A Galaxy Of Stars 2016 To Honor Dawson Grimsley
July, 2016
A Galaxy Of Stars 2016 To Honor Dawson Grimsley
In April 2008 Senior Services, along with
Spangles’ Rene Steven Brand, KAKE TV’s
Susan Peters and Davis-Moore’s Dawson
Grimsley, embarked on a fresh idea for a new
fundraising event, “A Galaxy of Stars Celebrity
Roast of Dawson Grimsley.” Since the
inaugural event, it has expanded to include
tributes and has become the largest fundraiser
in Senior Services’ history. Now in its 8th year,
the event has paid homage to some of
Wichita’s most prominent people, who have all
been “roasted and toasted” to support the
work of Senior Services.
The 2016 roast/tribute has come full circle
and will honor the retirement of Dawson
Grimsley. This event will spotlight the 40 years
that Dawson and Davis-Moore Auto Group
have spent making Wichita a better place to
live. New to the roasting panel in 2016 are Jeff
Johnson, president of Flint Hills National Golf
Course, Don Hall from KEYN radio and Charlie
Stark, founder of ComfortCare Homes and The
Grumpy Old Men. Returning celebrity roasters
Susan Peters and Bucky Walters are crowd
favorites, while Rene Steven continues to reign
as Roast Master.
The event will take place on Saturday,
Aug. 20, 2016 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel. A
“Red Carpet”
mingling party kicks
off the festivities at
5:30 p.m. with
complimentary wine
and appetizers.
Guests then sit down
to an elegant dinner
of beef tenderloin at
7 p.m. with the roast
commencing at 8
p.m. The appeal of “A
Galaxy of Stars” lies
in the entertainment
it provides. This gala holds only a couple live
auctions and focuses on an elegant evening
celebrating some of Wichita’s most influential
people.
Since 2008, Dawson and Davis-Moore Auto
Group have become some of the biggest
supporters and volunteers for Senior Services.
“I’m turning 60 this year and started
thinking about my wife and I getting older.
What if we need assistance one day?” Dawson
says. “I’m thankful that we have family and
resources, but what do people do when they
don’t have that? The programs of Senior
Services are crucial to their well-being. After
all – we all have the same goal – to be senior
citizens one day.”
To date, Jack DeBoer’s 2015 roast and
tribute holds the record for the largest
fundraising event for Senior Services,
generating $160,000 with 530 guests. Jack
has “challenged” Dawson to raise more money
than his event. Dawson is up for the test: “We
(continued on page 2)
Dawson Grimsley Retirement Tribute Set For August 20
(continued from page 1)
WILL beat the DeBoer roast and raise a bunch
of money!”
Several sponsorship opportunities are
available for individuals and corporations.
Individual tickets are on sale now and priced
at $115 per ticket while a table of 10 can be
purchased for $1,000. You can become an
event sponsor or purchase tickets by calling
316-267-0302 ext. 216 or visit the website at
www.seniorservicesofwichita.org. Look for “A
Galaxy of Stars 2016” under the News & Events
tab.
Senior Services is proud to celebrate an
icon in the business community whose passion
for corporate citizenship and philanthropy
goes unmatched. Please join us in “roasting
and toasting” Dawson the only way we know
how – the Galaxy way – a night filled with
laughter and love - all to support a wonderful
cause.
This event is intended for adult audiences
only.

four-part series of classes on the Chisholm
Trail at the Downtown Senior Center, 200 S.
Walnut, on Fridays, October 7-28, 1-3 p.m.
Beccy Tanner will lead the classes.
Kansas is considered the crossroads for many
of the historic trails of the Old West. In its
heyday from the late 1860s through the 1880s,
the Chisholm Trail served as a cattle pipeline
from Texas ranches to the stockyards and
railroad hubs in Abilene, Newton, Wichita and
Caldwell. It was an economic lifeline for
Kansas, helping to promote the railroad and
making ranching profitable. This next year,
2017, marks the 150th anniversary of the trail.
Class topics include the history and folklore
surrounding the trail, famous characters,
locations and the long-lasting legacy the trail
still holds for the nation.
The course is free for students 60+ years of
age who enroll prior to September 16, 2016.
Pick up your registration form from one of the
Senior Centers, or visit www.wichita.edu/

Northeast Senior Center
Hello Everyone!!!
I hope you are making the most of this good weather. The summertime is a time of fun and
relaxation for most people. But for seniors, the heat and sun can be dangerous if the proper
precautions are not taken. Here are some great tips that seniors, as well as their caregivers, can
use to make sure they have a fun, safe summer:
1. Stay Hydrated – Seniors are more susceptible to dehydration than younger people because
they lose their ability to conserve water as they age.
2. Talk to your Doctor – Make sure any medications you are on will not be affected by higher
temperatures especially if you do not have air conditioning in your home.
3. Keep Your Cool – Even small increase in temperature can shorten the life expectancy for seniors
who are coping with chronic medical conditions.
4. Stay in Touch – High temperatures can be life-threatening. Let friends and family know if you’ll
be spending an extended period of time outdoors, even if you are only gardening.
5. Know who to call – Prepare a list of emergency phone numbers and place them in an easy to
access area.

Ways to Eat Healthy During
the Summer Months
Between barbecues and vacation getaways,
it is easy to skimp on the exercise, but pile on
the food during the warmer months. Try these
tips to make your summer months a little
healthier.
With produce at its peak during the
summer months, now is the perfect time to
indulge in nature’s finest by eating the freshest
vegetables and fruit.
1. Take advantage of Fresh Produce:
• Veggies – Tomatoes, Avocados, Green, and
Bell Peppers
• Fruits – When choosing fruits, always make
sure to buy the freshest, best quality.
2. Choose Lean Meats – Instead of going
for the traditional fare, choose leaner meats.
Healthier meat alternatives include ground
turkey and skinless chicken breast. Fish is a
very important part of a healthier diet.
3. Be Smart About Cold Treats Choices –
To satisfy your sweet tooth and not feel guilty
about it; look for some healthier alternatives to
the typical calorie-laden summer treats. Buy
low-fat versions of fat-free and sugar-free ice
cream or try a sugar-free sorbet, which is a
lower-calorie, refreshing alternative.
Experiment with different brands and
remember to control your portions!
4. Stay Quenched - With scorching hot
temperatures and outdoor activities ramping
up dehydration is a major concern. To stay
hydrated during the summer, buy a reusable
water bottle and keep it with you all the time
as a reminder to take sips regularly.

Greetings Everyone!!
Now that the weather is good for crops, I would like to share some information about fruits and
vegetables. Many older adults don’t eat enough fruits and vegetables. Only 30 percent of people
65 and older eat five or more daily servings of fruits and vegetables – the minimum amount
recommended for good nutrition. While more seniors than younger people meet this suggested
allotment, the numbers still fall short.
Eating plenty of fruits and vegetables is especially important as you get older, because the
nutrients and fiber in these foods can help reduce high blood pressure, lower your risk of heart
disease, stroke, and certain cancers, stave off eye and digestive problems – and simply satisfy your
hunger.
As you get older, certain age-related changes can make it more difficult to get the fruits and
vegetables you need including: difficulty chewing, changes in taste, mobility problems, lack of
motivation to cook, and changes in appetite.
Follow these tips for increasing the amount of fruit and vegetables you eat each day: add fruit
and vegetables to every meal, try new produce, cook vegetarian, snack on produce, and find ways
to incorporate fruits and vegetables into foods you already eat. To get the most out of the fruits
