s I have said before, I’ve fallen in love with LuminArte
Twinkling H2O cake watercolors. I can make them
work just like acrylics and the effects
are fascinating. I squirt a lot of water
onto the cakes about two hours before I paint. Then I stir them with a
palette knife to make a paste. (When
you’re done, you can simply leave the
lids off and the paints will dry back
to cake form until you’re ready to use
them again.) Next, I pick them up
with my palette knife and put them
on my Masterson Sta-Wet palette.
If you have not worked with these
paints before, it’s time to try them
out. You’ll be fascinated at what you
can do with just a little practice. For
goodness sake, don’t be afraid! The
paint contains mica, and the colors
are simply luscious.
LET’S PAINT
BACKGROUND
Begin by painting the edges with
China Black. Let dry.
n Step 1: Using a sea sponge, pick
up a tiny bit of thinned Spiced Pumpkin and dab it on one corner of the
clayboard. Rinse your sponge, and
in the lower left-hand corner dab on
a little Sunflower followed by Forest

Green. Add a tiny touch of Key Lime
in the right-hand corner.
n Step 2: Blot your sponge on a
rag or paper towel and sort of merge
the colors together by daubing. I
sometimes add a little bit of water at this stage to get the colors to
run. You can make the colors as soft
or intense as you want—and if you
don’t like it, you can wipe them off.
That’s right—wipe them off. Yes, it
will leave a stain on the clayboard,
but don’t let that bother you. You
can just paint right over it again.
n Step 3: Once the surface has
dried, you may flyspeck it with
whatever colors you like using an
old toothbrush. Please note that
this step is optional and that on the
Color Step by Step I’ve used canvas
rather than clayboard; there is of
course more bleed on canvas because
it, unlike clayboard, has a textured
surface. Bear this in mind as you
compare results.
n Step 4: Allow the surface to dry
and then neatly transfer as much of
the design as you wish. Add stamped
leaves where you desire or as indicated on the design.

PUMPKIN
n Step 1: Double-load a large flat
brush with Orange Peel and Spiced
Pumpkin. Shade all the way around
the outside edge of the pumpkin
with the Orange Peel. Put the separate sections in with a float of Spiced
Pumpkin, referring to the worksheet
for placement. Let dry.
n Step 2: Double-load the brush
with Orange Peel and Spiced Pumpkin.
Fill in the pumpkin as shown on the
worksheet.
n Step 3: Fill the brush with Gold
Dust and brush over the Orange Peel;
this will give the pumpkin a wonderful sheen. Let dry.
n Step 4: Apply colors to the rubber stamp. I used Heavenly White at
the tip of the leaf, followed by Key
Lime, Forest Green and finally a little
Nutmeg or Spiced Pumpkin; you can
use these colors in this same way or
as you wish. Let the clayboard dry after applying the leaf stamp.
n Step 5: Highlight the edges of
the pumpkin sections with Heavenly
White.
n Step 6: Fill the liner brush with
Key Lime and paint the curlicues,
going back over them with Forest

FINISHING
When the entire piece is dry, mist
many times with a clear acrylic spray
to set the watercolors. When the
spray dries, you may varnish with the
product of your choice and frame as
desired. y

Green or Nutmeg. Add stems here
and there in Key Lime shaded with
Forest Green, Nutmeg or both. Highlight with Heavenly White.
n Step 7: To shadow, double-load
the brush with Gold Dust and Spiced
Pumpkin, creating a lovely gradation
from dark to medium to light. Carefully apply this shadow around the
leaves as shown on the Step by Step
and in the finished painting. Let the
piece dry thoroughly.
