June Events:
Friday, June 1: Adult Summer Reading Program Begins. Between the Covers is the theme for the 2012 Adult Summer
Reading Program. The program runs June 1 to August 31 with registration beginning on Friday, June 1.
Join us for special programs, displays, and activities. Everyone 18 and older is encouraged to participate in
this fun summer reading program. Participants pick an ‘alias’ and write a brief review for each book that
they read or listen to during the summer. Participants will receive a "goodie bag" with incentives, forms
and information when they sign up. Earn prizes and help other readers find their next great read! Theme
related programs or movies will be held on the the 1st, 3rd, and 5th Mondays at 7:00 pm. Additional special
programs, author visits, and displays may be held during these three months. Everyone who submits at
least one review will be eligible to attend a special party on Sunday, September 23. Stop in, call, or email
the library to learn more details or to sign up!
Saturday, June 2: Family Movies @ Your Library presents "We Bought A Zoo" @ 2:00 pm. Set in Southern California,
a father moves his young family to the countryside to renovate and re-open a struggling zoo. Stars Matt Damon and Scarlett
Johansen. Rated PG. (124 min.)
Monday, June 4: Books for Lunch Book Discussion @ 12:00 noon. This group gathers on the first Monday of each month to
discuss different books selected by the group. This month's selection is Angry Housewives Eating Bon Bons by Lorna Landvik. The
July selection is The Sugar Queen by Sarah Addison Allen. Bring your lunch, if you wish. Dessert and beverages are provided by the
participants or the Friends of the Library. New members are welcome to join at any time! Copies of the book will be available to
borrow from the library.
Monday, June 4: Dungeons and Dragons Players Club @ 6:00 pm. Join us for this monthly gaming event for D and
D players! This group meets the first and third Mondays of every month at 6:00 pm. The Library will have materials available
but feel free to bring your own. All ages and skill levels welcome. New members are welcome to join any time.
Monday, June 4: Between the Covers - Adult Summer Reading Program Kick-off Event: Pajama Party!
@ 7:00 pm. Everyone 18 and older is invited to this fun kick-off event for the Adult Summer Reading Program. Come
and sign up for the program (if you haven’t already) and enjoy pajama party fun – library style. Snacks, beverages and
prizes plus a late night movie for those who don’t want to go home!! Don’t forget to wear your pajamas!
Tuesday, June 5: Tuesday Nite @ the Movies showing of "New Year's Eve" @ 7:00 pm. The lives of several couples and
singles in New York intertwine over the course of New Year's Eve. Stars Sarah Jessica Parker, Ashton Kutcher, and Jessica Biel. Rated
PG-13. (118 min.)
Wednesday, June 6: Genealogy Club @ Your Library @ 6:30 pm. Whether you have been researching your family
tree for years or just want to start, you are invited to join other genealogy researchers in the library's genealogy room to help
each other with research, share tips and questions. This group meets the first Wednesday of each month at 6:30 pm. Helpful
handouts and laptop computers are available to use.
Wednesdays, June 6, 13, 20 & 27: Sit and Stitch @ 1:00 pm. Join other crafters at this weekly gathering to share crafting and
conversation. Gatherings are every Wednesday from 1 – 3 pm. New members are welcome to join at any time! Bring your hobby or
craft and come for lots of laughs, food, great company and experienced help!
Friday, June 8: Pokemon @ the James Kennedy Public Library from 1:00 - 4:00 pm. Come play, trade and meet other
people that play the Pokemon card game and video games! Participants should bring their own deck of cards or video games. This is
not a tournament, just a gathering to meet others who play Pokemon. Everyone is welcome.
Saturday, June 9: World Knit in Public Day from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. June 9 - 17 has been set aside to
show everyone that knitting (and all fiber crafts) can be a community activity. To celebrate this special week, members
of the JKPL "Sit 'n' Stitch" group will host a special open house in the Hoffman Community Room between 10:00 am
and 2:00 pm. Come see these talented crafters in action. Members of the group will have items on display and will
answer questions while they work on their newest projects. Everyone is welcome.

Saturday, June 9: St. Francis Xavier ARTmania Art Show Reception from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Join us for a
reception celebrating the close of the St. Francis Xavier Grade School art show at the JKPL. Stop in and visit with the
kindergarten to 6th grade kids who created these special works of art and get one last look at their beautiful artwork.
Everyone welcome.
Monday, June 11: Book Flicks presents "One for the Money" @ 7:00 pm. Unemployed and newly-divorced Stephanie Plum
lands a job at her cousin's bail-bond business, where her first assignment puts her on the trail of a wanted local cop from her romantic

Tuesday, June 12: Classic Movies showing of "Without Reservations" @ 2:00 pm. Kit Madden is traveling to Hollywood,
where her best-selling novel is to be filmed. Aboard the train, she encounters Marines Rusty and Dink, who don't know she is the author
of the famous book, and who don't think much of the ideas it proposes. She and Rusty are greatly attracted, but she doesn't know how to
deal with his disdain for the book's author. Stars John Wayne and Claudette Colbert. Not Rated ( 107 min.)
Tuesday, June 12: Own the Night Movies presents "Red Riding Hood" @ 7:00 pm. Set in a medieval village that is haunted

Chasing4Life
Chasing4Life is an educational organization under the direction of well-known author/educator Eddy Weiss. This
organization has a vision to change the way America views the issue of disaster preparedness. Chasing4Life's
educators present hundreds of programs nationwide each year on subjects ranging from tornado safety to environmental issues and climate change, from the importance of home disaster kits to agro-terrorism threat mitigation. Join us
as Eddy Weiss presents four very special programs on severe weather history and safety. This program is funded by
the Friends of the James Kennedy Public Library.
Friday, June 15 @ 10:00 am: FOR KIDS: Discover interesting facts about tornados, storm chasing, severe weather safety, and
hear stories of storm chases from present day and long ago. This program is geared for K-5th grades, but all ages are welcome.
Friday, June 15 @ 1:00 pm: FOR ADULTS: Learn about storm chasing and severe weather history. Find out why America is
losing its resilience to disasters and join the discussion. This program is geared for adults, but all ages are welcome.
Friday, June 15 @ 3:00 pm: "ARE YOU READY FOR THE ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE?" What will you do when the Zombies
arrive or disaster strike? Join us for this special program on what you can do to stay safe in any disaster. This program is geared for
teens, but all ages are welcome.
Saturday, June 16 @ 2:00 pm: SEVERE WEATHER SAFETY: Learn the importance of home disaster kits, family communication plan, and other ways you and your family can stay safe if a disaster strikes. All ages welcome.
Thursday, June 14: Paranormal Book Club @ 6:00 pm. The paranormal book club is a meeting of people who
enjoy the creepier side of life. Discussions will cover books, movies, comic books, etc. - anything dealing with the
supernatural. Topics will range from oddball styles of media to horror. Some of the material will have adult themes and
may not be appropriate for the young or squeamish. Meetings are on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of every month at 6:00
pm. For this meeting the group will read and discuss the book Storm Front by Jim Butcher. Copies of the book will be
available at the library.
Friday, June 15: Own the Night presents: Hypnotist Crimson @ 7:00 pm. Join stage hypnotist Crimson as she
combines comedy and hypnosis to make this one of our most memorable events ever! Everyone is welcome to attend, but
if you are under 18 and want to be hypnotized you must have your parent or legal guardian sign a release form. Sponsored
by the Teen Advisory Council of the Kennedy Library.
Saturday, June 16: Dream Big-Read! presents: The Night Sky @ 10:00 am. The Grout Museum of Waterloo will
bring the STARLAB, a portable planetarium to the library for a morning of exploration, education and fun. Space is
limited to 25 people per session. Sessions will run 10-10:20, 10:20-10:40 and 10:40 -11 am. First come first served, all ages
welcome. Funded by the Friends of the James Kennedy Public Library.

Monday, June 18: Between the Covers presents: Lavender Sachet craft class @ 7:00 pm. Join Diana and Sara and
learn how to make lavender sachets. This lovely sachet will provide many relaxing evenings. This simple craft will take only 30
minutes to create. Registration is requested.
Tuesday, June 19: Tuesday Nite @ the Movies showing of "This Means War" @ 7:00 pm. Two top CIA operatives wage an
epic battle against one another after they discover they are dating the same woman. Stars Reese Witherspoon, Chris Pine, and Tom
Hardy. Rated PG-13. (97 min.)

Zombie Apocalypse: Dyersville
Friday, June 22: Zombie Apocalypse: Dyersville from 2:00-8:00 pm @ West Side Park (the tree area behind
Xavier). The zombies are coming, are you prepared? Join us for this live-action role playing game and find out! Players will be
split into two teams - zombies and humans - and the war will begin! Games will start every hour and players will rotate teams each
game. Players may bring any type of nerf-esque gun and/or foam weapons they want to use (all gear must be approved before use).
13 and older are invited. Parental permission required for anyone under age 18. Waivers required. Spectators welcome. Participants can join for
one game or for all! Water will be provided to the players by the library. The Teen Advisory Council will be selling drinks and snacks as a
fundraiser. Registration is required as we need 30 participants to play. Please call the library to register.
There will be pre-event orientation meetings on June 19 at 10:00 am and June 20 at 6:30 pm (at the library), and June 22 at 1:00 pm (at the
park) to cover the basics of how to play, the rules of the game, safety, and provide a list of items participants need to bring.
Please plan on coming to one of these meetings!
Saturday, June 23: Dream Big-Read! presents: Capturing Creatures of the Night @ 10:00 am. Do you know
who visits your backyard at night? Find out from naturalist Jenny Amon when she brings her night vision game camera and
the pictures she’s taken to the library. Learn all about Iowa’s creatures of the night! All ages welcome.
Saturday, June 23: Dream Big-Read! movies presents: "How To Train Your Dragon" @ 2:00 pm. A hapless young Viking
who aspires to hunt dragons becomes the unlikely friend of a young dragon himself, and learns there may be more to the creatures
than he assumed. Rated PG. (98 min.)
Monday, June 25: Between the Covers presents: Steps To Publishing a Book @ 7:00 pm. Kristin Mitchell from Little
Creek Press in Mineral Point, Wisconsin will discuss the process of publishing a book. From the first draft to the printed copy, all
of the steps will be explained. Registration is requested.
Tuesday, June 26: Julie Habel’s Travels In Australia @ 2:00 pm. Join professional photographer Julie Habel as she
recounts her Australian travels with slides and tales.
Tuesday, June 26: Own the Night movies presents: "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" @ 7:00 pm. In this campy version that
spawned the television series, a flighty teenage girl learns that she is her generation's destined battler of vampires. Stars Kristy Swanson and

Thursday, June 28: Garbage to Black Gold @ 2:00 pm. Learn how you can easily turn food scraps and yard waste into a
great soil amendment for your lawn and gardens. Several compost ideas will be shared from backyard composting to worm
composting in your basement. Bev Wagner, DMASWA Education Coordinator, will present this one hour program.

interactive concerts have the kids laughing, singing, and dancing up a storm! A Rick Rayburn Kids Concert has a

Friday, June 29: Own the Night presents: Teen Hunger Games Live! @ 7:00 pm. We won’t kill you off, but come
ready to compete for prizes and bragging rights. Do you have what it takes to survive? Find out at our version of the Hunger
Games! Teens who have completed 6th - 12th grades are welcome.
Saturday, June 30: Dream Big-Read! presents: Mad Science @ 10:00 am: This program was a huge hit last year, so we
are bringing them back with an all new program. Come and learn wacky and interesting science facts and watch amazing
experiments up close. All ages welcome. Funded by the Friends of the James Kennedy Public Library.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: Friday, July 6 @ 1:00 pm . This session
will cover the basics of how we can all reduce, reuse, and recycle in order
to conserve our natural resources. Learn how to be a good steward of the
land. Bev Wagner, DMASWA Education Coordinator, will present this
one hour program.
Couponing: Monday, July 16 @ 7:00 pm. Don’t lose sleep over
high prices, become a couponer! Mary Kenyon, the Telegraph Herald’s
Coupon Queen, will present tips about couponing and just how easy it is
to save money. She will help with organizing your coupons so they are
handy.
Author Visit with Dale Kueter: Tuesday, July 17 @ 1:00 pm.
Dale will join us and talk about his latest book, The Smell of the Soil,
Writing Your Stories. He will discuss the importance of sharing family
stories as well as the publishing process for this book. Join him for some
of his fun family stories.
Upcoming Craft Classes For All Ages:
Origami Book Bird craft: Monday, July 2 @ 7:00 pm. Join
Diana and Sara and learn how to create an origami bird using pages from
old books. Be amazed as you watch these pages become a new creation!
All ages welcome but children 10 years old or under must be
accompanied by an adult. Registration is requested.
Kids Craft Day: Friday, July 13 @ 10:00 am. Join us for lots of
fun night-themed crafts. We will make shooting stars, lanterns, a scary
monster picture and more. Space is limited and registration is required.
Limited to children who have completed K-5th grades.

Old Book Shelf craft class: Monday, July 30 @ 7:00 pm.
Join Diana and Sara and learn how to make a floating shelf out of an old
book. Participants will begin the process of cutting and gluing the book
for the shelf brackets. This craft will be finished on August 6.
Participants may furnish their own hardback book or will be able to
choose one from a discard stack at the class. All ages welcome but
children 10 years old or under must be accompanied by an adult.

Friends of the Library Summer Used Book Sale
Thursday, July 19 - Monday, July 23
Musician Darrell House: Saturday, July 7 @ 10:00 am. Last year
Darrell was here and everyone had a great time. He is coming back to
entertain us with his humor and music. Don’t miss him! All ages welcome.
Night Birds: Saturday, July 14 @ 10:00 am. The MacBride Raptor
center will be bringing a live owl to visit our library! They will also bring a
daytime raptor to show us how these fascinating animals differ from each
other. What makes an owl ideally suited as a night hunter? Find out at this
great program. All ages welcome.
Bats with Vera: Saturday, July 21 @ 10:00 am. Vera Blevins, a bat
rescuer from Iowa, will bring live bats in order to educate us about these
fascinating night creatures. Do bats really fly into your hair? What should you
do if a bat gets in your house? Learn all the answers to these questions and
more at the library! All ages welcome.
Dream Big-Read!: Children's Summer Reading Program Pool
Party Finale: Sunday, July 29 from 6:00—8:00 pm. For all kids
(and their families) who COMPLETE the Summer Reading Program. Tickets
will be issued to eligible attendees.

Twilight Zone Marathon: Friday, July 20 from 6:00 pm to
midnight. Before Friday the 13th or Halloween, there was the Twilight Zone.
Not bloody or gory, but incredibly creepy. These made for television shows
mastered spine chilling endings and plot twists designed to creep you out.
Popcorn, snacks and drinks provided. Teens who have completed 6th - 12th
grades are welcome. Sponsored by the Teen Advisory Council of the Kennedy
Library.

$1.00 per bag!
