This workshop will kick off with a free lecture and
slide presentation of images that trace 45 years
of pottery making. This in-depth talk encompasses
early inspiration from Warren MacKenzie and
Bernard Leach, the wood firing years in the 1980s,
and the current influence of art deco architecture
discovered in New Zealand in 1991. And yes, there
will be slides (thanks to parents who NEVER throw
anything away made by their children) of pots
made in Ceramics 101 at Bemidji State University
in 1965!
Portraits can be most enjoyable if one knows a few
drawing and painting basics, and is not mentally
set on trying to compete with others in one’s
group. These classes will emphasize individuality.
The instructor will encourage students to compare
their work ONLY with the last, best piece that
they have done themselves. Then students can
continue to improve and develop in their own,
unique fashion. The instructor’s medium is
transparent watercolor. All other watermedia users
are welcome. The emphasis of the class will be on
drawing skills, color selection, and design. There
will be many demonstrations and everyone will be
encouraged to model for short poses. During these
classes, students will be drawing and locating facial
features, choosing color, designing a portrait, and
discovering hints to finding a likeness. Students
should also bring photos to class to work from.

The main focus of the Saturday workshop will
be on the making of forms that relate to the
drinking and serving of tea and other foods. A
majority of these wheel-thrown pieces will be
altered employing a variety of techniques, such
as faceting, cut and join, darting, and ribbing.
Surrounding the work will be discussions on
surface treatment and soda-firing methods as
well as issues relating to what is involved in being
a self-sustaining potter in modern times. Of equal
importance is how to maintain a sense of humor
in the changing 21st century!

This class will focus on underpainting before
beginning to paint with pastel and a wetting
agent such as water or rubbing alcohol. Students
should bring a photo reference to work from. All
subjects are welcome, but the instructor would
suggest staying away from portraits. There will be
two demos, one in the morning, and one in the
afternoon. The morning demo will feature the kind
of underpainting that would normally be used and
the afternoon demo will feature “Drip and Run!”,
a fun deviation from the usual. Bring a lunch.

This workshop will pique students’ interest in
expanding the skills needed to improve their oil
paintings, no matter what style they work in —
inside to outside, thin to thick, dark to light. The
instructor guarantees a knowledge- and fun-filled
two days! Wherever students are in their painting
skills, this class will give them a new way of

Jean Ranstrom is a national award winning artist
in oil and pastel and Ann Tristani’s teacher/mentor.
She co-owned and operated Avalon Arts in White
Bear Lake for 13 years. She is currently the
owner/operator of Jean Ranstrom Studio and
Gallery in Alexandria, MN. She continues to teach
workshops and classes in her gallery and the
surrounding area.

incorporate into art. This workshop will explore
the linen-like texture of burlap by cutting it up
to sculpt trees or abstract shapes. These shapes
will then be applied onto canvas with a medium
and overlaid with plaster and acrylic. Ripped
raw canvas will also be attached to weave on
the substrate and build up geometric forms. This
tactile, raised surface creates a textile look and
adds dimension. Students will work on large
canvas to create bold and beautiful works. Both
applications will inspire endless possibilities
to explore new subject matter.

Skies: fluffy, billowy, stormy, angry, peaceful,
dramatic. Making the sky a focal point of a
painting can pull and envelope the viewer into
the composition. And, even if the sky is not the
focal point of the painting, it should not be a
distraction either. For two days, this workshop
with Calvin deRuyter will focus only on skies in
the watercolor medium. Students will play with
shapes, colors, and flow to make skies fluid and
to give them the importance they deserve in
landscape paintings. Unleash the exploring spirit
and the fun that skies can have! See the range

Unleashed: Skies
Burlap is a great surface to paint on or to

In this 3-day workshop, participants will learn
the process of building abstractions by means
of layering and utilizing cold wax medium, tube
oils, pigment sticks, powdered pigments, and a
variety of implements. Students will explore new
ways to create textures, color fields, and mark
making. Utilizing various tools and techniques
students will “push the limits” of their mediums
and welcome the surprises along the way,
deciding what works and what does not. This
workshop is well suited for those who have had
some prior painting experience and who enjoy
the sharing, flexibility, and happenstance of a
group environment! The workshop focuses on the
process itself, not necessarily a finished painting
– on the possibilities of that process and how it
can be incorporated in individual artistic practice.
Once comfortable with the basic techniques,
the class will start to look at form and content,
deliberate and accidental mark making, starting
points, titling of work, and working in series,
all within the discussion of process/passion/
purpose. Technique demonstrations combined
with student experimentation, group discussions,
and printed resources make this a liberating
experience which will enhance students’
appreciation for the content and meaning
within abstraction.

Throughout this two-hour presentation,
participants will hear tons of information about
a variety of Golden acrylics and the inherent
possibilities of acrylic materials. Extensive
information about acrylic paints, gels, and mediums
is presented, including OPEN and High Flow acrylics.
OPEN is designed to stay wet longer than other
acrylic paints, allowing for more control over drying time, and High Flow is highly pigmented and
ink-like in consistency. Learn about Digital Mixed
Media grounds, materials that push the versatility
of acrylics even further by mixing up printmaking,
photography, and painting. See how acrylic paints
and gels mix together, as well as several examples
of materials in a variety of applications. Learn
to extend paint to save money and how to mix
gels with paints to create gorgeous textures and
surfaces to paint on. See examples of QoR, Golden’s
new watercolor paint, and some luscious colors
of Willamsburg Oils. Open to all levels of painting

Meet a group from WBCA at Foci Minnesota Center
for Glass Arts for an exciting “field trip!” Work with
a professional glass instructor to make a globe
sculpture, heart sculpture, or tumbler. This hands-on
experience is designed to provide participants with
an exciting introduction to working with molten
glass. This is the perfect activity for the curious, the
adventurous, and the romantic. Finished projects
can be picked up from WBCA one week after the
class. Students must register at least 2 weeks
in advance for this class.

Visit the art-filled country of Italy with people from
your community. WBCA is partnering with White
Bear Lake Community Services to offer this trip
through Premier Travel. This very special 9-day trip
features Rome, Tuscany, and 4 nights in Florence.
Start in Rome and Assisi where the Basilica of St.
Francis is located. Next, travel to Lucca and Pisa to
visit the Leaning Tower of Pisa. In Florence, enjoy
a city tour and visit the Academy Gallery, Giotto’s
Belltower and Baptistery, as well as the Piazza Della
Signoria. On the final day, attend the Rome City Tour
and see the Treasures of the Vatican Museum, the
Sistine Chapel, St. Peter’s Basilica, the Coliseum, the

This watercolor class will focus on how to mix
clean, vibrant color. Concepts of color value,
intensity and temperature, color mixing, and application of color will be explored. Move past the
basics of color theory, explore structured color
schemes, and strengthen color knowledge. This
class will introduce students to strategies that will
help them to use color with confidence and create
paintings that have more visual impact.
Using still life as the genre, this watercolor course
will focus on concepts of composition, value and
shape patterns, creating movement in the painting,
color selection, modeling of objects, and painting
shadows. Students will paint from studio set-ups,
which they will create, as they learn how to make
an interesting painting from everyday objects.

Participants in this class will gain an understanding
of how horses and other animals are put
together, giving a solid foundation for constructing
animals in paintings and drawings. Class time
will be spent drawing equine and other animal
skeletons and the major muscle groups. A simple,
easy-to-understand approach to the skeletal and
muscle structures will be covered. No memorizing
required. Some tracing will be used to commit
the details of each object to memory. By
expanding knowledge of muscle definition,
animal renderings will become more faithful
to the natural beauty of all animals. Time will
also be dedicated to discovering the classical
approach of portraying animals by copying the
masters. Water-soluble inks, graphite, and Conte
crayon will be the mediums for this class. All
levels are welcome in this stress-free class.

Introduction
to Watercolor

Finding success in working with watercolor
includes learning the basics. The instructor will
describe in detail the materials used in watercolor
paintings and how the water and pigment work
together on the paper. The class also involves
learning brush techniques, mixing colors, graying
colors or knocking down the intensity, methods
for producing textures, doing value studies, and
discussing what makes a good composition.
Students will use a viewfinder to choose an eyecatching composition that can be painted in
a larger abstract version, illustrating high, medium,
and low key value. Finally, we will find inspiration
in the labyrinth outside where we’ll create
a watercolor mandala. Curious? Join us to
experience, enjoy, and relax while learning.

As a class, students will proceed through all phases
of a landscape painting from the drawing to the
lay-in, glazes, and final highlights. The instructor
will demonstrate each phase in a step-by-step
manner that includes individual help. Class will
begin with a pencil drawing and a burnt umber
lay-in. On the first week of class the instructor will
discuss different brands of paints and different
whites and get a general consensus on the classes’
feelings about some palettes and the pros and cons
of each.

Whether one is just getting started or has painted
for many years, this class has much to offer. Students
will work from their own studies, sketches, drawings,
or photos and will learn what it takes to create a
successful painting from start to finish. Mike will
show examples of his work and give demos, short
lectures, and lots of positive encouragement while
students work on their own projects and style. The
information provided applies to all mediums, so
students may work in oils, acrylics, or pastels. Class
is limited to 10 students. Students cannot miss the
first day of class, as Mike will be giving important
lectures and demos. No supplies are needed the
first day of class, except paper and pen to take notes.

This class is designed to be an ongoing, weekly
studio painting class for working with either
traditional or water miscible oil paints. The
instructor welcomes beginners who have always
wanted to try oils, intermediate students who
wish to build on their skills, and returning
students. Her approach to guiding and
encouraging each of her students individually
builds confidence and enjoyment of the painting
process, and creates a community of painters.
Classes include demonstrations and lots of tips
for everyone. Students will first paint a still life,
then progress by choosing their own subjects,
using photos or set-ups to guide them.
Note: Students choosing to work with water
miscible oils will purchase a complete supply
kit from the instructor on the first day of class.
Students who wish to work in traditional oils

The characteristics of Impressionist painting
include relatively small, thin, yet visible brush
strokes, with emphasis on accurate depiction of
light in its changing qualities (often accentuating
the effects of the passage of time), and ordinary
subject matter. Claude Monet’s “Water Lilies” will
be the inspiration for the first class in March.
“The Red Vineyard” by Vincent van Gogh will be
the inspiration for the April class. The third class
in May will focus on Claude Monet’s “Impression,
Sunrise.” Using acrylic pigments, students will learn
to paint these beautiful works of art, add their
own style, and capture the impressionistic period.

Using the elements and principles of design, students
in this class will create a piece of nonobjective art
that is totally reliant on the elements of art as
subject. Basic foundations will help everyone along
with the process of layering paint on the paper.
Learn a variety of techniques for transferring
images (drawings or photos) onto acrylic
materials and how to work them into paintings
and collages for fun, expressive personal
statements. Step-by- step instructions for
creating gel ‘skins’ will be presented, and students
will make some skins of their own. See what
interesting effects can be achieved when directly
transferring images onto the surface of artwork
using acrylic materials. Work with prepared skins
and create a whimsical portrait filled with texture
and vibrant color by applying multiple layers
of paints and gels. Attention to composition,
balance, and creating the collage image will be
covered, as well as clear explanations about the
acrylic materials provided for the class. All levels
of painting experience are welcome.

Come and paint the day away in a fun, fast,
loose way. Paint with bold, big brushstrokes using
brushes loaded with lots of paint. Using a variety
of familiar everyday objects for subject matter,
students will create little paintings filled with color
and packed with emotion. The focus will be on
capturing larger shapes, not details. Students will
be encouraged to work quickly with as few brush
strokes as possible or swiftly apply paint with a

Kolrosing is an old Scandinavian tradition dating
back to Viking times and was most often used to
decorate objects such as spoons, small bowls or
boxes, cups, etc. A specially designed knife is used
to cut fine lines into wood. Traditionally, coal was
rubbed into these incised lines to enhance the
design, now finely ground coffee is used instead.
On day one of this class, students will become
familiar with the kolrosing knife and working with
and against the grain of the wood. Practice coasters
will be made. Students can then start tracing their
final project on a larger piece of basswood. Day
two will be spent on completing the final project
- a perfect piece to hang from any wall. Students
can bring their own line design or use one of those
provided by the teacher. Designs are not limited to
only traditional patterns. Be creative! All tools and
materials are provided for this class. Please bring
magnification if needed for this close hand work.

Join in on a new endeavor of working with hot
beeswax which contains a resin as a hardening
agent and pigments of many colors. It is called
encaustic, an ancient art form dating back to the
Greeks, which was revived by Jasper Johns and
has gained popularity since the 90s. This medium
is exciting because of its flexibility and versatility.
Wax can be moved with a hot air gun, textured
with tools, imbedded with beautiful paper, and
turned into a collage. Step-by-step instruction
and individual attention will help students develop
their painting in this wonderful medium. Students
with previous instruction may attend any class and

The focus of this workshop is to help students find,
trust, and enrich their own artistic voice through
the wonderful medium of pastels. The class will
look at techniques to learn how value, composition,
style, and color turn into great works of art.
Students should bring whatever pastels they
already have, if any, and a notebook. Cynthia will
supply a variety of papers and a variety of hard
and soft pastels. The instructor will teach how to
create sanded paper and how to under-paint for
pastel paintings. Students should feel free to bring
some of their own photographs, especially those
that have personal meaning. It is best to work from
photos that have strong contrast, both darks and
lights. Hint: usually landscapes start from about
30-40 feet in front of the viewer. $15 material fee

artistic background or believe one needs to have
“inborn talent.” This unique, two-part series will
put those fears to rest, using an acclaimed workbook with drawing exercises that have proven to be
highly effective. Students will learn to access the
right side of the brain, which is where non-verbal
and creative abilities are concentrated. This series
is designed to teach complete novices how to
draw and those who already draw to deepen their

Although a straight line may occasionally be
used, this is certainly not a drafting class. The
intent of this class is to learn how to quickly
read a building’s story, define its basic shapes,
and then sketch that story using scale,
proportion, texture, shadow, and basic perspective.
This informal class will begin with some group
instruction and then sketching exercises with
one-on-one advice. Exercises will include how to
draw building detail, buildings as backdrop, and
will briefly cover drawing interior rooms. James
Nutt is a local architect and urban sketching
instructor. In previous urban sketching classes,
enough questions on buildings have consistently
surfaced to make this a great indoor class for the

This course will be an open discussion and critique
of photographic skills and technology. Join Robert
and David, along with an invited professional
photographer, for a session of critique and review
of their compositions. Time permitting, there will
be an opportunity to do a photo walkabout at
the art center and a critique of those images. Be
prepared to complete assignments for following
sessions. Participants are encouraged to bring
a selection of up to 5 images (digital or prints),
which will be reviewed by the instructors and

This class is for those who enjoy taking pictures
with their iPhone and wish they knew how to
use it in a creative way. Whether on vacation, at
a family reunion, or day-to-day snapshots, the
iPhone can be a powerful companion to capture

such as exposure, composition, the importance of
resolution, applications, and various ways to share

their artwork, there is a process for gaining grant/
financial support and writing a successful grant
application. Join this workshop to learn the tools
needed to research, source, and write grants
specifically targeted to support the individual artist.
This instructor has been a professional fundraiser
and grant writer for the last 10 years, and will
show students where to locate local and national
grant opportunities, specific examples of what
grantees are looking for when evaluating grant
applications, and how to write a compelling grant.
This will be an informative workshop designed to
get students to write their first grant or improve
upon their grant writing skills. After registering,
students should e-mail Kathy a copy of the grant
they are working on, a past grant application, or
specific grants they are considering (email address
will be provided upon registration). This will allow
Kathy to review the grants prior to the workshop
and provide feedback. Working on actual grant

Join David S. Cargo to learn how to bake in a
wood-fired oven. Students will learn how to make
dough for flatbreads (including naan and pita)
and pizza, and how to fire-roast vegetables. All
of these foods will be baked on site in the Mary
& Peter Gove wood-fired oven. Students will leave
with knowledge of wood-fired ovens, the nature
of baking at different temperature ranges, several
recipes for a wood-fired oven, and practice baking
in one of these ovens.

Join award-winning baker David S. Cargo to
learn how to build a portable stacked-brick
oven. The oven is built from stacked bricks that
are not mortared together and can be moved
after the oven is built. Students will learn how
to build a small oven by themselves and go from
bare ground to cooking pizza in about 4 hours.
Class discussion covers some of the differences
between these portable brick ovens and more
familiar designs such as Alan Scott ovens, Forno
Bravo Pompeii ovens, and cob ovens such as
those made popular by Kiko Denzer. The class
covers siting the oven, preparing the ground for
the oven, and then the practical techniques for
construction. Every student gets a handout with
plans for three different sizes of ovens, their bills
of materials, and recipes for use with the oven.
The oven is built to demonstrate the techniques
used, and the plans that show how the ovens go
together will be read. While the fire is heating
the oven up, David demonstrates how to make
dough for pizza, bread, naan, and pita bread.
Later in the afternoon, the dough is formed into
the proper shapes for baking, and some dough is
formed for a loaf of bread. Finally, the pita bread,
naan, and pizzas are baked (and eaten) and then
the loaf of bread goes into the oven. Please bring
a lunch for an hour break at noon, plus hat,
gloves, note-taking materials and sturdy shoes
(in case of falling bricks).

Paella Valenciana

The Paella is the pan used to cook this legendary dish, and Valenciana refers to the region of
Spain on the shores of the Mediterranean where
it originated. It is typically cooked outdoors in
the countryside on a dry wood fire. The paella
must be set at a suitable height to be surrounded
by flames during the first part of the cooking,
and the fire must be kept burning at the correct
strength. Generally, good paella depends not so
much on the quality of the ingredients as on
combining all the components in the correct
proportions. The five basic elements - oil, water,
rice, heat and cooking receptacle - need be balanced with an almost mathematical precision.
The experience and personal touch of whoever
is in charge of the cooking are also of utmost
importance. The preparation of a paella in the
countryside is a ritualistic, festive occasion which
can sometimes turn into a gastronomic debate!
The relaxed, lighthearted atmosphere is
punctuated with jokes and comments on the
progress of the food. The experience culminates
when the paella is deemed ready, removed from
the fire and carried to the table. Paella Valenciana
has Bomba rice, rabbit or pork, green beans,
chicken, snails, tomatoes, paprika, and saffron.
Peggy’s version of Paella Valenciana will use
seafood, pork, chicken, beans, chorizo, and
Bomba rice. That’s a mouthful! Bring an apron
to class.

Students will start out designing their piece using
Polymer clay and a variety of texture sheets and
shape templates. Once the design has been
finalized, students begin working with Precious
Metal Clay. This clay contains silver particles, water,

sticky Play-Doh. After drying in a dehydrator the
pieces are fired in a kiln. Finally the jewelry is
polished and a patina may be applied. Leave the

This bracelet is a modern twist on a traditional
chain maille bracelet design. Each student will
start out with sterling silver jump rings and end
up with a custom bracelet. While the pattern
looks complicated, it is as simple as counting to
six, because the design is repeated after every six
jump rings. Pliers are provided, but students can
bring their own if they wish. Students will also
learn how to make jump rings at home. Those who
need magnification for this close hand work should
bring their own.
Learn how to make a beautiful wrap bracelet out
of beaded leather and semi-precious stones in one
day. Using leather cord, beading thread, 4mm semiprecious gemstones, and a button, this is possible.
Students will cut and measure the leather cord
and string the button. After securing the cord on a
clipboard, a bead is strung on the thread and sewn
around the leather cord. This process is
continued until the desired bracelet length
is reached. Please bring a bag lunch and
magnification if needed for this close hand work.

and create a 10.5” square shallow serving bowl.
Each student will create their design based on the

During the creation process, students will have the
opportunity to use glass saws and grinders. Glass
cutting experience is helpful, but not necessary.

kiln firing is complete. All students should wear

to be pulled back and put into a binder.

technique. Students will first decide on the pattern
of their piece. Pattern sheets are available for use

attach copper rings for hanging. Students can

Introduction to
Mosaics: Window
Mosaic
Learn the basics of making a mosaic in this
introductory class. After instruction on glass safety
and glass cutting techniques, students will be given
an 8” x 10” glass surface to design surrounded by
a zinc channel (border). Students should come with
a simple design in mind that they would like to
create. After glass pieces are cut they are glued to
a sheet of glass. The final step is grouting the piece
to enhance the look of the design. There will be
rings attached to the border so the finished mosaic
window can be hung. All tools are provided and
no previous glass cutting experience is required.
All students should wear long pants and close-toed
shoes. Long hair needs to be pulled back and put

Mosaic Night Light
This is an easy mosaic project for the beginner and
a great way to spend an afternoon. Students should
come with a simple design in mind for their night
light. After pieces of glass are cut for the mosaic,
they are glued to a sheet of glass. Since heatactivated glue is used, there is no need to wait for
the glue to dry. The piece will then be grouted to
enhance the look. A night light will be attached to
the back of the mosaic piece using the same glue
that was used on the glass pieces. All students

Experience
the Labyrinth
Creating a labyrinth is a creative and spiritual
process. Exploring the labyrinth through creation
can allow deeper understanding and insight.
Participants use the labyrinth to explore colors,
symbols, and images of personal significance, and
with guidance, express these on a 60 inch hemmed
cotton canvas to create a personal size piece of
walkable art suitable for display, large enough
to walk, and small enough to fit in any home.
All materials and instruction are provided –
no experience required.
Whether an experienced traveler or new to the way
of the labyrinth, come and join others on the path
for a morning of reflection and renewal. Gather
together for a brief introduction to the labyrinth
followed by time to walk, reflect, and share at the
close of the morning. Participants may bring a
journal to extend and integrate their experience.
Discover how each labyrinth journey offers the
gift of time and space to rest…release…and return,
renewed and refreshed.

or construction issues. Students in this class will

Family Fun with
Bronze Clay
Stamped Leather
Bracelet
Make a one-of-a-kind piece of metal art! Create
charms using bronze clay, which can be stamped
with a design, name, or even message on it. After
the piece is dried, it is fired in a kiln where the
binder burns away, leaving a beautiful charm that
can be made into a pendant, bracelet, or put on a
key chain or backpack. Come ready to get messy!
This is a great class for the entire family to take
together. Students can pick up their pieces the
following week in the WBCA office.
Come ready to design and hammer a pattern
onto a beautiful leather bracelet! First, learn how
to do leather stamping by decorating a leather
bookmark which can also be turned into a small
wall hanging. Then make a leather bracelet with
designs you choose yourself! No sharp instruments
are involved, just a wooden mallet. This project
makes a great Mother’s Day gift!

a variety of sculpting tools and techniques to
create pets, zoo animals, and/or fantasy creatures.
Use your imagination to transform your pencil
sketches into original clay sculptures. During
the second half of class, create your own unique
decorative masks out of clay. A variety of cultural
masks will be introduced and explained in class.
The masks will later be glazed and fired with
decorative materials added at the end. Materials

Payment for class tuition must be made to the office at least three business days prior to class.
You must register in advance through the office. Instructors do not take registrations.
Late registrations are accepted when there is room. However, classes with insufficient enrollment
are canceled at least two days prior to the start of class.
We do not assume that students will return to a class they are currently taking or took in the
past. You must register with the office in order to continue. If we do not hear from you, we
assume you will not be taking the class.
Material fees are payable directly to the instructor at class. Do not include the material fee with
the class tuition. Please bring exact change for the instructor.
Read the supply lists before attending class. Unless noted, instructors do not provide supplies
to students. If you are unable to access the supply list, notify the office.
We will make every effort to accommodate individual needs. Please notify the office if you have
any special requirements.
Classes are held at multiple locations. Read the catalog description carefully to ensure you
go to the right location.
Please do not arrive more than 10 minutes before class, instructors need preparation time.
Students are responsible for cleaning up before class ends. If you make a mess, clean it up.
We do not prorate or give credit for missed classes, except in extraordinary circumstances.
WBCA reserves the right to remove a student from our programming if their behavior is deemed
disruptive by the instructor and/or Art Center staff.

contribution helps support our many programs, and all
gifts, great and small are appreciated! Memberships are
valid for one year. First time students may deduct
a one-time 15% from their tuition fee.
Class capacity is limited and classes are filled on a first-come,
first-served basis. Early registration helps us reduce class
cancellations. Registrations require payment at least three
business days prior to the first class so we can accurately
make cancellation decisions. Late registrations will be taken
if space permits. Confirmations are not sent to students.
If a class must be canceled, a full refund will be issued.
Student tuitions cover direct costs of instructors and
supplies, while memberships and other contributions help
cover critical operating expenses.
ABSENTEE POLICY: Tuition is not pro-rated or refunded
for missed classes. Credits or refunds will not be issued for
cancellations less than three days before a class and a $5
clerical fee will be charged.
