xcitement filled the air at
a pair of venues as staff
from Sovereign General Insurance once again
participated in an annual
fundraising program to
help raise money for the Children’s Wish
Foundation, a national organization
which fulfills the wishes of children diagnosed with life-threatening illnesses.
Sovereign General, a platinum sponsor
of the Foundation, donates $200,000 to
the organization every year. In recent
years its employees have participated in
CWF’s annual Exile Island competition
held in select cities across the country.
Based on the TV show “Survivor”, Exile Island participants form tribes made
up of 10 people. Their goal is to grant a
specific wish for a local child and raise a
minimum of $10,000, the average cost of
a wish. Two Exile Island events attended by
Sovereign General competitors have
already been held – one in Toronto, the
second in Edmonton. A third is planned
for Calgary in October.
The Toronto competition took place
May 29. The insurer’s tribe, the Sovengers, netted just over $15,000 to grant
12-year-old Owen his wish, still undecided. In spite of his illness – he has
been diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic
leukemia – Owen remains very active.
He likes to skateboard and cheer for the
Toronto Raptors. His favourite movie
star is Adam Sandler.
The Sovengers were honoured to be
presented with the Most Valuable Tribe
award, which is given to the tribe best

make the day and the event a success.
The Exile Island event in Edmonton
was held January 30. The Edmonton
tribe, which raised $18,000, was named
Matthew’s Walkers in honour of 13-yearold Matthew, who also suffers from
acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Matthew’s
wish is to meet the cast of “The Walking
Dead”, a TV series based on a comic book
series about life after a zombie apocalypse. Matthew’s favourite character of
the series is Michonne.
The tribe was exiled at West Edmonton Mall and faced mental and physical
challenges that included walking the
plank, loading cannons and a T-shirt
word scramble. Among the physical
challenges was eating a two-litre carton
of ice cream with one hand. Matthew’s
Walkers completed this task in one
minute and 45 seconds.
The Calgary event will be held at
McMahon Stadium in October. Sovereign
will be represented by two tribes. The
company is hosting a fundraiser at the
city’s Schanks Sports Grill Sept. 25. To
