Armstrong of Alliance, Dane Armstrong of Tulsa, Okla., and

OMAHA — Nebraska’s giant pumpkin king is hoping
to soon top his own state
record of 770.5 lbs. set last
year.
Omahan Blase Biga has a
pumpkin in his back yard
that very well may break that
record.
“It (the pumpkin) has a 13foot circumference and its estimated weight is well over
800 lbs. If it goes heavy, it
may go over 900 lbs.,” Biga
said. Weights are estimated
based upon measurements
taken on over 500 giant
pumpkins each year around
the world.
Biga encourages other people who enjoy pumpkins and
gardening to try to grow heir
own giant pumpkins. :It’s a lot
of fun to see how big they can
get, and makes for a nice
spectacle at Halloween,” Biga
added.
Last year Biga donated his
record pumpkin to the elephants at the Henry Doorly
Zoo, and plans to do the same
this year.
“I had read on the internet
that elephants like to eat
pumpkin, so just called them
(Henry Doorly Zoo) up, and
they were thrilled to get it,”
stated Biga.
For people wanting to grow
giant pumpkins, Biga plans to
give away 100 seeds from his
giant pumpkin on a first
come, first served basis
through the Heartland Giant
Pumpkin Growers Association, www.hgpga.org and click
on the “Free Seeds” link.
He also plans to make
seeds available for purchase.

TOO CLOSE — Lightning sparked three range fires Sept. 21 charring the vegetation up to the
yard of Bryan and Trudy Henderson's home about 35 miles west of Alliance on the Box
Butte/Sioux County line. In addition to the Earl Henderson and Sons ranch two other properties
received damage. The fires burned about 8,000 acres. The area blackened was five miles long
and about two wide at its widest point. The Hendersons lost about 1,000 trees and had some machinery damage. Their livestock fared better though as cattle were turned out ahead of the fire.
On the Henderson ranch, burned land had been allowed to grow this season and was planned
for grazing. This area of the county had not sustained a major grass fire in recent years. Several
fires were sparked at 3 p.m. then merged. They were extinguished by 6 p.m. Gusty winds helped
to spread the flames. It was one of numerous blazes ignited by lightning Sept. 21.
