Sample Lesson - MEGA Sports Camp
1 PREPARE KIDS WILL … Kids will discover that they need to be prepared for the game ahead. MEGA POINT Get ready . . . the game is coming. SESSION FOCUS No one is an overnight success. Anyone who seems to be an overnight success has actually spent time in preparation. Help the kids at your sports camp discover that living life purposefully today is preparation for success tomorrow. Kids who want to be strong and healthy adults need to prepare today by eating healthy foods, exercising often, and avoiding health-damaging habits like smoking or drinking. Kids who want good relationships later need to prepare now by being kind and a good friend. In the spiritual realm, the same is true. If a child prepares now by loving and serving God each day, he or she will be ready to obey God as a teen and adult. What you do today matters for tomorrow. Help kids discover this. BIBLE STORY David 1 Samuel 17 SPORTS STORY Jeremy Lin MEGA VERSE MEGA Verse: Each day, our Featured Athlete will introduce 1 Peter 3:15 a new segment of the MEGA Verse with actions. Encourage kids to learn each segment of the MEGA Verse until the complete verse is learned. “But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.” 1 Peter 3:15 22 RALLY GUIDE | DAY 1 © 2015 by My Healthy Church, 1445 N. Boonville Ave., Springfield, MO 65802. DAY 1 | RALLY GUIDE 23 GET READY SAY On the count of three, I want you to yell the sport that you’re going to be learning more about at MEGA Sports Camp. Ready? One, two, three, go! (Group response) In between Sports Sessions, we’ll meet together for rallies. These rallies will be fun times to discover how sports can teach us about God. He has a plan for all of us. We need to be prepared for that plan. Do you want to be prepared? (Group response) I want to introduce you to a special athlete who will help us understand how we can be prepared for the game ahead. Give it up for our Featured Athlete, Jon! FEATURED ATHLETE TEACHES THE MEGA POINT e Featured Athlete introduces today’s theme and MEGA Point. COACH’S CORNER If you are not using the Featured Athlete Segment from the DVD, review the points you’ll need to share with the kids. Play the Day 1 Opening Rally Featured Athlete Segment on the Music & Media DVD. The Prepare Poster appears at the end of the video. Show kids the Prepare Poster. SAY I like what Jon said. “Game day is just a test of how well you have prepared.” During MEGA Sports Camp, we’re going to prepare to be better athletes and better people too. So when you are tired of practicing your sport, remember that you’re getting ready—because your game is coming. MEGA VISITS MEGA enters from the back and runs to the stage causing quite a distraction. (He might climb over a row of kids, trip in the aisle, etc. When he finally gets to the stage, he should pause, catch his breath, then raise his hands triumphantly.) If you had MEGA at a previous camp, see the sidebar for an alternate introduction. SAY Kids, this is MEGA. He’s our MEGA Sports Camp mascot. Let’s give him a hand. (Lead kids in applauding for MEGA.) When MEGA shows up, he loves to hear the MEGA Point. MEGA nods yes and does the MEGA Point action. SAY Oh, you’re doing that action to tell us to say the MEGA Point, right? (MEGA nods yes.) Let’s show MEGA that we already know today’s MEGA Point. Are you ready? (Group response) COACH’S CORNER Say: MEGA! I’m so glad you’re back! (MEGA waves to different kids in the audience as speaker continues.) How many of you remember MEGA from last time? (Group response) If there are kids present from an earlier camp, ask one to come up, give MEGA a high five or a hug, and explain to everyone who MEGA is and what he does. Get ready . . . the game is coming. 24 RALLY GUIDE | DAY 1 © 2015 by My Healthy Church, 1445 N. Boonville Ave., Springfield, MO 65802. Permission to duplicate for individual camp use. GET READY SAY That was awesome! Wasn’t that awesome, MEGA? (MEGA gives kids a thumbs-up.) MEGA loves the MEGA Point. So whenever he shows up and does this (MEGA does the MEGA Point action), he wants to hear the MEGA Point. Let’s try it right now. MEGA does the MEGA Point action. Get ready . . . the game is coming. MEGA should respond with excitement when the kids are done. SAY MEGA Point Action MEGA, are you going to hang out with us today? MEGA nods yes. SAY Great! MEGA, you and the kids will get to hear a sports story about a basketball player who prepared for a very long time before he became a huge success. He lived our MEGA Point. He got ready because he knew his game was coming. And you’ll hear about a boy in the Bible who spent years preparing for his big moment, his game, his chance to become a hero for his entire nation. He also lived our MEGA Point. Let’s say it together one more time. MEGA does the MEGA Point action. Get ready . . . the game is coming. SAY So, be ready to say the MEGA Point at any time you see MEGA. You just never know when he’ll show up and want you to say the MEGA Point. MEGA should respond with excitement. AWARDS SAY Now, let’s talk about one of the best parts of MEGA Sports Camp—awards! Who likes to win prizes? (Group response) Choose one or all of the following ideas (or add your own) to describe how to win awards at your camp. Sports Flash SAY Every day, you’ll get a Sports Flash (hold up Sports Flash 1) filled with fun activities. Show the Get Ready Theme Keeper. Magnetic Photo Frame SAY At MEGA Sports Camp, we’ll be learning a MEGA Verse from the Bible. We’ll learn just a small part of the verse each day. When you can say the whole MEGA Verse on your own to one of the coaches, you’ll get a prize. Show the Get Ready Magnetic Photo Frame. CONCLUSION SAY Who’s ready to play sports? (Group response) Let’s meet the coaches. Call the coaches to the front, grouped by sport. Introduce each coach. SAY Before we head out to our first Sports Session, let’s warm up and stretch. Everyone, stand up and get ready. (Choose from the stretches listed.) Ask a Head Coach to lead the kids in stretching exercises to prepare them for Sports Session 1. Permission to duplicate for individual camp use. Kids hear a sports story that reinforces today’s theme. YOU WILL NEED GETTING READY Stepladder with at least five steps SAY Place the stepladder at the front of the Rally Zone. Everyone loves a good sports story—especially when someone comes from behind and does something amazing. GET READY SPORTS STORY Today’s sports story is about an athlete who came from behind and did something pretty amazing. But it’s also about how he got ready to be amazing. How many of you like to play basketball? Raise your hand. Let kids raise one hand. MEGA responds enthusiastically. Click to show Sports Flash 1. SAY How many of you would like to play in the NBA? Raise both your hands. Let kids raise both hands. MEGA responds enthusiastically. Have kids put their hands down. SAY Well, Jeremy Lin was just like you when he was a kid. He wanted to play in the NBA. But Jeremy had a nickname. It was “Little Jeremy,” because he was just that—little. Is it easy to get to play in the NBA if you’re little? (no) Point to the ladder. SAY MEGA, I’ve got a ladder here. Can you climb it and show us how tall Jeremy probably wanted to be so he could play in the NBA? MEGA climbs the ladder. SAY That’s pretty tall, MEGA! It must have seemed really tall to a short kid like Jeremy. But being little didn’t stop Jeremy from preparing for the basketball future he wanted. SAY Come on down, MEGA, so you can help us. MEGA climbs down the ladder. SAY Everyone, I need your help too. I’ll ask you questions about Jeremy’s preparation for the NBA and your answers will tell MEGA if he should climb up or down the ladder. © 2015 by My Healthy Church, 1445 N. Boonville Ave., Springfield, MO 65802. Permission to duplicate for individual camp use. DAY 1 | RALLY GUIDE 31 GET READY SAY Jeremy prepared by believing in himself when no one else did. Remember, he believed he could play in the NBA even though he was small. Is believing in yourself a good way to prepare? Point up if it’s a good thing. Point down if it’s a bad way to prepare. Pause for kids to point up. SAY Yes, we need to believe in ourselves—even when no one else does. MEGA, climb up one step. MEGA climbs one step up the ladder. SAY Jeremy worked really hard at basketball every day. Even though he didn’t know when his game was coming, he was up every day at six a.m. He went to the gym and shot hundreds of baskets with just the right arc. He worked on his footwork and his ball handling too. Are these good ways to prepare to be a great basketball player? Pause for kids to point up. SAY Practicing is a great way to prepare. That’s why we’re here at MEGA Sports Camp. MEGA, climb up another step. MEGA climbs a second step up the ladder. SAY But in spite of being a great high school player, Jeremy didn’t get any scholarships to play college ball. And after he graduated from college, not one NBA team drafted him. Then when Jeremy tried out for the NBA, two teams cut him. Do you think Jeremy wanted to give up? (Allow responses.) Is giving up a good way to prepare? Pause for kids to point down. SAY No, giving up is never a good way to prepare. Oh, no. MEGA, come down a step. MEGA steps down one rung on the ladder. SAY It’s never easy when we aren’t picked for a team. But Jeremy didn’t give up. He kept preparing. Finally, Jeremy was picked up by the New York Knicks. But even then, he sat on the bench—over and over again, game after game. SAY But Jeremy kept giving his best effort to the team—in practice and even when he sat on the bench during games. 32 RALLY GUIDE | DAY 1 © 2015 by My Healthy Church, 1445 N. Boonville Ave., Springfield, MO 65802. Permission to duplicate for individual camp use. GET READY SAY In an interview with ESPN, Jeremy said, “You don’t have to wait for the coach to put you in! You’re already in the lineup. The question is whether you will give it your all. How hard are you willing to practice?” Do you think Jeremy was ready for his game to come? Pause for kids to point up. SAY I think he was. MEGA, go up another step. MEGA goes up one rung on the ladder. SAY Finally, Jeremy got his chance to play! In his first few games with the Knicks, he scored so many points he broke records set by great basketball players like Dwyane Wade and LeBron James. Soon he had so many fans around the world that sportswriters called it “Linsanity.” Should MEGA go up another step? Pause for kids to point up. SAY I agree. Jeremy was impressive. MEGA, climb the ladder. MEGA goes up one rung on the ladder. SAY Jeremy was prepared, but he kept his heart and mind in the right place. As Jeremy said, “My audience is God.” MEGA, you can climb all the way to the top for that. MEGA goes to the top of the ladder. SAY Jeremy Lin prepared to be an NBA star, but more importantly, he prepared for the most important audience of all—God. If you feel like you’re still sitting on the bench, be like Jeremy and keep preparing. Your game is coming. CONCLUSION SAY Now, who’s ready to play some more sports? (Group response) MEGA waves excitedly from the top of the ladder. SAY Awesome! Follow your coach to your sport. Have fun! You will need to hold them as you climb the ladder. Stepladder Place the stepladder at the front of the Rally Zone. Our Bible hero is a lot like our sports hero, Jeremy Lin. Both of them got ready a long time before their game arrived. Our Bible hero’s name is David. He faced an enemy who was tall—I mean really tall. His enemy was a giant named Goliath who was nine feet tall. Climb to the top of the ladder to demonstrate how high nine feet tall is. 36 RALLY GUIDE | DAY 1 COACH’S CORNER Nervous about climbing a ladder? Have a Huddle Coach climb the ladder during the Bible story. © 2015 by My Healthy Church, 1445 N. Boonville Ave., Springfield, MO 65802. Permission to duplicate for individual camp use. GET READY SAY The whole army on David’s side of the fight was afraid of Goliath. Not one of them would fight Goliath. But David wasn’t afraid. He was ready for his game. David killed Goliath the giant with just one stone from his slingshot. Right then, David became a national hero. Click to show the Bible Story art. SAY So, have you ever wanted to be a hero? (Allow responses.) Let’s find out how David prepared to become a giant-killing hero. Let’s start at the beginning, at the bottom. Climb down from the ladder. SAY David’s climb to hero status began out in the fields. He was a shepherd who took care of his father’s sheep. Lean over to your neighbor and tell them one thing you might like about living outside all the time. Or tell them if you wouldn’t like it at all. Give kids time to respond. SAY David was a lot like many of you. He was the youngest in his family. Raise your hand if you’re the youngest. Encourage kids to raise their hands. David had seven older brothers. Can you imagine what it was like with seven older brothers? He probably got picked on a lot. Closing Rally • Bible Story Sign 1 MEGA Sports Camp Get Ready—Day 1 SAY Being the youngest didn’t stop David though. Let’s find out why. Print a copy. Climb one step of the ladder. Hold up the “Believe in Yourself” sign. SAY Just like Jeremy Lin, David prepared by believing in himself when no one else seemed to. Even his father sometimes overlooked David. Once a very important man came to visit. He told David’s father to call all of his sons to a special meal. But David’s father left David out in the field. David was overlooked. SAY It’s not easy to believe in yourself when you’re overlooked or left out. But David knew his game was coming. He trusted Someone to take care of him until it was time for his game. He spent time listening to and talking to God. So David knew that he could trust God—even when others overlooked him. Climb a third step of the ladder. Hold up the “Work Hard” sign. © 2015 by My Healthy Church. All rights reserved. Permission to duplicate for purchaser or church and/or educational use only. Not intended for commercial redistribution. SAY David prepared by working hard. He was a good shepherd who protected his sheep. Just like Jeremy Lin practiced shooting baskets, David must have practiced using his slingshot. Over and over and over again, he threw rocks until he could hit exactly what he aimed for. SAY David got so good at protecting his sheep that he killed both a bear and a lion when they tried to attack his sheep. David prepared by believing in himself, trusting God, and working hard. He was getting ready for his test, his game day. Climb a fourth step of the ladder. Hold up the “Seize the Opportunity” sign. SAY Then David’s brothers went off to fight in the army. Where was David? (Allow responses.) Yes, he stayed with the sheep. But after a few weeks, David’s father sent him to see his brothers in the army. David found his brothers lined up with all the other soldiers ready to fight. That is, they were ready to fight until Goliath came out and yelled, “Who’s going to fight me?” Then everyone turned away. The whole army was afraid of this one big guy. Climb the fifth step of the ladder. Closing Rally • Bible Story Sign 1 MEGA Sports Camp Get Ready—Day 1 David seized the opportunity. He volunteered to fight Goliath. David’s brothers, the other soldiers, and even the king couldn’t believe a young boy was willing to fight this giant, Goliath. Hold up the “Trust God” sign. SAY Print a copy.
