Foam
Ecoflex foam is patented and made exclusively for Natuzzi. Our foam is created and
customized to support sitting weight distribution and ensures individual comfort on each

Plush Polyester
Extremely soft and resilient, plush polyester

Feather
Sterilized feathers are used in place of polyester fiber in certain models and are encased

Natuzzi Group Glossary - Leather Terminology
Aniline: A process to turn raw hides into leather by
submerging in a drum. Aniline dye has no color and is
an agent which allows dyes, fats and oils to completely
penetrate. An aniline dyed leather will have no color
adjustment and all natural markings will be visible.
Natuzzi Natural: Natuzzi family of leathers which are
soft and velvety to the touch. They retain original
characteristics and are ideal for people who love to
surround themselves with authentic, natural materials.
Bi-Cast: A split leather engineered with a layer of
polyurethane giving a uniformly consistent color and
providing strength and durability.
Buffed or Polished: Leather that has been smoothed
or sueded by mechanical sanding. The effect is a
more consistent look. Nubuk is an example.
Corrected: Leather that has been sanded and
embossed; an artificial grain.
Crust: Leather that has been tanned but not finished.
Embossed: Leather that has been further processed
by “correcting” the natural grain using plates or rollers
to create uniform pattern or unique effect (crocodile,
lizard, etc.). After splitting to the required thickness,
the natural grain is buffed or sanded and replaced
with an embossed grain which is pressed into the
surface to simulate various patterns. The result is a
very consistent look. While still represented as a top
grain leather, this is not considered a natural grain.
Enhanced grain or Drawn grain: Shrunken,
shriveled or wrinkled grain surface of leather.
“Pebbled” appearance.
Wet Blue
Finishing: Any further steps taken after the first drum
aniline dyeing process such as rolling, embossing,
color spraying, waxing, buffing, glazing, applying
polyurethane, or waterproofing to provide more
stain resistance and/or a more consistent look and
resistance to fading. Generally the more finishing done
to a leather the stiffer it becomes. Aniline leather tend
to be softer than finished leathers and remain more
natural in look and feel.
Natuzzi Protecta: finished leathers that are protected
against soil, liquid, and abrasion. Natuzzi family of
leathers which are resistant to stains and wear. These
leathers are ideal for dynamic and active households
which includes kids and pets.
Full-aniline, Naked or Pure-aniline: After the hide
is dyed and turned into leather it is left as natural as
possible. It receives no topical applications – all natural
markings and color variation will be visible.
Matte: A flat or dull finish.
Milling: The process of softening leather by tumbling
in a drum.
Mottling or Sauvage: A light controlled shading
accomplished by adding a second color. This
treatment adds depth and character. It may be created
naturally through aniline tumbling, or applied topically
to a finished leather.
Natural grain: A leather that retains the full original,
unaltered grain. Natural variations acceptable on hides
can include wrinkles, scars, scratches, stretch marks,
and color variance; all hallmarks of the authentic
natural origin of the raw material.
Nubuk: Top-grain aniline leather that has been buffed
to create a sueding effect. Care must be taken against
soiling or staining as no protective layer is added.
Full-grain or Full top-grain: Premium leathers that
have been aniline-dyed but otherwise unaltered.
Natural markings remain to hallmark the unique
appeal of leather.
Patina: A luster that develops on pure anilines and
nubuks over time.
Grain: Natural or embossed pattern and texture
of a leather’s surface.
Pull-up: Full grain aniline leather which shows a burst
of lighter color when it is pulled tightly or stretched.
The beautiful ‘action’ is a result of displaced fats,
oils and waxes that allow the color to move. Simply
massage back using heat and pressure. Often all you
need to use is the heat a pressure of your hand.
Hand or Drag: Term used to describe the softness
or feel of the leather.
Leather: A generic term used for all kinds of tanned
hides and skins.
Leather match: Leather match combines top-grain
leather with matched vinyl. Not 100% leather.
Natural Leathers
Protecta
Pigment: Color.
Split: Also known as suede, this is the second layer
of the hide that has been split from the top grain, then
embossed with a grain pattern and topically finished
with color. Split hides are less flexible than top grain
and strategically used on upholstery in areas that will
not be under any stress; such as the backs or sides
of the sofa.
Suede: The underneath portion of the hide after the
splitting process. A very delicate material that should
only be used on accents such as pillows, ottomans,
and select occasional chairs. Predominantly used in
the garment industry.
Tanning: The process of converting raw hides into
a non-perishable state, leather.
Top Coat: Synthetic, transparent polyurethane applied
as a clear protective coating that makes leather more
resistant to wear and liquids. May be gloss or matte
depending on the style and type of leather.
Top grain: When a hide is split to the desired thickness,
the top most surface layer is referred to as top grain.
Top grain is the most durable and flexible part of a hide
due to the strength of the fibers.
Wet blue: The light blue color that a hide turns as
a result of the tanning process.
Reconstituted, Bonded or Fiber leather: Much the
same process as particle board. Where remnants,
shavings and scraps are ground up and repurposed.
The leather particles are then bonded with adhesive
into a fabric, followed by the application of an
embossed grain and finished with color.
