Owner of Galloupʼs Slide Inn, Madison River Montana Kelly has been a fly fishing guide for 27 years. He started guiding in Michigan at the age of 16. He started his fly shop The Troutsman in Traverse City, Michigan, in 1981. He continued to run The Troutsman until the spring of 2002 when he moved to Montana. He is an author and lecturer. Kelly is also one of the hosts of Fly Fish TV (www.flyfishtv.com) on the Outdoor Life Network. Kelly Galloup [1] |PRESIDENT’S COLUMN by Tim Scott I heard a statistic that stated material items, purchased or otherwise, bring the person happiness for only 3 to 6 months, but experiencing a joyful event can a person last a life time. How true this is, gadgets come and go, but remembering a life changing event will stay with you your entire life. I can remember, as if it was yesterday, every detail of the first trout I ever caught when I was eleven; the first salmon I caught on a fly I tied 16 years ago. I can recite every detail of fishing Slough Creek in Yellowstone four years ago and seeing the first brown drake hatch on the Ausable eight years ago. Being active in this club has lead to most of my memories of fishing and I hope the experiences you have through the club will bring you a lifetime of memories as well. As I met more and more new members at last month’s meeting and at the Beginning Fly Tying Class, I wonder what memories the club will cultivate for them. One experience I will never forget was the time I headed North on a Friday after a bad week of work. I had an open invitation to stay at my buddy Steve’s place on the North Branch of the Ausable. Steve and I were going to fish hard for a couple of days; knowing this would clear my head. I pulled in to Steve’s at later that night; we had a few beers and went to sleep. The next day we did a little morning fishing, saw some friends, hit a few fly shops and scouted the river. That evening we met up with John Mangona and his cousin, who were up to fish. Steve suggested a spot he had not fished in 20 years on the North Branch. This shows you how vast the Ausable river system is, when a guy can fish there for over 30 years and it takes 20 years to go back to a spot. So we set out looking for the first Brown Drake hatch. We got to the spot. We looked up river and down. John and his cousin started down and Steve and I started up. Nothing was happening so we wandered the river, talking and discovering bugs, sculpins and such. Then it started. We noticed Drakes appearing on the river in a messy clump as they pop through their exoskeletons; the fish noticed too. The glass smooth water was broken by noses and water rings as fish slowly and deliberately ate the Drakes. One after the next fish rose for their supper. Soon the invasion of Drakes overtook the rising fish. From bank to bank small drake sailboats floated down river as their wings straightened and dried. We watched as bigger fish broke their inhibitions and moved out of cover to feeding lanes. For the [2] moment, the fishing was perfect. Steve and I watched a 25-plus inch brown feed in a run under some cedars. I had two shots at that fish; I missed the first time and had him eat the second time, only to spit the hook. We sat and watched the feeding frenzy and the sailing Drake armada. Steve and I landed some other nice fish; including a 15 inch brookie by Steve. It was time to go back for the big boy. This time it was Steve’s turn to show the pup how it was done. A few false casts and Steve put the fly over the fish. No take. Two false casts and the fly was out over the fish, this time he ate. The Big boy launched out of the water three or four times as Steve’s reel sang. I moved to net the fish and get a picture. A few seconds later – snap – the tippet breaks. We both laughed and headed back to the truck. Pushing the armada of Drakes as we waded back to the truck, it was a night I will never forget. Get out on a river and start your experiences today you won’t forget it. -ts PAGE 3 RANTS, NEWS, AND REVIEWS Need Volunteers! Thank goodness an end is in sight and its time to get ready for opening day. One great way to do that is to attend the annual SJRVFF Auction on April 20th. Last year the auction was a success thanks to all of you. The money we raised was used to support the Clubʼs activities throughout the year, including the outings, fly tying classes, the stream improvements, the donations for stockings in our local waters and speakers. In preparation for this yearʼs auction Iʼve sent out over 60 letters to tackle companies, lodges and guides asking for donations. While many companies have been generous and provide great gear, discounts, magazines and other goodies, the keys to a great auction are good attendance and the great stuff that you bring. Your donated items, whether they are an extra rod or reel, a dozen flies you tied, art, or whatever you think may be valuable to other members are vital to the auctionʼs success. If you know someone who runs a lodge, guide service, travel agency or tackle company we would really appreciate your asking them to donate to the auction. Would you be willing to mentor a couple of our newer members on the local waters for a day? You would be surprised how much they would appreciate having someone show them the ropes. When in doubt call me or another of the board members. If you have something really special let us know in advance so we can highlight it in the next newsletter to build interest in the auction. Remember, the better the auction the better we can be as a club. So circle April 20th on your calendar and invite a friend to come along, preferably a very, very rich one.
