Origins of Earth Plasters
Origins of Earth Plasters

Throughout history earth plasters have been
used in the building processes–
Mud huts
–
Historic Egyptian buildings
–
Renaissance time
–
Widely and easily available
–
Durable and long lasting
–
Qualities of material allows for wide range
of looks
Origins of Earth Plasters

Renaissance era
–
The use of earth plasters perfected to an art
form
–
Artists like Michelangelo used it in his
fresco art
–
Many ancient structures were created with
beauty in mind and for structural purposes
–
Marble columns were too weighty so
veneer earth plasters allowed marble to still
be used in places like Venice
Origins of Earth Plasters



The Lime Cycle

Lime is the most widely used decorative
earth plaster, most durable, and most
beautiful.

Lime is also known as Calcium Carbonate.

Chalk, Limestone, ect.


After it is quarried it is burned in ovens to
create quick lime(calcium oxide)
Drives off carbon dioxide.
The Lime Cycle



Next the powder is hydrated with water in a
process called Slaking
Slaking changes the lime to Calcium
Hydroxide
There are three forms of Calcium Hydroxide
–
Hydrated lime
–
Hydrolic lime
–
Lime putty(ancient uses)
The Lime Cycle





Sand is added to Lime putty to create a
mortar.
Once the lime gets into contact with carbon
dioxide it begins to harden.
Lime putty will harden(calcify) returning
back to calcium carbonate, it's original form.
When choosing a finish with lime make sure
it is made out of lime putty.
The sand added can be varied in size
depending on the desired finish.
