Welcome to Baumholder.
Family and MWR Baumholder
wants to make friends with
you through this publication to give you valuable resources.
Moving to a new location can
be discombobulating, so we
want to give you the ability
to find us and all the wonderful programming here on the
Rock. If you need anything,
you may find us quickly by
searching social media; type in
Baumholder FMWR to find us.
The Rock
You may hear locals refer to
your new home of Baumholder
as the “Home of Champions”
or “The Rock.” These are
terms to describe our 31,000
acres of varied terrain to the
north and northeast of the
actual city of Baumholder (one
of the largest military training
areas in Germany). Baumholder is located just 30 miles
from the French/Luxemburg
border offering locals options
for quick day trips from “the
Rock.” Another convenience
is that the military community
of Baumholder (which encompasses Wetzel, Upper Wetzel
and Smith Barracks) and the
German city of Baumholder
are all are walking distance
from Garrison Headquarters.
It is like being centered on a
university campus. To learn
more about what is happening
in Baumholder, check the following resources for happenings on post.
The Kaiserslautern American is
your community newspaper,
published weekly with MWR
community roundups listed in
the paper.

Family and MWR contributes to the Army’s strength and readiness by offering services that reduce stress, build skills and self-confidence and foster strong esprit de corps. FMWR services also help the Army
attract and retain talented people. Professionals don’t see work as just a job to be done or merely a source of money. They see work as service to others. They labor toward the betterment of other people, directly
or indirectly: customers, employers, and coworkers.

you are driving your vehicle
in order to protect your
rights. Legislation in Germany
offers many advantages for
motorists.
Any motorist in Germany
whose car has been damaged
by another road user is free
as a matter of principle to
appoint an expert of his choice
to assess the damage to his
vehicle.
Preserving all the evidence
of the extent of damage and
the size of a claim in this way
ensures that the injured party
receives the full amount of
damages owing to him. As a
rule, if selling a repaired car
that has been involved in an
accident, there is a duty to
disclose this fact. A damage
report, which is free of charge
to the injured party, can be
used to give a prospective
purchaser information about
the exact extent of damage.
The market value of a vehicle
is reduced in the event of a
traffic accident and ensuing
repairs. This decrease in value
is not normally quantified until
a report is completed. The
owner of the damaged vehicle
is paid for this decrease in
value by the insurer of the
other party. The insurer of
the person who caused the
damage must be provided
with proof of these costs in a
report.
The injured party is free to
have the repair costs refunded
by the other party on the basis
of a damage report submitted
by him (notional invoice) or to
arrange for the repairs to be
carried out, in which case the
garage claims the repair costs
directly from the insurer of
the other party and the injured
party does not have to pay in
advance. You have the right
here to have the vehicle fixed
at a garage of your choice.
If you need a hire car, you are
allowed a replacement vehicle
free of charge. Should you
not require a hire car, you
can apply for compensation
for loss of use; this is also
quantified in a report.
Always be skeptical if the
other party’s liability insurance
offers to handle the entire
claim for you. With this type
of claims control, there is a
high risk that the claim will not
be adjusted in your interest
but as the insurer sees fit.
Your independent advisers
(lawyers and vehicle experts)
are often excluded by this
so-called claims management,
to your ultimate disadvantage.
The injured party can also
appoint a trusted lawyer to
enforce claims. The costs
thus incurred must likewise
be borne by the insurer
of the person who caused
the accident. Exercise your
statutory rights in your own
interests and in the interests
of your wallet. Be sure to seek
a full settlement of your claim
rather than a rapid one.
Independent claims handlers
are available to give you
personal advice on all technical
matters free of charge.

OUTSIDE THE GATE
Photo of Thalichtenberg Castle (left) by Alice Verberne and center & right) Chris Laurion.
290 million years of history, medieval markets, museums & fine dining
Thalichtenberg Castle
by Sarah Redicker
Burg Lichtenberg is a castle
surrounded by the beautiful
landscape in the Pfaelzer mountain
area. Because of its location on
top of a mountain, the first thing
you will notice is the beautiful
view. Just as good as the view is
the restaurant, the convenience
of a youth hostel, an interesting
church and no less than three
museums.
Burg Lichtenberg loosely translates to light filled mountain. The
castle was dubbed this because
the area was cleared of trees
which allowed more light to fall
onto the mountain on which it
was built.
Lichtenberg Castle was built
around 1200 AD by the Earls von
Veldenz. But there was a hitch: the
problem was that the earls did
not get permission to build a castle from the folks who controlled
the area. So, there ensued a fight
between the Bishops of Reims
(who technically controlled the
area) and the Earls of Veldenz who
20
were supposed to protect the
area but not take it over.
One of the first documents
mentioning the castle is from the
bishops asking the earls to tear
down the construction. Lucky for
us, the earls ignored the bishop.
Even though we have evidence
that folks were interested in
fighting over the property, Burg
Lichtenberg was not a terribly important castle and few folks lived
in it. Even the owners (the Veldenz
family) preferred to live in their
comfortable city castle, and used
the Burg Lichtenberg only for
hunting parties or special events
to entertain guests.
In a way, we are lucky that nobody
really cared about the property
because what makes Lichtenberg
Castle so valuable and beautiful
today, is that it was never fought
over or destroyed in wars. The
only damages were caused by a
fire in 1799. Today the rebuilt area
of the castle is one of the largest
preserved castles in Germany
with a length of about 1395 feet.
It is free to enter, but those interested in history of the area may book
a tour in English in advance or join
one of the regularly scheduled ones
every Sunday and holiday at 3 p.m.
(in German). The tour costs 26
Euro per group to tour the castle,
46 Euro plus entry fee for one
museum or 62 Euro for a combined ticket for both museums.
Every first Saturday of the month
is reserved for civil and religious
wedding ceremonies. Book early,
since this is a popular venue by
contacting the Standesamt in Kusel
under the number 06381-9180 for
civil ceremonies and for a religious
ceremony (in the old castle church), contact 06381-1513.
The castle is an excellent venue
for other entertainment options
by renting the castle restaurant.
The restaurant, located within
the castle walls, has space for 140
people with two separate rooms.
To book, contact the restaurant at 06381-2633. It is closed
Mondays. If you need more space
for your guests it is possible rent
the Zehntscheune (where the
Naturkunde and Musikantenland
museums are located).
Want to learn more about the
area? Visit the three museums.
The first and smallest is the
Naturkunde Museum where you
can learn about the local flora
and fauna. If you walk further
up the stairs you will find the
Musikantenland-Museum. Here
you can find out about the famous
musicians this area generated and
then streamed out all over the
world in the time between 1850
and WWI. Many of these musicians also immigrated to America.
One of the most important
musicians from this time was
Georg Drumm. His most famous
composition is “Hail America”
from the year 1917. Since 1950
this composition is played at the
inaugurations of new American
presidents, so this year when we
get a new president, listen closely.
The third Museum is the Geoskop.
It mainly explains what this area
looked like around 290 million years ago, back in the Rotliegen age.
RHEINLANDER
Why did they put a geological
museum on the castle compound?
Because Burg Lichtenberg is
located right in the middle of
the biggest Rotliegen area in
Europe, therefore, this museum
is centered in the middle of the
area where all its exhibitions were
found.
One of the more interesting facets
of the museum is that it compares
ancient plants with their modernday “children” by showing which
plants and animals still exist today
that existed 290 million years ago.
A great example is the Axolotl
(a strange looking water animal
resembling a newt still found in
Mexico today). The name Axolotl
is an Aztec combination of the
word ‚atl‘ (water) and ‚Xolotl‘,
deity. So, loosely translated, axolotl
means „water monster“.
The Axolotl is about as long as
a Barbie doll and lives in water
holes in semi arid regions of
Mexico (so watch where you
step). Don’t worry about stepping
on a live one at the Geoskop,
you will find them in an aquarium
next to the fossilized skeleton of
one of their ancestors from 290
years ago. The “grandpa” version
is little bit bigger than ones still in
existance today. Also they show
you examples of existing plants
alongside fossilized version of
the same plants from the past.
Another highlight of the museum
is the ten foot long sweet water
shark fossil. The sharks look a
bit strange, although classified as
sharks they resemble crocodiles.
The animals used to swim just
outside the castle in an area that
was about 62 miles long and 25
miles wide. The biggest one in
the museum is called the white
shark because the skeleton is
white.

you go that has enough space

are ready to have a good time?
You guessed it—The Rheinlander Community Club.
Sure, this location is ideal

“People come in and want
to rent a room for birthday

a popular place because it’s
the largest building in Baumholder” says Bill Gromowski,
manager of the facility.

Family Child Care (FCC)
Our Family Child Care (FCC)
program is recognized as
one of the best in U.S. Army
Europe. FCC provides children
with engaging, age-appropriate
experiences within a warm
home setting. Our FCC homes
have the benefit of a small
group ratio for multi-age
children from 4 weeks to 12
years, allowing for siblings to
be in care together and for
greater opportunities for more
individualized attention. Devel-
opmental learning experiences
in FCC homes occur through
natural and planned daily
activities. Providers use daily
routines, an enriching curriculum, and teachable moments
to meet the varied needs
and interests of children and
promote positive outcomes.
Similar to our facility-based
programs, the goal of FCC is
to nurture the development of
the “whole” child by providing
a variety of materials, experiences, and activities that are
real and meaningful.
“After enjoying 6 weeks
of maternity leave with
my daughter, I was nervous going back to work
and sending her to child
care. We found a wonderful provider, and she
eased my mind from the
start. Utilizing FCC was
the best decision we
could have made. The
warm and comforting
environment, the small
care setting and the oneon-one time used with
the children is amazing.
My daughter is active,
healthy, and happy for
an 11-month old. Her
motor skills far surpass
those of her own age that
don’t attend child care or
are in a larger child care
environment. FCC was
the best choice for our
family and I applaud the
providers that take the
time to teach the children and bring them into
their homes for the ‘close
knit’ environment. I am a
very pleased and proud
mother of a child that
goes to FCC.”
Are you looking to start your
own business from home? The
Baumholder Family Child Care
(FCC) program is looking for
the best qualified applicants to

Children are our future
and being a provider allows me the opportunity
to help them to succeed.”

HIRED! Apprenticeship Program
Hired is a workforce-preparation and apprenticeship
enterprise designed to meet
the employment and careerexploration needs of Army
teens 15-18 years of age.
HIRED! Apprenticeships offer
experiences within distinct
career paths designed to
help participants determine
whether their chosen career
paths are the correct career
choices for their future.
Students graduating from high
school are facing profound
social, technological and economic changes. The goal of the
HIRED. Apprenticeship Program is to help teens develop
the necessary confidence and
employer-valued abilities to
succeed in today’s competitive
job market. Child, Youth and
School Services and Family and
Morale, Welfare and Recreation (FMWR) have joined
together to prepare teens for
these rapidly changing conditions.
HIRED. Apprenticeship Terms consist of four twelve-week terms
repeated annually. Opportunities to work after school and
weekends exist year round in
programs such as food service,
child care, outdoor recreation,
libraries, fitness centers, golf,
and more. Teens may participate in up to two apprentice
terms per year and will receive
a stipend upon completion of
each term. Participants must
commit to 15 hours of participation within a seven (7)-day
period for a total of 180 hours
per term.
To learn more about HIRED. programs or to apply
for enrollment, contact the Wetzel Teen Center,
