as taking the few remaining items that had not been sold to St. Vincent DePauls for donation, assembling my fishing equipment, readying the drift boat for seaworthiness, packing a lunch for the road and gassing the car. At 10:45 I was on the road looking forward to one of my favorite outings. I was looking forward to this outing especially because there were new members of the club that I had not yet fished with and other than meeting them at club meetings I knew nothing about. You never know. As planned at 8:00 am the CFF crew were in the restaurant having oatmeal, eggs, bacon, sausage, toast hash browns and lots of coffee and tea. We all decided to head for the south end boat launch and most of the flies included chironomids provided by Bob W., and woolly buggers in black, brown and, olive with a size 16-14 prince or other small nymph as the dropper. Casting and stripping using a slow troll both work with pontoons, float tubes, and from a By the time I had arrived at the resort, it was getting dark drift boat. so I took my gear to my room, grabbed my fly rod and a box of flies and headed for the dock in front of the resort a The weather had held and the whole group fished right spot that had been productive in years past. As I left my through until nearly dark. All caught fish. Most between room, I noticed this tall slim gentleman with a big smile 12 and 14” with a few caught by Curtis and Bob W., Rick, approaching who called out my name. It was Rich and Bob O. pushing 18-20. Marvin, the awesome host, Meltebeke a relatively new member of the club. We caught the 12 – 14 inchers. We all arrived Back at the great meal and exchanged pleasantries and he filled me in as to the others restaurant at just about dark for another th that had already arrived: Curtis Erickson, a veteran Diamond plan for the fishing on Sunday the 24 . All agreed that the Lake fisher; Bob O’Brian another relatively new member who fishing had been great due to the weather holding, but the looked familiar but I couldn’t come up a name for – and he catching had been slow. Due to the recent success of club never would give it to me as he, like Rich, had met me often members fishing Crane Prairie Bob W. Bob O. and Rich at earlier CFF meetings and felt I should have remembered decided that they would like to meet for breakfast at 7:45 his name. The fifth member, Bob Wolfe (chironomid guru) and head for Crane and fish there for the day. Curtis, Tim was already on the water. Rich and I walked down to the and me felt we would stay at Diamond and fish. I told the dock and I decided to use a fly I had attached while on the three leaving for Crane I would stop by on my way home Coastal Lakes outing and used for bass in Sutton Lake. It and see how they had done and fish if it wasn’t yet dark. was a Gurdle Bug. I cast out and used the same strip All agreed with the plan. rhythm I had used for bass but without the same positive results. As I fished I had a constant refrain from Rich telling me how he was depending on me to show him how to fish the lake, what to use, and where to fish and even how to hold my mouth while fishing. Pressure, pressure, pressure. (All in good humor of course.) I learned later that he had had probably more experience at Diamond Lake than I had. It wasn’t long until another of our group arrived on the pier, Tim Hood. Tim seemed to know quite a bit about Diamond as he too had fished the lake before. (Continued on Page 4) With Tim and Rich and myself all accounted for, we were waiting for Bob W, Curtis, and Bob O and by the time we had walked back to our rooms Curtis, and Bob O had arrived and as far as we knew Bob W. still remained on the water. In the Outing Planning materials I had sent, the agenda for Friday the 23rd was to meet in the Lodge restaurant at 6:30 for dinner and plan the next two days activities. We then took care of any remaining unpacking and headed for the lodge to wait for Bob W. around the nice big, warm fireplace. Dinner at the Lodge was as always excellent but what made it excellent for me was the opportunity to get to know the four relatively new members and reunite with Curtis with whom I had often fished. L-R Tim Hood, Bob O’Brian, Bob Wolfe and Rich Meltebeke 3 Diamond Lake Continued from page 3 Sunday morning on the water was beautiful with sun breaks and clouds and warm in mid 60’s. As good weather forecasters often do, I dipped my finger in my mouth and stuck it into the air and proclaimed that there would be no rain forthcoming today. I also gave the air my trained sniff test and proclaimed that the air had no rain essence and would not come. 15 minutes later I was sitting in my drift boat in the middle of one of the worst down pours I had ever experienced. So much for deep scientifically based predictions. The upside of the experience was that when the rain began so did the fish start to bite. I love to fish in the rain. I caught nine fish in 30 minutes all on a brown woolly bugger with the small nymph dropper. I then switched to a size 18 “Trout Candy” chironomid tied by Bob W. and caught four more. None of the 13 fish were huge. Sixteen was the largest with the others again in the 12 to 14 inch range. All fought well and seemed to be enjoying the rain as much as I was. At noon I continued my plan and pulled in, trailered the boat and headed for Crane Prairie. The trip took just under two hours and when I arrived those who left early from Diamond Lake were trailering their pontoons and boats and were ready to head for home. They all had taken some nice fish in the 18 to 20 inch range and were very satisfied with their performance. It was a bit late for me to launch and fish as it was nearly dark so I wished each member safe travels home and hit the road myself. It was a good trip and all went well. There was much camaraderie and laughs, all caught fish, we enjoyed great food, and all arrived home safely. What more could we have asked for? Marv Clemons, Trip Host Bob Wolfe deep in concentration In Rich Meltebeke’s stripping basket 4 Fall River Outing By Fred Acosta Most of the members that attended the outing arrived on Thursday and stayed at either Twin Lakes cabins or RV park. Katherine and Frank Pavia and Steve Wasilewski stayed in the cabins . The rest stayed who camped at the RV park included; Curtis and Paula Erickson, Dennis Munroe, Daniel Rogers, and Pete Szekely. Jen, my lovely wife, was also kind enough to join me and keep the trailer safe when we were out fishing. Trese Slocum showed for the day on Saturday but went home that evening. Kat and Frank tried their luck at South Twin on Friday and hooked into a couple of nice Rainbows. On Saturday, the majority of the members put in at Crane Prairie and had some luck but the winds were blowing so strong that most had major problems and soon gave up and came into shore. Still Frank managed to hook a few and Kat had a big ol' honker which took her into the snags and broke her line. Daniel and I headed to Fall river because of the wind. Daniel caught a couple of nice ones, with one in the 17' - 18.” range, and as I was taking a picture of it, it squirmed out of his hand, fell on the bank and made it back to the water safely, we think. Daniel Rogers on the Fall River That evening we had dinner and most of us gathered by the fire to eat marshmallows and tell fish stories. And of course the 20 percent chance of rain we had in the forecast actually happened. We tried our best to stay out there as long as possible as it was just a light rain but got stronger as the night when on, so everyone took shelter. We made a plan to meet the next morning and head out to Fall River. The next morning we were awakened by gun fire as deer season was in full swing. Run Bambi Run!!!!! Kat, Frank, Steve, Dennis, Daniel and I headed out to fish the Fall as everyone else decided to try Crane Prairie one more time. No one had any luck on the Fall, as we tried different locations with the same result. No report came back from the members at Crane that day. All in all, it was a good time, it was fun trying a new location with different options. We had so many lakes and rivers to choose from that Daniel and I even took a swing at the Deschutes River above Wickiup lake. We heard one of out neighbor campers hooked into a 24” brown trout and lost another one that looked like it could have swallowed the 24 incher. We witnessed thousands of Kokanee Salmon spawning in another arm of the Deschutes. I look forward to the trip next year, and probably back to the Metolius river as well. 5 Outings are another big draw and bring in many new participants who usually join. Outings offered during this Third Quarter included: East Lake, Coastal Lakes, Fall River, Alsea River and Diamond Lake. The fund raising auction offers a number of drift trips on local rivers provided by experienced club members and includes both rivers – McKenzie, Willamette, Deschutes, Crooked, Alsea, Siletz, Umpqua and Siuslaw. Still waters include: East, Wickiup, Paulina, Crescent, Odell, Crane Prairie, Davis, Horton Pond, Hills Creek, Cougar, Blue River, Cottage Grove and Dorena reservoirs. CASCADE FAMILY FLY FISHERS (CFF) Third Quarter Club Report to Oregon Council International Federation of Fly Fishers The CFF just keeps moving. Our new digs for our meetings and activities is now in the activity center at the Wesley United Methodist Church at the corner of Oakway and Cal Young Streets in Eugene. With the change of venue also came the necessity of changing our regular meeting days. Board meetings are now on the second Thursday of the month from 6:00 to 7:00 PM. General Membership meetings are on the 4th Thursday of the month. Doors open at 6:15 with demonstration fly tying. The meeting starts at 7:00 and continues to 9:00 PM. Community Events include: Demonstration Casting and Fly Tying at the annual Sport and Boat Show in Eugene; ORCFFF Fly Tying and Fishing Expo. in Albany, Ore. , The International Federation of Fly Fishers Fair in Bend, Ore.; Rehabilitation of the Delta Pond Complex in Eugene; Demonstration Fly Tying and Casting at the annual McKenzie River Antique Boat Show at Eagle Rock Lodge on the McKenzie River and the McKenzie River Chainsaw Art Competition in Blue River, Or. Regular demonstration fly tying and casting at various fly fishing businesses such as Cabelas, Home Waters, and Caddis Fly are also provided. The club has had the good fortune of increasing in membership this quarter from 87 to our current membership of 104. November is the month that new Club Officers, Board Members, and Committee Chairs are selected. We are in the process of recruiting for those positions and encourage those interested to let any one in the current leadership know so we will have a full ballot from which to choose. We will be coming into the year with a healthy budget after a very successful club auction in 2014 and look forward to another on October 22 of 2015. This will give the club the funds to plan and schedule a full calendar of events including, outings, classes, club picnic, holiday party, youth activities, programs, conservation projects, monthly club raffles, and public service activities. The CFF website is now up and running as promised. Be sure and check it out at cascadefamilyflyfishers.com . The two community (Professional) activities that provided the most exposure for the CFF this Third Quarter were the ORCFFF Fly Tying and Fishing Exposition held in Albany, Or. and the International Fly Fishing Fair in Bend, Or. The Cascade Club provided 36 volunteers for the Albany show who worked on the Bucket Raffle and provided the services of the “Red Apron Brigade” who wore red aprons and One of the reasons for the increase in membership has walked the floor selling raffle tickets increasing ticket sales been the quality of the presentations made at our monthly many fold. The set up for the Tiers Reception was also the general membership meetings as well as other group responsibility of the CFF. The same was true for the CFF activities which bring the membership together. These involvement at the IFFF show in Bend. 22 volunteers have included: Bob Wolfe – “Why Fish Chironomids”. Bob is provided similar services as were called for in Albany, a master Chironomid fisherman who includes a great Power having the same result of increasing the revenue from the Point Presentation which includes the life cycle of the raffle activities for the benefit of the IFFF. Other well attended activities included the annual club Respectfully submitted, picnic held on the shore of the McKenzie River with 71 Marv Clemons members attending and “A Night on the River” held at Taylor Landing Boat Launch also on the McKenzie River with many new members attending. These group activities provide the opportunity for beginners and veteran fly fishers to fish together, give & take instruction, share a great lunch and perhaps even catch some fish. The “Fly Tying” classes offered are scheduled by the level of skill of the participant from beginner to veteran. Many of the expert tiers in the club assist the lead instructor which provides individual attention to those who request assistance. The classes fill fast. 6 A wealth of items were provided for this event; cluding the fifteen member provided - ½ day float trips, the many full day trips with gourmet lunches By Marv Clemons offered by club members and professional guides, the lodging and fishing opportunities offered by Eagle Rock Lodge, McKenzie Resort and B&B, McKenzie River Cottages, Wild Horse Casino, Mill The outstanding success of our auction this year is Casino, and Three Rivers Casino and the other the result of an Auction Planning Committee that was commercial donors including Takota’s Restaurant, enthusiastic, dedicated, and willing to take on the Home Waters Fly Shop, The Caddis Fly Fly Shop, responsibility of contacting our membership to solicit Hareline Dubbing, Fred Meyers Inc., and Cabelas their attendance and their willingness to donate high Sporting Goods. Clemons and Marv Clemons, Auction Chair. This group started planning July 21, 2015 and was there Even though it was the last event of the evening, the right on through the auction on October 22. Oral Auction was the most fun and another financial success. With Glenn Miller and Randy Beard as the This event is the primary fund raiser for the Club two auctioneers, the bids kept coming in with lots of and the 2015 auction did not disappoint. The laughs, “oos and aahs”, “go for its”, and “I’m goings committee implemented a new process this year to sell its” which netted nearly $4000.00 from the which accomplished the intended purpose of Oral Auction Table alone. increasing revenue. This process was called “Buy it Now". The items offered at this table were high end but not quite high enough to be offered during the After the final bids were in, items bagged, and bills “Oral” auction. The table was supervised by Dave paid, the awesome Auction Planning Committee Prindel and was similar to the silent auction where again jumped in for the venue take down and clean bidders could continue to raise their bid until no up. Every committee member did their part before, more bids were offered. At this table if the person during, and after the event all of which resulted in a really wanted the item, they could “Buy it Now” and great success. Thank you all and let’s do it again in pay the appraised value of the item and take it with 2016. them on the spot. The ½ day float trips were offered through this process with 15 trips sold at $80.00 each; which turned out to be an excellent revenue source. Some of the other items offered at this table were many excellent fly rods, reels, new “IFFF” vest, boxes of flies tied by the professional fly tiers in the club, a pontoon boat, float tube and great art work in the form of Fly Plates framed by our own Hal Comstock, Vic Hadley and Rod Roth with flies tied by Skip Hosfield, Vic Hadley, Mike Marlatt, Rod Roth, Steve Overall as well as many other items. This innovation for 2015 was a great addition to our overall auction operation. Annual Auction Report As we all know, if the food is bad, the remaining parts of any event just don’t seem to have much pizazz. Well from all reports it is no wonder this event was a stunning success as the meal was judged as “outstanding”. Our caterer was again “Patty’s Catering” and they did not disappoint. Excellent food, abundant portions, hot, and served beautifully. Thanks much Patty’s Catering crew. 7 CFF Auction —- 2015 8 Winter Fly Tying Classes 2015 Introduction to Fly Tying Tuesday Nights—6:30 to 8:30 pm. It was a great year for our club members to fish together as a group, and had many enjoyable trips this year. Special thanks go to our Outings Hosts of 2015: Marv Clemons, who hosted three trips this year — the Alsea River trip, Coastal Lakes, and Diamond Lake. Rod Roth, who hosted two trips this year — Carmen Reservoir and East Lake. Glen Neal and Bill Burleigh who hosted the Horton Pond outing. Pete Szekely, for hosting the Hemlock Lake outing. Glenn Miller, for hosting the Erma Bell outing. Dave Prindel and Randy Beard who hosted the south Umpqua outing in lieu of the John Day trip. And Jen and Fred Acosta who hosted the Fall River outing. All members who went on these trips know how much fun they are. The outing host handled the organization of the trip, prepping participants on directions, what fish were there, what flies to bring, and any special requirements of the area. They went the distance in making everyone feel welcomed and prepared with breakfasts, dinners, desserts, and social times. A huge applause goes to them for their leadership. Special thanks go to those who arranged CFF unsponsored outings: Bob Wolfe and Rich Murray at Cottage Grove Pond for chironomid fishing and Glenn Miller for McKenzie River and South Umpqua river pontoon floats. Because of these hosts it has been a great year for CFF fishing and a great year for our outings. Thanks go to all of you. 2016 is just around the corner with new outings planned.
