Welcome to 2015! We
have turned the corner
and are looking forward
to the possibilities ahead
this coming fishing season.
Mike Grinwis has a series
of great programs lined up
for the next few months.
We are running out of
slots, so if you have a special program you would
like to see let us know
very soon. There is a lot
of opportunity to volunteer, play, and federate in
the near future. We have
a cub scout tying event
this week, several shows
coming up, (a chance to

some good times. Thanks
to all of the Board members this year for making
this a fun and productive
year. Mark, Mike, Bob
and Dennis are a great
pleasure to work with and
have made this job easy.
Oh, by the way we will be
looking for volunteers for
next years board, so
please start thinking about
what position you would
like to fill. Hope to see
you all Tuesday, remember we are in a different

research that he is doing. I
don’t have any more details
on the topic at this time, so
you will just have to show
up and watch the presentation. This month starts our
winter Sunday Tying Nights
at Piazzano’s Restaurant in
the basement banquet room
from 6:30pm to 8:30pm.
The first night is January
18th so bring all your tying

gear and come out for a fun
night. You are also welcome to just come out and
watch as well. It is always a
good time.

A couple of young guys were fishing at their special pond off the beaten track when out of the bushes jumped the
game warden.
Immediately, one of the boys threw his rod down and started running through the woods like a bat out of hell and hot
on his heels came the game warden.
After about a half mile, the guy stopped and stooped over with his hands on his thighs to catch his breath and the
game warden finally caught up to him.
"Let's see yer fishin license, boy!" the warden gasped.
With that, the guy pulled out his wallet and gave the game warden a valid fishing license.
"Well, son," said the Game Warden. "You must be about as dumb as a box of rocks! You don't have to run from me if
you have a valid license!"
"Yes sir," replied the young feller. "But my friend back there, well, he don't have one..."
New Trout Species
By: Mike Grinwis
Okay, I was perusing Google+ this evening, & saw a teaser and the link to a story
on ScienceDaily about a new trout species, so I thought I'd pass it along.
Thoughts? Comments? Road trip?

A new fish species, Salmo kottelati, has been described from the Alak1r Stream
draining to Mediterranean Sea in Anatolia. The new species is currently only
known from this specific locality. It belongs to the Salmonidae family, which includes salmons, trouts, chars, graylings and whitefishes.

Cub Scout Fly Tying
By: Bob Bawden
The bitter cold couldn’t stop nine members of the Red Cedar Fly Fishers from convening at Holt’s Washington Woods
elementary school on Wednesday evening to spend a few hours with 12 cub scouts. Mark Noel organized the get together to help the scouts fulfill their requirement of constructing something from materials other than wood. What better
things to make than flies?
Mark gave a brief presentation about fly fishing then we split up and worked with individual scouts on tying a wooly bugger
and a foam spider. Although there were many levels of dexterity among the scouts, all tied at least two flies and were
pleased with their accomplishment. Quite a few parents showed up and seemed as interested as the scouts.
And in the interest of federating (one of the goals of the Red Cedar Fly Fishers) several of us volunteers met at Buddies in
Holt to debrief and share some beverages after the meeting.

NEXT MEETING: September 12, 1980 at 7:30 PM. Meeting will commences with socializing and fly tying with a business meeting (short) at 8:00 PM. Annual dues in the Red Cedar Fly Fishers, of $5.00, is due and payable at the meeting. Your dues in the RCFF is not included in your annual dues to the Federation. We will be discussing and planning
a fall salmon fishing trip.
FROM OUR PRESIDENT: As I look forward to a new season, I cannot help but look back through the past year and
reflect upon a few of the accomplishments of the RCFF.
We started the year with the membership falling to twenty two, by summer of this year, our numbers are back in the
thirties again.
Around the first of the year we started our now annual fly tying class. This year the class was much improved under
the leadership of Harry Barnes. Those of us who attended any number of the classes really came to appreciate all of
the good things that Harry had to pass on to us as well as our new fly tiers.
Sometime last winter there were two very heroic trips taken by two small groups of our members. The first of these
was to Ohio to help some of our fellow Federators plant Vibert boxes in the Mad River system. The second was the
first of two trips by our members to the Bamboo Rod Revival in Detroit. These trips were very instrumental in our
club winning the 1980 Mid-West Council FFF Membership Award for recruiting more Federation members than any
other club in our council. I feel that this award is due for the most part of the efforts of Jim Jarrett and Tony Petrella.
Another important step taken last year was the upgrading of our monthly newsletter. The initial job was tackled solo
by Bob Juluis and is now in the capable hands of Dan Cogan.
The success of the last year was enhanced by the leadership of John Wylie. Things ran smoothly because John was
always two steps ahead making sure that they did.
It was with this brief look back that I begin to look to the future. Our conservation committee under the leadership
of John Ecklund has begun to formulate a project under the watchful eye of Ray White. We can only hope that the
new board of directors, with the enthusiasm that they have shown me and with help from us all, can turn this year
into one as successful as the last.
CONSERVATION COMMITTEE: Anyone interested in being involved in an electrofishing project should reserve the
weekends of October 11 and October 18. We are going to try to estimate a local fish population and gather data for
possible future study. Everyone is guaranteed to catch their limit if they use the right fly pattern. The will be more
details at our first meeting.
FROM THE EDITOR: Contributors are welcome. We will try to convince Harry Barnes to write a monthly fly tying
column. I will try to include a book review, and will also try to include a summary of the board of directors’ meetings.
