Supercalender Process and
Condition Test
A well-functioning supercalender is necessary for good paper quality and
excellent runnability. e supercalender process and condition test analyzes the
condition of the supercalender in terms of end product quality, machine
runnability and maintenance.
Benefits
Ÿ Minimizes waste
Ÿ Improves runnability
Ÿ Improves roll quality
Ÿ Improves profile
Ÿ Improves daily maintenance and
operation
Objective
Grounds for service
e objective of the supercalender process and
condition test is to de ne the current condition of the
supercalender and to determine the service operations
needed for the next scheduled shutdown or the scope
of the reconditioning needs. e test also provides the
mill maintenance department with useful information
for their daily maintenance actions.
A defective supercalender can cause considerable
economic loss due to broke, web breaks, poor pro les
and unplanned shutdowns. Adjustments/servicing will
be done during the test where possible within the time
and with the crew speci ed in the contract. Mill
personnel cooperation will be required in this respect.
Recommended service
Supercalenders operate under high mechanical and
chemical stress. erefore they should be tested at
least once a year to ensure trouble-free and reliable
operation. It is recommended that a supercalender
process and condition test be conducted every year.
Scope of service
e analyses made by service professionals will inform
the mill of all necessary adjustment and maintenance
needs.
An oral report on the major de ciencies observed
and the recommended solutions will be given at the
end of the test.
e supercalender test provides information on:
Ÿ Supercalender functions
Ÿ Nip loading
Ÿ Supercalendering parameters
Ÿ Paper roll structure
e test includes:
Ÿ Loading pressure measurements
Ÿ Mechanical condition inspections
Ÿ ermal measurements
Ÿ DC-roll pressure measurements
Ÿ Spindle operation checks
Ÿ Reel hardness measurements
Ÿ CD pro le analyses
Downtime needed
© Valmet Corporation, SER41028 V5 EN 10/2014
A total shutdown of 6 to 8 hours per supercalender
will be required. Shutdowns can be split into 2-hour
sessions/supercalender, which will allow normal
production to continue during the testing period.
