Corporation Representative Megan Leicht, 2017 2 Letter from our President Happy Fall Alumni Sisters!! I'm writing this letter as I prepare to go on my fourth annual wine tour with my Clio pledge sisters! I am so excited I can hardly sit still to write! This summer I have been blessed with many visits with my Clio sisters: from attending a Clio wedding in Charleston, to having Clios present at my engagement party, to dinners with those passing through the DC area. These visits remind me of the support active sisters and alumni have for our fellow Clios! On that note, I'd like to thank everyone for their support during the Greek Challenge. Clio came in third place, which is awesome! I'd also like to thank the actives for notifying us of the Greek Challenge, and encouraging the Corp and alumni to get involved. For those of you who shared fun pictures and memories with us throughout the Challenge, thank you! Positive support of Clio and of the active sisters is always lovely to see! This is what having a Corp and an active Alumni base is all about. We want to keep the support going strong!! Please continue to use the Facebook Clio Alumni page for networking and sharing stories of your days at Geneseo! If any of you have ideas for fundraising events like the recent Clio Sister Keg in NYC, please let us know. We are willing to help with any activities that will keep the Daisy spirit alive and bring alumni (and actives) closer! Thanks again for the support over the past few months! Have a wonderful holiday season; don't forget to reach out to your Clio sisters and let them know how grateful you are for them! Love-‐in-‐Clio, Kristen Felicione '10 Sorority Alumni Liaison The house is always in need of items, so think of donating to the Clio House! Contact me at [email protected] to arrange delivery to the Clio house. Thank you very much for your support as alumni! Love-‐in-‐Clio, Sara Scholomiti Rook '95 40% of alumni receive all of their correspondence via email. Spread the word that we want to increase this percentage. Alumni can email Abbey Clark ([email protected]) with their email addresses. 3 Letter from our Fundraising Chairperson Dear Sisters of Phi Kappa Pi, I’d like to give a huge Thank You shout-‐out to everyone who attended the Alumni Sister Keg fundraising event in NYC. Although we did not officially raise any money, we did break even with the venue cost and were able to spread the word for future fundraising events! I am very grateful and pleased with the result. Since the NYC area is tough to travel to and can be quite expensive, I’ve been looking at planning something similar in the Central NY area for the Spring of 2015. Anyone who knows of any possible venues, please feel free to reach out! In the meantime, I will be holding a 50/50 Raffle! Sisters will mail me a (optional) donation along with their business card and a brief summary of what they do for a living/how they got to that area/advice on post-‐graduation/etc. I will give half of proceeds to the sorority corporation, and draw a business card/name to reward the other half to. After the raffle, I will coordinate with our Webmaster to post the networking information on our website! I feel this will turn out to be a very inspiring and informational fundraiser for both actives and alumni. This idea is still in the works, so please keep your eyes and ears open for further details! Again, any suggestions are also welcome for future fundraising ideas. Thank you all for your support. Love-‐in-‐Clio Jacqueline Thompson ‘12 Letter from our Treasurer Dear Sisters, Congratulations to the actives on winning the Greek Challenge! The Corporation is so proud of the collective effort displayed by our alumni and we wanted to extend a heartfelt thank you. As we move past this challenge into a new school year, I sincerely hope we can channel the enthusiasm towards a commitment to make an annual donation to Clio! A donation to the Corporation will directly benefit our goals and our girls, and help to further realize our dream of owning a residence -‐ solidifying our presence in Geneseo for generations to come. Love–in–Clio, Jill Scalzo ’12 4 Letter from the Actives Dear Beautiful Alumni, We are so excited to announce our newest pledge class of four -‐ Amelia Heiselman, Maria Velasquez, Bat-‐ Or Rosenberg, and Lindsay Grome! They are going to make a beautiful addition to Clio and we can’t wait to call them sisters. In addition to the various charities each of our actives support throughout the year, this semester, we are focusing our charity work as a whole to benefit the local community, specifically the Teresa House Comfort Care Home. The Teresa House is a local hospice that many of our active sisters are heavily involved in. We will be hosting a “Clioween” Downtown once more at the Statesmen with the brothers of Sig Tau at the end of October, from which all proceeds will go towards the Teresa House and their cause. Additionally, we will be hosting our Migrant Children’s Christmas party towards the end of the semester and participating in Relay for Life come springtime. On a different note, we wanted to take the time to thank all who participated in last semester’s Greek Challenge through Geneseo. The outflow of support was more than we ever could have imagined and we cannot thank you enough. Your donations to the school ultimately put Clio in 3rd place granting us $4,500 all while supporting your alma mater! This is money that we can put towards improving recruitment events, the house, fundraisers, alumni weekends, and much more! I know many of you were concerned about the condition of your composites after the 140th reunion and we are looking into restoring as many as we can with this money as well. We will, of course, keep you all updated on what we use the money for, but rest assured it will be used in a responsible manner. Your continued support means the world to us and we are so grateful to have alumni who hold Clio so close to their hearts even after their time here has passed. In the hopes to keep closer ties and open communication between the actives and alumni we have started a new email: [email protected]. Here you will be able to contact Lauren Furcinito our Senior Corporation Representative and Lindsay Carr our President. Please do not hesitate to contact us through this account or any of our active Clio sisters at their respective Geneseo emails! We are very excited for this upcoming Alumni Weekend, October 17-‐19th and we hope to see you all there!! Until we meet again… Love-‐in-‐Clio, The Active Sisters of Phi Kappa Pi 5 The Stage For the Fall 2014 Museletter, our president Kristen Felicione interviewed alumni sister Kristen Johanson. When did you pledge Clio and when did you graduate? I pledged in Spring '95 with the most amazing pledge class ever ... and I graduated in 1998. It's hard to believe how much time has passed! What is your career? I work in advertising sales; I'm currently a Sales Manger at Google, where I've worked for the past 8 years. I lead a team that is focused on advertising and marketing solutions across Google's various platforms for a specific subset of clients. Google's sales teams are organized by industry in order to create an expertise in our client's field. My team solely focuses on 10 large clients in the online education space. We work across all of Google offerings which include paid search, mobile, YouTube, a large network for display advertising, robust analytics/reporting tools, technology solutions for buying ads, maps/local offerings .... among others. How did you get into the field? As is often the case, my career path was definitely not linear and was influenced heavily by past experience and my networks. I majored in Communications at Geneseo, with a minor in Public Relations. I really was not sure what I wanted to do when I graduated, but knew I was interested in advertising and marketing. I applied for a variety of jobs and ended up accepting a role in a small dot com start up in New York City as an entry level assistant. It was a great role since it was a small company and it exposed me to many areas of business. I gravitated toward the Public Relations side and learned as much as I could from the PR Director, taking any side jobs she would give me. She knew someone at smaller marketing agency who was looking to hire an Account Executive and introduced me to her. I got the job and worked on promotional and event marketing campaigns for several years. When the dot com bubble burst, our agency -‐ which had a lot of digital start up 6 clients -‐ went out of business. Through one of my contacts there, I found a role in advertising sales for a Clear Channel radio station in NYC. I sold radio advertising there and at CBS Radio for several years before having the opportunity to interview at Google. At the time, Google was experimenting with technology to buy unsold inventory on radio stations, in real-‐time. My former manager at Clear Channel was working on this and helped me get the opportunity to interview.... and, happily, I got the job. Do you have any advice for alumni or actives who want to get into your career field, or start a big project, as you're doing? Make as large of a network as you can... this network will be invaluable to you as you take twists and turns in your career. Learn as much as you can from more experienced colleagues, ask questions and ask for opportunities to help them in anyway you can. The knowledge and experience they can give you will become your competitive advantage and will help you get ahead. Don't be afraid to start at the bottom and work your way up or to take a risk in "starting over"... and try not to have an ego. It's very rare for someone to start off in the position they dreamed of ... you have to learn, gain experience and earn credibility within your company and within your network. How can you give back as an alumni? I think the best way alumni can give back is to make ourselves available, as a network, for actives and other alumni. This can include reaching out about job opportunities, making ourselves available for informational interviews or even helping to proof-‐read resumes. We are so lucky to have a huge network of successful Clios in so many industries and I think so many of us are willing to help out... we just need to make sure we are making ourselves available in anyway we can. What's your favorite daisy-‐filled (Clio) memory? Oh, there is no way I could name just one! I've had 19 years & counting of incredible Clio memories. I've laughed until my stomach hurt, and have been utterly ridiculous with an incredible group of the best friends I could ever ask for. I could sit for hours and fill up 100 pages listing all the funny, crazy, happy moments we've had together -‐ and are still having! As well, there have been many sad and really difficult times that were only tolerable because we had each other. I guess if I had to give my "favorite" memory, it would probably be the incredible bachlorette party that was thrown for me 2 1/2 years ago. My incredible sisters picked me up singing the Bids song, all wearing shirts they had made for me! We had a great weekend of laughing and telling stories... there were just so many moments of incredible thoughtfulness... and my heart literally was bursting with love. A few months later, I looked around at my wedding and saw the faces of so many of my closest and dearest friends ... and realized that without Clio I would not have these people in my life. I had a moment of gratitude that I could never explain in words. 7 Did Clio help you get where you are today (career, family, etc)? Without a doubt! I firmly believe I learned more from Clio than I did from any of my classes at Geneseo! The leadership and communication skills that I gained are skills that I still use to this day in business. As well, and as importantly, the songs I learned have really helped to calm down my 14 month old daughter when everything else failed. I want to thank the generous donors who contributed to Clio via the Corporation this Fall: Bridget Kelly Bertoldo '81, Katharine Reilly Lustig '59 (in honor of her Clio roommate Martha Rusack Sandwag) and Lois R obbins Evans '50.Additionally, I would like to thank those who contributed to the Greek Challenge in the name of Clio! We certainly made our mark and showed amazing support for our actives! We want to be sure we have the funds to be able to hold Clio events, big and small, throughout the years or cover other expenses for alumni and actives in an effort to keep us all connected! And of course, donations only get us closer to our longtime dream of owning a home of our own. If you can spare anything, please think of Clio. We are so grateful for any and all donations! As a reminder, donations are being accepted year round for both the House and Memorial Funds. Currently, donations can be made through Paypal, on our new (and wonderful) website, www.cliogeneseo.com/alumni or by sending a check to the Corporation’s address: Clio Corporation 1335 Jefferson Road PO Box 22921 Rochester, NY 14692 Checks can be m ade payable to Alpha Clionian, Inc.
