ANNUAL REPORT-- FINANCIAL OVERVIEW
HONOR ROLL OF DONORS
Aloha!
Dr. Oscar Chan and
Bro. Bernard Ploeger
share a congratulatory
moment after
signing an
agreement to
partner in offering
an MBA degree
in Macau.
Each fall those of us in academia enjoy a renewal as new students come to campus for
orientation, settle into the residence halls and embark upon their college career. The start of
the semester is punctuated by our traditional academic convocation where our incoming
students and faculty formally pledge to work together in the years ahead. In this issue
we explore the mentor-student relationship that extends often far beyond the classroom
and is emblematic of a Chaminade education.
This fall began with not only ceremony but excitement as we marked the second consecutive year of record high
enrollments. This increase in new full time undergraduates came in spite of adopting tougher academic entrance
requirements. Of note, a full 49 percent of our first year students and 55 percent of the transfers are science, nursing or
premed/prehealth majors. When day undergraduates are combined with our graduate students, online learning
community and those served at outreach centers, Chaminade currently educates more than 3,000 students.
This fall we welcomed our second cohort of nursing students—and what a pleasure it is to watch our students,
bedecked in Chaminade blue scrubs, grace our hallways and classrooms. A generous $497,000 grant from
the E.L.Wiegand Foundation for state-of-the art human patient simulators will ensure that our nursing students
get the most advanced training and preparation available.
In September we dedicated the newly renovated Eiben Hall which houses our Interior Design, Communication and
Fine Arts programs. This fall also saw the signing a “Memorandum of Understanding” with the Macau Institute of
Management to jointly offer an English language MBA program there.
As we prepare for the season of thanksgiving, we are so grateful to our faculty, staff, alumni, board volunteers,
donors and partners in the community for helping achieve our mission: to be the impetus for change and growth
in individuals and in our society.
Blessings,
Bro. Bernard J. Ploeger, SM, PhD

students.
There are two traditions that Chaminade faculty have ceremonially held
for students, a beginning and an end, that mark college life. At the end
of fall academic convocation, faculty members dressed in regalia form a
gauntlet outside of the event. New students are the first to leave the
audience. The faculty welcome the new students into the Chaminade
community of scholars as learners with applause and cheers. The students,
dressed casually, seem surprised, unsure of the journey ahead.
Four years later, more or less, the students are graduating.
Dressed in their own graduation robes, they leave the commencement
exercises after the faculty. Before the graduates see their families and
friends, they are first greeted by the faculty gauntlet once again. The
moment is filled with exuberance, sometimes tears and with lei, as the
faculty welcome the graduates now as colleagues and congratulate
them on their achievements. It is a poignant awakening that marks
transformation. The tradition speaks to community and to relationships
built through faculty and student relationships.
This is the story of three of those relationships – emblematic of the
multitude of stories that have built community through the years.
Deep Waters
Biology professor, Ron Iwamoto, has carried the mace at graduation for
about 25 years. The privilege belongs to him because he currently serves
as Chaminade’s longest, continuous faculty member, non-stop for about
44 years. When this “local boy” from Kaimuki, first arrived on campus
in 1967, male teachers wore ties, priests wore collars, and nuns,
novitiates and seminarians were a natural part of the student body.
Iwamoto, who graduated from Punahou in 1959, attained his BA in
History from Northwestern University and achieved his MS in Zoology
and MEd in Educational Foundations from the University of HawaiiManoa, helped pioneer Chaminade’s fledging biology department.
“I always wanted to help students learn. Their satisfaction from
accomplishing what they thought was impossible, heard in their words
and viewed in their facial expressions, are my golden moments,” he said.
Combing through albums that span decades of biology club and classes,
one finds countless photos of beaches and hiking trails populated with
students, enthralled with Hawaii’s natural habitat. “I love the ocean and,
from days as a child went fishing and diving,” he said. Studying tidal
pools, hiking hidden lava trails, or camping under ironwood fir trees,
students were infused with Iwamoto’s gusto for science.
One such student, Henry Gomes ’74, is now Chaminade’s director of
Native Hawaiian Partnerships and former associate provost. The 1969
Damien graduate began as an accounting major, but Iwamoto opened
Henry Gomes said Professor Iwamoto knew how to mālama the student
and inspired him to be a biology major.

of self-discovery and in
their professional growth,”
said Professor Davidson.

his eyes to the wonderment of biology. Through his involvement with
Iwamoto, Gomes discovered a love for biology as a discipline. He went on
to complete a double major in English and Biology at Chaminade, and
then his MS in Biology at Bowling Green State University. “Ron was the
real reason that I went into biology,” Gomes said. “He was down-to-earth,
knowledgeable, and he knew how to truly mālama (care for) students.”
At Iwamoto’s invitation, Gomes returned to Chaminade to teach
biology and help with the biology club. A precious part of the
university’s history, the club became a place of immersion which focused
primarily on ’ike (knowledge) with opportunities for cultural exchanges
and teaching of local ways in a context of family spirit or ’ohana.
“One of the best ways to retain students is to involve them in social
activities at school. We used the biology club,” Iwamoto said.
Sharing a long list of alumni throughout the community, he continued,
“Our alums are the best.” Some of the best blessings for him have been
when alumni such as Henry Gomes, David Coleman ’75, the Humanities’
dean, and Frank Bailey ’94 (history professor) returned to teach. The
professor continues to be passionate about teaching and his students.
When he carries the mace, he exemplifies the history and philosophical
foundations of Chaminade well.
Justice Seekers
There are two women from two different parts of the globe whose lives
have become entwined at Chaminade because of academic scholarship
and a thirst for justice. In the beginning, one was the teacher, advisor
and mentor; the other was student and mentee. Now they are colleagues
and friends.
Janet Davidson, PhD, hails from Memphis. As an assistant professor
of Criminology and Criminal Justice at Chaminade, she focuses on the
sociological side of the Criminal Justice profession. Her discipline is
criminology, which deals with the impact of laws, in contrast to Criminal
Justice, which concentrates on the technical applications of the law.
Davidson earned a BA and MA in Sociology, followed by her PhD in
Sociology with a specific focus on crime, law and deviance from the
University of Hawaii-Manoa. She began teaching at Chaminade as an
6

adjunct in 1999 and as a full time professor in 2005. Galvanizing her
choice of discipline was the inequities she observed when growing up
in the South. Hawaii’s cultural richness and diversity struck chords of
rightness in her heart. Her appetite for analysis and scholarship, driven
by her sense of justice, propelled her to a position of respect in her
field. Widely published, she found Chaminade to be a good fit
because it promotes the discussion of social justice issues due to
its Catholic Marinist foundation.
Lucy Zhang, BS ’09 and MSCJ ’11, graduated in American Samoa
from South Pacific Academy in 2005. She came to Chaminade at age 18
with dreams to become an attorney. Momentum came from experiencing
the prejudice of growing up as a minority including teasing and
discrimination from her peers, which felt hurtful and oppressive. Assigned
to a Criminology / Criminal Justice cohort and to Professor Davidson as
her adviser, Zhang was a little intimidated by Davidson at first. Davidson
had a reputation for strong academics. Zhang avoided her introductory
class in the first semester but finally decided to take the class.
A class video on the impact of poverty in a plea bargaining case caught
her attention and pointed to inequities. “It made an impression on me
that reminded me of why I wanted to take the career path I’ve chosen,”
said Zhang. Her career path became a vocation. Zhang took every class
she could from Davidson and found her to be an invaluable mentor and
advisor. “Not only did she map out my courses for me, she encouraged
me to stay,” Zhang said.
“As faculty, you hope to play a role in your students’ season of
self-discovery and in their professional growth. You don’t want to parent
them, but you want them to grow and progress,” Davidson said. “As busy
as we are we are there for our students.”
Zhang emerged from the undergraduate program as an articulate and
empowered adult. Completing graduate school at Chaminade, she now
works at the Attorney General’s office as a research assistant through the
Hawaii State Judiciary and for TJ Mahoney and Associates at Mahoney
Hale as a caseworker for incarcerated inmates transitioning back into
society. She hopes to enter law school soon.
Davidson continues to marvel at the process of self-discovery for
students who at first come in with questions that shift from where they
can work to where can they make a difference. “It is very rewarding to
know that you are a part of that shift,” she concluded.
Making It Count
Chelsea Taketa, 2011 alumna with a BS in Accounting, glanced up
smiling and shared some good news with Wayne Tanna, her former
accounting professor. KMH LLP, a CPA firm, had offered her a position
with its tax division. She had worked there diligently as an intern over
the summer. He, too, was elated.
Taketa had been Tanna’s accounting student and volunteered at tax
clinics for the disadvantaged as part of his Tax Concepts class. During her
junior year as a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) tax preparer,
she volunteered for seven clinics and prepared at least 22 tax returns for
clients from shelters like Maili Land in Waianae. Taketa was especially
moved by her youngest client, a 19-year old woman, who worked at two
jobs to support her three younger siblings and was in the process of
attaining their guardianship. “Assisting her has strengthened my beliefs in
the goodness of people and the importance of helping others,” she
wrote in her reflection.
The reflection moved Tanna and reminded him of why he teaches. “I am
here because of the students. My inspiration comes from this opportunity
to influence the future,” Tanna said. “Students like Chelsea have taught
me and opened my eyes along the way. Students continue to demonstrate
the goodness of people.”
Often accused of “still trying to save the world,” Tanna believes that
“teaching should be a calling.” He has taught at Chaminade for nearly
20 years, started as a lecturer in fall 1992 and became an assistant
professor of accounting in spring of 1993. Tanna, who also taught for
Kapiolani Community College (KCC) in the mid 80s, said “teaching was
always in the cards” for him. When Chaminade hired him, it gave him an
opportunity to engage in his two vocational passions: accounting law
and teaching.
Born in Chicago, raised in Kaimuki, Tanna graduated from Kaimuki High
School in ’73, went to University of Hawaii – West Oahu for his BA and
attained his JD from Lewis and Clark College in Oregon and LLM from
McGeorge Law School - University of the Pacific. For a number of years,
he worked in private practice. “Financially rewarding but empty in a way,”
said Tanna. “There is only so much fulfillment that you can get from
handling leasehold contracts.”
During the 1990s at Chaminade, he realized that his students needed
internships and work experience to enter the accounting profession
and that volunteering to do taxes could be excellent training for them.
Trained and tested by the IRS, his student volunteers would have
professional experience on par with any internship. Additionally, work
would serve the disadvantaged and provide an invaluable practicum.
Taketa said Tanna set the bar very high. “Business as a whole gets a bad
rap, but Professor Tanna with everything he does for students and the
community demonstrates what business can do, using your knowledge in
accounting,” she said. “I may not be able to do the same things he does,
but I can try to make as much of a difference using what I know.”
In five years, Taketa, 22, sees herself with her CPA certification, a
Masters from Chaminade, and working in the community perhaps with
VITA using her skill sets to serve. A Waiakea High School alumna from
Hilo, Taketa came to Chaminade because of a “gut feeling” that she was
supposed to be here. On her Chaminade experience, she reflected, “I went
from being a 17 year old homesick child to someone who is ready to hit
the ground running in the professional world, someone who can rely on
herself and believes in what she is capable of. I grew up at Chaminade.”
Tanna thought about his student’s transformation. “That’s why I teach,”
he said.
