With the completion of the academic year
2003-2004, the SMCHS community has much
to look back on and be pleased with the results.
The Class of 2004 finished their tenure here
with great collective success. The
Baccalaureate and Commencement exercises
were carried out with class and with
cooperation, a tribute to a great group of
youngsters. Academically, this class has
performed very well in keeping with the
tradition of Santa Margarita graduates. The
included list of colleges to which our graduates
will be attending is an example of their
successes. We were blessed to have one
National Merit Scholarship finalist counted
among our graduates and an extremely high
success rate was garnered by those following
the International Baccalaureate curriculum.
What is most telling, of course, is that our
students of all ability levels are consistently
working hard, being successful in the academic
realm and realizing their potential.
As we have come to expect, Santa Margarita
athletes have had another banner year. We are
happy with our ten Serra League championships (girls golf, girls cross country, boys
basketball, boys and girls soccer, girls water
polo, baseball, boys golf, boys volleyball, and
girls track) and we are proud of three CIF
Championships (girls volleyball, girls cross
country, and boys basketball).

The band sported an undefeated season and
finished up by winning the 2A Division
Southern California Marching Band
Championships. Dance repeated as National
Champions.
For those who may not have had an
opportunity to visit campus over the course of
this year, a number of new additions and
enhancements have been made to our site. The
football field has been rebuilt with the latest
technology materials trademarked Fieldturf.
It’s the hottest item on the market! A new
wrestling building was erected and equipped.
ETV has a brand new huge, state of the art
truck and a beautiful track monument has been
constructed along side of the track. If you pass
along Antonio Parkway you won’t miss the
new electronic marquee.
During the course of this summer, a large
contingent of seniors will be participating in
the Kairos retreat program, and the Classes of
1994 and 1999 will be celebrating their ten
year and five year reunions, respectively.
Summer school and summer camps are
ongoing as usual. Campus is busy as always!
Among the faculty and staff, we have a number
of people moving to new opportunities and we
wish them a fond farewell and best wishes.
They are: Melissa Blower, Chris McMahon,
Phil Morales, Padraic Emparan, Angela
Iandoli, Donnelle Koselka, John Bennett, Mike
McManus, Linda Videll, Adrienne Jenkins,
Sheila Peyrebrune, Mike O’Neill, and Maria
Preja.
With best wishes for a pleasant summer, I
remain,
Sincerely in Christ,

Santa Margarita Catholic High School announces
Nicole Godinez and Michelle Hull as
Valedictorian and Salutatorian for the Class of 2004
The Valedictorian and Salutatorian are historically chosen as the Number
one and two ranked students in their class. It is an academic honor
bestowed upon the students who have made the greatest commitment to the
very high level academic curriculum at Santa Margarita Catholic High
School.
Nicole Godinez graduated number one in the Class of 2004. Nicole, an
International Baccalaureate Full Diploma Candidate, has consistently
Nicole Godinez & Michelle Hull challenged herself by taking the most rigorous curriculum at Santa
at Senior Awards night
Margarita Catholic High School. She has demonstrated the ability to
compete at the highest academic level. Her GPA and test scores speak to
her determination and success. Nicole not only excelled in the academic arena but participated in many
extra-curricular activities and service projects. A scholar athlete, Nicole played both SMCHS and Club
soccer. She was also a member of the SMCHS Track & Field team. Involved in student government,
choir, the math tutoring program, campus ministry and the Youth Group and Youth Leadership program
at San Francisco Solano Catholic Church, Nicole has been a true asset to the Santa Margarita Catholic
High School community. Her participation in the Corazon Project for the past six years exemplifies her
commitment to the community at large. According to Nicole, involvement in the Corazon Project
teaches you "how to truly live by your heart.” Her commitment to academic excellence and her desire to
help others makes Nicole an outstanding example of a Santa Margarita Catholic High School student.
Nicole will be attending Notre Dame in the fall.
Michelle Hull, an International Baccalaureate Full Diploma Candidate, graduated number two in the
Class of 2004. In her four years at Santa Margarita Catholic High School this outstanding scholar athlete
has established a clear pattern of challenging herself. Totally engaged every day, she is a conscientious
and independent individual who loves to learn. She is a member of NHS, CSF, and has earned school
awards of excellence in history, economics and biology. Athletically, Michelle has won recognition as
being a member of CIF teams and recognition for numerous individual records and accomplishments,
including SMCHS Female Athlete of the Year. She has been an integral member of the SMCHS Girls
Soccer and Track & Field teams as well as a starter for the nationally ranked West Coast Futbol Premier
Girls Soccer Team. Michele volunteers her time as a counselor for Hope Camp and at the Aegis Nursing
Home. This is a young woman who understands the importance of
being involved and giving back to her community. Michelle will
be attending Harvard in the fall.
Both students were honored at Santa Margarita Catholic High
School's Commencement Ceremonies, held on Saturday, June 5th,
2004 at the Bren Event Center in Irvine, California.

SMCHS Music Program Has Banner Year...
Our SMCHS Eagle Regiment Marching Band and Color Guard just finished
their most successful season in the History of Santa Margarita. The Eagle
Regiment Marching Band won 5 field show contests in a row, ended with an
undefeated season and won the 2A Division Southern California Marching
Band Championships. They defeated over 100 high schools for this honor.
Our SMCHS Flag and Dance Ensemble also won sweepstakes at each field show contest besting many color guards.
Their show, entitled “TIME,” included a life size hour glass complete with falling sand as part of the shows effect. The
SMCHS Drum Line was a great highlight for our Marching Band!
The SMCHS Wind Ensemble earned superior ratings at the Tesoro High School Music Festival in March. They were the
only high school at this festival to receive this honor. The entire SMCHS Band also traveled to Ensenada, Mexico on a
cruise. Our Jazz Band, Wind Ensemble and Steel Drum Band all had the opportunity to perform for the guests on the
cruise.
The SMCHS Flag and Dance Ensemble also just finished their 2004 indoor season, undefeated. This group won seven
contests which included them winning the WGASC Intermediate “A” division championships and the gold medal. They
bested over 44 guards for this incredible honor.
Our SMCHS Steel Drum Band has also just finished their performance tour for 2004. They performed at the Baja Fresh
in RSM, the Spectrum in Irvine (with over 1000 spectators watching their performance) and performed for the Applied
Medical Corporation in RSM.
Congratulations to Mr. Weinberg, his staff and all of the members of our outstanding SMCHS Band and Color Guard
Program!
EAGLE DEBATE TEAM
The Eagle Competitive Debate Team closes Season 2003-2004 in style. Teams finished in the final top ten
percent of the Orange County League again this year. The policy team of Javanne Golob and Brandon Golob
took finalist honors at the State Quals and Danielle LaChance finished in the top Extemporaneous
Presentation speakers. Special recognition goes to our graduating seniors - Greg Sayer, Javanne Golob, Katie
McCarthy and Christina Maher who received the National Forensic League Honor Cords which they wore
proudly at graduation. Coach Jean Hauser will have 22 returning
Varsity members and 30 Novice students for Season 2004-2005. The
team is planning trips to UC Berkeley and Stanford next year. Get
ready - next year’s resolution is: That the United States federal
government should establish a foreign policy substantially increasing
its support of the United Nations peacekeeping operations. Varsity
team members have begun the research!

2002
SMCHS DANCE PROGRAM
The SMCHS Dance Program began the academic year with 130 students. Forty-four of the students were advanced level
dancers, and they quickly began preparing for the annual Christmas Guild Performance in conjunction with the rest of the Performing
Arts Department. The performance was once again a beautiful collaborative venture between the various disciplines within the
Performing Arts Department. Everyone who saw these amazing students perform together was impressed with the level of dedication
and commitment, not to mention talent, on display that special evening in early December. A shorter version was performed for the
entire student body the following day.
Ms. Lucia Wooley, Dance Program Director, traveled to Cardiff Wales in November to participate in her fifth IB Dance Subject
Committee meeting where changes and amplifications were made to the still-evolving dance curriculum. SMCHS had the largest
group world-wide preparing for the Spring Examinations. Of the 38 International Baccalaureate Dance students at Santa Margarita, 22
were Seniors. Four of these young ladies chose dance to complete their Full Diploma requirements. These Seniors, Gabby de Rubira,
Chloe Musselman, Leah Dlugolecki, and Wellsley Lovatt were the first Higher Level dance students to go though the course work at
SMCHS. Congratulations to all dancers who successfully undertook the challenge of participating in the pilot dance program.
The annual Spring Dance Concert was again a critical and financial success. With the help of all dance classes and their families,
donations of money, raffle and food items ensured that the concert was a classy, fun event, and as always, sold-out. The Saturday
Evening Benefit Concert was a highly anticipated, memorable event, thanks to the efforts of Concert Chairs Beverly McNamara and
Margaret Kalimada. Ticket holders were treated to a fabulous champagne reception, followed by an evening of incredible dancing.
Many thanks go out to all who made this evening a tremendous success.
This summer many SM dancers will continue their training at various summer intensives around the county. Watch for more
outstanding accomplishments from the SM dancers in the upcoming year!
THE EAGLE DANCE TEAM
The Eagle Dance Team is already gearing up for a new season after having an
award-winning 2003-2004! After welcoming three new members this past year to
the team, the dancers headed off to Cal State Long Beach for USA Elite Dance
Camp. They came home with a superior award as well as an invitation to perform
at the Pro Bowl in Hawaii. As the school year approached, the dancers spent many
hours at summer practice perfecting their technique, working with master teachers,
and preparing choreography for the upcoming football season. The 2003-2004 SM
Dance Team made their debut at the first home football game performing a hip-hop
routine that had everyone dancing in their seats. A month later, the dancers wowed
audiences at the Homecoming football game with their tribute to the glamour of Hollywood, dancing to “Sparkling Diamonds.” In
addition, the Dance Team performed in the annual Christmas Guild celebrating the spirit of the season through music and movement.
As competition season approached, the dancers showcased a few of their competition routines at boys and girls basketball games.
This helped to prepare them for three months of tough competition. The Dance Team competed with seven competition routines and
six solos. The girls worked with several professional choreographers in the area including Mike Esperanza, JP San Pedro, and Sara
Sanders. It has always been the goal of the Dance Program to provide our dancers with a diverse group of choreographers and a
wide range of dance styles. The SM Dance team competed with seven different and innovative routines this year including lyrical
jazz, Fosse style jazz, hip-hop and modern. The dancers brought home countless first place trophies in team divisions as well as
solo divisions. The highlight of the year however was the Contest of Champions in Orlando where the Eagle Dance Team was
named National Champions in two divisions! In addition, Junior soloists Serena Chan and Trisha McNamara placed in the top 10 in
the Senior solo division out of 150 other dancers. Sophomores Michelle Campion and Danielle Schulz also placed in the top 10 in
the Junior solo division. Because of their incredible performance in Orlando, the girls were also awarded the Best in Category award
- meaning they were the highest scoring team in their entire category! After 6 competitions, the Dance Team brought home over 50
trophies and plaques including two national titles. As competition season ended, the Dance Team closed out the year participating in
the annual Spring Dance Concert. Performing along with the other SM dance classes for a sold out audience three nights in a row,
the team performed their competition dances for the last time. The Dance Team graduated six talented seniors this year who have all
been four year, dedicated members, all planning to continue dancing while in college. With only 18 members, the Eagle Dancers
still set the standard high that will be tough to beat in the years to come!

SMCHS Library News...
The faculty and students of Santa Margarita Catholic High School want to thank the Mothers Club for their
gift of $10,000 to the Library for the purchase of books. This was the profit of their Spring Fashion Show.
Since 1990 they have donated $176,000 which includes this year’s money. The Library now owns over
21,000 books with a goal of 30,000 books. Each book purchased has a bookplate
in the front that reads “From our generation to yours and beyond we share the
love of reading and information. Mothers Club 2004.” This past year we
checked out 11,500 books, so we know the whole school profits from your hard
work. Thank you again for helping to make the Library such a wonderful place
to finish the work started in the classroom.
Sincerely,
Joan Zelarney ~ SMCHS Librarian

Eagles in
Pat Cento, SMCHS Class of 2004
earned the rank of Eagle Scout.
After relocating 3 times, Pat was
persistent and completed his task.
Pat’s Eagle project was to design and
build a reading center with a western
theme, for the library of Wagon
Wheel Elementary School. It had to
be on an easily movable platform, so they could roll it away when space was
needed. The job was completed in late summer and delivered to the school at
the beginning of the school year, to everyone’s delight. All in all, the job
consisted of a total of 141 hours of hard work. Pat is thankful for his Troop
#636, and all of the adult leadership he received after just moving here from
Naperville, IL. He couldn’t have done it without everyone’s help.

until August 6th. Practices are held in the evening for the 1st two weeks (4:30p.m. - 6:30p.m.) and will switch to mornings

SMCHS POLO PLAYERS MAKE NATIONAL SQUAD
Junior Mary Cousineau and Sophomore Darby Anderson were selected to the Women’s Youth
National Waterpolo Team. The selection process began in March and concluded after a
grueling three day selection process in La Jolla, California, where 165 of the nation’s cream of
the crop battled in the pool, with only 13 athletes making the cut. Mary and Darby will travel
to New Zealand and Australia on a training trip for 3 weeks at the end of June.
Congratulations girls!!

SMCHS SAT I Prep Courses
Fall 2004 Class
September/October 2004
The NEW SAT I Test!
There is a new SAT I test on the horizon. Its first
examination date is March of 2005. This new test affects the
class of 2006 and beyond. The class of 2006 has the option
of taking the "old" SAT I test at the beginning of their junior
year AND taking the new SAT I in the spring of their junior
year. The class of 2007 and beyond will only be taking the
new version of the test.
The Afternoon Class
The course meets right after school and will last eight
days: September 27th through the 30th (Mon. through
Thurs.) and October 5th through the 8th (Tues. - Fri).
The Evening Class
This course also lasts eight days: September 27th through
the 30th (Mon. through Thurs.) and October 4th through the
7th (Mon. through Thurs.).
Can a student take the "old" test and also take the new test?
Some colleges/universities (the UC schools for example) have
already indicated that they will only accept the new test
scores. Other colleges/universities have yet to state their
requirements and, as of this time, may accept both the "old"
version as well as the new version.
What is different about this new version? The math portion
will no longer have a quantitative comparisons section but
will add some Algebra 2 topics. The verbal portion will no
longer have analogies. A completely new essay writing
section has been added along with a multiple choice grammar
section. For more information on the changes visit:
http://www.collegeboard.com/newsat/index.html
Materials
Each student will receive 10 Real SATs, a Verbal manual and
a Math manual.
The SMCHS SAT I Prep Course
The fall 2004 courses will include strategies for both the old
test and the new test. The spring of 2005 course, and all
courses after that date, will only contain strategies concerning
the new test. The SMCHS SAT I Prep Course is a 17 1/2
hour, intense program covering all of the testing techniques
and skills offered in the longer and more expensive courses.
Our eight day course is offered three times a year - once in
the fall, once in the spring and once in the summer. Within
our classes the students will learn and practice test taking
techniques and shortcuts, guessing strategies, complete
vocabulary building exercises and valuable essay writing tips
specifically for the NEW SAT test.
The Instructor
The afternoon instructors are Cheryl Wolgamott (Verbal) and
Gary Fox (Math). The evening instructors are Tiffany
Kuykendall (Verbal) and Sean Basford (Math).

Dear Santa Margarita Family:
Another school year has flown by and for those graduating seniors and their
parents, we wish you continued success in your future endeavors. You will always
be a part of the SMCHS family and never far from our hearts.
For parents who are new to Santa Margarita, whether you have incoming freshmen
or transferring students, please join us on September 18, 2004 for the Welcome
Parent BBQ. This is a fabulous opportunity to kick off the new school year, meet
other SMCHS parents and learn more about what makes Santa Margarita the
school that it is. During this social event we laugh a little, cry a little and
generally share with you the road map to surviving the next four years. This
year’s theme is “Tropical” so break out the Hawaiian shirts and grass skirts.

SMCHS Coverlets
make great gifts!
The SMCHS coverlet, created by Mill
Street Designs, captures the beauty of
our campus and depicts Our Lady of
Joy, the statue of the Blessed Virgin
Mary that resides in the Strader Grotto,
and many of our school’s most
significant buildings. A coverlet is on
display in the front office. At $45.00
each (additional $7.00 to have the
coverlet shipped anywhere in the
Continental United States), the 100%
cotton, two-layer jacquard coverlet is
preshrunk, colorfast and machine
washable. Not only is it handsome and
practical, but it makes the perfect gift
for family members near and far.
Proceeds benefit the Academic Boosters
and the Teacher Classroom
Enhancement Grant Program.
To purchase your coverlet, stop by the
Reception Desk or mail your check
payable to SMCHS in the amount of
$45.00 ($52.00 if being shipped to an
alternate address). Include your name,
address, phone number and indicate
alternate mailing address, if applicable.
Please call the front desk at

Empties 4 Cash
Santa Margarita Catholic High School has launched a
recycling and fundraising program with the help of a recycling company called
“Empties 4 Cash.” Here is what the Empties 4 Cash program is about: The empty
inkjet cartridges that we usually throw away as trash can be recycled and
remanufactured. Bring the empty cartridges, secured in a sealed plastic bag, to
school and put them in one of the collection boxes located in the Bookstore and
Front Office. Our school will receive $2.00 for each empty inkjet cartridge that
has a print head, regardless of the brand or type. We need cartridges from all of the
following brands of printers that have print heads: HP, Lexmark, Xerox, Compaq,
Samsung, Kodak, Canon, Apple. (No Epson print cartridges can be accepted,
since the Epson cartridges are just ink tanks without a print head.)
*Remember: Please place the cartridge in a sealed plastic bag to avoid ink spills.
Thank you in advance for helping us recycle old ink cartridges and participating in
this wonderful fundraising program. If you have any questions, please call or
e-mail Catherine Hassen at (949) 766-6004 or [email protected].

Eagle Alumni Association Scholarships Awarded
Thomas Sabin & Ashley Kalimada
The Eagle Alumni Association was proud to present two $1,000 scholarships on Monday,
May 17, 2004 for the fourth consecuive year during the annual Senior Awards Night.
These scholarship winners were selected from an impressive field of applicants based on
academics, extra-curricular activities and service. The final pool of five finalists went
through a personal interview with members of the Alumni Council Scholarship Committee
and then three runners up and the two winners were selected. The runners up were
presented with a lifetime membership in the Eagle Alumni Association and a Cross Pen
with our eagle logo. Congratulations to our runners up: Joanna Collins who will be
attending Notre Dame, Michelle Hull attending Harvard and Alek Ramoska attending
University of Colorado - Boulder.
Our two winners presented an incredible list of achievements but also possessed the extra quality of “Eagle Spirit” and
a special pride and attitude about being an active alumni who would give back to Santa Margarita in the future. We
were very impressed with all the applicants and know they will be successful. The two winners from the Class of 2004
were Ashley Kalimada and Thomas Sabin. Ashley will be attending George Washington University and Thomas will
be attending New York University this fall. In addition to the $1,000 each, the winners were also given lifetime
memberships in the Eagle Alumni Association, the eagle cross pens and beautiful individual eagle plaques. They also
both have their names added to the perpetual scholarship plaque in the Alumni Office at Santa Margarita.
Congratulations to Ashley and Thomas!

Boys' Volleyball Alumni Game
On Friday, May 7, 2004 the past met the present at the Santa
Margarita Eagles Alumni versus Varsity Boys' Volleyball Game.
After incredible coordination and determination, almost all past
volleyball players and their families were contacted and invited to
attend the game. The effort paid off as over 20 alumni were
present and ready to play. A great time was had by all. It was a close and competitive evening, but the past
prevailed as the alumni were victorious! After the game, everyone headed over to Ballpark Pizza to enjoy
dinner, lots of laughs and Santa Margarita camaraderie. It is rumored that the SMCHS Volleyball Team saw a
few of the alumni hobbling out to their cars after the festivities!
It was a great event - GO EAGLES!

Track “Monument” Dedication
On the morning of March 6, 2004, which was opening day for the 2004 SMCHS
track & field season, the Ribbon Cutting & Dedication of the new
Record/Scoreboard & Hall of Fame took place. The idea was discussed in 2001,
the project broke ground in summer of 2003, culminating with the dedication in
March. This “board” is actually a permanent, concrete structure with seating for
approximately 40 people and has been dubbed the “Monument.” It is used to
display the scores during the track meets, and is a great spectator spot as those
seated on it are looking down the home straightaway. The record board portion
is two-fold and includes all the current SMCHS School Records and all Track
Records; that is, the best performances set by anyone at our facility. The back
side of the wall is the SM Track & Field and Cross Country Hall of Fame which honors the best who have
represented these sports at SMCHS. The Monument is lit at night and is quite impressive!
This Monument project became a reality through the first ever campaign where alumni and their families were
contacted to donate to the project. The Monument is dedicated to all SM track and field and cross country athletes,
past, present and future. Thank you to all those who made the vision become a reality.

If you will be on vacation, etc. during your allotted day, you may have a friend or such
pick up your schedule in the bookstore and purchase books for you. If you choose to
purchase books BEFORE your scheduled time, you must purchase all new books.
Thank you in advance for your adherence to the above schedule.
