Painting a Sea Turtle
Sylvia Benson
Sea turtles have wonderful patterning on their backs
and legs that is perfect for the texturing techniques
used with watercolor. The many different colors of
sea turtles add to the intrigue of painting them.
There will be pictures to work from but students can
bring their own as well. Look for a picture that has a
pleasing shape that would work well in an elongated
form. There will be step-by-step instruction and
individual help. Students may bring other projects
they need help with.

This is a unique offering, open to ages 12 and
above, available to both the beginner and the
seasoned professional, blending east and west in
an artistic, responsive environment.
All civilizations leave an imprint of their lives- figures
on rock, stone, or paper. Children leave their fleeting
fingerprints in the sand, or a pen stroke on paper.
Feeling for oneself what it is to leave a trace with
just a brush dipped in ink is an endlessly amazing
experience. It tells us a little something about what
the act of creation is all about. Sumi-e is the Asian
word for “ink picture.” In sumi-e, the simplest of
tools have been able to create outstanding beauty.
Every sumi-e artist uses those traditional materials
to create their work: sumi-e ink, bamboo brush, and
Asian paper. In this class students will use those same
materials and become more familiar with this ancient
and relevant art form. The sobriety of the form, black
and white combined with the skillful brushstroke,
continues, after countless centuries, to provide
an insight into the imperceptible, ever-changing
richness of life. Sumi-e is an art form but also a
philosophy and a feeling. It is touching the world
around us with all of our senses and in turn, letting
the world touch us before transforming that touch
into the language of brush and ink. Sumi-e, like
any art form, is about a sense of transitions, about
transformations.

Crazy About Collages
Workshop
Bonnie Cutts
Collages are works of art created using a variety
of materials that are ‘glued’ or attached to a
surface. Learn about making acrylic gel skins (like
decals) which can be incorporated into artwork
along with papers, fabrics, words, and any personal
items. Collages can be personally charged, playful,
insightful, humorous, or just plain fun. Learn about
and use a variety of acrylic materials as surfaces
to work on as participants work with composition,
balance, color, and design. Explore new acrylic
materials for interesting textures and apply them
along with the found materials to the collage. All
acrylic paints, gels, and mediums provided. $15
materials fee paid to instructor.
Bring to class: Favorite paint brushes, palette
knives, palettes, water container, scissors, ruler,
favorite drawing tools, anything personal to collage—
decorative papers, ribbons, stamps, old paintings to
cut up, bring laser printed copy to attach phrases
(inkjet will wash away), anything personal. For a
quick and easy way to transfer an image to the
collage, bring some laser prints of photos. Bring 2
surfaces to work on—at least 11” x 14”. Bring images
to reference as a starting point. Class ID: 227S Date/Time: Tuesday & Wednesday, May 7 & 8, 10:00 AM-4:00 PM

Each week students will use a different medium
and explore the basics. This instructor will provide
a practice exercise and all the supplies each week.
The first week students will experience the beauty of
watercolor as it magically explodes on paper. In week
two, colors will come alive with pastels by painting
on dark colored surfaces! During weeks 3 and 4,
students can discover what paintings are hiding
inside their hearts with acrylic paints on canvas! The
supplies for each lesson will be included in the supply
fee but please bring any kind of sketchbook and a
fine tip permanent marker. No experience necessary.

Dream Workshop for
All Mediums
Jan Gillen
This workshop is for artists looking to open up their
creative ideas and expressions. Dreams are a part
of the human experience; universal and powerful,
sometimes complicated with narratives, sometimes
just fleeting fragments-dreams inspire and speak to
us. Open up creative expression in a fun workshop
that explores the history of dreams in art, the dream
process, and how to translate dreams into a work of
art in any medium. For experienced artists looking
to shake things up a bit, or someone who has never
made art before, this class will help explore creativity
from dreams on out. The Dream Workshop starts
the first evening with a Power Point lecture on
the history of dreams in art and discussion thereof.
The next session, participants will bring in their
choice of mediums as the class proceeds in making
artwork based on dreams.

beeswax which contains a resin as a hardening agent

an ancient art form dating back to the Greeks,
which was revived by Jasper Johns and has gained
popularity since the 90s. This medium is exciting
because of its flexibility and versatility. Wax can be
moved with a hot air gun, textured with tools,

Drawing on the Right
Side of the Brain
Suzanne Starks
Some people have always wanted to learn how to
draw but have been scared because they lack an
artistic background or believe one needs to have
“inborn talent.” This unique class will put those fears
to rest, using an acclaimed workbook with drawing
exercises and accompanying short lessons that will
teach how to draw using the right side of the brain,
which is where non-verbal and creative abilities are
concentrated. Drawing is simply copying what is
seen – and learning how to “see” correctly in order
to learn to draw better. The exercises are designed
to help make the switch to the right side using tricks
and techniques that have proven to be amazingly
effective in teaching even complete novices how to
draw. For students who already draw, this class will
give greater confidence in their ability and deepen
their artistic perception. This is a beginning course
which covers 2 of the 5 basic perceptual skills of
drawing: the perception of edges and the perception
of spaces. Handouts outlining the material, a
workbook tailored to the subject, and individual
critiques will help everyone accomplish their goal of
drawing better. Students will draw a “before” and
“after” picture – and be astounded at the difference.
Please register at least a week in advance for this
class.

Calligraphy
•••
Beginning Calligraphy Pat Barrett
The application of calligraphy (“the art of beautiful
writing”) is endless. It can be used for creating
wedding invitations, greeting cards, or addressing
envelopes; it can be used to enhance arts and crafts
projects such as nature printing, scrap booking,
photography, personalizing picture frames, writing
in hand-made books, or even enhancing fine art
paintings. In this class students will learn the basic
steps necessary to write the lower-case Italic hand.
The basic steps to be learned in this class include:
getting comfortable with the broad-edge pen; letter
proportion; letter shape, slant, and stroke direction;
the importance of spaces, and many other pertinent
points in the art of calligraphy. Because these steps
are the basis for any calligraphic hand, the students
should leave the last class being able to analyze other
‘hands’ and also have a better understanding of the
steps necessary to recreate them. Please bring a piece
of 18 x 24” foam core. The instructor will discuss
other supplies at the first class.
Please note: Students that have already learned the
basics of calligraphy yet desire to have more
guidance are welcome.

THANKS to YOU!!!!!!!!
The Gateway to the Arts Capital Campaign has reached a milestone of nearly 90% of funds needed to complete this amazing new facility.
The committee has worked hard over the past two years and yet, there is still work to ensure a strong and complete finish.
WBCA’s website lists items needed for the new building, allowing you to direct your gift to an area of special interest or affection,
and there are still legacy naming opportunities available. Remember, pledges of any size can be made over five years.
Please join the growing list of supporters of the Gateway to the Arts Capital Campaign.
Go to www.whitebeararts.org to make a gift today.
